PJ123:While I share in your frustration about the state of the nation let's get one thing straight. It's not just about salaries o. How are you expected to do your job with zero support as regards labs, office space, lecture rooms? For your info we use waste paper to send memos and result vetting for senate for goodness sake! We practically use our own money to print official documents. You say they earn more than civil servants. How much is a professors salary? This is after sinking millions over 20 years on average getting this knowledge with little or no sponsorship o. Practically all the buildings are TETFUND sponsored. That's thanks to ASUU. They have raised school fees, my final year students can't even perform in a lab cos no reagents or test tubes. The problems are endless, the system is dying and the quality of graduates is worsening. I can guarantee you the turnover rate of qualified lecturers and researchers in universities is growing. We lost a lot of colleagues to brain drain last year and it's poised to get worse. FG doesn't consider education a priority like pilgrimage and the lecturers are losing their passion. You say ASUU should fight? The same students we fight for for better service delivery will call all lecturers pedophiles, rapists and handout salesmen. Na the same students you say mk we bleed for? The last 8 months strike, dem pay complete? |
helinues:You're a buffoon. Accept this and knw peace |
firearcher:Define amicably. Doesn't it boggle the mind that we are still talking about negotiating a 2009 agreement that govt keeps running away from? Multiple attempts by ASUU to get federal government to make good on signed agreements and they are still called names. If government is sincere these demands by ASUU will be met by sundown. I doubt earned allowance owed is even up to half of 90bn but they rather spend on Hajj with zero returns on investment |
Oya toilet flies come and eat Reno poo before it crusts. |
The ignorance on this thread is something else. The countless drug and organ trials that they used non blacks because Africans generally fear trials nobody is asking. If they pick only whites now, blacks will cry marginalization. Some clowns are even accusing them of playing God but will rush to the hospital for surgery. One low self esteem ridden creature is even insulting his race. It's not your race that's the problem, it's just you! |
Dibodibo:Correction. In the early 90s coke was 1.50. Choco milo was 15k. Coke entered 5 naira towards the mid 90s |
Kusu12:That's all you guys are good at. At least he's saying the mind of Nigerians. You on the other hand have zero idea what this will do to businesses and even regular folks. Rather than offer counter views na insult. Obi isn't president. Tinubu is. So grow up and face the issue at hand. |
Urheadmaster:Which rich northerner has given out his underaged daughter in marriage? |
Taraba suppose dey number one. Benue should be number one emeritus |
NewYorkCity:Abeg in alphabetical order. AEDC first. Let's be civil pls ![]() |
Even FreestuffNG can't defend this. Better stay in your hole |

Congratulations. However first class in nigeria na wahala. A grim reality is a good chunk may find themselves in POS boxes cause they were sentenced to education in nigeria |
I thought the last one is yet to be concluded |
Groom is playing. Tivland that you can marry on credit? |
Ewedegubbler:If you mean those innocent women and children being bombed and killed with impunity are my brothers and sisters, then yeah they are. My Bible preaches love and compassion, not an eye for an eye and then some. What brand of Judaism or Christianity do you practice that endorses genocide? |
Lanre1st:He's on his own. The Christianity isn't more original than those practiced in Palestine. Wrong is wrong. |
Israel losing battle isn't new. The Bible is riddled with stories where they had their asses handed out to them. I'm against the war cos innocent lives are being lost on a daily. My religion doesn't support wanton destruction of lives. No reasonable person would support it. If you believe your God endorses it, there is no hope for you. |
Love800:For one highly rated journals puts the researchers out there and boosts visibility. The outcome of the research is publicized and if need possibly opens it for further validation. New protocols can be replicated and applied in future works. In most cases other pple may be working on a similar work too. Due to the huge wage bill required to run universities, depts operate on targets and tight budgets. This forces then to be more objective driven. Partnership building with the private sector becomes their bread and butter. As part of their social responsibility, companies invest in institutions via grants and donations. Schools in turn help them answer questions bothering on innovations and discovery. |
Love800:Grants are of diff forms. Some cover all expenses pertaining to a research. Some part of it. Grant isn't even necessarily money. Could even be access to a laboratory in another country to carry out some analyses. Real elaborate grants even places the researchers on a stipend and cover travel expenses. End result of any grant requires your findings to be published in high quality journals, may even require presentations at conferences. Contrary to what some pple alluded to earlier, you don't propose a study just cos you think it's relevant. Grant awarding bodies have terms of reference that have to be followed to be even considered. In more saner climes, staff of a dept are for the most part employed under a running grant. Only a few are tenured. A grant can last for years, allowing the dept to employ staff and admit students that will work under a project. The employed staff will in turn service the dept on a number of roles. Here in Nigeria there's no target set on staff per se. Aside published works and admin duties, you dont need much to make promotion. How many professors today will mk that rank if a grant condition was set? While that would improve the quality of research and qualified hands, it's not actually the fault of academics. The tetfund we are even talking of was borne out of agitations by academic staff. Where are the industries and pharmaceutical companies? They are the backbone of research in foreign countries. Pfizer can sink in billions every year to Harvard or Texas a&m to research cancer. Na orange drugs go fund research here? |
epainos:That's what separates us. You are a tout on a faceless forum. You don't knw me but I knw a lot about you already. I don't need the government to give me money, I'm not frustrated like you. I run a school, I'm done with my studies and I'm a proud farmer with meaningful research under my belt. Your ignorance will be the death of you. My earlier offer still stands:,share your achievements in writing and I will share mine, since your into dick measurements |
My problem with your type is you just sit down and assume rubbish. You don't even knw the first thing abt r and d. 10k to develop a variety of vegetable for seed? My God! That's not even enough sample preparation for gene extraction. You say lecturers are lazy? I will have you knw most that even still care to carry out research have to fund it with their own money. If you say the money is embezzled prove it with evidence. Foundation stock was sold you say: where is the story? The fresian brought to napri years ago is the reason napri dairy unit still functions and is thriving. The crosses have improved the herd quality. That's evidence. Funaab is breaking records with their chicken genotyping project. I already mentioned IAR in ABU. Pple in universities are making progress. Grants are far and in between. Nobody is begging for free money. But don't accuse pple of embezzlement when it's not even available. We do have bad eggs but don't generalize. A large number are making the best of a bad situation. Better pray the current trend where the ones who are fed up and are leaving for greener pastures don't continue. If they were that bad, countries won't be looking for them. |
epainos:I now know how you operate. You hide your weakness to have a clean discuss by resorting to insults. Show me where you can carry out research with 10k. Even the IAR based works on Soya and groundnut that yielded the Samnut and samsoy varieties we use widely in nigeria spanned decades. Don't say what you don't knw. Shebi u write as u claim. Post the links to your paper and I Will post mine. Speaking of grants, I have never secured a Nigerian govt grant but I have worked on 2 papers developed from grants gotten from non government agencies based abroad. Your take on cost of grants is laughable. Solid journals cost an arm.and a leg. Your a housing agent. Stick to what you knw. It's not my fault u had a traumatic university experience. Don't tag lecturers as dull. Imagine house agent calling kettle black. You guys are no saints either. Go read on works done at research institutes from napri to nvri. Vaccines on trypanosomiasis developed in collaboration with researchers at nvri wasn't developed by housing agents collecting agency fee for housing with outdoor kitchen. |
epainos:Contrary to what you claim to knw, Nigerian lecturers and researchers do produce groundbreaking research that have received global acclaim. If it's in the field of Agriculture and biotechnology I can tell you we got you covered. The sad thing is publishing in highly rated journals is only possible through grants and high level abeg. Elseiver journals are expensive to publish without grant money. Where will a lecturer doing an independent research get $2000 to publish? At best we collaborate with other universities abroad. Not all lecturers are dull. Same with lecturers abroad, not all smart and attract grants |
nnamdi640:What allowances? Sorry but that's it. It's called consolidated for a reason |
Ade3131:Even Bible is littered with cases where the chosen ones were against the will of God. Even pagans were used to reset their brains |
Government of 'soon', 'to', 'wants to', 'may', and 'about to'. |
OlawaleBammie:Dumb analogy. There's no incentive to mk the new doctors stay. For your info, universities are running out of medical personnel to even teach these doctors. My uni had to even tell 300L students to repeat 200l because they were unable to secure qualified personnel to take up visiting lecturer positions to train them. Be there looking at life in 1D |
israelmao:Trust me the supplementary budgets that will follow will be mind shattering |
All the bootlickers and mindless acolytes prowling nairaland daily looking for critical thinkers to tag them obidient will hide their boil ridden faces and malnutrition-powered receding hairlines and avoid this thread. |
We4all:Oga don rock the boat for the father of 3😁 |
