Christianity Etc › Bishop Sacks Pastors, Closes Church For Non-remittance Of ‘seed Offering’ by r231(op): 8:49pm On Jan 26, 2010
The Anglican Bishop of Lagos West Diocese, the Rt. Rev. (Dr.) Peter Adebiyi, at the weekend closed down St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Mushin, Lagos, for its failure to remit ‘covenant seed’ to him.

The Bishop also sacked the Vicar of the church, the Rev. Canon Edison Chigozie Mgbeokwere, with his assistants following a fracas in the church.

Members of the church, however, defied the new directive by the Bishop.

When P.M.News visited the church yesterday, the members had forced the locked gate of the church open and conducted service without a pastor (vicar) or head.

The cause of the fight, which has been reported to the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Marvel Akpoyibo, could be traced to a meeting between the bishop and the vicar with his congregation.

At the meeting, P.M.NEWS learnt that Bishop Adebiyi said the church has not contributed the amount of money the parish remitted to the diocese, stressing that loyalty was more important to him than hard work.

The action of the Lordship has prompted the church to protest by writing a petition to the prelate of Anglican Church in Nigeria, Bishop Peter J. Akinola, that they no longer want to be under Lagos West Diocese of the church.

Members of the church, who spoke to P.M.NEWS, alleged that the bishop was fighting with the church’s heads because of money.

They said the church has been paying assessment levy to the bishop but that was not enough for him, as he insisted he wanted more.

Though the Public Relations Officer to the Bishop, Tunji Oguntuase, confirmed to P.M.NEWS that the bishop ordered the closure of the church, he denied the allegation that it was closed because of money.

He blamed the rift on insubordination by the church’s heads.

The Bishop’s PRO attributed the problem to the heads of the church, whom he said do not want to be monitored on how they manage the church’s purse.

He maintained that the bishop has the power to instil sanity in any of the parishes under him

Celebrities › Diff'rent Strokes Star Gary Coleman Arrested For Domestic Assault by r231(op): 8:27pm On Jan 26, 2010
Frail Gary Coleman leaves jail as it emerges he was NOT arrested for domestic violence but an outstanding warrant

By Daily Mail Reporter
Last updated at 4:28 PM on 26th January 2010

Former child star Gary Coleman was not jailed for domestic violence, it has emerged.

Contrary to initial reports, the 41-year-old actor was arrested for failure to appear in court, according to statements released by his attorney and Utah police.

Yesterday it was widely reported that Coleman, who shot to fame on U.S. sitcom Diff'rent Strokes, had been arrested for a disturbance at his home.

But he was actually taken into custody as a result of an outstanding warrant for a prior incident.

The actor's lawyer Randy Kester told People magazine: 'This is a lot less serious than it seems. He was not arrested for assault.'

However, Kester was unable to clarify what outstanding case Coleman's failure to appear had stemmed from.

Radar Online reports that the warrant was related to a previous domestic incident.

A Santaquin City, Utah, police statement confirmed Kester's statement that no criminal charges have been filed against the actor.

But it revealed police officers did respond to the 4ft 8in star's home on Sunday for an unnamed "civil disturbance."

'During the course of the [civil disturbance] investigation, a misdemeanor warrant for failure to appear was located for Gary Coleman,' the statement said.

'Mr. Coleman was taken into custody and booked at the Utah County Jail without incident. The arrest warrant is unrelated to the original [call].'

The actor has since posted his $1,725 bail and been released from Utah County Jail.

He was interviewed by Radar Online on his release and blamed a stay in hospital for missing the court date that landed him in jail.

As he left in a wheelchair, Coleman said: 'I was in hospital getting some minor surgery during the time I was supposed to go in to see the judge with all this paperwork.'

Asked if it was true that the surgery was on his heart, he tried to play down his health issues, saying: 'I don't want to spread that around, I won't be able to get any more work.'

According to his father-in-law, Coleman also undergoes dialysis three times a week for the kidney condition he has had since he was born.

He joked with reporters when asked if he was having marital problems, saying: 'My wife would kill me if I said anything like that!'

Adding: 'I don't like jail, I don't ever want to see it again, I don't care if it was County Jail, I don't ever want to see it again.

Coleman is married to Shannon Price, who is almost half his age - and almost twice his height.

The pair wed in a private mountaintop ceremony in Nevada in August 2007 and Coleman revealed it was not only his first marriage, but also the first time he had been intimate with a woman.

Coleman, who rose to fame as Arnold Jackson in the US sitcom, met Price, 24, while he was filming 2006 movie Church Ball in Utah.

He admitted in 2008 that their relationship was at times volatile.

He said: 'We may go a week and not speak to each other.'

In July last year, Price was arrested after a domestic violence incident involving the actor.

Coleman has had numerous problems since Diff'rent Strokes came to an end in 1986.

Plagued with financial issues, in 1993 he admitted he had twice attempted suicide with sleeping pills.

He received a suspended sentence for assault in 1998 after he punched a female fan during a heated row over an autograph.

The woman, Tracy Fields, mocked Coleman's lacklustre career as an adult actor, he said that he thought Fields was going to hit him, so he punched her

Despite finding work with various bit parts and cameo roles, Coleman filed for bankruptcy in 1999, attributing his financial woes to mismanagement of his trust fund.

Just last month, he auctioned off an autographed pair of his trousers on eBay for £248,000 to help pay medical bills.

Politics › Can A Woman Take Us There? by r231(op): 6:54am On Jan 26, 2010
Starting from 1960, male presidents {13} of them, have ruled this nation and what do we have to show for it. the answer is nothing.
we should stop deceiving ourselves. I Believe the answer to our plight is that a woman, who has proven beyond every shadow of doubt to be capable, comes to power. lets give Dora Akunyuli a chance, Okonji Iwela, Oby Ekwensili and their likes the opportunity to take you and i to the land flowing with milk and honey. what do you think?
