Hello Guys. I guess everyone has settled in ? For those still trying to getting admission and funding, don't give up. Those of us who have benefited from here will do our best in helping others too.

By the way,I did change my school to Stanford. Remember the guy I was always mailing at Stanford? He was able to get funding for me as one of his prospective students left for Cambridge in the UK. So I'm super elated and glad. Though I wasted some money processing stuff to go to TAMU, I'm optimistic going to Stanford is worth it.

Congratulations Quoran. This news is absolutely amazing. I am so elated. Enjoy Stanford.

ME: the research in energy storage and conversion at Tufts closely aligns with my research interest.

VO: what will study?
ME: PhD in Mechanical Engineering.

VO: what's your second major? (She corrected her self on looking at my I-20)

VO: how will you fund your studies?
ME: I got a full tuition waiver + (at this point she was no longer interested in what o was about to say again) RA which comes...(I stopped talk since she wasn't even interested again).

VO: can I see a letter from the school showing this funding?
ME: gave her my admission letter.

VO: what do you do presently?

The word on the street is stay away from all these supposed benevolent offers of a cheap GRE/SAT/TOEFL price.

I can remember this starting as an offer of help to some test-takers. Later, somehow it has grown to a full fledged business. The ironic part is I can't wrap my head how someone can afford to pay such a very low price for these exams. If it stinks like fraud, it is fraudulent. angry angry angry

To all those supporting them, your test scores might be okay right now. How about months from now? Scores can be cancelled at anytime. And you would need to pay again. Please, don't be shortsighted. I am saying this for newbies.

please I am a graduate of pure and applied chemistry
cgpa:4.5/5.0
TOEFL:80
GRE:v:152, q:155, aw:2
please which schools can I apply for in USA or Canada

I am so optimistic for you right now; I mean you are a chemistry major with a good profile. So you have a great chance of getting a fully funded MSc or PhD in the USA. To add to drhammed's advice, mail professors whose research interest is similar to yours as quickly as you can. In your mail, mention that you are seeking for a research position in their lab. Please go through this thread to see samples of such emails. Moreover, check out the University of Utah and Wayne State University too.

Also, if you graduated from a public university in Nigeria, please apply for the Opportunity Fund Program of EducationUSA. The deadline is June 30th. All the best.

Please I need help from people that have experience this before. I went for my F1 Visa interview today at Abuja Consulate. Everything went well, but I was placed on Administrative processing, the VO said he has to check to verify my bank statement. My questions are:

1. How long will this process take?
2. The ending balance on the account as at 30th may is 8M. But as at today is 99k (is a current account) will he check the balance or is just the authenticity they are checking for?
3. In what means are they going to reach me after checking?

Please help a brother. He kept my passport, I-20 and my bank statement.
Big mistake. That money should have remained there. The VOs are not stupid.

I thought I would post this 12 days ago but as God would have it, I could not until now. I have been on 'Administrative Processing' from the day I had my interview (May 30) until today that my visa was finally issued. I interviewed at Abuja and the interview goes thus:

VO: Good morning
Me: Good morning and how has been work?
VO: Fine thanks.
VO: Pass me your passport and I-20
Me: I passed them
* the VO looked at my I-20 for like 30 secs
VO: So you are going to the University of Arkansas
Me: Yes, for my PhD in Cell and Molecular Biology
VO: Nods, so tell me about the program at Uni of Arkansas
Me: The program is for five years and I will be required to take 42 credits hour in total, 18 for dissertation research and 24 for coursework. A minimum GPA of 3.0 must be maintained every semester * (VO cuts in)
VO: how old are you?
Me: 2_ years old
VO: Are you married?
Me: No I am not
VO: Any kid?
Me: No ma
VO: Do you have any postgraduate degree
Me: No
VO: So you are going straight from BSc to PhD
Me: Exactly
VO: When did you finish your BSc
Me: I graduated in 2015 from Obafemi Awolowo University with a first class degree in** she cuts in (I was trying to sell myself here to provide 'reasons' for the BS to PhD route)
VO: Really?
Me: Yes really
VO: Do you have anything to support that claim?
Me: Yes, I passed both my transcript and certificate.
** she looked at my transcript (a student copy but stamped by the registrar) placed on top my certificate. I think the transcript looked somehow to her (If I had known, I would have placed the certificate on top or better still just BSc certificate)
VO: Okay, so what have you been doing?
Me: I have been working as a research assistant at Obafemi Awolowo University * she cuts in
VO: Alright, I will hold on to your passport, I-20 and your certificates. I will verify your certificates and we will get back to you.
Me: I was then waiting for white paper but she did not pass any. I then asked, 'ma, how about my white paper'. She looked at me with a big grin (looked sarcastic though). I then smiled and zoomed off before she changes the story.

Thank you to everyone that contributes to this platform. Even though I hardly comment, I visit often to learn from folks with wealth of knowledge.
Congratulations Jumybecks.

Sassandra:
ASK YOURSELF ONE SIMPLE QUESTION; Why do I want this masters in this University in this Country?!

I have been a silent observer of this thread and I’m not happy with a lot of things I’ve been seeing. Lots of people are plying into these “dead” schools thinking they can “finally leave Nigeria” and “finally achieve their dreams”. No boss, think again.

The only reason why people should consider an MSc is simple; to get access to a network from that masters for what ever reason it is that you want. For instance, if you’re working and you want to change your industry, or if you want to change geography (e.g. Nigeria to Canada), then a “good” MSc is perfect for that because you’d get access to a career center and the “access” that’ll give you that platform to achieve the desired career or geographical change you’re looking for.

So at the end of the day, we should ask ourselves, why do I want this masters sef ?
For me personally, I am pursuing a masters because I want more global exposure and I want a change geographically. There are other options I can take to getting what I want obviously. I can decide to stay in Nigeria and finish my professional qualification, then do an MBA and leave. But I want to leave as soon as possible so an MSc is a better option for me.

If someone wants to work in Nigeria and is finding it hard in getting a job, don’t think a masters abroad would solve that problem automatically. You need networks (which you can find for free on LinkedIn), you need trainings (e.g. industry certifications like ICAN or ACCA). You can even decide to apply to Edubridge. Edubridge trains undergraduates and graduates for investment banking and consulting jobs. They bring in a lot of industry leaders and you can use that platform to network to get a job. You can also use the brand “Edubridge” to secure a couple of interviews

If someone comes to tell me that they want to do their masters in Nigeria, CU for instance, for the sake of being more employable, I’d advise them to print their CV and go from company to company, code email and interact with people on LinkedIn, enroll in Edubridge and get reputable industry certifications that'll make them more attractive. Something would surely click, rather than going to spend c. 1 million naira in a school that won’t even give you any “access” to Broad Street or Adeola Odeku, where all the financial companies are, or Ikeja, the hub of technology in Nigeria. Unilag is even better in terms of “access” to Broad Street or Adeola Odeku because they have a very strong alumni presence in that area. (Please note: I am not endorsing an MSc in Unilag)

If you fall among the category of people that want to use an MSc for the *sole* purpose of making your cv more “ghen-ghen”, then you should reconsider it. For instance, If you work in McKinsey, you already have like 95/100 points in terms of CV ghenghen-ness, and there’s no point in leaving your job to do a masters that’ll only increase your CV ghenghen-ness from the 95 it currently is in to a 98 (it can never be greater than 100). Besides, only a few schools can do that, think HBS and Warton.

If you fall among the category of people whose main purpose for a masters is for employability in Nigeria, all you have to do is to find out what your employer is looking for. More often than not, it’s not an international masters they’re looking for. Many of them are looking for experience, many of them are looking for industry certifications. That international masters may not necessarily give you the network to securing a job in your home country. LinkedIn is waay better for that and very much more cost effective.

If you fall among the category of people that want to use an MSc to re-brand themselves. Maybe you didn’t do too well in Undergrad, or you went to a very dead Nigerian University. An MSc is great for that, however, APPLY TO THE BEST SCHOOL YOUR PROFILE CAN AFFORD! Don’t you want the best for yourself?

Last but definitely not the least, If you fall among the category of people that want to use an MSc to run away, say you wan marry and get citizenship, then your case is special. If youre using a “dead school”, good luck with creating a compelling story that you can sell to the VO’s. You think those guys be mumu?

Many people here are looking for shortcuts, you don’t want to write GRE and TOEFL but you want to get admitted with full funding and you also want to secure a mad job upon graduation? Bros how far na? You no hustle but you won chop fufu?. If your input is mediocrity, your output will surely be mediocrity.

“We see better when we stand on the shoulders of those that have gone ahead of us”. This is why we have nairaland but its just turning more and more mediocre with the schools that are being mentioned here daily. Please lets shoot higher shots!

From your post, I think I agree with the GRE and TOEFL part. The other part is influenced by your own personal views.
1. Are you aware that there are over 4000 accredited schools in the United States? If EducationUSA can invite such schools to Nigeria for college fair, please madam, you have no business calling them dead schools!
2. Are you aware that all fingers are not equal? Everyone did not and would not come out with first class or second class upper?
3. Are you aware that everyone must not attend top schools?
4. Are you aware that some of those who went to your so-called dead schools get H1b visa sponsorship?
5. Are you aware that people further their studies for different reasons other than the limited reasons you gave above? The world is full of opportunities and everyone's path is different.
6. Are you aware that going to a top school does not guarantee a job offer after school?

My point: The flavor of your post was haughty. Hence, my response to you. Do not use your personal preferences to judge other people. They are not you. Learn to understand individual differences.

My Visa was approved today at Abuja Embassy.
My transcript goes like this:
VO: Good morning, can I have your passport and I-20?
Me: Good morning(with a smile). I gave her.
VO: You are going for a Ph.D. at the College of William and Mary?
Me: Yes
VO: What course?
Me: Computer Science
VO: Are you married? Do you have kids?
Me: No, I am not married. I have no kids.
VO: Do you have any relative in the US?
Me: No
VO: What do you do?
Me: I am a network security administrator at bleep company.
VO: Your visa has been approved. She gave me my I-20, a white A4 paper with all information on where to pick my passport. And another small white paper with reminders I should note before I travel to the US. I walked out cheerfully.

Thanks to all my fam on the GRE thread, you guys are terrific. And to those helping folks with information here, thank you so much. I learned so much searching for answers from past threads.

To all those going with VIU, please reconsider. I witnessed a guy being queried with his VIU admission. He answered all questions confidently. However, if you were there, you would observe that the VO would not give the VIU guy the visa. Please be wise. If you like, you can contradict my opinion, I won't reply. Thank you all.

theamerican:
For those who have never traveled before and are unsure about what life really is abroad, I may not be able to tell you a lot about other countries but I can speak for myself here and what my experience has been. See, you may not understand the little things that make life worth living until you actually live in (not just visit) a very developed country.

The deal breaker for me is the violation of rights. Some people don't even know their rights not to talk of fighting back when they've been violated. No amount of money I make can make up for that and that's the main reason living here is a win for me. I can't mistakenly hit a soldier's car and start praying for death.

You see me driving an expensive car. Without any proof, you assume the source of my wealth is fraudulent. You stop me and ask to provide my ID, I give it to you, you say "let's go to our station" for absolutely NO freaking reason? I try to call my lawyer, you seize my phone and prevent me from reaching out to people. I didn't break any law, my crime is just driving an expensive car? Lol... you're looking for trouble.

I can sue anybody's father here for any nonsense grin. I don't have to suffer because of anyone's incompetence, recklessness, or stupidity.
If the rights of everyone in Nigeria is respected,we would have progressed. For me, I am scared of a country where the court of law tells the government to release certain people, the government refuses consistently. Then what would happen to minute and inconsequential me if I should have a problem with a high ranking government personel? Our government officials swore under oath to uphold the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, yet they are the first to break it. They don't respect the law, so who do they fear?
Without rule of law, rights of citizens will never be respected.

I recall an incident that made me weep for Nigeria. One evening, I was strolling down a busy roadside with a friend. Suddenly, an elderly man approached us. He had a bag with him. At first, I was scared but I relaxed cause I was not alone. Then this old man started "My children, I am sorry to disturb you. I am embarrased standing here to beg you for money. I came from the East because of lack of payment of our pension. We were told that we should come that it would be sorted out. I came with the belief that it would be sorted out. However, it was not the case. I have no money with me, my children. Help me with 500 naira to go somewhere(can't recall)." Tears were dropping down his sad face when he was telling his travail. I could not help crying, imagining what the old man was passing through. After 35 years of service, he has been disappointed consistently. Looking into his sad eyes that evening was a rude awakening. What would the old man do? Take the Pension Board to court? What are his options. This is just one case out of many.

Please theamerican, keep discussing how things work in a developed country. Maybe, just maybe, some individuals here might see the truth, and challenge the status quo in Nigeria.

EMMAACHILE:

A civil servant without any other external income in Abuja is akin to a pauper. Your reasoning is obviously affected by your income. Look for areas with 33kva lines in Abuja and you could be having stable electricity. It's left for you to think in your environment and if it's too hostile, then migrate to a better place or country. Nobody is glueing you to Abuja.
How does someone doing well or poor affect the general view of the country? You said you need to be selfish to make it in Nigeria. That's a strong statement from you. Meaning anyone making it in Nigeria is selfish and those who migrated and making abroad are good ones? Na wa.

Well, like you mentioned a civil servant relying on only salary is akin to a pauper. Are you aware that civil servants in Nigeria, under the law are only allowed to farm. You can do the math. After working 8am-5pm on weekdays, when do you get to do the farm work? Who are we fooling?

Why would everyone in Nigeria not have access to 33kvA lines? Why do I have to search for it. Or be special to have access to it. My dear, you don't get the thrust of this discussion. If there is rule of law, equality and justice, most people in Nigeria should have access to the basic necessities of life and should not be connected or "oversharp" to get it.

Most people making it in Nigeria have to be selfish. It is the way it is. You have to find a way to owe salaries, or reduce salaries of your workers. You can evade taxes. You can do anything you want in Nigeria and go scot-free. For some individuals, that is the joy of being in Nigeria, the possibilities of getting away with breaking the law. Oh yeah, I have heard this being discussed as one of the perks of being a Nigerian. Ever wondered why MMM thrived in Nigeria? Selfishness. Many persons closed their eyes to the notion behind that PONZI. The rich dubiously taking from the poor to become richer and leaving the poor poorer. That is the reflection of our socioeconomic life in Nigeria.

On your last paragraph, obviously, you did not read that from me. So I have nothing to say on that.

In conclusion, if someone wants to leave Nigeria to a saner country, where there is orderliness, it is his/her choice. Everyone cannot survive here. For those who are making it here, well done.

As I mentioned earlier, you need to be myopic and selfish to live in Nigeria successfully. If someone claims to have government generated power supply 24/7, does his claim reflect the position of majority of Nigerians? I live in Abuja and I can say on average, power supply in my home lasts for 6 hours a day. Currently, it is raining and there is no light. Oh yes, I have to pray fervently for no rain because it means no light. But then, what would the subsistence farmer rely on for his water supply if my prayer is answered? In effect, I supply my own power through my noisy and unhealthy generator more than I receive from AEDC.

My office is at the city center and yes, you would think we would have 24/7 power supply. Well, unfortunately, we have to run those generators almost 24/7.

Look around you before you say Nigeria is developing. Maybe visit the villages too. No good roads, no power supply, no water supply, no healthcare. When will all these infrastructure be provided? It is easy to sit in my office and say there is so much job opportunities for Nigerian youths when there are recorded statistics to the contrary.
