Adeboye endows a N50m professorial chair at Unilag Written by Sam Eyoboka Saturday, 06 June 2009 IT was ecstacy at the Tafawa Balewa Square last Sunday when as part of its corporate social responsibility, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye handed a cheque of N50 million to the endow a professorial chair at the University of Lagos. Speaking in a brief ceremony before his main message to mark the grand finale of the second annual RCCG Apapa Family Reunion, the pastor hinted that the gesture is one in a series of such gestures in the nation’s tertiary institutions in the country. Dressed in a milk coloured stripped French suit, the erstwhile mathematics teacher told the mammoth crowd of worshippers that he was highly indepted to the University of Lagos for several reasons. Speaking before the presentation of the cheque to representatives of the vice chancellor at the spiritual gathering, Pastor Adeboye said: “University of Lagos means a lot to me. By the grace of God I am the first MSc graduate of the Department of Mathematics.” Continuing amidst huge applause from the crowd of worshippers, he said: “Also, by the grace of God I am the first Ph.D Mathematics of that school. It was at the University of Lagos that I started my teaching career in the university. “But, far far more important than that, it was while I was at the University of Lagos that I got born again. So, I owe a lot to the university. When the idea of establishing professorial chairs came up, I said we would start with the University of Lagos. “So, could you please help me to pass this the vice chancellor. Inside it is a cheque for N50 million,” he added while handing over a white envelope to the representative of the VC. In response, the ecstatic representative of the vice chancellor, Mrs. A.B. Awere said amidst tears of joy: “To the glory of the Lord, we are here, in the presence of our God and the saints. Daddy, I just want to appreciate what the Lord is doing in your life, in the life of Mummy and in this ministry. We are amazed and we thank you sir, for this gift. By the grace of God, the University of Lagos will continue to excel. The Lord will uphold you. He will reward you and promote you and your ministry. He will guide you. You will be like the tree planted by the rivers of water, bringing forth your fruit in due season. You will not wither. Whatever you lay hand on will prosper. The purpose of God in your life and in your ministry will be fulfilled in the name of Jesus. Our colleagues here, said we should sing a song to the glory of God. We may not sing very well, “To God be the glory, great things He had done . . . ” Pastor Adeboye, during his sermon for the day, narrated an incident that took place at the University of Lagos that lead to his admission to the school to complete his academic pursuit after the Nigerian Civil War truncated his dream at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. . . . I’m stronger now than when I was 50 years old GENERAL Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG, Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye, 67, may soon attract some criticisms from fellow scientists when he declared last Sunday that he is stronger now than what he was 17 years ago. Scientists all over the world, an elite group that Pastor Adeboye belongs, tend to agree that as a man grows older, he becomes weaker and weaker, but the revered man of God, who is currently leading other eminent Nigerians on the Vanguard/Silverbird Five Greatest Living Legends, told a crowd of worshippers at the Tafawa Balewa Square last Sunday that he is stronger now than he was when he was 50 years old. There is a popular saying that women and wine get better with age. But do men also get stronger with age? According to medical research, from birth all the way to death, our bodies are constantly changing. “Let’s take a look at what happens as we age. When you have a normally functioning pituitary gland, human growth hormone (HGH) contributes to these processes. “When man gets to his 30s and early 40s, the level of HGH (Human Growth Hormone) in our bodies begins to decline. Our metabolism slows, causing the “middle-aged spread” that so many people try to avoid. Between the ages of 40 and 65, we see our muscle strength decline, along with our vision and hearing. Our late 50s to early 60s may bring some cognitive decay as well. “Moving into our late 60s and beyond, our skin becomes less elastic. Our joints and bones may become brittle. Medical conditions like heart disease or cancer become more likely as our bodies are unable to repair themselves the way they used to. At this point, the levels of HGH in our bodies are only one-fifth or less of what they were during youth,” says the research. *The “Science” of mankind is what men “observe”, but it is only true science if it lines up with the Word of God. God has designed this world to “confound the wisdom of the wise” - “that no flesh should glory in His presence”, I Corinthians 1:19-29. Man can write down what they observe perfectly correct, and continually come to the wrong conclusions. In Psalm 119:97-100, David said: “O how love I thy law! it (is) my meditation all the day. Thou through thy commandments hast made me wiser than mine enemies: for they (are) ever with me. I have more understanding than all my teachers: for thy testimonies (are) my meditation. I understand more than the ancients, because I keep thy precepts. for SOURCE: Click here |
Lagos State governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, on Friday cleared the air on the misrepresentations in the purported imposition of tax on religious organisations in the state, saying there was no intention by the State Government to tax churches in the state. Governor Fashola, who made the clarification while fielding questions from newsmen at a World Press Conference to mark his second year in office at the Banquet Hall of the Lagos House, explained that the State Government only sought obedience to an already existing federal law that religious leaders should pay tax from the personal income they earn from their activities. “The point here is that religious leaders are not different from you and me. If they earn income from that activity, it is only proper that they remit to the commonwealth, to the common pool and to the common developmental resources from which they benefit”. Explaining further, the Governor said, “they use the roads, their children use the schools, their wives use the markets, they use water, they enjoy the benefits of the security that we provide”, adding that people should not get emotional about the issue. Acknowledging that the Constitution exempted churches from taxation, the governor pointed out that the courts has ruled at a time that if a church has property which it rents out and from which it earns income, it should pay tax from such earnins, adding “I also want to make the point clearly, we did not make the law. It is a Federal Government law, but it is a law that we are empowered to implement just like the Income Tax Law.” Debunking the allegation that the plan was targeted at a particular religion, Governor Fashola declared, “I cannot even successfully do it. Here I am, a Muslim, my father is a Muslim, my mother is Anglican, my wife is Catholic and my siblings are of the pentecostal faith”, adding that the issue must be separated from sentiment and emotion. Advising any aggrieved person to seek redress formally through the courts, Governor Fashola, however, instructed the agencies of government responsible for implementing the law to be civil and humane. “We will not always be in the places when the law is being implemented. We urge our officers to act in the most civil and humane manner to ensure that people comply”, he advised. for SOURCE: Click here |

Tree surgeon career got Ade out of the woods Facing unemployment for the first time in his life, after 26 solid years as a tiler, Adrian Ross didn’t know where to turn. The building trade was dying around him and he had a young family to provide for. “There was nothing out there and I felt completely useless.” But just five months later the 42-year-old, has turned it all around. Despite never having climbed a tree in his life and certainly having no ambitions in that line, he has a job with a future as a trainee tree surgeon. In these early days of training (he started in April), Adrian’s feet are still firmly on the ground, shredding branches and boughs while his more experienced colleagues head aloft. “It’s a noisy business,” he says. But in the next year, Adrian, from near Ipswich, Suffolk, will learn to master a chainsaw and the art of climbing. He’ll also gain skills and internationally-recognised qualifications. “I’ve already done a bit of climbing – some in a harness and some in a cherry picker up to 60ft. It’s strange being so high up looking across flat Suffolk but great, too. I can see myself coming to love it.” Adrian’s never had a passion for trees although he’s rapidly coming to respect them – especially the grand old ones. “There’s a lot to learn and I have to be honest and say that, at my age, I find it hard sometimes. At the moment I’m learning tree recognition – the difference between a silver birch and a beech. It’s tricky.” But Adrian’s gradually regaining his self-confidence after losing his job at Christmas. “The actual getting up to go to work and earning a living has brought that back,” he says. His self-esteem was almost at zero when Adrian had to accept he could no longer work as a tiler. “From the day I left school and did my apprenticeship I had always worked as a sub-contractor on projects round the world and nearer home.” Last year, he noticed it was getting harder to find work. “The companies stopped hiring. Just before Christmas I’d made a load of calls and every one said no. “I finally admitted defeat.” At first he thought about going out on his own but felt it was too risky. “We have two young sons, Samuel, five, and Louis, 18 months, and a mortgage. I need a steady income.” So for the first time in his adult life Adrian was out of work. “I had to draw Jobseeker’s Allowance for two soul-destroying months. As a tiler I’d always earned a fair amount but there I was on £50 a week.” Even the process of looking for work was hard. “It’s all done on computers. Every job I searched for in the building trade was gone – the industry had died.” But a friend of Adrian’s wife Sharon worked for a local company BTS (www.btsgroupuk.com) which specialises in arboriculture – the care of trees. Employing some 300 staff, BTS operates and manage tree teams, linesmen and teams in the construction and maintenance of overhead power lines. “I knew of them but had never given it a thought. I got in touch.” Seeing Adrian’s determination to work, and ignoring the fact that he was older than the average trainee, they hired him. “They could see I was serious and wouldn’t give up easily.” Adrian still can’t quite believe what he’s doing. “I find it very odd to be learning a new profession. But the guys and the training are fantastic, and make it much easier. So far, I’ve been lucky with the weather – I’m enjoying all the fresh air.” One downside, however, is the cut in salary. “I had it good for all those years and yes, I’ve had to take a big pay cut. But I feel lucky not to be facing the uncertainty of being self-employed in a dead industry.” / For information on BTS or retraining as a tree surgeon or arboriculturist, visit the careers section at www.btsgroupuk.com ADRIAN’S TIPS FOR retraining Be prepared to look at anything – you don’t know how you’ll find it until you’ve tried. Don’t be afraid of new things. With proper training you’ll be fine. Accept that your confidence will take a knock but try to do any work at all just to keep going. Don’t give up searching. Ask everyone you know for ideas. Who knows where the answer lies? for SOURCE: Click here |
A 50K BODY - BUT I'M STILL NOT HAPPY She's had every bit of her nip/tucked, but Katie Perks, 30, still wants more "Studying the woman's face in an old photo, I'm staggered by how old she looks. Fat face, piggy eyes, a shelf of a bust and a monstrous belly. Not quite ugly, but about as far from attractive as you can go. Sound harsh? It does, but I can be that critical because the woman I'm talking about is me. Well, the old me. Four years ago I was a whopping size 26, and had the face, body and mindset of a woman three times my age. Since then, I have had cosmetic surgery totalling almost £50,000, to transform me from an ugly duckling into a swan. And I'm not done yet - later this year I'll have a full body lift, and will finally have the figure I've craved all these years. All my life I'd been fat, verging on obese. In shops, sales assistants didn't say I was too fat for their clothes, but they didn't have to. The disgust on their faces was plain to see. I'd get people doing double takes in the street to gawp at my size and make snide comments. I didn't feel accepted anywhere. And so, after years of hating my shape - and comfort eating to cope with my self-loathing - I'm now determined to make myself look good all over. No matter what it takes or costs. My weight problem dated back to when my parents divorced. I was just five years old and remember turning to food for comfort. Age 10, 7 1/2 stone or 47kg I gorged on crisps and chocolate. I'd eat till I felt sick, but it didn't stop me. By the age of 15 I was a size 16 and weighed 14st. Desperately unhappy, I went off the rails, got in with the wrong crowd and started drinking and smoking. Boys weren't an issue. I mean, nobody in their right mind fancied me I was just their fat friend, someone to have a laugh with. I longed to have a tiny waist and slim thighs, but who was I kidding? I was known as Big Kate. As my self-esteem continued to nosedive, my parents couldn't cope, so I ended up in care. Any self-worth I had left soon disappeared, and I left school at 16 with no qualifications and weighing 17st. I never thought I could do anything, so I drifted from factory job to factory job. Home was a grubby bedsit in a hostel. I still drank too much - it was the only way to block out my sorry excuse for a life. Aged 19, I hit rock bottom. I realised if I didn't change my life I would die this way - fat and unhappy. I contacted social services and started having counselling. Slowly I realised that deep down I was a good person. I got help with some interviews and landed a job at a supermarket near my home in Shifnal, Shropshire. And it was there I met Andy Perks. He was kind, gentle, funny, and he seemed to see the real me, not the fat blob I'd become. And when, 18 months later, he asked me to marry him, I didn't hesitate. We both said we wanted to try for a baby, but I knew I was too heavy so I started an extreme diet. I'd eat nothing one day, then binge the next. In just over a year, I lost enough weight to fit into a size-18 wedding dress. Within a year I'd fallen pregnant, but after denying myself for so long, I took advantage of eating for two. By the time I gave birth to Zoe in 2005, I weighed 19st and was a size 26 - bigger than I'd ever been. Katie with hubby Andy Age 22, 18 1/2 stone or 117.48kg I stared in the mirror at the woman I'd become, and tears rolled down my fat cheeks. 'How can Andy love this?' I thought, staring at my 46F bust and sagging belly. But I shook my dark thoughts away and dedicated myself to being a good mum. Later that year, I read about the Cambridge Diet, and I decided I had nothing to lose - except weight. Within two weeks I was 1st lighter. From then on I was determined to slim down and stay that way. Sticking rigidly to the weight-loss plan, I lost 9st in as many months. At just 9st and a size 10, I was literally less than half the woman I used to be. And my life changed beyond all recognition. I had so much more energy, I could fit in to almost anything I picked up in the trendy shops and I could run around after Zoe without my thighs chafing together. But it wasn't long before the euphoria of losing the weight waned, only to be replaced by another anxiety. I was slim - but I still had the skin of a fat person. My boobs were only an A cup, but they drooped almost to my waist. My belly had a huge overhang of skin that I had to tuck into my pants. I'd read enough to know that I needed a boob job and a tummy tuck. When I told Andy, 34, he said I didn't need it, but if it would make me happy, that he'd support me. By now I worked as a counsellor for the diet plan I'd used, so I decided to save up for the two ops. Then, one night when I was using the internet, I stumbled across an advert for Living's Extreme Makeover TV show. The producers were looking for people to have transformations - I applied and was accepted. I had consultations with the surgeons and they went though the list of procedures that they felt would give me the perfect body. They recommended I have a tummy tuck, breast implants and an uplift, a lower facelift and an arm lift, all in one operation. And the really good part? It would be free. As I was admitted to theatre for the surgery I remembered feeling so scared. What if something went wrong? But I'd come too far to back out. The surgery lasted eight hours and the recovery was painful. I was shocked by the scars. But dressed, I looked amazing. I was also given hair extensions and teeth veneers. When my new look was revealed to friends and family, they were stunned. Andy's face was a picture! I looked sexy and 20 years younger. 'You're still the same in there though,' he said, putting his hand over my heart. But I was treated like a different person. Now I was slim, men held doors open for me and openly flirted. Other attractive women would eye me up and down when I was out shopping - but not with disgust, with envy. And I admit, I liked it. But my priority was being a good mum, wife and getting on my with my life. Six months later, Andy and I tried for another baby - and Polly was born in January 2008. This time I'd been sensible with my diet and I lost the baby weight I gained. Although my body looked good - it needed a little fine-tuning. So I decided to have a thigh lift and a second breast uplift. I'd saved the £12,000 I needed and in July 2008 I went in for the surgery. Some people will think I'm mad, but I don't care. Andy loves me - each time I have surgery it's like he gets a brand new wife! There are areas of my body that still need to be changed though - my back has loose skin on it, and my tummy could be flatter. My belly button needs to be repositioned, too. So I'm going to have one final op in December - a body lift. I'll be pretty much cut in half so all the excess skin can be trimmed away around my tummy. After years of trying, I'll finally have my dream body. Some people think I'm addicted to surgery, but I'm not. I just want to be the best I can. What's wrong with that?" Andy says: "I've always loved Katie regardless of how she looked. She worked hard to lose weight and if she wants to change her body to fit the new her, I support her all the way. I always felt proud to be her husband, but now even more so. She's sexy with her new body, but I fell in love with her smile - and that hasn't changed." Age 27, 8 1/2 stone or 53.97kg: 'I was slim but had the skin of a fat person' WHAT KATIE'S HAD DONE Tummy tuck £6,700 Arm lift £5,500 Facelift £5,700 Breast implants & uplift £7,500 Veneers £12,000 Thigh lift & 2nd breast uplift £12,000 TOTAL: £49,400 for SOURCE: Click here . . . everyone to their own hmm? |

@^ Unbe_weave_able? . . . KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Other than having a bit of a headache, a Kansas City woman was uninjured after a bullet fired at her ended up tangled in her hair weave. Police said Briana Bond, 20, was in a convenience store parking lot late Wednesday when a man flagged her down and told her that her ex-boyfriend still loved her. She replied, "Well I don't love him," then heard gunshots. She said she looked behind the vehicle and saw her ex-boyfriend firing a handgun at her. "On my way out I saw him walking up the sidewalk, and he just started shooting, four shots, and one of them hit the back of my head, and luckily it didn't go through because my wig cap stopped it," Bond said. She stomped her accelerator and fled, then turned into another parking lot and called police. She told officers she recently had ended an eight-month relationship with the suspect. Police arrested the ex-boyfriend and his friend in a car. [flash=425,345]http:///kt7pfk[/flash] "I invested a lot of money into this wig, and it saved my life," Bond said. Eleven people have gone on trial in Burundi accused over the killing of albinos and the suspected sale of their limbs to witch doctors. Eight of the defendants are charged with the murder of a young girl and man in March this year. The trial is being held in the central African country's eastern Ruyigi province, where most of the killings took place. Nicodeme Gahimbare, prosecuting, said: "There are four categories of people involved in trafficking albino organs: the clients who are in Tanzania, the go-betweens, the killers and the poor albinos, who are the victims. "Those who are here in front of us are the executioners who committed these crimes, convinced they would earn 600m Burundian francs (£309,000) and become rich - but all they got was promises," he added. Police believe albino body parts have been smuggled across the border into Tanzania to practice black magic. 'Men Sold Albinos' Limbs To Witch Doctors' Around 20 albinos, including children, attended the hearing at which the defendants pleaded not guilty. At least 12 albinos have been murdered and mutilated in Burundi in the six months up to March this year. In neighbouring Tanzania, more than 40 albinos have been killed since late 2007. Albinism is a congenital lack of the melanin pigment in the skin, eyes and hair which protects against the sun's ultraviolet rays. for SOURCE: Click here |
Book of Psalms deflects bullet, saves pastor An Argentine evangelical pastor was born again after a book of Psalms he was holding deflected a bullet fired at close range, officials in the western province of Mendoza said. Mauricio Zanes Condori, 38, was trying to talk two thieves out of robbing his church, located in the town of Rodeo del Medio, about 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) west of Buenos Aires, local judicial authorities reported. One of the thieves aimed his handgun at Zanes Condori's chest and fired at a distance of two meters (about seven feet). The criminals immediately fled, and churchgoers who were watching in horror as the event unfolded, called for an ambulance. But the bullet hit the book of Psalms that Zanes Condori was holding to his chest. A medic who arrived at the scene said the book slowed down the bullet and deflected its trajectory, so in the end it only scratched Zanes Condori's chest. The pastor said God had saved his life The official report said that a Bible had stopped the bullet, but Zanes Condori later clarified that it was a book of Psalms "That leads me to believe in a God that takes care of me," Zanes Condor told the online publication, Los Andes. for SOURCE: Click here |
More than 100 "satan-worshippers" have reportedly been seized in a raid on a concert in the southern Iranian city of Shiraz. The people in custody had been drinking alcohol and "sucking blood", according to the Jam-e Jam newspaper. "One hundred and four members of a satan-worshipping group were arrested at a party and immoral concert in Shiraz," local Revolutionary Guards chief Abbas Hamidi was quoted as saying. "The session was held in a garden, and the satanist ceremony was broadcast live to the world via the internet," he said. The arrests were made by members of the Islamist basij militia linked to the Guards. "These people drank alcohol, hurt themselves and sucked blood," Mr Hamidi said. Iranian authorities sometimes link hard rock and heavy metal music and their icons with Satan worship. Jam-e Jam carried pictures of drum sets and amplifiers seized in the raid and a group of young men photographed after the arrest sitting on the floor. It said some of the detainees sported tattoos and body art resembling the wings of birds and car emblems. During the past two years, Iranian police and security officials have warned against the emergence of "satanist" cults accused of corrupting the young. There has been a tough nationwide crackdown on "unIslamic" attire and behaviour. In September 2008, a senior police chief said members of the so-called cults would wear "broken-cross and skeleton necklaces and rings, drink alcohol and dance in their ceremonies." "They believe they should defy religions, especially Islam, do as they want and drag the world into anarchy," he claimed. for SOURCE: Click here |
Church of Scientology on trial in France Dorothee Moisan The Church of Scientology and six of its French leaders went on trial on Monday on charges of organised fraud that could lead to an outright ban on the organisation in France. Known for its Hollywood celebrity followers Tom Cruise and John Travolta, the group is in the dock in Paris for the second time in six years, although French courts have prosecuted several individual Scientologists since 1978. The court is hearing a complaint from two women, one of whom alleges she was manipulated into handing over 20,000 euros (28,000 dollars) for costly Scientology products, such as an "electrometer" to measure mental energy. She says she was approached in a Paris street by a Scientologist in late 1998 who offered a free personality test, at a time when she was feeling psychologically fragile. After being told that her test results were poor, the woman was sold a series of life-improvement courses, vitamins and other products that she could ill afford, landing her in debt. The second complainant alleges she was forced by her Scientologist employer to undergo testing and enroll in courses in 1998. When she resisted, she was fired. Originally, there were four complainants, but two have since withdrawn. The plaintiffs' lawyers argue that Scientology resorts to harassment and pressure to rein in victims who show signs of vulnerability. The Scientology Celebrity Centre in Paris, its director Alain Rosenberg and five other top officials are accused of preying on fragile followers "with the goal of seizing their fortune by exerting a psychological hold." Although seven people were charged, one defendant has since died. The group's spokeswoman in France rejected the accusations, insisting that Scientology was a legitimate religion whose members faced persecution. "This is a trial for heresy," said Daniele Gounord, adding that the Church was being "hounded" in French courts because it advocated new ideas. The court's presiding judge Sophie-Helene Chateau insisted that "it is not up to the courts to decide on an issue of society," referring to the movement's status in France, where officials treat it as a sect. Some of the Scientologists are also charged with illegally supplying pharmaceutical products after plaintiffs said they were given vitamins and concoctions to improve their mental state. If convicted of organised fraud as a group, the defendants face a maximum sentence of seven years in jail and a fine of one million euros (1.4 million dollars). https://d.yimg.com/i/ng/ne/afp/20090525/19/1861999822-church-scientology-trial-france.jpg Books in the window of the Scientology Celebrity Centre in Paris Should French prosecutors win a conviction, the movement's French structures, the Scientology Celebrity Centre and an associated bookshop in Paris, could be shut down for failing to meet their responsibilities as legal entities. However, even if the court rules in favour of the plaintiffs and decides to impose a ban, the Church of Scientology has the right to appeal and the legal wrangling could continue for years. Founded in the United States in 1954 by science-fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard, the Church of Scientology is officially recognised as a religion there for tax purposes. Politicians in some European countries including France, Germany, Greece and Russia have accused the movement of exploiting its members financially. There are believed to be several thousand Scientology followers in France -- the movement claims 45,000 among a worldwide membership of 12 million -- but the state does not recognise it as a religion. The trial is scheduled to continue until June 17 and a ruling is not expected until some time later. for SOURCE: Click here |

Teen Robs Shop With Banana Then Eats Evidence A teenager was caught trying to rob a store with a banana - then ate the makeshift weapon to destroy the evidence. The 17-year-old is currently in the county jail charged with attempted armed robbery. The bizarre drama began when Szwalla entered the 109 Biz Center in Winston-Salem with a banana under his shirt. The hapless thief told staff in the internet cafe that he had a gun and demanded cash, according to local reports. Owner Bobby Ray Mabe said he and a customer jumped on to Szwalla, pinning him into a chair before deputies arrived. But while they waited for police, Mabe says the teen stuffed the banana into his mouth and swallowed it. When deputies arrived they took pictures of the banana peel instead. Forsyth County Sheriff's office spokesman Major Brad Stanley said police joked about charging Szwalla with destroying evidence. "If he had had a gun he would've shot me," Mabe said yesterday. "But he had a banana," he added. Szwalla faces a charge of attempted armed robbery. Jail officials said he does not have an lawyer. Szwalla is in the Forsyth County Jail, with bond set at £35,000 SOURCE: Click here |
