What? I can't believe this... Please OP I don't want to provoke you but you bleeped up. What is this?

There are many rules that governing the formation of sentences, and in usage and answering questions, one has to abide by the rules to avoid the wrong use of expression.

Below are some of those rules.

Rule 1
The number of + PN + SV = Concord.
That is, whenever ' the number of ' is used in a sentence, the next presiding verb should be in singular.
Example :

The number of students IS increasing. (Not are)
Note :PN ( plural noun)
SV (singular verb)

Rule 2
Where is my travel bag = right
Where is my travelling bag = wrong

Rule 3
Doctor -- in abbreviating doctor, no full stop should come after the 'r'. This is because in the full form, it is 'r' that ends the title doctor. But "professor " will be abbreviated as "prof. Because "f" is not the final letter in the full form.

Examples :
Doctor --- Dr. (wrong)

Doctor ---Dr (right)

Professor ---prof (wrong)

Professor ---prof. (right)

Rule 4
The rule of proximity

The rule states that where there are two nouns or subjects in a sentence, the second noun or subject should be considered in identifying the next verb.

Examples :

1) Either the principal or the students ARE to come to the party.

2) Either the students or the principal IS to come to the party.

Rule 5

Few / a few
"few " and "a few " are used for countable nouns. "few " is small in quantity than "a few " while 'a few ' is bigger than few.

Example :

Out of ten oranges, 7 or 8 is a few
Out of ten oranges, 2 or 3 is few

For instance,

1) I invited many of my friends to my birthday party and A FEW turned up.

It shows that they are many that came because of the "and " hence, 'and ' shows positive.

2) I invited many of my friends to my birthday party but FEW turned up.

The same rule applies to "little / a little
But they're used for uncountable nouns.

Rule 6

Opportunity comes but once. -----(wrong)

Opportunity comes but rarely -----(right)


Rule 7

Nothing + SV + left, all + SV +lost

Examples:
1) nothing is left, all is lost ---- right

2) nothing is left, all are lost -----wrong

Rule 8

"All of "

The rule here states that in using " all of " for human beings or living things, it will will attract plural verb but in using it for non living things, it will attract singular verb.

Examples :

1) All of us ARE here

2) All of the students ARE in the compound.

3) All of the books IS here.

Rule 9

Coffin /casket

Coffin is a box used to carry a dead body or corpse while casket Is a small box where ladies keep their jewellery

Examples

-his corpse was buried with the coffin

-my sister loves keeping her jewelleries in a casket.

Rule 10

Cannot / can not
"cannot " means not possible or impossible while " can not" means in addition to.
Examples :
1) I cannot sing = negative statement

2) He can not only dance but also can sing. = positive statement.
