I actually know someone like that. First computer engineer, later lawyer, now part time music enthusiast come retired man. But he's not most people sha.

I know actors with successful long careers, who go on to study law and practice, or go into politics. A career doesn't necessarily mean it has to be a "profession", ie, a doctor suddenly deciding he wants to switch to being a lawyer or an engineer. It might just be a lawyer wanting to now be a fashion designer, or a musician, or a media person. Why do people have to keep looking at life from beneath their noses??

@OP they say a rolling stone gathers no moss, but I don't think that applies anymore in this modern era. I do believe that even at 40 you can switch to something you find more fulfilling, if only you can be bold and take the step. You still have a lot of years ahead, don't spend it wondering what might have been. Good luck!

Don't know why any guy should be nervous about meeting a girl's folks. If you visit her at home regularly, it should become part of u. My parents are v. civilized and always ask that we bring our male friends home so they can "know" them. Meeting the parents is different from being formally INTRODUCED as the future son-in-law. So until the girl tells u so, don't sweat it and get comfy with the family.
