Crime / Re: Trigger-Happy Policeman Kills Corps Member, Injures LAUTECH Graduate In Oyo by Richardjcooper(m): 11:36pm On Apr 23
Update & Context!!!

Shooting occurred on the early hours of the 23rd of April, 2024. Lautech’s convocation was 22nd of April, 2024.

Boys decided to have a party to celebrate. Fight broke out, something bouncers could handle. The club called police. Police came and while “settling” the issue decided to shoot. 3 people were shot. One died instantly as he was shot on the head. His brother the graduand whom Punch interviewed sustained injuries and has now died. 2 brothers dead and 1 injured.

Of course, the police is protecting the Saheed guy. Saheed is currently in police custody but not arrest or in cuffs. He’s been shielded.

Punch for some reason decided to skip the name of the club the shootings occurred. Reeplay Club, Under G, Ogbomosho.

The pastor turned Soun of Ogbomosho is unbothered and told protesting students that he’s not the cause of their problems and they should not protest in front of his Bentley.

Shina Peller an alumni of the school was present and responded to protesters.

Justice must be served. Beyond that, policing in Nigeria must be changed. I’ll blame the system cos this is not a one-off incident. It is alleged that this same Saheed was the one that shot at an underage Fulani boy while students came out to protest in their numbers during Endsars in Ogbomosho. The blow back of that killing led to widespread violence in Ogbomosho in 2020.

This should not be allowed to slide. School is feigning ignorance as it happened outside school premises. Club is keeping quiet.

Let’s speak up.

Religion / Re: Oro Worshippers & Truth And Spirit Prophetic Church Clash In Lagos, One Dead by Richardjcooper(m): 11:40am On Aug 25, 2022
Sometimes violence cannot be avoided. When oro people come for you, they come to kill and at the very least render someone a vegetable. They only defended themselves from presumed killers that came for them.

Another argument is the church itself as a Holy Place is “no longer” powerful. Nothing stops the Oro people from dropping dead on their own accord as they tried to disturb an ongoing peaceful service.

This should have been the battle of the gods or God.

About religious intolerance, we’re all guilty of it. But we’re not ready to have that discussion. Even within Christianity, there’s intolerance. Y’all Christians will go to the university and have a Muslim roommate for 4 years and where you draw the line is in marriage. Christians can’t marry Muslims. Deeper life won’t marry Winners all because of doctrine. Let’s not forget we’ve been indoctrinated to believe that all traditional worship and culture are evil.

Is there any hope for Nigeria?

I was struck by lightning in my room while using my phone a few weeks ago as rain was falling. Later that day, I call an electrician and confirmed the thunder arrester was still good as all currents were earthed to the ground.

After the shock, I laughed and thanked God. It certainly wasn’t a day for me to leave

The LASTMAN he created is it not to give people Jobs, his free health policies who were they for,
IPP initiative was not to supply electricity to only his house sir, The housing Initiative was to make housing easier for the people of Lagos just like in the developed countries. Lagos being an Investment hub, is it not providing Job for more than 30% of the Nigerian youth population. THINK

I guess you’ll continue deceiving yourself. You support mediocrity. In this case, below mediocrity. Hospitals in Lagos are still filled to the brim. Not enough doctors, not enough hospitals. The workers aren’t even optimally paid. Is there an housing scheme in Lagos by the government? Where a 2-Bedroom flat in a low-cost housing costs 17 million? Where people millions of people are either homeless or live in shanties? As you write this, there’s a huge chance you do not have electricity in your house. We’re all comfortable with power banks and generators. The lastma you talk about, are the running optimally? Are Lagos roads now free of traffic congestions? Or was it not made to generate revenue for the government through fines and bookings which officials steal?

We’ve not had a good governance in Lagos and Nigeria at large. Fashola’s tenure was mediocre but media gloated over it cos that mediocrity is the best we have seen in recent times probably the best.

Unfortunately, Nigeria is setup to fail. We’re doomed to fail. Tinubu, Atiku, Osinbajo, Obi, APC, PDP and same old stock of politicians have nothing to offer us. Best bet, they want their names written in history as the president of this country. We have so many fundamental problems in this country not to talk of security and you sit there and say someone is providing employment for 30% of the youths. At best 2% and it is still not on a level playing ground as these same people contesting whether in power or not have slots for these jobs. It is obvious you’re not a patriot. You’ve probably been paid or you’re just not exposed enough to the realities on ground. You’re a beneficiary of this corruption and you plan to benefit more from it that is why you see black and call it white.

People are sleeping under heat and mosquitoes while their electricity tariffs increase, people cannot afford to live in conducive houses either by rent or ownership. Majority of the citizenry borrow to survive and can’t even afford to pay back, yet they increase your taxes, the price of food increases daily. People can no longer do business. People are forced to do evil to survive. Because we laugh away our sorrows through IG skits, you think the problems suddenly stopped existing? You think we’re in a better place? You have a right to support whosoever you choose but don’t come here and propagate lies. Have a good day.

There’s a Christian militia group in Uganda, Lord’s Resistance Army. It is possible. Is it necessary with the situation of things in Nigeria? It isn’t. Violence is not the answer.

Nigerians as a whole are already violent. Northerners and Southerners. Christians and Muslim alike. Forming a militia just means we’re playing into the hands of these political charlatans ruling us.

At this moment, I’m still brainstorming for non violent solutions to this compromised Nigeria. I’m not a career diplomat so it will be naive of me to suggest that line of action. Disintegration and restructuring is not the solutions to our problems but that is what the people want. Let the will of the people come to pass. It must be actualized. That’s real democracy. No country in the whole world practices the “government of the people by the people for the people” rule. We just keep deceiving ourselves

Crime / Re: Why is Yahoo no longer consider as a crime? by Richardjcooper(m): 8:30pm On Apr 04, 2022
TL;DR
We’re at this point in our society because of the government. What is good is good, same goes for what is bad. I’m not going to come from the cliché angle that government has not provided the citizens with jobs, amenities and enabling environment for youths to succeed (which is true btw)

Sociologically, Nigeria is ruled based on greed. The youths see their government stealing, they also wish they can do same. It’s a multiplier effect. While it is not easy to get into the political space and be relevant (just to go and steal), it is rather quite easy for the young Nigerian to run scams and particularly get away with it. Men with great resolve have watered down their ego and are now a partaker in the multi billion dollar industry called “yahoo yahoo”.

We look up to our government for everything. The society tends to mirror government actions to whatever suits them. We believe in luck because hard work has consistently failed. It even seems foolish. It’s no news that there are more awaiting thieves waiting to get into power than the actual thieves stealing our commonwealth at the moment.

People have seen their elder siblings who finish from the university with a good grade sitting idle at home, then learning catering to not having sales. It’s a vicious cycle just in different forms. It’s natural instinct for people to tend to break away from the norm.

Like other social vices, this shows the decay in the society. Nigeria needs to change as a whole. Yahoo is not the only “epidemic” in the country. No sector or industry is performing optimally. If we want a better country that provides level playing field for all, we can try these seemingly difficult solutions. If we can’t make these solutions work, we perhaps have no hope as it would mean we have been totally defeated.

SOLUTIONS

- We as citizens of this country need to organize. We need to pick consensus candidates for all elected positions across the country. For this we might need a political party

- We need to be strong willed about changing the country as a whole

- Do NOT collect your PVC if you’re going to vote APC or PDP for any elected position

- Only cast your vote only for a consensus candidate outside the current main political parties

These might take more than 50 years to achieve but we can at least try. Power must always belong to the people

Romance / Re: My Sister, You Have Been Dating Him For 1 Year Plus & You Dont Know This by Richardjcooper(m): 1:19pm On Mar 26, 2022
Tbh, it goes both ways. Transparency is key. In Nigeria, most folks with AS genotype wouldn’t agree to marry another AS genotype partner for obvious reasons.

But this is 2022, there are solutions to these things now provided you have the money and the emotional strength to support each other when on it. Before marriage, discuss extensively with fertility experts and gynaecologists. There are various options to take for child birth. A common one is IVF. Know the pros and cons of it. If any of you are having doubts at this point, it is safe to call it quits. These processes are of course more expensive than natural conception. So it only makes sense to be financially buoyant if you’re considering marriage in this condition.

Adoption is also another “solution” or you guys can decide not to have biological children till you can financially and emotionally afford IVF or other solutions.

If you meet a partner and the only “red flag” is genotype, it can be worked around provided you both are on the same page so nothing actually comes as a surprise during marriage. Life no suppose hard especially if money Dey

You keep missing the point...the impact is insignificant, it's not fuel...the value each transportation bus conveys runs in the millions sometimes, on a trip, the value the heavy duty vehicles convey is in tens of millions. Government earns taxes via commercial activities...N2000 per trip tolling cost, can not make any significant difference in the profit margins of the transporters or distributors of the commodities being conveyed, while the managers of the tolling point, will have a sizeable amount of money to provide the services I mentioned earlier. Service is important. let's be reasonable. Highway tollgate is fine and reasonable, not inner city or metropolis tolling. Western nations also have highway toll points.

You’ve made salient points but they are not Nigeria-centric. Government can take charge of major industries for national development. But reality now is we the citizens have resolved to helping ourselves out with these amenities

You are just being a typical Nigerian who wants the government to do everything for them while they do absolutely nothing. A people who demand 24-hour power supply, but keep bypassing their meter so they don't pay power bills. Yes, that's a typical Nigerian and that, my friend, is the highest level of irresponsibility.

TBH, there's nothing wrong with being asked to pay N500 -1000 while traveling 500km as long as there's accountability and the money is used to maintain the federal road.

The debate we should be having here is that the government should use part of the money to settle the police checkpoints that will be stationed along two tollgates that are hundreds of kilometers apart so that motorists don't spend a lot of money while traveling.

As for paying tolls to use world-class federal roads, nobody should be complaining because even the so-called poor people you speak of don't have cars. As far as I am concerned, cars are luxury in Nigeria because we don't run a government-sponsored credit system. That's why a vast majority of us drive fairly used cars.

You still don’t get it. Nigeria and Africa at large cannot afford to be capitalist. We don’t even have the capital for God’s sake.

Yes I want government to do everything for us. That’s what the situation of the country needs. Anyone who is well-to-do in Nigeria is purely lucky. The same hard work, prayer(juju), smart work the well-to-do person did to become wealthy has been done and will be done by others but with different result. There’s no level playing ground.

Private solutions to public problems will not solve Nigeria’s problems at large. I want government to fix public schools (world standard), public hospitals (quality and quantity), security, housing and welfare of Nigerians across board. When government has done this, then they are allowed to appropriately tax the citizens. Nigeria has so much potential but not caring for our less privileged brothers and sisters will make us repeat the mistakes of the generations of the ruling class. Most Nigerians are one ailment from crowd funding. Cars should not be a luxury, good housing too.

Think of the good of all Nigerians. That’s the only way we can move forward as a country

Really? And not equity in terms of equal distribution of the tolls?

Ideally, equity should come first for a nation that is just. But this is Nigeria. We’re fantastically corrupt. It’s no news anymore. My point was there are more tolls in the south because there are more southern corrupt politicians. It is their companies or companies affiliated to them that will be in charge of toll collection. There are also more southern motorists. Southerners are also obliged to pay more because of their better economy.

All reasons stated above are corruption and extortion based

Your first question is logical, but the second one has an answer. The best roads in Lagos are on the island and are tolled. Example, the popular Lekki tollgate where soldiers killed Nigerians connects Sangotedo to Victoria Island. Also, the Lekki/Ikoyi link bridge is tolled.

If tolling federal roads will make us enjoy world-class roads in this country, nobody should be complaining. Federal roads are not like state roads you can pass 20 times in a day.

The tollgates in Lagos are so terrible that if you pass 10 times, you pay 10 times. However, those roads are some of the best in Lagos State. Motorists should be asked to pay once every day on federal tollgates.

“As far as I can afford it” syndrome. It is what it is.

Let’s think about the less privileged. Those living on just above minimum wage. That’s where our humanity lies. There has never been a protest or demonstration because of inflation or the poverty in the land.

Government should not by any means increase the suffering of the people by increasing tax, levies or what not. It is insensitive. Especially when it is no secret that the ones the collect now are not well managed. Governance is not rocket science

U are the one looking very stupid. If u don't see anything wrong with a scenario where one is travelling from Lagos to Owerri a distance of less than 600 kilometers and pays tolls four times while Kano-Kaduna express road of nearly half of that distance isn't tolled yet well maintained by the government then u must be very biased.

You can do better than this. Think. Do you know why there are more tolls in the south? Because companies affiliated to southern politicians will manage these tolls. Long and short is there’s more corruption in the south than the north. This is the reality of Nigeria.

Our collective fight should be that we should ask how these companies were selected, on what basis, are they qualified, who owns them??

We’ve all being divided by ethnicity, class, wealth, gender and so on. The most important thing is we’re all black, we’re all Africans. Nigeria itself has no identity as our culture as a people is CORRUPTION.

Let’s stop playing into the hands of these our “divide-and-conquer” rulers. If we’re to rewrite destiny as a group, we have to work together.

IMO, there’s nothing like Northern agenda. You can call me naive. The northern oligarchs have impoverished the north, they have used poverty and religion as a weapon against their people so they cannot think straight or fight for their rights. No wonder they discourage every form of “western” education. The south has it’s challenges too.

The real divide is the rich vs the poor. Politicians from all geopolitical zones eat, wine and dine together in the 2 major political parties the country. You know why? CORRUPTION

There’s corruption in the north, west and east. It is jointly coordinated. They’ve designed Nigeria in such a way the common man is divided from the other on religious and ethnic lines but the people that caused this are ONE

Tolling the highways is a good idea for keeping roads well-maintained and to a large extent, safe; the fear we all have is actually seeing/feeling the positive impact and it not being just another scheme to empower their friends in high places who will increase their wealth through the sweat of poor Nigerians. I am interested in the jobs it will create under the private companies, I wish the agreement signed with the private companies can also touch on welfare of the people who will get the direct jobs so that these companies don’t employ people and pay them poorly.

Make sense but increasing any form of tax for whatever scheme while welfare of the citizens remain unchanged will always be bad.

What you fail to realize is Nigeria cannot afford to solve it’s problems through privatization. Comparing Nigeria to the West is simply folly. Government should provide basic, social and infrastructural amenities for its citizens here. This has to be done transparently. That’s the only way Nigeria would work.

But guess what? Since independence, the next government has been worse than the previous. There has been no continuity and clear irresponsibility. Private solutions will never be solutions for government inadequacies. Especially when there’s no difference between the government and the private sector oligarchs.

The economy being run in Nigeria is only making the rich richer at the expense of the poor. That will never be sustainable for a country that lacks capital. I’m not even complaining about this government as this as being a norm since forever. Nigerians need to organize and demand more from the government. Power should always belong to the people and not the government in Nigeria. That should be our reality
