Are you talking about the same funds that go into the private pockets of greedy politicians?

One of these things can happen;

It's either more attention is placed in the quality of our education and there's increased budgetary allowance

Or privatisation: which is why private schools/teachers charge so much.
Private schools charge so much but they still don't pay the teachers reasonable well.

The primary problem is the total budget allocation for education in the country. There's no money to pay teachers or even lecturers higher salariés. Some Governors do try to enforce additional training/qualifications for teachers but which teacher after earning expensive qualifications will settle for such meagre wages?

Compare European institutions; working libraries with constant and free internet. You have access to as many research journals as you want, if you can't access it, request and they will get it for you.

This is why a huge proportion of research and theses from our institutions end up in the Dustbin. This is why we cannot develop as a nation because we can't research and discover solutions tailored to our environment.

It's a pity.
There is money o.... if govt make it a priority to pay teachers well, the money will come out.

I think some states like Delta, Rivers pays teachers average of 90k, that was around 2013, I don't know how much it is now.

But the problem is, there is no room for growth. So a teacher can spend almost 25years teaching and he's salary won't exceed 200k.

People are of the opinion that once you're teaching, then you haven't upgraded yourself enough. To them, by upgrading yourself is to leave teaching and find something else to do. This and many other absurd reasoning is why African is where it is today.
That's the truth... But if the goods hands upgrade and leave teaching, who will now train our Young ones.

When my grandfather was a teacher , a village head master he lived large back in the day with a house given to him by the state colonial government also given to other teachers
In the house you'll get a good running water and electricity
He was earning 1500 as his salary back then

Nigeria isn't what it used to be and it'll be never
You said nothing but the truth. Our govt these days don't even encourage teachers one bit.

Good thought. However, the university is a system and by the time person progresses to the university, they are close to the end of their career. They won't know much about the university system as someone who joined as a GA/AL shortly after graduation.
Not really... If you start teaching after graduation, let's say 25 years. If you move into lecturing after 10years, you will be 35 years. That's still very young age for the candidate.

Well, it happened during by youth service at Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo. The then provost, provided an opportunity for teachers with Masters in the College secondary school to apply for lecturing job. Some I now have completed their PhD while some are about to.

When you put the right peg in the right hole, the squares will be fixed. Leadership is key..!!!
This is the best way to go. Virtually every state in Nigeria have at least 2 universities, 2 polys and college of Education. If the govt picks lecturers from Secondary school teachers, teaching jobs will be attracting the best hands as everyone will be seeing the growth in the job.

He no know . I know some who earns 25k as teachers in a private school. Na so the school owner still dey stress them untop the peanut.. As I hear d rubbish.. I was about going to the school to asked the stupid owner some questions.. D person when I wan go fight for ,was pleading that my action might make him loose his job.. I have told him, next year he is leaving there.. I hate to see someone that is humble, suffer as slave..
But all these private schools paying peanuts to teachers, does it mean that they don't make much profit from the school.

Well I earn less than 15 thousand, teaching 3 subjects in three different classes and some other added general subjects in my main class (primary school)
The amount been paid to teachers is another topic to discuss in its own. My own is, let there be a clear path to career growth.

If my passion is teaching, and I decided to be teaching for the rest of my life, at least let there be growth. This will encourage me to do more.

If am earning 15k now and I know that within 2-5 years, I might have improved my self to get a lecturing job. That's enough encouragement to give in my best.

You know why you felt that way, your salary and current status is way better than your teacher. What you proffer cannot work because you have to earn certain degree before you can become a lecturer. Therefore, if the teacher want to become a lecturer, he needs acquire the necessary degree.

On the status of the teacher, most of us feel the same way but what I have realised is that the way our country is structured, it relegate some profession, teaching inclusive. Also, hourly payment has shown to be a better way to put all professions on the same grade which is herculean for us in Africa. Is there a way forward, until those at the helms of affairs feel the pulse of the downtrodden, we would continue to complain.
That is what am saying. Some of the teachers are already doing it. Some who have degree cert do go for masters and then doctorate as they continue to apply for lecturing jobs.

Now what am after is that let govt make it official that all lecturers must be sourced from secondary school teachers.

That way you will see more teachers going for degree courses, more teachers will brush up their Credentials so as to meet the requirements of lecturing jobs.

This will encourage continues growth and more people will join teaching jobs since they are seeing that the career path is juicy at the end.

I met my government class teacher somewhere in ikeja few months ago.. about 18yrs since I left secondary school.. he was trekking with a bell.. man Neva change. He was a gospel preacher . I called him and he couldn't recognise me.. until I made him remember everything way back. He almost cried.. Thanks to hubby. He's now working as a manager in a factory with good pay. I always smile at life and everything it offers
Wow... That's nice of you and your hubby.

But then, if we continue to pull out teachers from school just to make their life better, who will now remain to teach the younger generation.

Na the upgrade, evolving and packaging. Side gigs like tutorials, private lessons and writing books for pay more.
I no fit employ my high school introtech teacher to teach my kids in 2023
Parents go still complain of high school fee by private schools
Most won't upgrade because they know they aren't going far as a teacher. The once who upgrade are doing so because they are leaving the teaching profession.

What you are saying has bad long-term implications as so many field would be left empty

Truth is if you want teachers to earn more there is only two solutions

1) higher taxes... Most school all over the world are funded by property tax

2) high school fees this is clear to understand

But for me the best model is what Peter obi did in Anambra... That's the best model for public health and education sector... It's just fantastic

But I would like to add a bit of what ameachi did in rivers state first then apply Obi principles... Once you add this two... Trust me the results would be wonderful
What did Peter Obi and Amaechi did?

I was thinking you were thinking of upgrading him financially only for you to start talking about government. You ended up not saying anything tangible about helping your secondary school teacher.
Our old students association have been in constant touch with the school helping out in the best way we can, but I never for once imagined that the salary of a teacher who have stayed that long will still be at that range.

The pay is fair enough for an old school teacher.
It's up to him to advance his career.
Note that he still earns from other gigs like home lesson teacher and others
For someone to have worked for more than 20 years... At least the salary should be like 300k+

If na business him do for that long, him for don blow.

With this in place, teachers can actually have a career and have proper growth education wise and financially.

This will help mitigate the issue where teachers will be teaching in primary and secondary for years without any significant changes in their financial life.

Like I said earlier, some teachers through their own personal efforts moved from secondary school teacher to university lecturer. But it will be better if govt creates a career path for them. This will encourage better hands to enter the teaching profession as the path will be promising for them.
EducationRe: I Saw My Secondary School Teacher After 15 Years And Am Thinking About This. by Rich4god(op): 9:42am On Oct 14, 2023
Continued...

Now what am thinking is....

Let govt officially create a career path for teachers/lecturers. Even though some of them are already doing it. But let it be official now.

Let govt and teachers council and NUC make it mandatory that lecturers should only be employed from secondary school teachers and secondary school teachers should only be employed from primary and nursery school teachers.

This is how it will work.

Let's say a graduate(BSc, B.Ed, NCE) starts his or her teaching career as a primary or nursery school teacher. From there the teacher aquires more qualification and progress to secondary. Then from secondary, the teacher probably gets a master's or more degree, then during recruitment of lecturer whether private or public, the candidates that will apply are those who are secondary school teachers with the necessary qualifications.

If the university is looking for professionals from industries, let those set of lecturer be visiting lecturers.
EducationI Saw My Secondary School Teacher After 15 Years And Am Thinking About This. by Rich4god(op): 9:39am On Oct 14, 2023
I was at my work place when one of my secondary school teacher came in for some inquiries.

I finish secondary school about 15 years back and this teacher was already there before I entered JSS 1 and from my findings, he is still working there.

Now to the main issue... He came for some financial advice and so he provided me with his details. Currently his salary is about 125,000 and I heard he's now the vice principal academics of the school.

I was really heartbroken. How can someone sacrifice more than 20 years of his life building up leaders of tomorrow only to still be earning less than 200k. This is not good at all.

With this type of poor financial payment to teachers, it's obvious we can't be having serious minded individuals to take up the teaching profession.

From what everyone knows, teachers don't have a clear path to career growth. The highest one can get is to be a principal and the package that comes with that position will definitely be less than 300k.

Every now and then, there is a match organised just to feature veterans and classic players.

And each time these matches are organised, even though it's friendly matches, stadium capacity is usually filled.

This only shows one thing.

Players we have these days are craps...

The only true football players were those who retired from 2015 backwards.

Now aside from Ronaldo and Messi, which other football player is worthy of mention.
