Thank you Mama

vcole:
since ur gonna go back after the baby, then don't apply for a health card when you come. Tell the docs you're a self-pay patient and let them bill you as such. That way, you pay your bills when they arrive without it going to your provincial health care.
TravelRe: Living In Canada/Life As A Canadian Immigrant by rainazoe: 6:07pm On Aug 15, 2018
Mama Ethelia. How is the baby?

Ethelia:
I think you can do it after landing....

Got back to Naija. I did a short landing.

nenemo:
When you say got back, what do you mean?
TravelRe: Living In Canada/Life As A Canadian Immigrant by rainazoe: 1:08pm On Aug 15, 2018
I think it's best you finish the whole process. I was in a quandary similar to this and got the same advice. I haven't changed my passport yet to my married name since I got back.

nenemo:
Hello,

I need some advise please.

I am married with children. However, I haven't managed to change my name yet but my children all bear my husband's name.

I applied for permanent residency with my maiden name and I am now currently awaiting the almighty ppr mail.

Lately, I have been wondering when the best time to officially change my name would be. Should I do it after I get the ppr mail and before I submit passports? Should I do it after I receive COPR and before I leave Nigeria? Or should I do it long after I have settled in Canada?

Informed advice will be greatly appreciated smiley

Koolmum. Did you already have a health card with the province. I have PR but didn't apply for a health card.

Koolmum:
Hi MizGene ,

Getting d details as per d cost might be abit difficult for me as It was free for me becos I have a PR card .

I am presently in Brampton so don't reli know much about t.

Reli sorry am unable to help.

Has any permanent resident mama residing in Naija had a baby in CA recently. I need some guidance on how to go about it. I didn't apply for a health card before I left CA.
TravelRe: Living In Canada/Life As A Canadian Immigrant by rainazoe: 6:24am On Aug 13, 2018
Thanks Mom. I didn't apply before I left because I was not literally going to stay for 90days. Thanks

vcole:
Hey rainazoe. I have no idea how paying out of pocket works. If you already applied for a health card, you would be unable to pay cash because your services would be automatically billed to your provincial health insurance.
TravelRe: Living In Canada/Life As A Canadian Immigrant by rainazoe: 7:03pm On Aug 12, 2018
@vcole Hey Mama. I intend to have my baby in early 2019 but can't prove 3 months residency because I returned to Naija after landing and would likely return to Naija shortly after having my baby too so would likely pay cash

I know you answered a similar question but I can't locate the response but how do I go about it. Do you also advise that I use midwives? Thanks
TravelRe: Living In Canada/Life As A Canadian Immigrant by rainazoe: 12:59pm On May 27, 2018
I was asked if I had my PoF and I told the Officer that I had the document I used to apply as PR and he said ok. That was it.

cutezain:
Good morning everyone,

I am back with more questions.
I understand that the point of entry I must show my passport, COPR,proof of funds, list of house hold items I brought along and would be expecting.
Now my question, this proof of funds, is it still my bank statements?
I know I would definitely carry some cash, must it be Canadian dollars or American dollars wot do you think.
How do I show proof of funds basically

Then any one in Manitoba (Winnipeg or Brandon) please Dm me.

Thank you
TravelRe: Living In Canada/Life As A Canadian Immigrant by rainazoe: 4:03am On May 23, 2018
I just landed like few days ago but made a bank deposit. Can I get a statement to use?

AZeD1:
I believe a bank statement should suffice.

I feel you Virt. Are you coming alone or with hubs?

Virt:
No, I'm not short landing. Hoping to start job search soon but I'm also afraid that if i land a job now, they may want me to start sooner than I'm ready to start. I need time to get a house, settle my kids in school and my toddler in an affordable daycare b4 the work hustle.
TravelRe: Living In Canada/Life As A Canadian Immigrant by rainazoe: 2:05pm On May 22, 2018
Fellow Ontarians how did you prove proof of residence for your Ontario health card? I haven't decided if I would live in this province though.
TravelRe: Living In Canada/Life As A Canadian Immigrant by rainazoe: 2:03pm On May 22, 2018

My Short Landing Story

Eyin Temi bawoni o. Se wa?

So we left Lagos via Ethiopian and because I didn't want to be in a rush. We were at the airport before 9am for a 2pm flight. All bags were within limits and we only bubble wrapped the one with the most important consignment - food. No one said open your bag and we didnt have to get a receipt for food items though my mom who travelled weeks before us had too.

Get ready for the 'dash us something' from immigration point to boarding gate. I left Oga to deal with them. The flight to Addis Ababa was ok with ample leg roomy but our connecting flight to toronto was quite snug.

Checks in Toronto was ok. The border officers we met were really cheerful and helpful. Have the full address where you want your PR to be sent handy. I had to start calling to know the postal code. I also wasn't asked my list of goods to follow. Na me come they ask where I go sign and stamp am. My luggage was not checked in any way though I didnt have much contraband.

The jet lag no be here o and I think sleeping through the time zones on the plane helped. We were up early on our first day like before 4.30am

Right now I am cooking ogbono soup. Come chop.

Ekaabo. Make I shift for you.

Hello everybody,
Got passport request less than 24hours ago, i can finally take an official space on this thread. I have registered for about 5 pre arrival services today.

I am going to try and enjoy the remaining few months before i and my family move.

Still so excited and grateful for this opportunity.

Please landed seniors i would be asking questions on accommodation, jobs et al.

Please be kind to this Canadian JJC.
TravelRe: Living In Canada/Life As A Canadian Immigrant by rainazoe: 3:16pm On May 18, 2018
Thank you Sir. I am clear now.

Blackbuddy:
Well, you're required to provide a list of all goods accompanying you on your landing trip especially if they have appreciable value to avoid getting taxed on them. Any goods you bring on subsequent trips could be taxed, operative word being 'could'. What people do is to get a list of goods coming later, that is, 'goods to follow' and present during short landing so that when you are finally set to come fully, those goods will escape the tax hammer. Hope this clarifies your question.
TravelRe: Living In Canada/Life As A Canadian Immigrant by rainazoe: 9:05am On May 18, 2018
Somebody answer pleaee

rainazoe:
Please do I have to do a list of accompanying and goods to follow for a short landing?

TravelRe: Living In Canada/Life As A Canadian Immigrant by rainazoe: 5:32am On May 18, 2018
I'd say 6 months is more realistic. Movement between provinces is still unclear to me. I mailed both Ontario and BC and their response confused me really.

vcole:
Thanks @rainazoe @vascey @muchiao Very useful info.
How long did it take you in total? Is an estimated 4-6mths realistic? Also if you have cpa ontario or bc membership, is it possible to transfer it to anothet province?
TravelRe: Living In Canada/Life As A Canadian Immigrant by rainazoe: 8:38pm On May 17, 2018
If you are not relocating to CA immediately, allow them to take their time o because once the processing is done, your fees become payable and it is not small money. Mine is $965 and I had to plead for an extension from April to May.

Please did any one leave their fees payable hanging until they were ready? CPA BC said if I don't pay up, I would start all over again.

Muchaio:
I think it's the whole CPA jare. Ontario too has changed. Now it takes over 1 month to even acknowledge your email. Submitted last document required January 3rd, it wasn't acknowledged until February 6th. Since then, silence. They actually said the process takes at least 12 weeks now due to increased workload. I'm just hoping they free me this month.

This whole waka is a test of patience.
TravelRe: Living In Canada/Life As A Canadian Immigrant by rainazoe: 2:04pm On May 17, 2018
I don't know about CPA Alberta but Ontario and BC are currently processing.

The first step is to mail either office. I favor Ontario because most people have testified they are quite responsive unlike BC. I would write from the BC perspective cos I used them.

Your friend has to either have his transcript ready or do a course by course evaluation WES or any evaluation body. I used my transcript because it was cheaper. The CPA body will send a form to fill and also request ACCA letter of good standing. This can be gotten via email to ACCA.

He will also have to pass an online exam on the overview of CA law and tax which is easy peasy but expensive (CAD537 tax incl).

Once they are satisfied, he send over notarised copied of two IDs and wait for finance dept to tell him the cost of membership. Mine is$965 (excluding tax) because I am still in Nigeria.

vcole:
Hi everyone. It's been a while. Tried to catch up on the thread. 280 pages plus! Congrats to all recent landed immigrants, ppr recipients, ppr hopefuls, etc.
@virt @rainazoe @happytbaby @honey86 plus anyone with experience regarding the acca to cpa conversion, mbok can you help me with a link to info about how long it takes and whether only cpa ontario and cpa bc accept apps for the conversion? Does cpa alberta accept it? Just trying to garner info for a friend who is in the process. As I am quite clueless about the kinks around the cpa thingy, whatever info you have would be quite helpful. Thanks in advance.
@bbaby84, i had my own scare last week when my almost 4yo decided to take himself and his younger sibling visiting down d hall to a neighbour's house unbeknownst to me. It was a nightmare....one that has led to extra locks installation.
TravelRe: Living In Canada/Life As A Canadian Immigrant by rainazoe: 9:35pm On Apr 21, 2018
At least you saved some money. Not sure about them asking that you pay tax if you happen to relocate this year o. I am still thinking about how to pay membership fees now.

Virt:
I wrote to CPA BC, they said the zero rated tax for non Canada residents is effective this year and that there is no retrospective application.

With the online payment, once you declare you are non-resident and put in your foreign country address, the taxes are automatically removed. They seem to use a software to confirm the address and one's location to confirm (this was stated on the site).

I eventually paid 515cad as against 573.25cad. Good deal.

By the way, if I relocate to Canada later in the year, would I be asked to pay up the tax element since I would then be resident in Canada and the CPA dues covers some period that I would be in Canny?

Still waiting for PPR though.
TravelRe: Living In Canada/Life As A Canadian Immigrant by rainazoe: 9:29pm On Apr 21, 2018
It's BC.

Virt:
@Rainazoe, is your membership with CPA BC or Ontario, cos mine is with BC.
TravelRe: Living In Canada/Life As A Canadian Immigrant by rainazoe: 11:43am On Apr 19, 2018
On my application to membership I filled a GST non resident form to avoid being taxed. My bill to membership still came to over $1000. Contact them for the form.

Virt:
Obtaining CPA designation through the MRA is with ACCA not ICAN.

On another note, CPA (BC) annual dues for 2018 for non Canadian resident members is 573.25cad. GST/HST taxes of 58cad included in the fees

Please landed seniors, should non Canadian residents be taxed? if not, how can one claim them back?

Blingyrie:
Hi Rainzoe,
If you are going to be arriving in Canada within a month, then u can use ur desired city on ur profile. Find below sample of d pitch I used:

Hello firstname,

Thank you for accepting my invite to connect.

I requested for a connection
TravelRe: Living In Canada/Life As A Canadian Immigrant by rainazoe: 6:05am On Apr 12, 2018
Hey Blingyrie. I am so sorry about your experience here. Thank you for coming back to share with us.

For LinkedIn, I noticed once the recruiter/manager sensed I am not in Canada, they ignored me even after connecting. So did not accept connection. Or maybe my game isn't tight enough.

Can you share your pitch here so we could learn? Please? Thank you.

Blingyrie:
Hello All, I feel I should write a synopsis of my journey to encourage someone out there.
My journey started last year when I got pr in September, 2017; I was immediately bombarded with confusion and fear. I cam on this thread to enquire in how to proceed but got no responses. Sometimes the way we respond to people’s innocent and seemingly stupid (to us) questions here is rather discouraging.
Anyways, I never commented on the thread again till now. Luckily the internet has any kind of info you need and I invested a chunk of my time on it in research. I got into canny in September and was admitted to a masters program. Now because of my pr, my tuition was automatically halved. That was the first joy! Now I had extra money to invest in my employability. Being in banking, for fun I tried out d CSC exam n made d first exam comfortably but wasn’t looking for work yet as am still enrolled in fulltime studies. So I updated my LinkedIn with d CSC in progress n exam 1 passed. Having always heard about d efficacy of LinkedIn, I decided to test it by looking for a bank job only tru d platform. In February, I changed my profile pic, strategically invited recruiters n top managers at d banks I wud love to continue my career to connect wit me and prepared a self-reflecting elevator pitch. So as dey accept n connect wit me, I send dem my prepared pitch tailored to their names n positions. By February ending I had 2 phone interviews which progressed rather rapidly to job offers. Am accepting a part time job now so as to round up my course work b4 beginning at a fulltime position later in d year.
So wats my story’s point?
* be prepared to do your research on internet; use variety of resources
* remain focus on ur plan
* please please LinkedIn is ur best tool for getting a job; present n interact professionally on it
* stop being dismissive of people on public platforms n guard ur utterances; mind u, u never know wen u may need dat person
* everyone has a distinct n unique path in life so wat works for one may not work for u; invest in urself

Take care and gudluck in all your endeavours

I understand. Are kilishi and knorr chicken allowed into the UK?

I’d advise you jettison any idea of trying to outsmart any system put in place by the authorities. Anything u know is not authorized, just forget about it. You can’t mask anything from those sniffer dogs.
TravelRe: Living In Canada/Life As A Canadian Immigrant by rainazoe: 7:10am On Apr 11, 2018
Someone dropped a hack on how to mask food smells when travelling. Can anyone remember?
TravelRe: Living In Canada/Life As A Canadian Immigrant by rainazoe: 5:49pm On Mar 28, 2018
Hello @Lumezinwa

You need to be a full member of the ACCA to take advantage of the conversion. Your B.Sc cert suffices to support your application.

I'd suggest you also mail CPA either Ontario or British Columbia for clarity.

Iumezinwa1:
Thanks for this detailed analysis .

Please i have a few questiions:

1. Will you be able to do the conversion if you have not completed your PER (that is just an ACCA affiliate)

2. Can i use my masters degree transcript along with ACCA certification for the conversion
