BREAKING: Yobe State capital, Damaturu under Boko Haram attack

The capital of Yobe State, Damaturu, is currently under attack by Boko Haram insurgents.

Resident of Maisandari area, an outskirt of Damaturu, said the attackers came through the eastern part of the town and started shooting sporadically.


One of them, Usaini Maisandari, said they were outside his home when they saw the assailants coming into the area in hilux vans that are laden with Anti aircraft.

“We all scampered for safety. Can you hear the gunshot and explosions? I want you to pray for us please,” he said


Our correspondent confirmed seeing heavy armed soldiers in four armoured carrier and many hilux vans advancing toward the insurgents’ direction.

Electricity generation, the process of generating electric power from sources of primary energy, is typically the first process in the delivery of electricity by electric utility companies to consumers. In 2016, the United States recorded an electricity generation capacity of approximately 1.17 million megawatts and in that same year, around 1.6 billion megawatt hours of that electricity was generated by independent power producers alone. Electricity is most often generated at a power station.

The first power plants ran solely on water or coal following the discovery of the fundamental principles of electricity generation by English scientist Michael Faraday in the early 1800s. Today, power plants now rely on a variety of traditional energy sources such as coal, natural gas, nuclear, hydroelectric, wind generators, and petroleum, with supplementary amounts from solar energy, tidal power, and geothermal sources. The 2017 numbers for geothermal electricity generation amounted to approximately 16 billion kilowatt hours of electricity. In that same year, U.S. electricity net generation from hydropower, solar and wind sources amounted to over 600 billion kilowatt hours of electricity. Emissions from pollutants and greenhouse gases from fossil fuel-based electricity generation account for a significant portion of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions and U.S. electricity generation accounts for nearly 40% of the these emissions, the largest of any source.

Nevertheless, U.S. renewable electricity capacity continues to experience steady growth, accounting for some 18.3 percent of the total U.S. electricity generating capacity in 2016. The largest electricity generation facility in the U.S. is located in the state of Washington at the Grand Coulee.

Electrical generation by sources 1950-2016

The electricity sector of the United States includes a large array of stakeholders that provide services through electricity generation, transmission, distribution and marketing for industrial, commercial, public and residential customers. It also includes many public institutions that regulate the sector. In 1996, there were 3,195 electric utilities in the United States, of which fewer than 1,000 were engaged in power generation. This leaves a large number of mostly smaller utilities engaged only in power distribution. There were also 65 power marketers. Of all utilities, 2,020 were publicly owned (including 10 Federal utilities), 932 were rural electric cooperatives, and 243 were investor-owned utilities.[2] The electricity transmission network is controlled by Independent System Operators or Regional Transmission Organizations, which are not-for-profit organizations that are obliged to provide indiscriminate access to various suppliers in order to promote competition.

The four above-mentioned market segments of the U.S. electricity sector are regulated by different public institutions with some functional overlaps: The federal government sets general policies through the Department of Energy, environmental policy through the Environmental Protection Agency and consumer protection policy through the Federal Trade Commission. The safety of nuclear power plants is overseen by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Economic regulation of the distribution segment is a state responsibility, usually carried out through Public Utilities Commissions; the inter-state transmission segment is regulated by the federal government through the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.

Principal sources of US electricity in 2014 were: coal (39%), natural gas (27%), nuclear (19%), Hydro (6%), and other renewables (7%). Over the decade 2004—2014, the largest increases in electrical generation came from natural gas (2014 generation was 412 billion kWh greater than 2004), wind (increase of 168 billion kWh) and solar (increased 18 billion kWh). In 2008 the average electricity tariff in the U.S. was 9.82 Cents/kilowatt-hour (kWh).[4] In 2006-07 electricity tariffs in the U.S. were higher than in Australia, Canada, France, Sweden and Finland, but lower than in Germany, Italy, Spain, and the UK.[5] Residential tariffs vary significantly between states from 6.7 Cents/kWh in West Virginia to 24.1 Cents/kWh in Hawaii. The average residential bill in 2007 was US$100/month. Most investments in the U.S. electricity sector are financed by private companies through debt and equity. However, some investments are indirectly financed by taxpayers through various subsidies ranging from tax incentives to subsidies for research and development, feed-in tariffs for renewable energy and support to low-income households to pay their electric bills.

Electricity consumption data in this section is based upon data mined from US DOE Energy Information Administration/Electric Power Annual 2017 files[6] In 2017 the total US consumption of electricity was 4,090.6 terawatt-hours (TWh). Consumption was essentially down from 2016, with a reduction of 45.5 TWh or 1.0% drop. This is broken down as:

Residential customers (132.58 million) directly consumed 1,378.6 TWh, or 37.03% of the total. This was down 32.5 TWh ( -2.3% )from 2016. An average residential customer used 866.55 kWh/month and with the average US residential cost of $0.1289/kWh the average monthly electrical bill would be $111.70, down slightly from 2016.[7]
Commercial customers (18.359 million) directly consumed 1,352.9 TWh or 36.34% of the total. This was less (14.31 TWh) than in 2016 even though there were over 211K new customers. An average commercial customer used 6,141 kWh/month and with the average US commercial electric cost of $0.1066/kWh the average monthly electrical bill would be $654.60, down slightly from 2016[8]
Industrial customers (about 840,300 up 2,200 in 2016) directly consumed 984.3 TWh or 26.44% of the total. This was a little more (7.6TWh) than in 2016 (+0.8%).
Transportation customers (86) directly consumed 7.52 TWh or 0.20% of the total. This was a little higher (0.2 TWh) than in 2016.
System loss throughout the total electrical grid infrastructure by direct use of the suppliers (141.1 TWh)[9] and for transmission and other system losses and for unaccounted for loads (226.1 TWh) amounts to 367.2 TWh or 9% of the total which is down by 0.1% from 2016. Thus, the US electric distribution system is 91% efficient and efficiency has improved slightly over the last year.
In addition from consumption from the electrical grid, the US consumers consumed an estimated additional 23.99 TWh from small scale solar systems. This will be included in the per capita data below.

Electricity consumption per person (per capita) is based upon data mined from US DOE Energy Information Administration/Electric Power Annual 2017 files[10] Population[11] data is from Demographics of the United States. Per capita consumption in 2017 is 12,632 kWh. This is down 229 kWh from 2016 and down 7.5% from a decade ago and down 8.0% from its peak in 2007. The following table shows the yearly US per capita consumption by fuel source from 1999 to 2017.

Kano State Governor, Mr Umar Ganduje, on Monday called the Peoples Democratic Party bad losers for challenging his re-election in court.

The PDP had filed a petition against Ganduje’s re-election for a second term at the Election Petitions Tribunal.


The governor also said he was not afraid of the petition and was ready to face his challengers at the tribunal.

He spoke with State House correspondents in Abuja shortly after meeting with the Chief of Staff to the President, Abba Kyari, at the Presidential Villa.

The Independent National Electoral Commission had declared Ganduje the winner of the March 23 governorship poll.

He defeated the PDP’s candidate, Abba Yusuf, who has since gone to the tribunal.

The governor said, “I came to consult with the Chief of Staff that Kano is peaceful; people are jubilating and I am happy to inform him that everything is normal.

“All that you see on the social media is fake, false and he (Kyari) is happy about that.”

On the petition by the PDP, he said he was ready for the opposition.

“Well, we are waiting for them; we know that they are not good losers anyway. So, it is common to go to the tribunal, we are ready to meet them because the first election they committed a lot of fraud, a lot of irregularities and the supplementary election was fair and free.


“It was carried out in 28 Local Governments; they didn’t win a single Local Government out of the 28, so that is giving them a lot of pain. So, we are ready to go to the tribunal”, he added.

I just watched a video clip of your #March4Zamfara. First, I must commend you for calling attention to the deteriorating security situation in Zamfara state. What is happening in that state and most states in Nigeria proves that our country is currently being led by a President and Commander-In-Chief whose rank as a General in the Army ought to be investigated. Our silence over it is nothing short of a moral tragedy.

But there is a part I don't understand in that video clip of yours. And that is the part where, while being interviewed, you described the Zamfara State governor, Abdulaziz Yari as "The most useless governor in the history of Nigeria" (your exact word) for failing to curtail kidnapping and banditry in the state.

Forgive my ignorance, dear Kadaria but between a President and Commander-In-Chief who controls the entire security agencies and a State governor who has no control over his own police commissioner, who better deserve that tag of "The most useless leader in the history of Nigeria" with regards to the Zamfara Security problem??

In case you've forgotten, Madam, in 2016 when the Fulani herdsmen complained that thieves were rustling their cows in that same Zamfara, it was not governor Yari that acted to stop cattle rustling. It was President Muhammad Buhari who donned a military uniform for the very first time since leaving power in 1985 to launch a special military task force against CATTLE RUSTLING.

In case, you've forgotten again, during the reign of President Goodluck Jonathan, each time Boko Haram struck in the Northeast, it was always President Jonathan you, Kadaria Ahmed, blamed for not using his power as commander-in-chief to stop the activities of the terrorists. You never for once blamed any governor of the affected state. Not once.

Now taking anyone before the CCT by the President means the President will sit in judgement over his own case, because the CCB laying charges, AGF prosecuting & CCT trying the case all report to the President. This is a gross abuse of a Constitutional lacuna in the CCT provision.*

*Leveraging on this CCT lacuna, the President on Wed 23rd Jan 2019 procured a black market exparte order ex facie curiae from CCT chair Danladi Umar a man with EFCC case in court & open to executive blackmail, to purportedly suspend the CJN Onnoghen on Fri 25th Jan 2019 & replacing him with acting CJN Tanko Mohammed a Sharia judge. Sadly the CJN applied to the Appeal court to quash both the case before CCT for lack of jurisdiction & to question the legality of the exparte order issued ex facie curiae on which the CJN was illegally removed. But there again the Presidency was waiting in ambush. The judiciary had been earlier totally annexed as Onnoghen & his lawyers were to realise. At the head of Appeal Court was now Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa another sympathetic Northerner & wife of APC Senator elect from Bauchi. The Appeal Court went to sleep 35days as I write, after adjourning on 27th Feb 2019 to give a ruling on CJN Onnoghen appeal against CCT. Important judicial pronouncements from the Appeal court on such an unprecedented trial of the CJN was sacrificed by politics, ethnicity or whatever reasons by the Appeal court. It went to sleep in conspiratorial silence or collaborative neutrality even as we speak.*

*A section of the country now has a clean sweep of all judicial positions as determined by a ethnic bigot @the Presidency. This is a sad replay of how all major Security Agencies (17 of 19) has been annexed by the same section of the country.*

Without an independent Judiciary for instance there will be no checks &balances to despotic executive powers. Where now will be any Judicial independence The President overreached his powers to remove & replace head of another state institution - the Judiciary in disregard of the hallowed doctrine of Separation of Powers. If Donald Trump could so easily have removed US Chief Justice John Roberts, he would have long done it in his crises bothering on treasonable collusion with the Russians. We must remember our Presidential democracy fashioned after the US is far more expensive than that of the US given Nigeria's $450bn GDP & US $15trillion economy, 15times that of African 58 nations combined! We must remember the CCB, AGF & CCT all answer to the Presidency & more so the CCT Chair & members are not judges & don't take judicial oaths, neither do they report to NJC or FJSC but to the President. Now taking anyone before the CCT by the President means the President will sit in judgement over his own case, because the CCB laying charges, AGF prosecuting & CCT trying the case all report to the President. This is a gross abuse of a Constitutional lacuna in the CCT provision.*

*Leveraging on this CCT lacuna, the President on Wed 23rd Jan 2019 procured a black market exparte order ex facie curiae from CCT chair Danladi Umar a man with EFCC case in court & open to executive blackmail, to purportedly suspend the CJN Onnoghen on Fri 25th Jan 2019 & replacing him with acting CJN Tanko Mohammed a Sharia judge. Sadly the CJN applied to the Appeal court to quash both the case before CCT for lack of jurisdiction & to question the legality of the exparte order issued ex facie curiae on which the CJN was illegally removed. But there again the Presidency was waiting in ambush. The judiciary had been earlier totally annexed as Onnoghen & his lawyers were to realise. At the head of Appeal Court was now Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa another sympathetic Northerner & wife of APC Senator elect from Bauchi. The Appeal Court went to sleep 35days as I write, after adjourning on 27th Feb 2019 to give a ruling on CJN Onnoghen appeal against CCT. Important judicial pronouncements from the Appeal court on such an unprecedented trial of the CJN was sacrificed by politics, ethnicity or whatever reasons by the Appeal court. It went to sleep in conspiratorial silence or collaborative neutrality even as we speak.*

*A section of the country now has a clean sweep of all judicial positions as determined by a ethnic bigot @the Presidency. This is a sad replay of how all major Security Agencies (17 of 19) has been annexed by the same section of the country.*

A human Rights Activist and Author, Comrade Paul Ikechukwu Njoku, has lamented that the National Judicial Commission (NJC) has has shot itself in the leg by recommending for the compulsory retirement of the former and embattled Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) Walter Onnoghen, even as the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) had not concluded its adjudication on the matter.

Comrade Paul, queries why Justice Ibrahim Tanko Mohammad who was not recommended by the NJC to replace the embattled CJN on acting capacity was not also recommended for compulsory retirement.

Recall that Justice Walter Onnoghen, was charged before Justice Dalandi Umar-led Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) few months ago over alleged false asset declaration which led to his immediate suspension from the office by President Muhammadu Buhari, who appointed and swore-in Justice Ibrahim Tanko Mohammad as the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria.

After deliberating on the petition filed against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), members of the NJC unanimously agreed that Justice Walter Onnoghen has lost the moral authority to continue as the CJN with the litany of allegations bordering on misconduct. The NJC which handles the disciplinary issues in the judiciary sat under the interim leadership of Umaru Abdullahi, former President of the Court of Appeal, who officiated at the meeting as Onnoghen was already under suspension.

The council also concluded that that Tanko Mohammad did not commit any offence by making himself available to be sworn-in as acting CJN without the recommendation of the CJN and these recommendations have been passed to President Muhammadu Buhari for approval.

Comrade Njoku, says that "the whole process is disheartening, illogical and unfortunate".

Will CJN ask those judges to retire simply because they are carrying moral burdens? I had thought that justice can only come after trial has been concluded and judgement given by the last competent court of jurisdiction.

" I am very much aware that it will be hard for this government to allow Onnoghen return to office because of own cases pending in various tribunals and courts and of course due to fear of the unknown.

"It is very sad that the NJC has given President Muhammadu Buhari what he wants. Meanwhile, the saddest thing about Onnoghen's issue is that the entire South had failed. A Southerner wrote the petition against Onnoghen, a Southerner is heading the NBA! There are more Southern Judges in Nigeria! There are more top flight Southerners in the legal profession, but unfortunately, they were not able to stand up for their own. No Northerner would agree to be used to intimidate or cause one of her own to go through what Onnoghen has gone through".
