MaxInDHouse: I'm a Christian so just like my Master Lord and King the only thing that could make me relate with outsiders is matters relating to faith in God anything else i will do with my fellow believers only!🙂 Yet you're using an atheist's privately owned platform to "relate with outsiders". If everyone behaved like you will there be the vibrant, interesting platform you now have and love to always be on? |

tctrills: Now you are comparing just 2 states vyou will never get a comprehensive result doing this. I gave you a whole list of states and countries. Comparing 2 states t8mell almost nothing.
Meanwhile, here are the top 10 suicidal states and the 10 states with the least rate. You will notice that temperature has nothing to do with this
Rank,State,"Suicide Rate (per 100,000)" 1,Alaska,28.15 2,Montana,26.65 3,Wyoming,26.31 4,Idaho,23.28 5,New Mexico,22.76 6,Oklahoma,21.79 7,Utah,21.51 8,Colorado,20.89 9,South Dakota,20.66 10,Arkansas,20.23

Compare different sections of the country amongst themselves. Example, Northeast - notice the warmest have the lowest rates? So also West, South, North Central, etc. Then throw in immigration and other factors. Bottom line, common sense ought to tell you that people feel more down in damp (or rainy), cold, less-sun weather. There's even a name for it. See below

Using this Earth-scattering discovery, we can be sure that the rate of suicide in states like Arizona, Texas, and Florida would be much lower than in Alaska, New York, Greenland, Iceland, and Norway, right? See below. Mind you, California has Skid Row and much more destitute and homeless/hopeless people!

Uchesis: You just nailed it bro.
It is the religious belief that when one commits suicide, such a person is going straight to hellfire.
Also the "E go better" narrative sold to us from the day we were born.
Fela said it all when he sang the song "suffering and smiling"
Maybe. But if fear of hell doesn't stop Nigerians from scamming, corruption, and money rituals, you think it'll keep them from committing suicide if they come to that point |

If you're susceptible to depression you're more likely to kill yourself if you're in a cold, damp place. There's also the issue of it being easier to get trapped in debt |

What triggers suicide over there is like a normal day to day struggles in Nigeria
Imagine people committing suicide for heart breaks or loss of bets I don't think so. If you're prone to depression it'd be exacerbated by a sunless, cold, damp place. Then there is also the issue of easily getting trapped in debt, and also not being able to bribe your way out of embarrassing stuff |

tctrills: Suicide is more of a cultural and maybe religions issue than it is a reflection of the socioeconomic state of a country.
That's why you don't see Gaza, Yemen, Iran and Afghanistan top the list. You are not likely to end your life if you Japa. No fear One might not end one's life (though one also might - depression is no respecter of persons), but one might be wondering why so many of them choose that route - the ultimate vote of no confidence in a place! |

Same way some id***tts will be comparing prices of commodities in US to Nigeria Oga, rate has nothing to do with total population. Go school, una go say school na scam. 10 per 1000 is higher than 3 per 1000, no matter what the total populations! |

nairalanda1: Religious belief in the UK is on the decline. Many don't go to church regularly. Less than 50 % are christian and more identify as no religion. Only one million people go to church ie sunday-sunday, regularly
It's so bad that there are empty church buildings . All over the place. Islam accounts for 6.5% of the population
It is even rumored that the heir to the throne doesn't even believe in God. Allegedly. Yeah, but if Nigerians' religion doesn't stop them from being scammers and corrupt, what makes you think it'd stop them from suicide? |

LordReed: It's good to note that they state official rate because especially in places like ours where mental health issues and suicides have taboo connotations, they are inevitably under reported.
That said I would not make a japa decision based on it, the other factors driving a japa decision would weigh far more than the suicide rate. But it also has taboo connotations over there. Besides, the difference is too much to be accounted for by just that. I think it has a lot to do with their cold, damp, sunless environment, and exposure to high debt via credit cards and other credit facilities that easily trap the average person. |

Fido24: Also find the cause of suicide in the respective countries. you will discovered that in Nigeria, the major cause is frustration due to lack of Job or money which may not be the case in UK/USA I think debt also has a lot to do with it, besides their cold, damp environment. If credit cards were introduced in Nigeria suicide would double |
