Thank you Mama @vcole. I would do as advised.

vcole:
@rainazoe @behati is right. For 2018, you were a “factual resident” and you must file taxes of your world income. Did you have a bank account, credit card, provincial health insurance, etc here in 2018? Any of these could be classified as secondary ties for tax residency purposes.
Taxes are filed by February of each year up until April 30th. If you can show proof of having paid taxes in Nigeria for 2018, then you would be able to avoid double taxation.
With regards to child benefit, you must file taxes to maintain eligibility for it. Since you haven’t been here, I suppose that you haven’t been receiving child benefits anyway. If you are having your first child now, there is an automatic child benefit application form that you fill in the hospital. I would advice that when you are leaving Canada, give CRA a call before you do to tell them you are leaving.
More info about tax residency status can be found here https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/international-non-residents/information-been-moved/determining-your-residency-status.html and you can always contact CRA. If you ask me I would say file taxes anyway irrespective of deemed resident, deemed non resident or factual resident.
TravelRe: Living In Canada/Life As A Canadian Immigrant by rainazoe: 8:45pm On Dec 23, 2018
Thanks Behati. So do you advise I file now? The child benefits isn't my wahala now. I just want to be compliant

behati:
You become tax resident from when you first established residency in Canada. So technicaly, you became eligible to file income taxes from June when you landed. In 2019, you'll have to declare your worldwide income (both earned in Canada and Nigeria) from June (when you became a PR), however, due to the double taxation agreement between Nigeria and Canada, you would not have to pay taxes on income already subject to tax in Nigeria, but you must still file returns.
This response does not cover child benefits though, i don't know how that works.

Redo medicals? Have you been waiting for a year? Send AVO a mail na

Zutlin:
Yes I'm on the Whatsapp group. You were in the group so you must know me - you just can't marry my monicker to my Whatsapp name. grin

I'm still waiting for AVO. I pray I get PPR early January, else I may have to redo medicals.
TravelRe: Living In Canada/Life As A Canadian Immigrant by rainazoe: 3:24pm On Dec 23, 2018
Haha @skywalk12. 1st landing was early June for 10 days and I just came in again so cumm 10 days

SkyWalk12:
Lol stop running away. I doubt you can file those benefits without proof of living in Canada like tenancy agreements and bank statements. When was your first landing (to determine if you need to file taxes) and how long have you cumulatively stayed?

Thanks Vcole. I'd be using a midwife and not coming to CA till January.

vcole:
halos! What would you like to know? There’s not much of a process per se. your gp is your primary care giver and would provide prenatal care up until about the 28th or 32nd week (not sure again) when s/he would refer you to a obgyn. In some cases the gp provides care for the entire pregnancy. Delivery is taken at the hospital assigned to your zone based on your home address. Documentation for baby is done prior to discharge. You get the sin in the mail after a couple of weeks, you apply for the birth certificate at the nearest registry after about 4 weeks and keep up with weekly and fortnightly baby and mom appointments with the gp and book immunization appointments. (Insert thinking emoji- did I leave anything out?)

It's been a little over a year I landed. God bless those who are keeping the thread running with their advice. So, I had a lot of stuff to tidy in naija, my immigrant visa was just stored in one envelope for months!!! My flight was just few weeks to the expiration of the visa and the irony of everything was I didn't accomplish my mission back home.

Flight was OK! for the 16hours long flight, I was the only one seated in my row; so I had a my own special first class and slept well on all seats.

I came with the mind of being on my own since I didn't have family or friends here. In reality, I had siblings who are citizens here but I was not relating with them due to.... . When things hooked me ehn, I had to swallow pride and run to my brother's house. My major fear was spending money when I'm not earning any..

Hahaha @eclectic139. The tribe is growing. I would look into the cab option. Others have mentioned Greyhound bus and uber.

eclectic139:
hey... finally someone coming to Kitchener. lol!. Sorry I don't know a reliable response to your question. Maybe you can call the cab company you want to book from and explain the wahalla with timing, or you give them 1 hour later, say.. you will land at 7am, tell them to come at 8am or 8:30.. to give you time to sort out all landing wahalla.. incase you get searched or your flight is delayed.
TravelRe: Living In Canada/Life As A Canadian Immigrant by rainazoe: 7:34am On Dec 04, 2018
Thanks Ceemac. You really helped.

ceemac:
Your best bet will be Greyhound bus on arrival, you can check their schedule online and know what works best for you. You may also consider Uber as an option as it will be readily available on arrival and finally, you may also never go wrong with flat rate airport taxis from the to your destination.

I do hope that helps

rainazoe:
Please what is the fastest way get to Kitchener from Toronto's Pearson Airport. With the cold, I am not even considering the rail service and I am not sure a pre booked cab will want to be kept waiting when I cannot determine the exact time I would exit the airport.

Awww theCongo2. See sacrifice.

TheCongo2:
Welcome to Canada my brother
Here are 2 options for you.
You can take a greyhound bus to St. Catherines. It will take you 2 hours to get there by bus.
Or, I can take you to St. Catherines (free of charge). But I live in London. It will take me 2.5 hours to get to get to you in Etobicoke. Can you reschedule your St. Catherine's appointment?

Mine was couriered via DHL. It was even marked legal document. Yes someone can also bring it down too.

ayodele2107:
Hi,
You cannot send via courier (it wont get out of Canada as scanners will pick it and seize). You can get someone who is coming home to physically bring for you (someone from church brought mine).Nigerians are always willing to help with that and someone always comes home somehow within the month. If it doesn't come on time then PRTD will take u back home.
TravelRe: Living In Canada/Life As A Canadian Immigrant by rainazoe: 12:47pm On Dec 02, 2018
My PR card took a long time to be processed and when it was ready I requested the person whose address I used to send via Courier and I received it without stress.

Since you are still in CA call CIC and ask for the status of the card ie if processing has commenced. If processing has commenced, it would take about 2 weeks to get to you going by my experience. Most times the delay may come from your passport photo being ineligible but they would not notify you.

You don't need the PRTD except you are returning to CA and do not have your card.

Boogy:
Good evening everyone,I need to travel to Nigeria and I haven't gotten my pr card. Is it possible I have my card sent via courier by someone or I should apply for prtd when I get to Nigeria. I need ideas from people that have gone through the same experience. Thanks

Maybe they recently allowed that option. Prior to now, it was either their office or GTB payment.

I made my payment on their website and it went through, just 2 days ago! And I used my Zenith Bank card.

Landing gist!

Family of 3 left Nigeria for Toronto on Monday via Ethiopian airlines. We took a total of 6 boxes, 2 hand luggages. Hubs did all the heavy lifting at the airport.

The flight was uneventful (which is what we all hope for anyways smiley ). We arrived Toronto by 7am. However there was a little queue at immigration. The immigration officers were not ready for work that Tuesday morning. They were just gisting and chilling. Seriously, we spent 2.5hrs on that queue (one lady even missed her connecting flight to Ottawa). One guy kept complaining and eventually asked one officer the cause of the delay. The officer replied "good question", and walked away grin.

There was a lady just before me who spent 1hr with 2 officers. Seriously i became scared cause i kept wondering what was going on. Hubs kept reminding me that everyone's case is different. Eventually it got to our turn and it lasted for like 15mins. He didn't ask any serious question, just wanted to know the total value of cash we were carrying. The officer even expressed surprise when he heard we had been waiting for 2.5hrs. I just dey look am with one eye angry

Eventually he said the magic words "you are now a permanent resident of Canada, welcome to Canada" grin.

We moved onto canada service for our SIN, and after collecting our baggage, hubs opened an account with CIBC at the airport. They gave both of us SIM cards with public mobile and $60 voucher each.

We are currently at the BnB and its really nice. My daughter cried the first day from the cold, but she is adjusting well. We were able to get more warm clothing from shop.

So far so good. Trying to find an apartment. All in all, enjoying Toronto.
