PoliticsRe: Gov. Ugwuanyi A Trusted Leader, Says Bishop Onaga by realglob(m): 5:52am On Mar 23, 2018
NCANTaskForce:
Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi is a criminal, a crook, a land grabber, only we in Enugu will tell u what we experience from him, Since he was elected in 2015, He has not commissioned any road in any other local government except Nsukka his hometown,

He is busy selling off every empty land in Enugu, under the disguise of land use act of 1978 which conferred the ownership of every land in a state to governor's for upkeep, in 2016 when he sent his thugs to step into the land of the people of Amechi, some men went to confront them,

Ugwuanyi ordered them to be killed, 3 of them were killed, others escaped, Would u believe that Ugwuanyi still seized their corpse for about 1year before releasing it and paying compensation of 3million each to their families?, After that he went ahead and started selling the land which those guys were killed in,

More than 1500plots of land, Without due process, compensation, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi will die a miserable death together with all those in support of his evil deeds, Now he is attempting to seek election, He started painting Sullivan's bus stops, What an idiot, If u are here praising him, It's either u are not from Enugu or u are from Nsukka,

Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi is a thorn in the fresh of the people of Enugu, If only our people will see reasons and vote him out & not succumb to petty sentiments, When the people of Amechi charge the state government to court for trespassing on their land, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi sent thugs to threaten the plantiffs that he will lock them up in Benue prisons if he see that they are serious about it,

He is using their gluttonous son called Ogbenye ga Abu Eze to achieve his aim in Amechi but they will all die before election month, Idiots.
Another pained idiot is here spoiling my governor's name, I don't want to know how much you were paid but all I know is that you are a foe.
PoliticsThe Silver Lining Of Restructuring by realglob(op): 3:07pm On Dec 04, 2017
I was in a forum where I mentioned a sage quote by Adolf Hitler “how fortunate for leaders that men do not think”. Just the mention of the name ‘Adolf’ was ample for the audience to nail me to the cross through their countenance and I grinned. I made a quick deduction at that point that people simply appraise a message by its messenger.

Needless to say, Adolf, I would rather say, turned evil, in contrast with popular opinion as inherently evil. This was so because the global powers hitherto prepared a fertile milieu for him to cultivate his evil deeds. For a better comprehension, please see the details of the Versailles Treaty of 1919. Just to corroborate a little though, the treaty was one of retribution rather than pacification, and that built extreme bitterness in him and his cohorts and such prejudice presented Hitler a horseback to ride on to become what we now know of him.

It will be fortunate for our leaders if we, the ordinary Nigerians, do not know that the unity of the country is suffering from a cancer called ‘the 1999 constitution’. It will be fortunate for our leaders if we do not know that the unity we celebrate today as a nation is like an ‘empty basket’, completely devoid of gratifying content. Lastly, it will be fortunate for them if we don’t know that such cancer needs attention called restructuring and if not done, would be, preparing in the offing, an abyss where we all might plunge into.

America, we all celebrate today, in order for her to find a common ground for coexistence, came together at Philadelphia to discuss terms of nationhood which eventually birthed the famous ‘Declaration of Independence’ in 1776 and the unanimous subsequent constitutions that accompanied it. For this alone, the country, despite her rough historical experiences, have managed to record huge successes in terms of development and otherwise and has gone far to crest her name in the global sphere.

At what point did Nigeria make similar declaration, for those we refer to as founding fathers, which to me isn’t but just mere elites and nationalists trying to acquire political control, were at their infants. History tells us the whites made it for us in 1914 for obvious reasons. Moving up to 1960 when we politically, not economically, bid farewell to them, we created a constitution that seem like the America’s declaration and it served us a base to coexist as a people. Six years later, it was altered by the military and from then on we got no opportunity to reverse this ugly trend, even at the break of democracy in 1979. Until 1999 when democracy reared its head again, one would have thought that we will return to that we initially agreed on to govern us as a people but fortunately for a few and otherwise for many, it remains a far cry to fulfilment. What we saw was a hand-me-down constitution of 1999 which is regarded as a stereotype of the military decrees with a false preamble ‘we the people’.
Having said the above, Nigeria today is said to have in practice; a federal system of government. However if there is a resonating call from virtually all quarters of Southern Nigeria and some pocket areas of the North for a crucial return to federalism in its true sense and nature as practised in the 1960s which some have christened ‘true federalism’ , it therefore means that something conspicuously, about the present system, is amiss. This thus begs the question, what is wrong with the present structure?

However, in my curiosity for answers to this seeming complex question and most importantly, to understand the reason for the nostalgia of the 1960s regional years, I began to study the term ‘federalism’ or what a typical ‘federation’ should look like. Fortunately, I stumbled on this definition from my pinterest android app ‘federation is a political organisation characterised by union of small states, groups or parties which are self-governed in internal affairs and are united under a central government’

I was glad to have seen this because it is self-explanatory. First it agrees with the fact that it is a political organisation ‘characterised by union of small states’, (even groups preferably, which well defines the composition of Nigeria). Breaking the definition further, it says; ‘which are self-governed in internal affairs’ which suggest having units with more powers to dispense and lastly ‘united under a central government’.

Will anyone in all honesty still call Nigeria a federation or a country practising federalism as a political system, having meticulously and holistically studied that definition? Of course the answer is no. Also, is such federalism feasible in Nigeria? Oh yes it is. In fact, it was, as mentioned above, explicitly in practice in the wee years of our post-independence until the untoward intrusion by the military which thus gave birth to the contemporary structure we have today in our political domain where the central government wields so much power than the federating unit (the states) thereby making it difficult for meaningful development to be actualized as well as creating a gulf between the ‘rulers and the ruled’, I beg to say.

For a country with enormous diverse ethnic groups as Nigeria, it is only fair and rational that her co-existence be negotiated and agreed upon to entrench a watertight unity amongst them. This, the nationalists, before and after independence, did before the military encroachment. They (nationalists) introduced constitutions (1960 and 1963) that recognised the uniqueness of the diverse groups, allowed regions to operate independently; both politically and economically, and relinquished little percentage of its economic resource returns to run the central government.
Just to help our sheer scepticism on the need for restructuring of the country. Federalism, in its true practice, does not guarantee a utopian system or development for Nigeria. But it is an ideal system for a country with huge distinct socio-cultural, political and religious groups that make up the nation. It will eliminate ethnic, regional or religious suspicion, leaving the various groups to harness their potentials and be responsible for their success or woes rather than blaming the central government which wields so much power and responsibility than it can even dispense, thus engendering a tardy development.

People are very correct to say that restructuring of the system isn’t the remedy to Nigeria’s woes but ‘restructuring of the mind’. However, what we should know is that it would be better to have the right people in the right system than having the former in a wrong system. Let me simply put it this way, it is difficult to plant a good seed in an arid ground and anticipate a prosperous harvest. Rather it is very soothing and rational to plant such seed in a fertile ground, well prepared, for a good season and expect a bountiful harvest. To answer the question of ‘restructured mind’ only as the panacea, restructuring Nigeria into the true practice of federalism is directly preparing a suitable system so that a restructured mind can have an easy and friendly atmosphere to function effectively and this we saw prior to the 1960s first military incursion. It is not to say that the 1960s was perfect, of course it had its flaws but compared to the inglorious structure we have now, it fared better, in terms of good governance, development and what have you. The current structure presents a wrong system with a wrong mind and from this; I expect nothing short of what we have today.
Restructuring will reduce the obnoxious ‘game of thrones’ that play out during electioneering whereby everyone strives ardently even before and during election just to attain the lofty seat of the presidency. Some even go as far as making elephant promises they sure can’t keep. Some reputable economist would attest to the fact that one of the reasons for the country’s entry into recession was the humongous sums of money that was thrown into public sphere just to attain victory. Due to the attraction of the seat; the superfluous power it wields, most of the contestants go as far as acquiring loans they cannot even defray. What happens next is that, after victory, they begin to make plans to pay back such debts in their little time of delivering the dividends of democracy. This alone, has increased the enormous dearth of needed infrastructure that ought to drive the economy atop.

Nigeria is so much a dependent economy, consuming more than she produces and the implication is evident on the current value of the naira in the foreign exchange market and the high cost of commodities. Hence, we must increase productivity. Too bad we’ve got to compete with other developed countries with superior productions which mean the chances of survival are thin. However, the solution to this isn’t far-fetched. We must endeavour to improve our Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). The bottleneck however is having investment friendly environment such as stable power supply, good roads and most importantly, security. This will, of course, guarantee ease of doing business. To achieve that, cost of governance must be mitigated while capital expenditure soars.

Returning to the 1960/1963 constitution is a lucid means to the above. Having two legislative chambers at the federal level, which milks the nation billions of naira, could be saved with having just one chamber on part-time basis with fair representation. Each lawmaker earns about 22milion or 29million per month excluding other frivolous earned allowances. We can infer the total sum the lawmakers gulp from the nation’s treasury in a year if we multiply that by about 460 legislators or more. Not to mention their surrogates. Imagine what would be saved if this cost is reduced and further put into capital expenditure. This, and many more like it, is the reason why budget cannot be fully implemented and thus needed infrastructures suffer neglect. This is not to exempt the excessive ministerial offices. Having ministry of aviation and transportation as separate departments is clearly irrational but to observe the federal character principle, thirty-six states must have a representation and as such, capital expenditure suffers. Even if efforts are to be made to improve capital expenditure, it usually comes from borrowing which again is unhealthy for the economy.

The bulwark of our economy is crude oil. It is refined in the Niger Delta region. However It is absurd that the huge proceeds from it today is nationalised as it contribute about 80% to the nation’s coffers but the environmental hazards it create, at the expense of the people’s subsistence, isn’t but left for the victims alone to deal with. Just 13% of the derivation is given to them. No matter how we try to blame corruption for the situation, it doesn’t preclude the fact that the government overtime has given short shrift to salvage the problem. Also, even when allocation is dispensed, instead of it being channelled to the most affected area, it is shared to all areas of the particular state, leaving an incomplete or diminutive response to peoples’ basic fundamentals. The end result is the actions of the militants. Well, with restructuring, the region will get as much as 50% of the derivatives which should suffice to facilitate development and extinguish militancy while our GDP grows stronger.

During the recession days, the government went ahead sponsoring hajj pilgrimages, providing pilgrims access to forex at subsidised rate. This of course has no impact on the economic development of the country because it falls under recurrent expenditure. Also, clearly such step isn’t beneficial to the various groups that form the country but a set of religious group and is capable of eliciting discontent among other non-beneficiaries. The consequence here perhaps would be insecurity. Restructuring the country to the 1960s constitution will allow regions to have independent constitutions. By so doing, if a region is perhaps dominated by a particular religion and decide to embark on such religious activity, or even modify its laws in consonance with their religion, it won’t affect other regions that see hastening provision of infrastructures as paramount. At the moment, whatever each state derives, is brought to the general table and shared according to the national formula, thus, whatever is expended at the federal level truncates the much that should go to the states for development purposes.

With the 13% derivative formula, Lagos is experiencing a rapid development. I can only imagine the level of development that can be achieved if more fiscal autonomy is given to the state. Surely, it may perhaps be capable of generating its own power, build refinery, inter alia. But such responsibilities solely rest on the federal government which also has other departments to deal with, thus, subjecting the fundamentals to redtapism. This leaves the federal government jack of all trade and master of none. Why should we have a state road and a federal road? In most cases we find some roads motorable because it is constructed by the state and within that same state, you find some roads dilapidated and abandoned just because it is a federal road. Ordinarily the state could tend to such situation without fail but the current structure militates against it. The fact is that the federal government has a handful of businesses more than it can attend to and this restructuring would address, by devolving more powers to the federating units which is closer to the people and which can respond swiftly to whatever issues that arises. It was absurd to see that mineral prospectors from Kaduna had to travel all the way to Abuja to seek federal approval before exploration could commence.

Every well-meaning Nigerian would agree that the process of state creation from the beginning have been unfair. Some regions have as much as seven while others, six, and even five. This disparity must be addressed to silent the aggrieved groups, for what is good for the goose is good for another goose I wish to say. This should assuage the feelings of particularly Southeasterners and give them a sense of belonging. Returning to the 1963 constitution will collapse the present state creation and allow for an agreed federating unit to govern the people.

The good about restructuring is endless. It will be fortunate for our leaders if we don’t understand the above. What we have today is what some have described as ‘feeding bottle federalism’ which makes the states indolent. It has to stop or as Mike Ozekhome, an eminent lawyer once quipped ‘we might be postponing the evil days’. Corruption, no doubt is the bane of our underdevelopment but despite its pervasiveness, it did not stop the indelible development that was recorded in the regional years.
I conclude by stating, a stronger individual may survive a 100years but a stronger system or institution, that abets fairness, equity and justice for all, eons. For some it's restructuring, for some, reconfigure, well for me, it's what Russians call 'Perestroika' but who will play the Gorbachev?. I don’t know about you but, like Charly Boy’s parlance, ‘my mumu don do!!!’. I believe strongly in the Nigerian jollof rice.

Its something of a shame for an Igbo man to bow to a yoruba man. It should be the other way round because if you start mentioning great people in the country we the igbos take the lead from sports , entertainment, poetry, agriculture, business, politics , education etc.. After all , a man called Abraham Maslow once said ''The most stable and therefore most healthy self-esteem is based on deserved respect from others rather than on external forms or celebrity and unwarranted adulation.''
You are a disgrace to Igbo nation.

Foreign AffairsBreaking News: Britain 'draws Up Battle Plan For War With North Korea' by realglob(op): 11:27pm On Oct 09, 2017
Gathering from the latest headlines from the news tonight, it seems the battle line has been drawn between Britain and North Korea.

It has been reported that Britain is preparing for a possibility of war breaking out with North Korea as concerns rise that another provocative missile test could trigger a military response by the US.

North Korea is being closely watched amid fears it could launch another long-range missile test on Tuesday to mark the anniversary of the founding of its ruling party.

Bellicose rhetoric from Donald Trump has heightened tensions in the region in recent months, prompting British officials to draw up military plans for a response to a break out of hostilities.

Below is the tweet where President Trump promised to do only one thing that will work.

President Trump has has said in the past that the United States would "totally destroy" North Korea if necessary to protect itself and its allies from Pyongyang's nuclear threats.

PoliticsTinubu, Oyegun And The Expensive Tears Of A Godfather by realglob(op): 7:30am On Sep 28, 2016
By Jude Ndukwe

“The wise woman (man) builds her (his) house, but the foolish pulls it down with her (his) hands.” (Proverbs 14:1)
Recently, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s media office released a press statement wherein the curiously acclaimed national leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) wrote what has been severally described in many quarters, and rightly so, as a stinking communiqué following the unrestrained and highly venomous language used in the said communiqué wherein the Jagaban demanded the resignation of the chairman of the party, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun.

The cause of these latest acerbic vituperations by Tinubu is attributed to what he described as “Oyegun’s comportment regarding the Ondo State primary” which he said “will become the textbook definition of political treachery and malfeasance of the basest order”

The story alleges that Mr Tinubu had a preferred candidate in the Ondo primary election that he had wanted to emerge as APC’s candidate for the November gubernatorial election in Ondo State. Prior to the primary, it was also said that the eventual winner of the primary, Rotimi Akeredolu SAN, had dared the feared godfather by asking him to keep off from the exercise in the state.

This led to an exchange of hot letters between the two. At this point, it became obvious that the battle line had been drawn between the two party chieftains.
The primary was conducted and Akeredolu was returned winner.

However, days later, some of the aspirants petitioned the party hierarchy alleging irregularities but the NWC as led by the chairman, John Odigie-Oyegun eventually confirmed Akeredolu’s victory and subsequently sent his name to INEC as the candidate of the APC in the forthcoming Ondo election.

Of course, such step did not meet Tinubu’s calculations who had expected that the NWC would understand his position and act likewise by cancelling the primary and conduct a fresh one that might likely be worked to favour Abraham, who was said to have had Tinubu’s backing.

This is the simple reason the Asiwaju wrote such a scurrilous letter to the chairman of his party as if he was addressing one school boy notorious for truancy.

Truth be told, Tinubu invested enormously and arguably more than any other individual or groups of persons in building APC and working for its victory at the polls in the last general elections. No one can take that away from him. However, he must also know that his hurriedness to reap the fruit of his labour is making him to fast lose name, fame, friends and associates faster than he made them.

The condescending manner with which he addresses his party chieftains whenever his biddings are not done is not statesmanlike.
Sometime in October 2015, while issuing a press release to deny a report that said he was collaborating with the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, to undermine the president, Tinubu had said that “It was a crass act of disloyalty showing that Saraki may have joined the APC on paper but has remained true to the malpractices and wrong aims of the reactionary PDP in his soul.
“If this nation is to have more than a fleeting chance of escaping the quagmire into which years of PDP misrule have taken us, we cannot allow these regressive elements to deploy their cunning tricks to divide and pit progressives against progressives”.

To use such heavy words on Saraki simply because he contested and won the seat of the senate president against Tinubu’s wish is the height of political recalcitrance. As at the time of writing his letter, Saraki was already Nigeria’s number three citizen. To address him in such a manner casts Tinubu in very bad light.

The former governor of Lagos State seems to always blame everybody but himself for every time his wish does not hold sway in the country. He had blamed the PDP for the woes of his party; he had blamed Saraki for becoming senate president against his wish, and now he blames Oyegun purportedly because his candidate did not win the Ondo primary!

However, it must be gratifying to PDP members to see that everything Jagaban has blamed them for has returned to haunt him. When Nigerians want to look for the most divisive and autocratic elements in Nigeria today, they all belong to the APC, from the president himself to its national leader, they reek generously of anti-democratic tendencies.

Tinubu must know that he cannot continue to parade himself like an overrated colossus that he is or else his political end would soon come. What he is accusing others of doing today is what he has also been accused of doing yesterday.
Prior to his forced exit from the party in August of 2014, Tom Ikimi had described Tinubu as a man of “reckless self-aggrandisement” who forced a weak leadership on the party with the purpose of controlling it. It is that same leadership that Tinubu has so denigrated, degraded and treated with infamy and disdain in a most impudent manner simply because it has chosen to have an identity of its own without overbearing appendages.

To describe Oyegun in the words which Tinubu did in his missive is most uncharitable. Describing your party chairman and leaders as “gangsters adorned in the tunic of party authority” and a “mercenary”, terms only fit for the gutters simply because of political differences, is a sign of creeping frustrations.

In a clime where discipline and moral uprightness are the watchword as Tinubu wants us to believe APC is, there is no way he would escape punishment for dragging the image of the party in the mud in such a despicable manner.

In another light, Tinubu may be pardoned for all his acts of disrespect to constituted authority since it is a well known fact that he has been sidelined by the presidency and even a lot of his ‘boys’ have since shifted allegiance to Buhari since after the elections, For a man who committed so much to the party but had none of his nominees accepted for any ministerial position or other key government agencies, the level of frustration is getting quite high.

He alluded this much in his latest communiqué where it was said that he “…even kept his peace for some time despite many things that happened within the party that were not quite right. He exercised this forbearance because the party is young”. Really? Eeyaahh!
Surprisingly, at his age, Tinubu exhibited the kind of exuberance associated with some boisterous teenagers who would act before thinking. If not, how come Tinubu chose the media as his first line of reporting an internal issue of his party? Are there no provisions and lines of authority for party members to table their grievances?

What is it with the media that at the slightest disagreement, the man runs to the press instead of first exhausting the crisis-resolution mechanisms of his party? Could this be a sign that Tinubu has lost confidence and trust in his party leadership including the president that he chooses to shed tears and wash his party’s dirty linen in the public?

Let me conclude this piece by giving Tinubu a word of sincere advice, that is if he would listen.

Instead of him to destroy with his own hands the party he helped build and nurture to prominence and power by throwing tantrums and creating scenes of political obscenity, it would do him a lot of good if he leaves honourably than remain longer before he is kicked out in self-inflicted opprobrium.

The stakes are stacking higher, the momentum is getting thicker by the day and the storms are rising higher against him.

He should stop overrating his importance or influence; he cannot be richer than Nigeria which his party controls. The moment a party produces a president, every other interest and power is assumed to be subsumed into his especially when the president is of our type.

Tinubu’s needless hate for the last administration made him to miss the answer after a brilliant mathematical working. He could not see that the man he helped to foist on us as president does not share power with anyone no matter how monumentally beneficial his benefactors have been to him in his journey to the throne.

If Oyegun whom he helped to install thinking he was weak could muster the political muscle to call his bluff, then nothing is left of the Jagaban any more.

It seems it is payback time, and in his rage Tinubu seems poised to destroy with his own hands the house which he built. When a godfather cries in the public, it is an ominous sign. The implosion is imminent.

May APC survive to see what Nigeria will be in future without them... I hope you understand that prayer?

PoliticsKaduna Tremor: Senate Warns Against Possible Earthquake In Nigeria by realglob(op): 2:23am On Sep 28, 2016
The Senate has called on the National Emergency Management Agency and other relevant government agencies to take proactive measures on the repeated earth tremors in some parts of Kaduna State.

The measures, the Senate said, included educating Nigerians on what to expect and how to react when a tremor occurred.

This is as residents of Kwoi, the affected community, who fled the town following recurrent earth tremors are now returning as normalcy seems to have returned.

While adopting a three-prayer motion sponsored by Senator Danjuma La’ah (APC, Kaduna-South) titled ‘Earth Tremor and the Preparedness of Nigeria to Deal with its Intending Consequences,’ the Senate urged all stakeholders to take the earth tremor being recorded in parts of the country seriously.

The lawmakers also urged NEMA and security agencies to intervene through public enlightenment and drills to be prepared, saying minimal resources would be required at the warning stage.

The Senate mandated its Committee on Environment and Solid Minerals to make a fact-finding tour of the affected communities and report to the chamber.

La’ah, while moving his motion, stated that he was saddened that the tremor had left in its trail a traumatic experience by the inhabitants of Kwoi and its environs.

The senator said the first widely reported occurrence of an earth tremor in Nigeria was in 1933 while others were reported in 1939,1964, 1984, 1990, 1994, 1997, 2000 and 2006.

La’ah added that following the tremor that occurred on September 11, 2009 which was recorded in Oyo State and other parts of the South-West and with the recent ones in Bayelsa and Kaduna states, researchers had warned that the incidences were signs that Nigeria was no longer immune to earthquake.

According to the senator, the Lagos-Ibadan-Ijebu-Ode fault system was another belt where an earth tremor was witnessed in July and August 1984, stressing that these fault systems could serve as a zone of weakness for the propagation of shocks from far away plate boundaries.

La’ah said, “Earthquakes occur at places called faults where jagged edges of two tectonic plates grind against each other and as the tectonic plates move in slow motion, sometimes two grinding plates suddenly jolt into a new position and the energy released by this movement creates an earthquake.

“Areas prone to earthquake in Nigeria include the fault systems (zones), including the NNE-SSW trending fault systems cutting across Ifewara, Zungeru, Anka and Kalangai linking up to the Atlantic Ocean fracture system. It is a zone of concern and the areas at the proximity of these fault systems are at risk of earthquake/tremor.”

Meanwhile, residents of Kwoi who fled the town in the wake of the tremors are now returning.

The Interim Chairman of Jaba Local Government Area of the state, Mr. Ben Kure, where Kwoi is located, made this known on Tuesday in Kafanchan, Kaduna in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria.

He said there had not been any recurrence of tremors since last Tuesday, adding that residents who had earlier fled their homes were gradually returning.

The chairman said although quite a significant number of residents fled for fear of the unknown, normalcy was being restored in Kwoi and its environs.

He said, “As we speak, farmers who found it difficult to go to their farms are now going and business premises are opening, while our pupils have resumed in their various schools.”

PoliticsObasanjo Backs Sale Of National Assets by realglob(op): 1:11am On Sep 28, 2016
Samuel Awoyinfa and Ifeanyi Onuba

Former President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo said he foresaw the current economic recession the country is currently going through in 2014 and he hinted of its consequences.

He also threw his weight behind the sales of some public assets but also warned that it must not be sold to cabals, adding that the number of shares an individual or corporate entity should buy in such public assets to be sold should be regulated.

He said this on Tuesday in his goodwill message at the opening session of a two-day  National Council of Finance and Economic Development conference held at the Green Legacy Resort, Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, Abeokuta.

It was held in conjunction with the Federal Ministry of Finance.

The former President, who lamented the current economic downturn in the country, said his warning about the recession in 2014 was contained in a lecture he delivered at the 80th birthday ceremony of Justice Akanbi on 26th November, 2014.

He brought a copy of the 2014 lecture to the event and read part of it to the audience.

Obasanjo, however, proffered solutions to how the country could get out of recession.

He urged the Federal Government to spend less than the country was earning, fashion out ways to earn more revenue and borrow.

“For me, we have brought it on ourselves, we don’t have to wring our hands and say ‘where are we? In a simple layman’s language, the situation is that we are spending more than we are earning. We have not been able to save, so that we can go and take from what we have saved.

“If you are spending more than you are earning, you will have to spend less, you earn more and you borrow.

“For us, we are to do the three as quickly as possible, we must borrow and we must go to the people that will give us loan with reasonable interest.

“You may do it with the World Bank or the International Monetary Fund. I don’t say we must not go to them. When I was in government, I never say no to them, but don’t do their bidding. Out there, there is money but people will not part with their money unless you are doing the right thing.”

The former President said that Nigeria must encourage production to earn more and increase its revenue.

He noted that since the nation was not in control of oil, it should therefore diversify on the things it could control.

Obasanjo, who harped on the need to develop agriculture, frowned on policies which tended to turn the country into a dumping ground for other countries’ products.

“I was shocked when the ban on importation of toothpick which we imposed in 1977 was lifted four years ago.

“How can a nation seeking to rank among the best in the world continue like that?

“We must begin to do away with things that we can do without.”

Obasanjo, who backed the call for the sale of national assets to raise money, described such act as natural.

The former President suggested that the government should consider selling some shares of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation to members of the public, but with a note of caution.

“I do not see why 48 per cent of the NNPC cannot be privatised. “I think the problem is in the coinage “selling of asset” as if we want to throw out our inheritance.

“What we are actually doing by that is simply reorganising.

“It should however be done transparently and let it actually go public and not to cabals, their relations and friends.

“This is always the fear of Nigerians when issues like this arise.”

The former President expressed confidence in the ability of the Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, saying that “she is doing a marvelous job in a difficult situation and that only time can prove her right.”

The minister, who spoke earlier, noted that the Federal Government had till date invested over N700bn to stimulate growth in the economy.

The host governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, and the Governor of Gombe State, Ibrahim Dankwambo, promised to tell the other 34 state governors to key into the outcomes of the conference which continues today (Wednesday).

Speaking earlier at the opening session of the third edition of the World Pension Summit (Africa Special) in Abuja on Tuesday, Obasanjo had said his advice to governors to save for the rainy days when he was leading the country between 1999 and 2007 was ignored.

He added that if his suggestion had been implemented back then, the country would have fallen back on such savings at this time of recession.

He warned that while the pension fund could provide the needed funding for developmental projects, caution must be taken in order not jeopardise the objectives of the pension scheme.

Obasanjo, whose administration was instrumental to the establishment of the CPS in 2004, said with the fund rising to about N5.8tn, there would always be the temptation to tamper with it for other compelling needs such as infrastructural development.

PoliticsAPC, PDP In War Of Words As Edo Elects Governor Today by realglob(op): 1:04am On Sep 28, 2016
John Alechenu, Kamarudeen Ogundele, Alexander Okere

and Toluwani Eniola

As about two million eligible voters in Edo State go to the polls today, the All Progressives Congress and the opposition Peoples Democratic Party have continued to trade blame on the alleged plot of some officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission to compromise the credibility of the exercise.

The PDP on Tuesday accused the APC government of Governor Adams Oshiomhole and the electoral umpire of allegedly inducing election supervisors to compromise the outcome of the poll in nine out of the 18 local government areas.

The state Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Chris Nehikhare, who spoke to journalists in Benin, said the party had received information of an alleged distribution of N2m by a senior official of INEC to the supervisors on behalf of the state government.

Nehikhare, who also alleged that the results of the affected areas had “been written”, ready for announcement on Wednesday (today), vowed that the PDP and its supporters would resist with “the last drop of their blood” any attempt to switch election results.

He stated, “It has come to our attention that INEC and the state government have seriously compromised the election that is going to take place tomorrow (Wednesday). People involved in this conspiracy are those that have leaked this information to the PDP and to us to act very fast.

“She (INEC official) has been sharing N2m to supervisors in at least nine local government areas of Edo State.

“What they have done is that they have written results for the nine local government (areas) on behalf of the APC. These results are being held by the supervisors and the collation officers at a point where they plan to switch the results with the real ones at the local government level once the election is done.”

Attempts by our correspondent to reach the spokesperson for INEC in Edo State, Mrs. Priscilla Imoudu-Sule, were unsuccessful as she neither return calls by The PUNCH nor responded to a text message sent to her as of the time of filing this report.

The Edo State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mr. Kassim Afegbua, denied the rigging allegations by the PDP.

He said, “There is nothing like that. They should go and face their election and forget all these issues of name-calling and making false allegations.”

Also, the state Chairman of the APC, Anselm Ojezua, described the claim as a figment of the imagination of the PDP.

Ojezua said, “That is a figment of their own imagination. They have lost the election already. I’m the state Chairman of the APC. I have been in my home area for three days. So, what time will I have to go and talk about bribing INEC?

“If anything at all, it is the PDP people that know the INEC people. After all, most of these INEC officers were employed during the PDP government. We have trained our agents and they are determined to be very vigilant.

“The truth is that all the plans the PDP made to create havoc in Edo State have virtually failed. All the efforts they have made to manipulate the process have also failed. They can now see that there is nothing other than the true transparent process that will give us result in this election.”

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room has called on the political parties participating in the Wednesday governorship election to conduct themselves in a manner that would not encourage violence by their supporters.

The NCSSR stated that the parties would be held liable for their supporters’ activities that triggered violence during the poll.

The NCSSR is made up of over 70 civil society groups taking part in the monitoring of the governorship election.

Addressing journalists in Benin on Tuesday, the Convener, Mr. Clement Nwankwo, said election observers had been deployed in the 18 local government areas of the state for the election.

Referring to a statement by INEC that it was ready for the election, Nwankwo said the Situation Room would hold the electoral umpire accountable for conduct of the exercise.

He explained that the group would look out for INEC’s early distribution and deployment of personnel; timely opening of poll; knowledge of procedures by personnel; voting procedures, particularly the efficacy of the Smart Card Readers; and the collation process, which he said had always been a source of concern.

Nwankwo, while describing the security arrangement for the election as “really very positive”, however, said Situation Room’s observation of the performance of the security agencies would include the exercise of restraint in dealing with voters and avoidance of acts of intimidation, inappropriate use of force, and other acts capable of undermining the electoral process.

Among other aspects the Situation Room would observe, he said, included the actual presence and deployment of personnel, reflective of the 25,000 personnel said to have been deployed by the security agencies for the election; and the welfare of security personnel during and after the election.

In a related development, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps says it has deployed about 15,250 personnel in Edo State to ensure a hitch-free voting in the governorship poll.

The acting Deputy Commandant-General in charge of Operations, Hillary Madu, who disclosed this on Tuesday, while addressing some officers of the corps in Benin, explained that the personnel comprised 15,000 armed and unarmed officers.

Madu noted that 250 others were drawn from the specialised units of the NSCDC, including the special weapon and tactics unit, kernel unit, counter-terrorism unit, undercover officers and others.

He, however, said the corps would work in collaboration with other security agencies across the 18 local government areas, adding that some flashpoints had been identified.

He warned individuals and groups planning to cause violence or interfere with the poll to have a rethink as there would be no sacred cow.

Reps PDP caucus demands free poll

Also, the PDP caucus in the House of Representatives has urged INEC to ensure nothing short of free, fair and credible election in Edo State.

The leader of the caucus, Mr. Leo Ogor, said this while speaking to journalists in Abuja on Tuesday.

He described Wednesday’s election as a litmus test for the commission as well as the APC-led Federal Government on its commitment to credible polls.

He alleged that there was a plot by the ruling APC, working in cahoots with some INEC officials, to rig the poll.

Ogor added, “We call for a free and fair election and nothing short of that. We urge INEC, as an independent and unbiased umpire, to forestall these evil arrangements and uphold its integrity.

“The issues raised therein should be taken seriously and acted upon by  civil society, the Nigerian public and the press to give credibility to the electoral process.”

He alleged among other things that INEC “surreptitiously, and in conjunction with the APC”, compiled names of persons sympathetic to APC to superintend over the election and skew it in favour of the ruling party.

Ogor also claimed that as part of the plot, members of staff of INEC, earlier trained and listed for the election, were replaced with persons from a “particular part of the country on the pretext that most persons from the South-South were sympathetic to the PDP.

Ogor added, “There is an arrangement to issue sensitive materials, particularly result sheets and incident forms, to the APC before the election to enable them to originate, take results and submit same with the assistance of security men, who will be deployed in the state from Abuja to act as conveyors into the collation centres and same shall be declared by their compromised returning officers at the police stations and other collation centres under police protection.”

The Deputy National Chairman (South) of the APC, Mr. Segun Oni, said the APC was focused and was poised to win the election because of the party’s track record of performance.

“We will win the election convincingly. By Thursday God willing, Nigerians will join the people of Edo State in celebration,” Oni, a former Ekiti State governor, said.

PoliticsWhy Run To The Monster You Ought To Run From by realglob(op): 12:56am On Sep 28, 2016
There is no gainsaying that; where we are today as a nation has been because of the way some packs of monsters have treated us and still treating us. It appears just that moment when they smell the sweet savor of our short-lived autonomy or liberty to make a choice, that crossroad, that could get us out of Egypt to the promise land, they suddenly come out of their hidings only to speak falsely about how they have been the Moses all along and how they have gotten the true message from the Most High maybe Jah Rastafari to drive us safe into that land of promise. They even go ahead to tell us deceptively how willing they are to get us there even if it means them just like Moses, seeing but not crossing. How preposterous you would say.

The Edo state election is nigh, and now I see pictures, portrait of most of these same monsters all over the terrain of the state. If only their deeds in recent past could be as apparent and as crystal clear as these pictures then we will gleefully roll the carpet on the rocky floor as an expression of gratitude. Unfortunately, what I see and many of my kinds, who watch with an eagle eye, are they speaking elaborately the message of hope in a mask. And the conclusion is that I, as a conce
ed and patriotic Nigerian will not like to see the proverbial thunder strike twice on the same spot, certainly not in this enlightenment era.
My dismay really isn't about their obvious way of deception but how gullible we are; the electorate and how docile we have been and still willing to. We cry everyday, we recount our ordeals prior to this moment, yet it beats my imagination that when given the chance to tu
the table around, we compromise. We resolve to run to the monsters we should run from. We prefer to act like Esau desiring the material splendor of Jacob and accepting an exchange for our birthright. What follows this is that wide vicious cycle devoid of its remedy. Posterity will not smile on us if these thrive in our dying nation.

Let us give answers without prejudice to these questions. First, why do these monsters allow their children not to remain in their ecological zone but fly into other habitats, find comfort and leave their parents back home to strive for their reign while the spoils of the victory, instead of going to those who join their parents to achieve such end, are flown to alien domains so that after serving themselves in their abode, they retire to enjoy what we labored for? ‘Hmm...Monkey dey work, baboon dey chop.'

Secondly, why don't these pack of monsters distribute guns and its equivalents to their children and wives and by extension, close relatives to perpetuate violence during the election, rather the hapless ones in the society, the, perhaps ill-educated or less who do not know his left or right, just for their own greed? They easily propagate thuggery in order to secure a legitimate seat for nothing but a fat slice of the national cake.

Thirdly, this money they share to us before and during the polls, where is their source? How do they get a refund, if borrowed? If not, perhaps through hard work, can one with all sanity throw out such hard ea
ed resources? Why do these monies get to us only when they desire our vote? How petty their magnanimity.

Fourthly, why do they bicker over such an envious position? Why do they tell us stories they are clueless about, only to get to the promise land and discover indeed the land was devoid of milk and honey as promised and foretold?. How amusing.

The questions are manifold. It is for us to answer in our heart. We may not be able to rewrite the past event but, preventing a reoccurrence isn't out of place. Let us employ wisdom in the polls. I personally will advise not to reject their gestures but note that they won't hurt you for taking your stand on the right path. They won't hurt you for breaching any contract with them. It's our future. We are the designers, am not talking about panda, let’s not run to them as if they are our saviour, rather we ought to run from them, and when they run to us, we remind them of their flaws and the consequences to our dear nation.

The last thing we want to see onwards is misfit. We may be helpless in dethroning mediocrity but still, we can prevent another from gaining entry. Let's not allow old wines
in new bottle. If we do, then our jou
ey towards prosperity may just be a wild-goose chase.

Once again, I am Kennedy Igwe…and am simply baring my mind on SHINE YOUR EYES NAIJA, while I sit on the imaginary fence, definitely will be watching with an eagle eye.

PoliticsDear Sultan, Fulani Herdsmen Are Not Foreign Terrorists by realglob(op): 10:51am On Sep 24, 2016
At the advent of renewed mindless attacks by Fulani herdsmen on fellow Nigerians with the height of it all coming in Agatu and Enugu where, as usual, hundreds of innocent and defenceless citizens were mowed down in cold blood, invasions which caused a huge outcry among well-meaning Nigerians and the international community, several eminent Nigerians have risen in defence of the herdsmen designated the fourth most dangerous terrorist group in the world by the Global Terror Index, claiming an alibi for them by saying that they are not Nigerians.

Sometime earlier this year, Lai Mohammed, the nation’s Minister of Information and Culture, had claimed that the violent herdsmen were not Nigerians but that they migrated from countries like Mauritius and others.

About the same time, Heineken Lokpobiri, the Minister of State for Agriculture, had also claimed, during a public hearing set up on the Fulani herdsmen attacks, that “…the herdsmen attacking Nigerians across the country are not Fulani but another gang of Boko Haram insurgents from other countries”.

Not done, another high-ranking government official in the person of Audu Ogbeh also came out to say that many of the herdsmen were not Nigerians .

Although Nigerians have insisted that the herdsmen were not only Nigerians, but also terrorists of Fulani descent, there seems to be an ill-thought out script by the oligarchs of Fulani origin and their misguided collaborators from the Middle Belt and the South to push the heinous crime of these terrorist herdsmen to places of no connection with the sad development all in a bid to continue to shield the criminals from scrutiny while they have a field day executing the evil agenda of the script writers against their southern brothers using the Fulani militia.

As if to confirm the existence of such a script meant to create an alibi for a murderous lot, the Sultan of Sokoto, a foremost traditional/religious leader, during the last Sallah festivities, and in his usual message to Nigerian Muslims as part of activities marking the religious observances,  had declared to the consternation of many that the rampaging Fulani herdsmen terrorists are not native Fulani whom he described as “very peace-loving and law-abiding” people.

When a man of that calibre makes a pronouncement, it has to be taken seriously especially as he is known to have also caused the extension of a national holiday by an extra day single-handed through instructions to the federal government.

However, the fact of the matter remains that these terrorist -Fulani herdsmen are not only Nigerians, they are exactly who they are: Fulani! The facts are there for all to see.

In an exclusive interview with Premium Times, Saleh Bayeri, who was (as at the time of the interview) the Interim National Secretary of Gan Allah Fulani Association, had narrated the reason behind the gruesome attack on the people of Agatu community in Benue State, claiming that the attack was actually a reprisal for the killing of one Ardo Madaki, a prominent Fulani man back in 2013. The newspaper confirmed in its piece that the Gan Allah Fulani Association is an umbrella body of Fulani associations in Nigeria.
Also, sometime in May, one Muhammadu Zurai, a Fulani reported to hail from Taraba State, and among the major actors of the massacre carried out on Nimbo community, Uzo-Uwani, Enugu State, confessed to the killings, describing it as vengeance on the people of that community. Narrating how the attack was coordinated, Zurai “confessed that they were more than 100 and were selected from different states especially from Taraba , Kogi, Benue, Nasarrawa , Kastina , Niger and Kaduna states” to execute the mass murder. These states are not in Mauritius or Libya, or Mali, or Niger, or Chad. They are all Nigerian states.

Therefore, it becomes a subject that everyone should be sincerely concerned about that despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary, some northern leaders and elders are still living in denial. This has further widened the gulf of suspicion among the various parts of the country as there are now genuine fears that those who perpetrate these heinous crimes would never be made to face the wrath of the law.

This also does not in any way present the northern leaders as sincere especially as the president who himself is Fulani hardly spoke against the nefarious activities of his kinsmen but only made a passing reference to them after much pressure from Nigerians. This is unlike the well publicized tough words and stance he has taken against IPOB and the Niger Delta Avengers.

The implication of this is that these leaders have deliberately turned a blind eye to a major sore in national peace and security, and the unfortunate situation continues to endure since no problem is solved that is not identified. Not to admit that the perpetrators of herdsmen attacks are Nigerians is a way of sending messages to security agencies that the real culprits who are obviously Nigerians are untouchable.

This is most unfortunate!
These Fulani leaders, whether religious, political or traditional, must learn from their southern counterparts, who, instead of denying the existence of hostilities and their perpetrators in the southern part of the country, have since constructively engaged the aggrieved fighters on ways to ensure that all hostilities cease as soon as possible.

They have not only acknowledged the hostilities, they have always had the courage to even refer the perpetrators as ‘sons’, promising to help bring the hostilities to an end, hence, Pa Edwin Clarke has been seen and heard calling his ‘sons’ to order; governor Seriake Dickson has been seen organizing town hall meetings on how to stop the hostilities; governor Nyesom Wike has been issuing warnings and threats to whoever is involved in giving his state/region a bad name; governors Okezie Ikpeazu, Willie Obiano and other south eastern governors have been seen organizing peace meetings and supporting the security agencies in their respective domains with logistics to root out criminality no matter who is involved.

The list goes on and on.  That is the way to go!
But what do we have our northern leaders do? They keep denying the ethnic origin of a well established terror group while their acts of criminality go unpunished. Such denials embolden the Fulani militia since their true identities remain covered by their leaders, an act that is easily interpreted as a tacit support for their nefarious activities, or, which some have read to mean an undeclared approval for the terror they unleash on innocent Nigerians. Such denials have also caused criminality by people of the Hausa/Fulani stock to graduate to religious persecution as Christians have now become targets of unprovoked attacks in the north.

In situations like this, one expects all Nigerians particularly the leaders, to rise above partisanship, ethnic or religious considerations in fighting the nation’s common enemies and help bring perpetrators of violence to book no matter who they are.

No doubt, the Sultan has the moral and religious clout to call on leaders and members of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association, Gan Allah Fulani Association and such similar groups whose members have been accused of being behind this terrorist acts to order just the way his southern counterparts are doing.

This is the least expected from the Sultan and other leaders of Hausa/Fulani extraction! The tension in the land is too much for leaders to continue to live in denial!
