Islam for Muslims / Re: OAU Professor Durosinmi Writes On Muslim Students In Hijab by Rashield8: 12:16pm On Dec 29, 2017
Kingbusssy:

Ma brother
What you know is what you know AND
What you don't know is what you don't know
It's a sin for woman not to wear hijab in Islam
That's what make them different from others
Islam is a religion of peace and understanding, that's all

My brother, All I'm asking is for you to refer me to a specific verse of the Holy Quran where it's stated that not wearing hijab is a sin.

That's all !!!

BetaThings:

You appear to be the only one seriously interested in debate
So prove your statement above

Can you explain what you mean by ethnically-jaundiced?
Islam forbids ethnicity

I would be happy to debate you and PROVE that Muslims generally have been more tolerant than Christans

You see what I have in italics is what is what most Muslims find most annoying
Christians try to pronounce judgement on debate between Muslims
The fact is that not wearing the Hijab is a sin. AND I CAN PROVE IT TO YOU
It has nothing to do with culture - this does not even qualify as a fallacy!

Another thing, Muslims don't get involved in the Priest celibacy debate, tithe debate, white garment debate, women preaching in church debate
So why do you think Muslims should not be allowed to decide

Was that what you think the late Bamidele Aturu intended when he did not shake hands with President Babangida?

I agree. Do you believe that the rules of the Law School/Body of Benchers is superior to the Constitution as well as the decisions of 2 Court of Appeal sessions and a High Court?
And do you think BoB should bow to the Constitution?

You see the Muslim men don't go to the ceremony in their galabeah, do they?
That is the error in your argument. The galabeah is not required to be worn at all time
The Sango or Ezemuo attire is not worn at all times.
Check have you ever seen a Hijabite that you know anywhere (market, school, inside the bus etc) without the Hijab?
The others only don those attires for their ceremonies. And the call to bar is not one of their ceremonies
It will be sad if a nun is not allowed to wear her habit to the call to bar event

By the way, your statement about Sango is unfortunate. Clearly Sango Worhsippers were in Nigeria before the advent of Christianity. Nigeria was colonised by a Christian nation and the legal and socio-political order favours Christians. Would it be right for Christians seek the right to practise their religion freely in a system that does not ordinarily favour Christianity - say Nigeria were to be colonised by a Muslim country or a Budhist one? Should Christians have rights in China or Nepal? Or should they just obey the laws of the land?

That is not the position of the law

1. Talking about the 'Northern brand' of Islam has nothing to do with ethnicity or tribalism. It's common knowledge that there are more intolerant Muslims in Northern Nigeria. Let's not pretend.

2. All I need from you is to refer me to a specific verse in the Holy Quran that says that not using hijab is a sin.

3. Who has appointed you as the mouthpiece of all Muslims? Why do you keep on saying Muslims don't do this, Muslims don't do that? Personally, I get involved in all kinds of debate -including the ones you mentioned. But I always respect other religions.

4. The Late Bamidele Aturu was an activist. He didn't shake Babangida as the best corps member of the 1987/1988 set in protest against military rule. He didn't do that because of any religious reason. Aturu must be rolling in his grave because of this your unfortunate comment.

5. I'm sure you're not a lawyer. If you're a lawyer you will know that the Court of Appeal decisions are in respect of a different subject matter.

6. Ask any lawyer you know, being called to bar is not a right but a privilege. The fact that someone has been able to pass the call to bar is not an end in itself.

7. You keep mentioning the Constitution. Please refer specifically to a section of the Constitution that has been violated.

8. If your argument for hijab is premised on religious freedom, why do you feel so concerned that other religions may also use that 'freedom' as excuse to insist that a particular apparel is what their religion compels them to wear?

9. Apart from the examples of Catholic 'father' & 'sister' & the compulsory hairs that Sango worshippers plait, do you also know that traditional rulers can also start insisting on wearing their beaded crowns and not wigs? Or don't you know that Obas get called to the Bar too?

10. Like I said earlier, there are Sharia courts in the country. If Firdaus is very particular about wearing hijab, she should start practicing in Sharia courts. Why did she remove her hijab for the three compulsory dinners that she attended? Let's stop this extremist nonsense joor!

Basfaq:
please, can you telll us the law and qoute it where ijab was forbiding.constitutionally ijab is allowed, are law school's not cover by Nigeria constitution?,I think this is where they should know better but they knew they are just hypocritical.Ijab is part of our dressing, the Catholic and sango worshippers dressing are merely occasional.Have you ever seeing them go to any occasion in that regard before?but come rain come sun shine you would always found ijab on our head.

Wearing not of ijab is sin.The bible/Quran categorically mentioned it,so you can not use your wish and sense to turn the law upsidedown.we are muslim we bow to the will of God because we have religion ofwhich we follow it law strictly.I know if it were to be another way round,by now we not rest with the slogan of Islamisation.

This is exactly the reason why I made the previous comment. How can we decide other peoples religion for them. Even though I don't know so much about Catholics, all I know is I always see their 'father' & 'sister' in their garments everywhere-including in markets. Besides, it's obvious you know nothing about Sango Olukoso. I've never seen any Sango adherent that doesn't plait his hair! Do you also realise that there're hundreds of religions and different churches in Nigeria-with different principles and garment regulations. Don't you think all of them will also have a right to appear in whatever they say their 'God' commands them to wear at the law school? Will that not be insane?

2. You said not wearing hijab is a sin. Please refer me to a verse in the Holy Quran where it is precisely stated that wearing hijab is compulsory and and not wearing it is a sin.

3. The constitution gives the council of legal education/body of benchers the power to regulate everything that has to do with the law school-including dress code. Currently, hijab is not part of the dress code.

4. Do you know that sister Firdaus had attended 3 dinners of the law school without wearing her hijab? Ask yourself, why did she choose the final call to bar ceremony to insist on wearing the hijab? It was a premeditated action. She's being sponsored!

5. Do you know that Belgore and some well-known top Muslim personalities had persuaded her to remove her hijab in order to be called to bar but she refused?

Like I said earlier, I'm not comfortable with the emerging extremist actions/views of some Muslims. I've got sisters-some wear hijab & some don't. So, pls stop sounding queer!

I've noticed, and I'm seriously concerned that there's a rise in the number of Muslims in the South West with extremist views and tendencies. My observation is not only in reference to this hijab issue, but also as a result of what I've observed in recent times.

In our Yorubaland, there's an unwritten rule that we are brothers and sisters-regardless of religion. For instance, there's an equal proportion of Muslims, Christians and pagans in my family and town. Yet, we all live together in extreme harmony.

But it appears that there's a growing number of people who are trying to replicate the Northern ethnically jaundiced 'brand' of Islam in Yorubaland. I will try and open a thread about this before the end of the year.

....
Regarding the Law school hijab issue, my position is that Firdaus erred. Call me whatever, I don't care! Doesn't Islam say we should obey the laws of the land? I know that you may want to argue that one is allowed to disobey if it violates God's law. But the question is: is it haram not to wear hijab? The basic answer is that nobody can say with certainty that not wearing hijab is a sin. I repeat-Nobody! In fact, hijab has so much to do with culture & the Arab tradition than the religion itself!

The sister just wants to be an overnight activist. The law school is governed by laws and rules which everyone-regardless of religion must follow. If she had been allowed, Sango worshippers must also be allowed to plait their hairs while Catholic nuns and priests can't be stopped from wearing their garments to the Call to Bar ceremony. What is good for the goose is good for the gander!

Let's stop all these extremist views joor! The sister can freely wear her hijab in Sharia courts. Nobody will disturb her there.

I knew that their 'beef' wasn't really deep. It's only natural for overzealous fans to compare their successes and talents. Well, it's good for business!

But if you ask me, I think Wizkid is more talented. But Davido is certainly a hardworking guy. It's not every day that you'll see the child of a billionaire hustle/struggle to have his own personal money. So, Davido has my respect any day.

In fact, apart from the remarkable awards that Wizkid won this year, I believe Davido had a better 2017-music hits wise- than Wizkid or any other Nigerian musician!

That said, does anyone know why Davido decided to 'fly' his 'yellow and black'? Does he really need that? Well, it's well with him!

The current Lagos Commissioner of Police is arguably the most incompetent police commissioner that Lagos has ever had. His activities since he became Commissioner have been unnecessarily sensational and loud.

This Alaka had been arrested earlier. The Commissioner made so much noise about his arrest and the so-called badoo shrine that led many to believe that the man is indeed the badoo kingpin.

After all the drama of showing us the so-called badoo shrine, the said Alake granted a video interview where he said he was never arrested & that the Police staged the things that happened in his shrine.

The Commissioner never Responded to Mr Alaka 's allegations or explained why he was released. Now, there's a resurgence of the evil badoo activities & and the Police Commissioner has suddenly remembered that there's one Mr. Alaka somewhere! My question is: Why did they release him after he had been arrested? How on earth did they release a man with such serious allegations hanging on his head?

....
This is exactly how the Police Commissioner handled the Davido-Tagbo murder. The Commissioner addressed a press conference wherein he pointedly said Davido was culpable for Tagbo's death. But for a CCTV, Davido's life and career would have been rubbished just because the Police Commissioner doesn't do his investigations before rushing to the media!

The Commissioner is just too clumsy to be the Commissioner of Police of Lagos State.

Education / UNN, UNILAG & OAU Are The Best In Law School Results by Rashield8: 3:03pm On Nov 23, 2017
Key Statistics: UNN, UNILAG & OAU top Law School results, 134 foreign students fail, 29 Nigerians bag first class

Students at the University of Lagos, University of Nigeria, Nsukka and Obafemi Awolowo University, have emerged tops in the just-concluded Bar Finals Examination.

This was contained in the analysis of performance by universities in the August 2017 Bar final examination results of the Nigerian Law School.

While six students at the UNILAG emerged with First Class honours, four emerged from UNN and three from OAU.

Two students each also emerged with first class grade from the universities of Ibadan, Uyo, Lagos State University, Osun State University, and Babcock University.

University of Ilorin, Igbinedion University, Ambrose Alli University, Afe Babalola University, and Adekunle Ajasin University also have a student each graduating with first class.

Out of the 515 foreign students that participated in the examination, none graduated with a first class, 134 failed and 275 passed.

The analysis showed that 73 of the foreign students graduated with second class lower, 11 upper, while 19 had conditional pass. Three of the students were absent.

Apart from the 29 students that emerged with a first class grade from Nigerian universities, 211 also emerged with the second class upper grade, 1,046 emerged with second class lower grade, 33 were absent, 333 had conditional pass, and 3,000 had pass grade.

From the result analysis, a total of 1,272 out of the 5,924 students that sat the examination failed.

The result analysis also showed that 72 per cent of students who took the examination passed.

Based on the pass rate analysis, the University of Ilorin emerged first, with 94.9 per cent, followed by the UNILAG with 93.9 per cent and Osun State University which had a total pass rate of 91.8 per cent.

From the analysis, apart from the Usman Dan Fodio University and Madonna University, other universities have their pass rates to be above 50 per cent.

Education / Re: NIH, USA Grants Covenant University N1.5 Billion For Bio-research by Rashield8: 11:02am On Sep 28, 2017
Mature analysis
Pedagogue:
@Statsocial,

If facts-induced comments are what you call "unnecessarily antagonistic" then so be it!

With respect, I think you don't understand the thrust of my argument. Let me help you.

1. You said Covenant University was awarded #1.5 billion by NIH, USA.
2. You said it in a way that suggests it's an unprecedented feat in Nigeria.

On the contrary, I have adduced evidence from NIH that lists the ongoing research awards to Universities in Nigeria. The evidence shows that Covenant University has the lowest Grant from NIH & that NIH only awarded $250, 000 to Covenant University, and not the #1.5 billion that you quoted.

You have now responded by showing recourse to Fogarty Website & Not NIH, the supposed awarding institution.

So what does Fogarty say?

1. $5 million awarded for 'bioinformatics training in Africa'. Note "Africa". NOT Covenant University.

2. The Bioinformatics Grant ($5 million) was awarded to several Students under different headings, viz:

*West Africa (WASLITBRL): Adebiyi (Nigeria, CU), Peter (Ghana) and Doumbia (Mali).

*East Africa (ICIPE): Kenya, Uganda & Tanzania.

The total Grant to ALL the Universities/Researchers is $5 million. So, I ask again, where and how did you arrive at your #1.5 billion figure I repeat, the total grant awarded by NIH to Covenant University is the LOWEST to any University in Nigeria. It is $250, 000. Please we are still waiting for you to give us any evidence at all FROM NIH that shows that #1.5 billion was awarded to Covenant University.

For the umpteenth time, propaganda cannot deceive nairalanders. What rules here is Evidence, Facts and Logic.

I understand that IPOB have become so frustrated at the difficulty of achieving Biafra, but trying to divide Yorubas with religion is the most ridiculous thing that they've ever done.

The love among Yorubas, regardless of religion, is something igbos will never understand

Apart from the unbelievable things she posts on Twitter, she doesn't appear to have any smidgen of temperament to be the Personal Assistant on Social Media to a Local Government Chairman, talkless of the President of Nigeria! Her being the President's PA says a lot about the quality of people that are in the current government!

Education / Re: Why Olusegun Kayode Bello Was Expelled From The Nigerian Law School - Management by Rashield8: 9:25am On Jul 27, 2017
Pedagogue:
The craziest thing any student can do is to challenge University authorities-in this case, the Nigerian Law School. In fact, Cultists are better treated than student activists.

Although Bello does not cut a picture of a student union leader, he certainly appears like someone that has an unbridled penchant for upsetting the apple cart. However , I will not 'judge' him until I hear his own side of the story.

My wife is a lawyer & I sought her opinion before putting in this comment. Her first response was 'hmmm the boy must be a rabble-rouser if indeed he had problems in a less-activism Uni like UI & was rejected by his principal during externship'. She however added that the Law School is very unpalatable. And that students pay hundreds of thousands for facilities they don't enjoy, and that is why the competition for seats is fierce. Yet, no one must complain because anyone that is not fit & proper will be expelled.'

Given the information, I have, I will hesitate from 'judging' the young lad. I see him as a metaphor for fighting the injustice at the law school. Wherein lies the future of the Noble Profession if students cannot exercise their right to dissent. Why expel the poor boy for having a different opinion? All he simply did can be summarised as PROTESTS. He didn't beat up anyone. He didn't steal. So why expel him & start the chronicling of his 'offence' from his days in UI?

Expulsion from the Law School is like shattering one's dream. It should be reserved for the most egregious offence. In my view, this expulsion should not stand.

The boy should go to court. He will win.

Education / Re: OAU Vs UI, Which Is The Best? by Rashield8: 8:58pm On Jan 22, 2017
Pedagogue:
Many of the comments here are based on Bias, not Facts. Claiming that you have been to/graduated from any of the Universities is a bad way to start your answer. As this is an anonymous forum, any claim of being a graduate/student of any of the Universities cannot be verified. So, please give little or no weight to comments from people that claim they graduated from IFE, but UI is better, and vice versa!

That said, the criteria for comparing universities is very unique. Universities are not companies where almost every criterion is money-related.

Rather, comparing Universities require a consideration of a wide range of issues. Some of these are considered below.

(But first, may I emphasise that U.I and OAU are arguably the best Universities in Nigeria. Thus, the Op's question is befitting of their Yale v Harvard status in Nigeria).

1. Location: UI is located in the city of Ibadan. OAU; Ile-Ife. U.I's city-location makes it very attractive to students who want a Life outside campus. But the fact that OAU is located in Ile-Ife is a great advantage, as everything you need/want to do can be done in the University. Remember that the best universities in the world are not located in cities... Harvard, Oxford, Cambridge, etc

2. Infrastructure: I know from personal and professional experience that OAU's architectural design is iconic. It is better than any Nigerian Universitiy. However, OAU student halls are in a terrible state. UI has better halls of residence/better room:student ratio.

3.Entry Requirements: UI has a much more flexible and transparent admission system-It has always been. OAU has an unnecessarily tough admission process-It has always been!

4.Academic Calendar: OAU has been plagued with incessant strikes. However, U.I is also losing it's long-held reputation of having a relatively stable academic calendar. Nevertheless, UI wins hands down!

5. Tuition Fees/Administration: No comparison. Students in OAU have always paid less than their counterparts in UI. OAU wins. But regarding non-academic staff, both have poor academic and non-academic administrators. Unnecessary bureaucracy is the order of the day.

6. Quality of Teaching/Research: By world standards, both are extremely poor. But it appears from my experience that the quality of teaching in UI is probably better. Whilst IFE relies on the 'hard work strategy' of pushing students hard to discover things for themselves, UI generally monitors their lecturers, such that lecturers are made to stick to certain standards. A more scathing summary would be that IFE adopts the 'help yourself' strategy which in turn stimulates academic rivalry among students, while UI believes in 'spoon feeding' students.

6.Lecturership: There are more IFE products that are Deans/Professor than any other University in UI. In fact, UI has a reputation of 'buying' lecturers from Ife. They will not do this if they don't believe in the quality of IFE. This is what IFE does not do. This fuels the perception that OAU is too 'arrogant'.

7.Quality of Alumni & Students: Very difficult. Although UI has obviously produced more graduates, IFE has done very well since it's establishment. Thus, the two schools have produced very distinguished Nigerians.

8.Graduate Prospects: Both are great. Period.

9. Subject Strengths: This is where many people miss it. Both schools have their areas of strengths and weaknesses. For instance, UI has a better PG school-the best in the country. Also, UI's college of medicine is better because of the TH. However, IFE 'S faculty of law, Humanities and some engineering courses are clearly more 'respected' than their counterparts.

10. Notion/Perceptions: Go to IFE if you want to just read and read! You will meet like-minds: people who are ready to die from reading too much! Everything about the University is centred around pushing yourself to the limits. It's a school that will pass through you. Little wonder that they have the most passionate Alumni in Nigeria!

Go to UI if you want a less-complicated academic and social life. Everything about the University is normal and within tolerable limits. Read and pass your exams without any drama- And you will be out of UI so soon that you will have no serous emotional ties to the University!

But which is better As it is evident from the above indices, It's a tough call!
