Prince reveals battle with epilepsy Wednesday, April 29, 2009 Prince has spoken out about his battle to overcome epilepsy as a child claiming that an angel healed him. Prince claims he was born with epilepsy The 50-year-old musician made the comments during a rare interview with PBS's Travis Smiley, when speaking about his early life. He said: "I've never spoken about this before but I was born epileptic. I used to have seizures when I was young." "My mother and father didn't know what to do or how to handle it, but they did the best they could with what little they had." "My mother told me one day I walked in and told her, 'Mom, I'm not going to be sick anymore.'" "She said, 'Why?' "I said, 'Because an angel told me so.' "Now I don't remember saying it, that's just what she told me." Prince also claimed that living in America feels like being on "a plantation" - and confessed that he did not vote in the Presidential election because of his Jehovah's Witness faith. for SOURCE: Click here |

Florida school not happy about church's sex sermon Monday, April 27, 2009 A church may face being kicked out of the school auditorium it uses for holding sermons, after it advertised a series of services entitled 'Great Sex for You.' The New Hope Church, of Melbourne, Florida (it's always Florida) sent out 25,000 fliers to local households advertising the services in the school, promising that attendees could 'learn how to have the Great Sex that God created you to enjoy!' The fliers, which were emblazoned with the question 'Is Your Sex Life A Bore?', prompted complaints from parents, and attracted the ire of the school district. 'We believe the type of advertising used is not appropriate for students to read in any elementary school,' said Mark Langdorf, the school district's director of risk management, who said that the district is considering whether to terminate the church's lease agreement with the school. Sex: God says ur doin it wrong Pastor Bruce Cadle of the New Hope Church said many Christian churches have been 'shamefully silent' on the topic of sex. 'If we could be really honest, I think each and every one of us would say, 'I want a rich and satisfying life. I want a great sex life.' But it doesn't come from following Cosmo magazine. It comes from following the word of God,' Cadle said at his sermon on Sunday. Cadle noted that the sermon on Sunday attracted 23 new congregation members. SOURCE: Click here |
KO for 'holy hatred' fight game Tuesday, April 28, 2009 Faith Fighter: game over A computer game which features God, Muhammad and Buddha beating each other up has been taken offline after Muslim protests. The game "Faith Fighter" featured caricatures of religious figures - also including Jesus and the Hindu god Ganesh - fighting each other against a backdrop of burning buildings. But the Saudi-based Organisation of the Islamic Conference labelled it offensive to Muslims - and have now successfully demanded it be removed from the internet. In the game, God attacks with bolts of lightning and pillars of fire while the turbaned prophet Muhammad can summon a burning black meteorite. An OIC statement said: "The computer game was incendiary in its content and offensive to Muslims and Christians. "The game would serve no other purpose than to incite intolerance." Game designer Molleindustria insisted the game had been misunderstood, but agreed to take it offline. He said: "This was meant to be a game against intolerance and against the one-way Islamophobic satire of the Danish Muhammad cartoons. "So if a respectable organisation didn't understand the irony and the message, we failed." Islamic law generally opposes physical depictions of the prophet. When a Danish newspaper printed 12 cartoons showing negative portrayals of Muhammad in 2005, Muslims around the world were enraged. Deadly protests erupted from Morocco to Indonesia, with rioters torching Danish and other Western diplomatic missions. The style of "Faith Fighter", with characters jumping, kicking and knocking each other out, mimics martial arts arcade games popular in the 1980s and 1990s. Molleindustria believes the OIC were responding to an article about the game published on Metro.co.uk earlier this week. The statement said: "We suspect that people at OIC never played carefully the game and only referred to the article on Metro." The gaming site also described the game as a way to "give vent to your intolerance! Religious hate has never been so much fun." However, the authors of the game did offer a "censored" option. Molleindustria's website describes the company as "an Italian team of artists, designers and programmers that aims at starting a serious discussion about social and political implications of video games". Other games designed by Molleindustria include Operation: Pedopriest, Queer Power and Oiligarchy, satirising the Catholic Church, sexual orientation and the oil industry. for SOURCE: Click here |
Most bread 'not fit for vegetarians' Monday, April 27, 2009 Most bread sold in shops is not fit for vegetarians because it is baked using animal products, food campaigners say. At least 90 per cent of loaves are made with additives which could include enzymes from the pancreas of pigs. These are used to speed up the baking process. But because they are destroyed during cooking, bakers are not required to list them as ingredients, according to the Real Bread Campaign group. These claims cast doubt on the vegetarian status of pre-packaged and in-store bakery bread, said Philip Lowery, director of the campaign, which represents local and organic bakers. . . . significant issue for vegetarians, vegans and Muslims 'This is a significant issue for vegetarians, vegans and Muslims, whom I believe would be outraged if they knew this was in their bread,' he added. 'We have written to the industrial bakers, asking them to voluntarily label their bread or stop using these additives, but have yet to get a reply.' Campaign organisers are offering the public warning stickers to put on bread and urging them to sign a petition against additive use. The Federation of Bakers, which represents makers of leading brands such as Warburtons, Hovis and Kingsmill, said consumers need not worry. 'UK bakers have nothing to hide. All wrapped bread produced in the UK is clearly labelled and strictly adheres to EU legislation,' said director Gordon Polson for SOURCE: Click here |

Kumuyi Counsels On Path To Heaven At Wife’s Burial Tope Olukole, Lagos - 25.04.2009 Christians have been admonished to live a righteous life, in order to make heaven. This advice was given by the General Superintendent of the Deeper Life Bible Church , Pastor Williams Folorunsho Kumuyi at the burial of his late wife, Sister Biodun Kumuyi on Friday. Pastor Kumuyi, who preached at the event held at the International Headquarters of the Church in Ayobo, Lagos, titled the sermon, “The Prayer of the Wise,” quoting from the Book of Numbers 23 and Psalm 112 verse 6. He said, “You have to live the life of the righteous before you can be like Him. If you are going to heaven, you need righteousness.” Speaking on his late wife, he said, “she accepted me as her teacher, husband and Pastor; that is why it is not difficult for me to preach today.” He also thanked God that his wife went home on the wings of his preaching and prayers, saying “She went home on the wings of my preaching and prayers. On Wednesday, before her demise, she wanted to go for the Easter retreat, but I told her to stay back at home since the whole process would be transmitted live via the Satellite. “Thursday, I called her, she responded to my call very brightly, and same on Friday. In fact, those taking care of her were over-joyed at the sudden transformation. They watched as she sang happily, then settled down to listen to the Pastor’s message titled ‘The Shield of Faith’, which stresses protection for believers, pulling down the strongholds and preserv-ation in the shelter of the Almighty Father. “At the end of the message, she became engrossed in the prayers that followed; and as soon as she heard the final “In Jesus Name,” she said, Amen. Then, she turned her face, shut her eyes and passed to Glory. Then, they called me from the retreat and I returned home, saw her and returned to the camp. She was later interned at the premises of the International Head-quarters of the church in Ayobo, Lagos,” he concluded. Dignitaries from across the globe attended the ceremony including the Governors of Lagos, Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola and his Ogun state counterpart, Otunba Gbenga Daniel. Others were General Yakubu Gowon, representative of the Vice President, Venerable Ozoronba, Bishop David Oyedepo, among others. for SOURCE: Click here |
Amazing story of Odo Owa: The birth place of Apostle Joseph Ayo Babalola Founder, CAC - Christ Apostolic Church OLU OSUNDE OLU OSUNDE who was in Odo-Owa recently, relates the story of the mysterious odyssey of Joseph Ayo Babalola The journey was as eventful as going to Cannan. From Offa in Kwara State, it became symbolic when we obliged a young man of about 40 to join us in our chattered car. The reality of what the man was made of came to open when, as we drove on, a camelion was sighted crossing the road. At the sight of the smallish creature, the man with beads around his waists, squealed and suddenly became agitated saying he would have liked to stop to pick up the little creature for medicine, had the driver agreed to stop. That distractive situation gave a clue to the multi-spiritual nature of the areas we were heading to. The herbalist, as we later found out, quite oblivious of our mission to Odo-Owa, reeled out to us various diabolical uses of the camelion and the relevance of its multi-purpose colours. Before Odo-Owa, Igbomina and Omu Aran present a stunned scenery. Apart from being noted to have produced some important personalities in Nigeria, the like of Brigadier General Bamigboye and Oyedepo, there also appears to be some parcel of lands earmarked for an extension of some private institutions like the Covenant and Moses Orimolade universities. As we drove along, one striking feature noted in Igbomina was the deserted nature of the town. At a glance, one easily noticed that a larger percentage of the modern houses in the ancient town was locked up without any sign of human presence. On enquiry, an indigene, Mrs. Nureni Eniola explained that most of them are traders in various parts of the country, especially Lagos, and that “they come home mostly at festive periods.” At Odo-Owa, our main destination, which shared a boundary with Iloffa, the atmosphere became exciting as half-naked children, some of them pot-bellied, ensconced in torn singlets and with sickly faces, ran out of their various mud houses, waving their enfeeble hands in excitement. At the outskirts of the ancient town, predominantly littered with mud houses, exists the extant relics of Apostle Joseph Ayo Babalola’s spiritual odyssey. Today, the greatness of this Apostle who died in 1959, is often underscored by the increasing spread of the Christ Apostolic Church he founded, and the belief that at least, 75 per cent of the churches in Nigeria today have their foundation linked with the church. Before the evil forest now Apostle Babalola prayer Mountain is a small stream labelled Odo-Iwosan a healing stream Pastor C.M. Oni the officer in charge of the stream claimed was sactified by the Apostle to heal the community of chicken pox that ravaged the town in the hay time of the Apostole's evangelism killing adults and children. The pastor who said he met the late Apostle in 1954 explained that since the year 2000 that he took charge of the stream “people from all walks of life have always been trooping in with kegs to take the water with many also coming back to offer thanks testifying to the power of God. “Since the sanctification in 1946, the stream has not run dry,” he confirmed. One of those who testified to the healing power of the stream according to pastor Oni who also claimed to feed and maintain his family with the stream was one pastor Joseph Agboola who pastor Oni said, in appreciation, built a church and a house around the stream. One wonder why the brownish colour of the water with some visible discomforting sediments do not bother Pastor Oni? To that, he simply said,” it is God’s awesomeness adding that their livelibood depends on the water which he said his family has had to rely on for more than ten years.” Confirming the power of the stream and the liberation of the evil forest which the people of the community dreaded, by Apostle Babalola, the king of Owa community, His Royal Highness Oba Michael Adegoke Adimula who Pastor B.O. Falogun, the D.O for Odo-Owa also said officially handed over the keys of all the buildings on the mountain to Pastor Nelson Udofia, the then President of C.A.C explained that the mountain was initially a den of tigers and haven for evil spirits. He said that Babalola’s trip to the evil mountain started in front of his father’s palace. Relating the story, he said that Babalola’s appearance after being spiritually transformed was a gory sight. According to the king, he appeared ruffled tying a bible with a fresh palmfrond on his head. In front of the palace, the Oba said, he proclaimed the name of Jesus Christ calling people to repentance and no one cared. “The belief then was that he probably ran mad and for a community rooted in African tradition his message was too strange to imbibe. “Perhaps, he continued, "sensing that the people would not listen, he moved straight to the forest. He was there for two week, calling people like the biblical John the Baptist to repentance. In fact, to our surprise, the tigers never harmed him and since that memorable event, people now pray and live on the mountain without fear of evil spirits. The dead Gateway to the world beyond A reference was particularly made of a rocky area where he said the dead appears before proceeding on a journey to the unknown. Curious about the claim, we offered to see the cave which nature constructed like a room carved exclusively behind a building. With the iron gate appended to the outer rocks by the Supreme Council of the Christ Apostolic Church, it has now become a protective room for Christian tourists who keep vigil on the mountain. In fact, it has become one of the hot spots where prayers are held on the mountain. Also visible on the prayer mountain are well protected spots where it was claimed, that a big snake crawled over the Apostle while lying down in prayer and the very spot where the snake was said to have mysteriously caught fire and burnt. The two spots have been preserved with fence built around them for tourists to behold. So also are other spots mysteriously marked on the rock where various spiritual activities took place. Each of the spots is explored by Christian tourists for different prayer requests. When we visited the spots, some Christians were seen offering prayers while an aged Bishop who has just completed a prayer session on the mountain was seen descending the steepy mountain with his Prado Jeep bearing a special plate marked Bishop. The District superintendent of CAC in Odo-Owa, Pastor B.O. Falogun when speaking to Tribune Church said that the mountain before the liberation was called Oru-Oko and that Apostle Babalola spiritually annexed it between 1930 and 1939 adding that it was in 1987 that the church decided to build a house on top. Also in 2005, he said, Prophet Oyelami (Baba Alasape) under the instruction of God transformed the place by erecting modern buildings. Since then, the place has become habitable attracting Christian youths from all walks of life. Prominent amongst the buildings erected was the one called Power House built close to the stream where as claimed, the Apostle had his first bathe as a baby. The Power House according to Baba Alasape Prophet Oyelami was built for men only, the inscription to that effect is boldly written on the outer wall of the house with arrow directing those who need the miracle water to the stream behind the Power House. Also preserved within the Power House is the mortar used by Apostle Joseph Ayo Baba-lola for palm fruits processing which is the major occupation of the Odo-Owa people. That today, the mountain has become an attractive place where Christians from all parts of the world visit for one miracle or the other in their lives makes it imperative for the Christ Apostolic Church to direct more of the resources of the church to the mountain towards making it a better tourist centre. for SOURCE: Click here |
Muyiwa04:@^ Is satan really responsible for all crimes? writes OLU OSUNDE with additional reports from MODUPE OKUSANYA. On the judgement day, the devil may stand to refute some of the criminal allegations against him countering those who are fond of attributive statements like: The "devil pushed me", "it is devil's work" One Tajudeen Abiodun (21) was arrested recently by the Ogun State police command for alleged rape. Narrating the story of how he indulged in the act, he said “immediately I saw her, something inside me just suggested that I should seize the opportunity.” The girl in question according to the rape suspect was drunk making it easy for him. 'The devil pushed me" Another gory story was that of one Emmanuel Benjamin who was caught making love to an insane woman old enough to be his mother in a back street. When caught in the act and beaten, he blamed the devil saying “the devil pushed me.” Similarly, there have been several cases of immoral acts ranging from stealing, murder and obscene ones like a father sleeping with his daughter with the fault also attributed most often to the devil. Recently, a military officer was accused of throwing his fiancee from a three storey building. Caught within the web of law, he also blamed the devil for using the woman whom he said threw herself down to put him in trouble. According to Pastor ‘Kanye Kolade of the Word Impact Bible Church , the devil exists and the bible confirms it. He used to be an arch angel in heaven as the book of Isaiah and Ezekiel recorded it but he was cast down to earth due to his pride. He wanted to ascend to the throne of God but he failed and he was demoted; he lost his glory and beauty and he was left with deception. However, the devil was defeated through the power of redemption by Christ Jesus. His major weapon is deception and this is what he uses to deceive us to do what God doesn’t’ want us to do, or bring us out of God’s protective arms. The devil sees himself as the ruler of day on earth. Remotely, the devil is definitely behind all evil but we human beings are not absorbed from being responsible for our actions and inactions. On the other hand, God has created man as a free moral agent, having power to accept or refuse evil, and based on this power we cannot escape from facing the consequences if we do evil. There is a story I heard about the devil, it goes thus, “There was a day satan went to God and said to God. “Please warn these your children for me,” why are they always attributing all the bad things that happen in their lives to me, when I know nothing about 98 per cent of them.” The devil was trying to defend himself. Talking about Joseph’s story, I would like to view it from two different perspective. Firstly, it is not every negative that is always negative – God works through negative situation, atimes; he works in strange ways. Secondly, God takes the devil for a ride — this was revealed when the devil thought he had defeated Jesus, he did not know that God only allowed it because he was looking for substitute for His agreed justice. The devil did not know that he was playing along with God’s plan. According to Romans chapter 8 verse 28, when we give room to the devil we become his lawful captives. Therefore, people should try not to always think that every negative, discomfort, inconveniences are from the devil; when we do, a times we may be fighting against God. Finally I would like to say that , God exposes his children to challenges to test their faith, to make them grow, so that they can develop the capacity to handle situations of life. For ArchDiocesan Linus Okonwo (OPL) of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal of Nigeria, the devil is wicked but every failure should not always be attributed to the devil. The reason why people attributed all evil to the devil is because they don’t know their right in God. People get into the trap of the devil atimes due to their lack of knowledge, ignorance and disobedience. The devil is powerful, no doubt, but Christ has given us the power to resist him. Eph. Chapter 6: 13 says we have been given the whole armour to face the devil in battle, we’have not been given the power to fear or run from the devil. The devil has so much threatened his victims with fear and the fear has now taken the upper hand. Yes, there is a devil because the bible says he is going round seeking whom to devour, but God has given us power to conquer the devil. “In this perilous time, as the Bible stated it, more of such cases are bound to occur, said R.O Akande of the Celestial Church of Christ. “If you want to know whether Devil exists or not, I implore you to go to any of the spiritual churches (white garment) and stay for sometime and you will see people coming to testify to devil’s works in their lives,” he said. “You may not find such in the new generation churches or the orthodox ones because they do not go into deep spiritism. Well, the case of those who engage in deliverance may be different because they equally experience the devil sometimes speaking out through its victim.” “When a witch confesses, what do you think speaks within her, It is the evil spirit in her. If you are of God and spiritual enough, the spirit of God can also teach you how to push out evil diseases from someone like he taught me on AIDS, said Pastor Egharevba of one of the Evangelical Fellowships in Benin. According to him, “The same way God speaks to His children to do good so the devil also speaks to those who open their hearts to him to do evil.” “When a madman suddenly begins to dance and laugh to no one, isn’t it the spirit in him that issues command? So, there are evidence to prove that the devil can induce someone to misbehave. The Ogbanje, emere, I mean those possessed with water spirits which are ephemeral, where do you think they get their power? Pastor Egharevba asked rhetorically. It is from the devil who God himself created as a fine angel and drove to earth when it misbehaved in heaven.” "The bible tells us of a riot in heaven but that the lamb at God prevailed. The devil is an evil angel that can use anything to entice you to do bad. Because it is beautiful and not the black way we portray it in pictures with horns, it possesses mostly the beautiful ones and uses them as instruments in its bid to destroy humanity by disallowing them entry into the kingdom of God,” he explained. “Amongst the disciples of Jesus, was Judas whom the devil enticed with money so as to destroy him. He never used out of the money before committing suicide, that is the way devil works. He will speak to your mind if you open your mind to him and lead you to do evil that will lead you to destruction, at the end you go to everlasting fire. Said Pastor Taiwo of the Christ Trumpeters Church. “So, if you are not careful, the devil can use what you love most to entice you to destruction,” he said. By their explanations, the devil is a spirit that is also capable of speaking to the minds of the people the same way the spirit of God does, inducing one to perpetrate or do evil. But what is, however, not clear is the difference between the heart desires which could be evil or good and real actions like that in the garden of Eden induced by a physical devil which appears in form of a serpent. According to one school of thought, without the eyes seeing, evil thought may not be easily provoked into causing the body to take unholy action. The question now remains whether we can really attribute the eyes' provocative actions to the works of the devil or not. To that, one Mrs. Idowu Adeyemi, a Sunday School teacher, explains that "the devil was created perfect and so always aim at those who have no deformity like blindness who he knows will not see the beautiful and the enticing things of the world; the type he showed Christ in the wilderness in a bid to destroy His ministry aimed at delivering the mankind." “So unless you kill your physical eyes by choosing to see only what God wants you to see which anyway may not be physically beautiful, you may remain susceptible to devil’s manipulations,” she said. Satan and the church “In Nigeria today, she continued, we have allowed the devil to triumph." “Today most of the churches are in disarray because the devil has planted love for material things in the minds of the Pastors . Rather than live by Christ's example, they clamour for big cars, big houses, society women making the youths to believe that the church now is the cheapest avenue to make money. So they establish churches for devil to take charge. It causes them to fight over money most times killing themselves, she said. “You can imagine that devil now leads robbers to churches to share from the material acquisitions that are now major features of most churches, a thing that was unheard of in the past,” she observed. “You really might be saying that devil in the real sense may not be speaking to those doing evil but what is the root of the evil deeds? You may want to ask. It is indiscriminate quest for satisfaction mostly induced by the nasty environment we now live in. An environment where ladies walk naked to entice men for money is evil infected environment where rape, murder, name it, can take place. And if the criminals are really sincere to themselves, most of them often come to the reality of what they do only on completion of the dastardly act." "In that wise, who do you want them to attribute such inducement to, it is the devil.” Mrs. Adeyemi said, "haven’t you seen a woman who after killing her husband angrily grips the body and sobs uncontrollably claiming not to know what came over her?” Some of the verses that back up the strong belief in the existence of the devil which has its root in the bible are Matthew 4:1. “Then Jesus was led up by the spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.” The statement smarks of a predestined situation. It’s like the devil was placed there to tempt Jesus. On the other hand, the wilderness being a quiet place could provide a room for streams of thoughts which if not guided could derail a hungry man from his point of focus. Going by the impulse of the statement, devil was not physically present. It was probably there in spirit dropping words into the minds of Christ, a word that contradicted His mission but which He resisted with the resistance spirit now lacking in many people today, the spirit, having been overshadowed by insatiable wants. Again in Genesis 3:1, the bible presents devil in its physical form represented by a serpent. It states: “Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman. Has God indeed said, you shall not eat of every tree of the garden.? Then the serpent said to the woman, "you will not surely die.” To that singular convincing voice of the devil the woman responded positively to the detriment of human kind. That the devil was referred to as serpent gives a different perception about the devil and its form while on the other hand, the statement could also be said to be metaphorical considering the stinging nature of the serpent. It is also possible for instance that the woman must have ruminated on the instructions of God allowing negative thoughts to stream into her mind since both of them had attributes of God which include ability to think. By her thought drawn by her admiration of the fine fruits, she must have inadvertently invited devil into the garden to lure her into completing the action by eating the forbidden fruit. The adjective, beauty, attached to the forbidden fruit is essential in knowing some of the ingredients of disobedience to God’s injunctions which most times lead to moral decadence and eventual destruction. Today, the bane of mankind spiritual development is unhindered craze for material beauty. The quest for it leads to unhealtly competition with the multiplier effects being envy and jealousy which are accessories to crime. According to a school of thought, criminality is by necessity or choice not induced by any known devil but necessitated by needs According to the school of thought, where there is growing poverty amid plenty, there is bound to be crime because crime “is almost a normal, if not excusable reactions to grinding poverty, instability and despair that pervaded (the criminals) lives.” It goes to say, therefore, that until we agree and prove that devil is a product of poverty and despair that most people can subscribe to the assertion that every evil act comes from the devil, otherwise, we might just be unfair to the devil in the attribution of our individual guilts for SOURCE: Click here |

By Saeed Shah in Islamabad 25 Apr 2009 [flash=400,350] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ul-sIPzGHxw&hl=en&fs=1[/flash] Taliban execution(Warning: contains distressing footage) Taliban gunmen have been filmed executing a surprised couple whom they repeatedly shot for the alleged crime of adultery. Their deaths were squalid, riddled with bullets in a field near their home by Taliban gunmen as the execution was captured on a mobile telephone. In footage which is being watched with horror by Pakistanis, the couple try to flee when they realise what is about to happen. But a gunman casually shoots the man and then the woman in the back with a burst of gunfire, leaving them bleeding in the dirt. Moments later, when others in the execution party shout out that they are still alive, he returns to coldly finish them with a few more rounds. Their "crime" was an alleged affair in their remote mountain village controlled by militants in an area that was only recently under the government's sway. It was the kind of barbarity that has become increasingly familiar across Pakistan as the Taliban tide has spread. But this time, with black-turbaned gunmen almost at the gates of Islamabad, the rare footage has shown urban Pakistanis what could now await them. Admiral Mike Mullen, chairman of the United States Joint Chiefs of Staff, has warned that Islamic extremists could take over the nation. In the past few days the footage has circulated among Pakistanis who usually show little interest in the rough ways of the distant frontier regions. They have now started to wake up to the fear that al-Qaeda-linked rebels from the frontier could take over their nation. The killings happened in Hangu district, in North West Frontier Province, about two hours drive from the regional capital Peshawar. The punishment was administered by a local group of the Pakistani Taliban, the Islamic militia which has swept across the NWFP towards the capital Islamabad. Last week, the Taliban had reached within 60 miles of Islamabad, in Buner district. Their takeover sparked panic in the West, which was already appalled by a peace deal that the government had signed this month with Taliban in adjacent the Swat valley. In an extraordinary move, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, called on the people of Pakistan to defy their government, saying they "need to speak out forcefully against a policy that is ceding more and more territory to the insurgents". The Taliban had agreed a withdrawal, in the last couple of days, to their stronghold of Swat. That will scarcely make the government and elite in the capital Islamabad feel much safer, as Swat is only 100 miles from them. "The Taliban are steady and confident, the government is weak and faltering," said Pervez Hoodbhoy, a professor at Islamabad's Quaid-e-Azam University and one of Pakistan's leading intellectuals. "A Taliban victory will enslave our women, destroy Pakistan's rich historical and cultural heritage, make education and science impossible, and make the lives of its citizens impossibly difficult. Some are already contemplating an exodus." Pakistan today stands on a knife-edge, threatened with anarchy. The desperate deal signed with the Taliban in Swat looks set to fall apart. The result will almost certainly be violence. An army convoy heading into Swat on Saturday morning was stopped by the Taliban and forced to turn back, in a naked display of their power. They seem to have been only emboldened by the peace agreement. Many believe that a bloody military operation now looks inevitable, For those in areas falling under Taliban control, their harsh rule is terrifying. An SOS text message sent out on Friday by a terrified local resident, in an area of Swat called Bahrain, says that the Taliban have established total control. Asking not be named for fear of reprisal, he said that they have set up check posts at the entrance to Bahrain, from where they kidnap those they want, including young women. "They've even warned the local schools to close the girl classes or face dire consequences. Yet the government says its writ is in Swat." Another Swat resident said: "Every day I see armed Taliban move around freely. At the time of prayer, if they see anyone in his shop or walking about, they whip him with a stick." The Pakistani Taliban, a copy of the Afghan extremist movement, have long controlled the tribal area along the Afghan border, which is a sanctuary for militants, including al-Qaeda. But it is their march into the heart of the country that has horrified ordinary Pakistanis, and the wider world. And the threat comes not just from the Taliban to the west. Islamic extremists, who are not part of the Taliban, are already entrenched in Islamabad and across the Punjab, the most populous province, seemingly ready to surface when their moment comes. Islamabad's defences are being hurriedly fortified, with paramilitary troops stationed on the Margalla Hills, which overlook the city from the West. In the capital, there are thousands of followers of the radical Red Mosque, where there are now open calls for Islamic revolution at the weekly Friday prayers. "The Taliban will not stop at Swat. They will come towards Islamabad," said Hasan Askari Rizvi, a military analyst based in Lahore. "If the army is to take action against them, it is going to be a really bloody battle. And then civil government will be knocked out." "Extremist groups based in Islamabad will move from within and they (Taliban) will build pressure from outside." The footage Pakistanis have been watching shows them what they could expect. A local journalist was invited to witness the execution, who filmed it with his mobile phone for a Pakistani channel, Dawn News. The Sunday Telegraph is showing the footage in the West for the first time. There were no names for the two victims. "Using the media is part of their (the Taliban's) psychological warfare," said Imtiaz Gul, chairman of Centre for Research and Security Studies, an independent think tank in Islamabad. "This way, they inject fear into the minds of people who might oppose them, keeping the majority silent." After the couple were shot, the family were told to take their bodies away for burial. The punishment was administered by a local group of the Pakistani Taliban linked to warlord Baitullah Mehsud. for SOURCE: Click here |
By William Langley 25 Apr 2009 Eight years ago, when Dan Brown completed The Da Vinci Code, he had the advantage of surprise. One of the surprises was that 80 million people would get past an opening paragraph that began: "Renowned curator Jacques Saunière staggered through the vaulted archway of the museum's Grand Gallery. He lunged for the nearest painting he could see, a Caravaggio. Grabbing the gilded frame, the 76-year-old man heaved the masterpiece toward himself until it tore from the wall and Saunière collapsed backward in a heap beneath the canvas." Critics dumped the requisite helpings of odium on Dan's prose, but the real surprise was that a 480-page novel largely fashioned from early Catholic obscurantism would cause such turmoil within the Church. This time, the Vatican is ready. Brown's long-awaited follow-up, The Lost Symbol, is to be released in September. Breaking the news last week, the 44-year-old author took care to give little away, but – as was perhaps to be expected with a book seen by the embattled publishing industry as its own global stimulus programme – details of the plot have leaked. Dan Brown is no stranger to critical odium The novel is known to dwell on the religious roots of Freemasonry, and to once again feature Robert Langdon, the hero of The Da Vinci Code. It is Langdon who says things like: "I've got to get to a library… fast!" A tweed-favouring professor of symbology at Harvard University, he has an eidetic memory that allows him to digest ancient squiggles by the wall-load, and a fearless streak of iconoclasm which convinces him that the Catholic Church has been engaged in "the biggest cover-up of all time". Even before last week's announcement, the Vatican was preparing extensive anti-Brown contingency measures. Angels and Demons, the Ron Howard-directed film version of an earlier Brown novel, hits the big screen next month. It tells of a plot by the Illuminati, a secular secret society, supposedly defunct since the 18th century, to blow up the Holy See using anti-matter stolen from the CERN high-energy physics centre in Switzerland. Gianni Gennari, a prominent theologian and columnist with the Vatican newspaper Avvenire, has called upon Catholics to boycott the movie, depicting it as part of a conspiracy to insult and ridicule the Church. The film-makers were also refused permission to use locations controlled by the Diocese of Rome. Father Marco Fibbi, a spokesman for the Church says: "Normally, we would read the script, but in this case the name 'Dan Brown' was enough." All of which is likely to be much appreciated by Dan. For years, he was a nobody; a mild-mannered, piano-playing schoolteacher's son from the granite hills of New Hampshire, who wanted to become a pop singer, preferably in the Barry Manilow mould. He moved to Los Angeles and in the early 1990s released a debut CD that featured 976-LOVE, a ballad about phone intimacy, which was not the hit he had hoped for. "The world isn't ready for a pale, balding geek shaking his booty on MTV," he admitted. Dispirited, he found consolation in the shape of Blythe Newton Brown, an attractive blonde music industry executive, 12 years his senior, who took him under her wing – or, as many have subsequently come to see it, her thumb. From the time of their first meeting, his prospects began to improve. Blythe became his manager, and while in public she would talk him up as the "new Billy Joel", "the new Prince" or "the new Paul Simon", she had the sense to see that such actual talents as he had might lie elsewhere. As a boy, Dan had been obsessed with puzzles, riddles and codes. His parents would lay treasure trails around the house for their three children, and he would always be the first to solve them. Magic tricks and sleight of hand fascinated him. One day he told Blythe about an art lecture he had attended as a post-graduate in Spain. The subject had been Leonardo da Vinci's 15th-century mural of the Last Supper, and it seemed that there were disguised references, messages, possibly clues in the painting that had continued to intrigue him. Twenty years later, his curiosity would shape the plot of The Da Vinci Code. It didn't take Blythe long to realise that Dan, whom she married in 1995, wasn't going to make it even as the new Tiny Tim, and when he expressed an interest in writing, she encouraged him to indulge his love of intricate detail. A handful of books followed, none particularly successful. Salman Rushdie has called The Da Vinci Code "a book so bad that it makes bad books look good", while the American grammarian Mark Lieberman has labelled Brown "one of the worst prose stylists in the history of literature". One leading critic wrote: "There has been much debate over Dan Brown's novel, but no question has been more contentious than this: 'If a person of sound mind begins reading it at 10 o'clock, at what time will he or she realise that it is unmitigated junk?' " Among novelists who take a modest pride in their writing, there is lingering disbelief and resentment that Brown's clunking dialogue and household-appliance-manual narratives should have brought him such fame and riches. Yet the success didn't come easily. Once the Browns – now effectively operating as a team – settled on the outline of The Da Vinci Code, the research operation began. They spent thousands of hours poring over books and documents in Rome, Paris and Washington. Tentatively at first, and then with more confidence, they constructed a quasi-factual, almost plausible framework for a work of outrageous fiction. The discipline extended into the writing regime, which Dan has described as "tough and painful." He starts work each day at 4am. "Otherwise I feel like I'm missing my most productive hours. I keep an hourglass on my desk and every hour I stop to do push-ups, sit-ups and stretches." If this doesn't sound much like the gin-guzzling, feud-settling writerly life of, say, Hemingway and Fitzgerald in A Moveable Feast, Dan is unlikely to mind. His fortune is now estimated at more than $200 million dollars, and he and Blythe – they have no children – live on a large, guarded estate in his native New Hampshire. The forthcoming book, with an advance print order approaching five million copies, will add handsomely to his fortune. The money hasn't greatly changed him. Jason Kaufman, his friend and editor, says: "He is the same person he was before… he is remarkably level-headed about his life." But it isn't the same life. Brown probably thought music was a tough business until he ran into theology. At public appearances he has been abused by militant Catholics, who accuse him of blasphemy and the exploitation of their faith. The impression lingers everywhere that his success – however extravagant – will not endure, and that The Da Vinci Code will prove to be one of those flukes of pop-cultural preference that has no meaning or basis. The countdown to The Lost Symbol has begun, and this time it isn't just the critics who are ready and waiting for Dan Brown, but the Vatican, too. for SOURCE: Click here |

Governor denies cult link Tuesday, 4 March 2008 The governor of a south east Nigerian state has denied being involved in a secret ritual that was filmed and uploaded onto the internet. Theodore Orji of Abia state told the BBC the film was a fake. The film features a man who strongly resembles the governor, crouching in front of a shrine in shackles dressed only in his Y-fronts. The shrine is believed to be one in Anambra state that has been linked to scores of murders. The 31-second clip was uploaded onto the internet by saharareporters.com, a group of Nigerian "citizen journalists". Another man standing behind the one in Y-fronts brandishes a chicken and an egg. It is not clear what exactly is going on in the clip, which has no sound, but it seems the man resembling the governor is forced to symbolically lay an egg. Okija Shrine It is not clear what is going on in the picture Found in 2004 after a tip off Located in Okija Anambra state The shrine was lined with coffins 33 bodies were discovered Bodies were missing parts 30 arrests were made, nobody was charged 'Christian' Many Nigerians hold on to their traditional beliefs in addition to being Muslim or Christian. But Mr Orji told the BBC's Network Africa programme he was not a member of a secret cult. "I am a Christian by birth, my father owns a church. I cannot go to my father's church and be a member of a cult," he said. "You can do anything with a computer these days," he added. He said the accusations were part of a plot to run him out of politics. Mr Orji won his election in Abia state with 82% of the vote, but he was in jail at the time. He was accused of complicity with his boss, former governor Orji Kalu, who is now facing corruption charges. Last month an election tribunal overturned Mr Orji's election, saying he had not resigned his post as required before the poll. But he remains governor pending an appeal. "They are trying to heap all the crimes of the world upon my head," Mr Orji said. 'Human sacrifice' In 2004, 33 bodies were discovered at a shrine in Okija, Anambra state. Many were missing body parts, hands heads and genitals, believed to have been used in rituals. 30 men were arrested, but nobody was tried. The police said they suspected the victims had been murdered, but the arrested men said the bodies had been brought to the shrine by their families. They claimed the men had died in accidents, killed by spirits after breaking agreements made at the shrine. Mr Orji told the BBC shrines were common all over Nigeria "It is where people go to settle scores and land disputes," he said. It is not the first time a politician has been filmed in this way. In 2003 Anambra governor Chris Ngige was filmed participating in a shrine ritual. He did not deny the charges and said he had gone along with the ritual because he was being blackmailed, but had no intention of sticking to the deal. SOURCE: Click here |
