PastorAIO: And what scale is that exactly? I didn't know that there were scales for measuring impossible deeds. Are you suggesting that there are degrees of impossibility?
So you don't know about Jains but you are ready to conclude that there is no religion as hard to practice as christianity therefore Christianity must be the truth. Instantaneous and on the spot. (Unless you want to deny or explain them away) |

hopefulLandlord: did you see the part on that thread which said a religious person can ALWAYS ask for forgiveness for ANY sin?
atheists don't have a Skydaddy that they'll pray to for forgiveness and all will be well
there was even a thread opened by a Christian on restitution months back and so many Christians said a Christian shouldn't restitute
Promise10 was one of those
it basically means I can embezzle public funds and pray for forgiveness while spending the loot
and before you counter this, you have to provide a verse which Christians are commanded to restitute or Muslims too (if you know) I know say na wetin you go talk be this. The Bible is clearly against sinning willfully because of available forgiveness. Anyone doing this is going contrary to God's will (Romans 6:1). |

it can be argued that its easier to sin as a theist (especially Christian/Muslim) than an atheist I'm all ears/eyes. |

that thread explains "atheism and sin" in as clear terms as possible You have denied the concept of sin. It does not exist to you so how can we move forward when we don't have common ground. |

Seun: Are you required to pray elaborately five times a day with your head on the floor and your ass in the air while facing a particular direction? Are you required to cover your body from head to toe even on a hot afternoon in the desert? Could you be stoned to death for being raped, or have your hands amputated for petty theft? Are you forbidden from tasting wine or pork or listening to music? If none of the above is true, then maybe the standards of your religion aren't that high? These are rituals. I mean that your moral conduct, down to what you think is regulated. Islam has got nothing on Christianity abeg, and I have not heard that Muslims are forbidden from listening to music. |

CoolUsername: How much of a choice do you really get? Indoctrination, like I said can cause a person to hold deep beliefs in matters. This, coupled with the fact that most religious tenets are not to be questioned or changed, isn't exactly going to produce an open mind in that area. Isn't that what faith is all about?
That's exactly why we see people trying to twist the words of their holy books in a bid to for them into reality.
I'm not going to answer your accusation, it's baseless and unfounded. The point remains that you broke away. Why? |

PastorAIO: There are miracles in Jainism too. You'll be very hard pressed to find a religion without miracles.
What do Christians proscribe that Jains do not. The miracles are not on the same scale as those in Christianity. I don't know all the dos and donts so Jainism so I can't answer the second question. |

raphieMontella: funny enough..its actually christians that want to sin... Why---you have a ''buy-back clause''..so you want to sin and whenever you do...you ask the all-merciful God for forgiveness... And its forgiven..and you repeat the funny cycle over and over..
P.s buy-back clause is used with my full awareness of the words meaning. Even if SOME Christians do this, most do not and you also know that the Bible is clearly against this. (Romans 6:1). So you have to look at what the faith teaches and not what some people are doing. |

PastorAIO: So christianity is hard therefore it is true. Is that your reasoning?
Then what do you want to call Jainism. Super Real Deal? Jainism basically preaches non-violence and ascetism. I cannot think of anything apart from eating animals that Jainists proscribe which Christians do not. I also do not think that instant miracles (however one may try to explain them away) take place in Jainism. |

CoolUsername: Of course atheistic indoctrination is a thing. There are a lot of atheists who practise that, but atheists are by no means monolithic. I, for one, would raise my child without religion; he/she can later make that choice once mature enough. The problem is that indoctrination is intrinsic to EVERY. SINGLE. RELIGION that I know. True or false? Ditto for religion. I concede that upbringing is a major factor in one's choice of religion, but at the end of the day grown-ups get to choose. You chose to leave didn't you? Why then do you think you are smarter or wiser than those who have chosen to stay? |

CoolUsername: That's not what this is about. We know what childhood indoctrination can do to a person (see ISIS, Boko Haram, etc.)
All OP is saying is that it creates bias in the child's mind and hinders said child's ability to make informed decisions in the future. The worst aspect of this is that you can make a child believe anything whatsoever through indoctrination.
Have you been taking blue pill lately? I can also say the same for kids with atheistic upbringing. They are not given a chance to evaluate religions. They are brought up to regard it as unecessary and irrelevant. How is this not indoctrination? |

hopefulLandlord: you mean
plethora of engagements without end
na, even beer volcano and having sex with strippers would become a chore
BTW, you haven't answered the question The answer to your question is that one gets tired of doing the same thing, no matter how interesting after a while. You are already assuming without any knowledge whatsoever that whatever we do in Heaven is going to be a monotonous affair. But what if it's a different thing, a new experience each time. Let me give an example: Personally I love watching American TV shows (especially thrillers)- I really love Game of Thrones for example that I have watched it about five times (start to finish), others that I really love are 24, Homeland, Strike back etc. I have watched these things over and over and I only go out to look for shows that are on the same level as the above mentioned. Do you think I'll ever get tired of watching new TV shows that are on the same level as these? Absolutely not. As long as there are shows that can match or even beat GOT on the market, I'll never get tired of watching them even if I live for a billion years as every one is a new experience. You have been watching the UCL for years, are you tired yet even though it's the same football that is played every week. Why? Will you ever get tired of watching Real Madrid?...I realize that this is a rather crude way of explaining this but I believe you get the point. CC: Lennycool |

I have taken the time to read through your rather long write-up and I think I agree with you to a great degree, especially the part you talked about the love of sin as a reason for many people turning to atheism and wishing the inevitable away. The standards set by Christ are incredibly high- they border on ridiculous at first glance and at face value. This explains why skeptics appear to be lenient on other belief systems compared to Christianity. This leads me to the rational suspicion that Christianity is the real deal. Add supernatural occurences to the mix and we have a winner. |

hopefulLandlord: its obvious eternity would get very boring after a while; imagine "enjoying" for eternity
that "enjoyment" would turn to "suffering" if you don't suffer once in a while
let's imagine there's a food you regard as your best food but you can't afford to eat that food everyday because its pretty expensive; so you eat this food once in a while and you enjoy it every time; you tell everyone who cares to listen that you would love eating the food for the rest of your life if you can afford it and you actually mean it
one day, you got a letter from the court that a very distant relative of yours who only knew you as a baby and had drifted apart from you since then died of old age and left you £1B in inheritance
suddenly you can eat that food you've always LOVED as many times as possible till you die
so you start eating only that, morning, noon, night
I promise you that you'll HATE the food before 6 months; when I say HATE, I mean real hate that you'll feel like vomiting anytime you see that food
why? This is a rather earthly view of eternity. Heavenly eternity is most likely going to contain a plethora of engagements which our very limited minds cannot possibly fathom now. |
