University workers still earn better salaries than many government workers except politicians. ASUU should fight for Nigeria and not the one part, the current arrangement in the country cannot foster meaningful development. If they increase your salary and you get new cars or build new house, you're not safe because the whole country is sick. They should dismantle this unholy union called Nigeria and every region should go her separate ways or better still they should thoroughly restructure the country. This I believe what ASUU as intellectual body who knows better should be fighting for and not window dressing approach. If ASUU president becomes the President of Nigeria today, he cannot sign that yeye agreement you're talking about because the problems at the center are too much and with several conflicting interests and corruption everywhere including the so called university.

While I share in your frustration about the state of the nation let's get one thing straight. It's not just about salaries o. How are you expected to do your job with zero support as regards labs, office space, lecture rooms? For your info we use waste paper to send memos and result vetting for senate for goodness sake! We practically use our own money to print official documents. You say they earn more than civil servants. How much is a professors salary? This is after sinking millions over 20 years on average getting this knowledge with little or no sponsorship o. Practically all the buildings are TETFUND sponsored. That's thanks to ASUU. They have raised school fees, my final year students can't even perform in a lab cos no reagents or test tubes. The problems are endless, the system is dying and the quality of graduates is worsening. I can guarantee you the turnover rate of qualified lecturers and researchers in universities is growing. We lost a lot of colleagues to brain drain last year and it's poised to get worse. FG doesn't consider education a priority like pilgrimage and the lecturers are losing their passion.
You say ASUU should fight? The same students we fight for for better service delivery will call all lecturers pedophiles, rapists and handout salesmen. Na the same students you say mk we bleed for? The last 8 months strike, dem pay complete?

For one highly rated journals puts the researchers out there and boosts visibility. The outcome of the research is publicized and if need possibly opens it for further validation. New protocols can be replicated and applied in future works. In most cases other pple may be working on a similar work too. Due to the huge wage bill required to run universities, depts operate on targets and tight budgets. This forces then to be more objective driven. Partnership building with the private sector becomes their bread and butter. As part of their social responsibility, companies invest in institutions via grants and donations. Schools in turn help them answer questions bothering on innovations and discovery.

Dis grant of a tin, is it dat after securing the grant(which is money or funds), then u use it to write or do ur research. After finishing the research, will u be paid for it? And who is paying u for dis?

Grants are of diff forms. Some cover all expenses pertaining to a research. Some part of it. Grant isn't even necessarily money. Could even be access to a laboratory in another country to carry out some analyses. Real elaborate grants even places the researchers on a stipend and cover travel expenses. End result of any grant requires your findings to be published in high quality journals, may even require presentations at conferences. Contrary to what some pple alluded to earlier, you don't propose a study just cos you think it's relevant. Grant awarding bodies have terms of reference that have to be followed to be even considered.
In more saner climes, staff of a dept are for the most part employed under a running grant. Only a few are tenured. A grant can last for years, allowing the dept to employ staff and admit students that will work under a project. The employed staff will in turn service the dept on a number of roles. Here in Nigeria there's no target set on staff per se. Aside published works and admin duties, you dont need much to make promotion. How many professors today will mk that rank if a grant condition was set? While that would improve the quality of research and qualified hands, it's not actually the fault of academics. The tetfund we are even talking of was borne out of agitations by academic staff. Where are the industries and pharmaceutical companies? They are the backbone of research in foreign countries. Pfizer can sink in billions every year to Harvard or Texas a&m to research cancer. Na orange drugs go fund research here?

Since not all smart attract grants, keep the blackmailing government. You write something, and it doesn't attract a grant...what does that say? If someone in the private sector writes a proposal and is not accepted, does the person blackmail the government?

Get it into your head..govt will no longer pay for your incompetencies. Go and do your worst. Go and compete with your fellow researchers. You write what you think is smart. Keep wasting your time. I have given you clues... maybe this is what you need to hear but you aren't paying attention to it cos you have your mind in doing what your broke mentors taught you. Oga, I will say it the last time...(it may not be for you but for another lecturer or researcher cos I see you only want to cash out from govt)... research on what is trending and what investors want. Here are the areas/topics:
1. Gene editing ....you can go into many areas not even the technical part. Agric, health, wildlife, livestock, etc I have witnessed a chemical engineering professor get a huge grant in this area. How did a chemical engineering professor link his work to this area? Go use your head. Stop writing what investors don't need.
2. Environmental Sustainability... agriculture, health, business, economics, ecology, and many other areas.
3. Renewable energy....part of 2 above...but very wide. Of course not only the technical areas you can work on.
4. Seeds production if you are in agric. You don't need any grant or rubbish whatever to do this. With just N10,000 you can get to work. All you need is time. And you can use modern tech to accelerate it. Only 5sqm is enough to get the job done. And you don't need to pay any salary to anyone. I know what I am saying. When you get the seeds done....go for seeds that make sense...tomatoes and peppers...can make you rich. Go cultivate 1 ha after your research...beat the 100 tons benchmark...hit 200 tons. This will give you nothing less than 85 million naira. Use the money to start bigger projects. A crate (25kg) of tomato is a minimum of N15k in the market. Calculate the number of crates and you have your sales. Remove your expenses. Shikena. If you are into agriculture, your school has free land.....free many things. You have the platform there. There are many abandoned resources you can use that you won't pay for. I am sure this is the same in other areas too.

An agric researcher can keep a plot of vegetables to manage his expenditures. The same goes for livestock researchers. But nope...they only want grants to loot. Lol. The abandoned equipment is there. Tell your colleagues that they can do something with them without waiting for govt.

I remember the case of expensive parents' cattle stocks imported ....and those lecturers sold all. Lol. Use Google to find the meaning of parent stocks. You will know what I am saying. Your colleagues are looters. I use agric cos this subject readers can relate to. If I start with oil and gas....hehehhe... or health. Mehn! You guys are unserious. Very lazy set of people..

Contrary to what you claim to knw, Nigerian lecturers and researchers do produce groundbreaking research that have received global acclaim. If it's in the field of Agriculture and biotechnology I can tell you we got you covered. The sad thing is publishing in highly rated journals is only possible through grants and high level abeg. Elseiver journals are expensive to publish without grant money. Where will a lecturer doing an independent research get $2000 to publish? At best we collaborate with other universities abroad. Not all lecturers are dull. Same with lecturers abroad, not all smart and attract grants
