CAN I EVER BE RICH?! Owolabi's name which means 'wealth was born' is very far from the reality dot com that he finds himself; perhaps 'poverty was born'.He could not just understand why and how things fell apart. 'Owoblow' as he had been nicknamed was standing inside a noisy public bus called 'molue' in lagos. Alas! The noise from co-commuters that have turned to political argumentators didn't bother him as his mind had travelled; his mother would call it 'emi iya alaro'. What was he thinking this time? Money! He was not just making headway. Had it been he was the only one in this mess, it would have been better. He pitied his understanding, beautiful and submissive wife. But normally, no one would expect Darasimi, his only son to understand the economic situation of his dad when his belly ache for hunger. Their situation had worsen of recent as there had not been toothpaste to brush their teeth. And his wife had to cut already used toothpaste tube for their son to use. Pathetic isn't it? In our nation today, financial situation of many is not too different from this even the working class are included as many are involved in disguised employment though they could manage to pay thier bills but what a life...living for the bills! The easiest route many are taking, graduates included, is to blame the government, the rich monopolistic nature, lack of capital, corruption, everything except for oneself. Yes, there could be point in it but yet, it's a cheap score point. It is quite unfortunate that people and things you are shifting the blame to can not do much to help you even if they are under obligation to do so; HELP YOURSELF! Then, when you must have done so that you will realise that people you're looking upto are even dependent on you. For instance, government would give sigh of relief when you are gainfully employed, at least you are out of their list of 'grown up dependent adult'. Where to begin is taking time off your numerous worries and away from every form of noise from within and outside. Calm your nerves, think straight! Many people could endure being trapped under a collapsed building for five days than shutting themselves off noises and think deep for proper planning for five minutes. THINK! Till you have solutions you can act on. To be continued.... |
PUSH! At the instruction of the doctor on duty, my sister was strolling up and down the reception aisle before she would be called to delivery room. With additional instruction from my mum that she should pray as she strolled, she increased her pace. One would think she was to be a substitute for a red carded goal keeper against Messi led Barcelona; she looked so scared! Would this doctor and my mum stopped this drama, the reception had already been turned to 'ipade ayo' (a popular church service for pregnant women in my area). Finally, the drama was over! I watched her departed for the labour room. Alas! After what seemed like eternity, i faintly heard the doctor saying; PUSH! What brought about the word push after the warm up and the mini crusade, isn't it suppose to be easy? Years after, having related with medical practitioners, i learnt that SELF-PUSH is inevitable to avoid complication. You've got to push! It's for your own good: push!! That is the best way to save you and your brain child: push!!! Many destinies are tied to your push: PUSH! Permit me to be your doctor here: PUUSSHHH! For how long will you be afraid of failure? Implement those ideas now, no time. Other pregnant people are waiting for your own push to motivate them. Push that CV to appropriate quarters. Push your idea to the spotlight. Don't give another excuse why you've not executed your dream business. Honestly, you are making effort but the fear of unknown or thought that you may possibly fail engulfed you. Unfortunately, we tied all our problems to raising capital for business; i know people who started life with money other than theirs simply by selling their ideas. Only that you're not pushing. Come on, push! Yes! The baby was delivered. My sister smiled as they wheeled her out to ward, to delight of all perhaps with exception of those who felt hospital shouldn't be turned to mini church. We are waiting to celebrate your success but first the labour room beckons... Odunmorayo Olalekan An author and speech writer. BBM PIN: 7B2788AA >For purplethoughtsnow..com |

STATE AND CAPITAL I was asked to teach a pupil during third term holiday. She's a very smart kid but her mother was tired of seeing her in second position consistently and she believed her daughter could get used to playing second fiddle and that might affect her in life...some educated rich parents could be funny. Cynthia's headmaster and class teacher commented on her report card every term that she's brilliant and could do more but she talked too much. From my book shelf i picked Ben Carson, John Mason, John Maxwell, Myles Munroe. I drafted motivation curriculum, in addition to the routine learning to help her belief, that greatness is possible and could be sustained. But i nearly ran into trouble when i asked her to recite Nigeria's state and capital. She gave me you-think-i-don't-know look. I stopped her half-way, I was confused, half aloud, i said 'where is Gongola state'. She replied, 'Gongo what! Uncle there's nothing like that and my class teacher can't be wrong'. From her bag, she pulled out an exercise book where it was printed and before i would disgrace myself further, i told her to forget it but her sanguine nature continued to push her as she whispered to me; 'you mean you don't know state and...' 'shut up and listen!' i barked. Isn't it funny that many adults don't know ground had shifted beneath them and are due to un-learn and re-learn? Many can't beat their chest to have read any book in particular since their graduation: i wonder what separate them from my unlettered granny. We always assume we know whereas, assumption is the lowest level of knowledge. We under-play our states and lay emphasis on capital. Mathematicians can't be proud of how we have misused approximation. We are far from being accurate about the capital because we don't really know our state. 'Oh, if i can just lay my hands on two million dollar, dirhams, cedis, or naira...' many would say. If you probe the dreamers, you would know that they had not done their home work on how the money would be utilised to better their lives. I believe so strongly that power to attract capital or solution is in knowing your state. Your financial, health, marriage, spiritual state should not be joked with; they are states that can make or mar you and ascertaining their current levels gives your budget perfection. CAPITAL IS NOT THE FIRST THING YOU NEED TO KNOW OR SEEK BUT THE CURRENT STATES. 'One more thing' i said as she was packing her books. 'your mum must not learn about this' 'she won't uncle, but can we close early on fridays so i can see my soap opera?' 'Soap opera ko, lux soap ni.' That's kind of bargain life throws at us when we don't know our current states and forging ahead becomes climbing Nepal's Mount Everest: the highest mountain. hmmmm. in some quarters, it's believed that lord lugard marriage was useless. it's largely true. i am not tribalistic. i have successful igbos as friends. i never related with them as igbo but true nationalist and enlightened citizens of our world. nigerians are just too tribalistic. do you know that in a state people still say they are sidelined from affairs. every tribe has its strength and weakness which i am not ready to point out here. God bless your struggle but don't be used by someone who will put his family in safe haven and endanger your future. consider pros and cons before you follow a cause. I'm a Nigerian and she will work and walk in my life time and i will be part of the success. |
i am just thirty-one years of age, which shows that i had never been conceived at all during the civil war, but as a reader, i read different accounts of the war. The one that painted the picture with less bias was the great Chinua Achebe's THERE WAS A COUNTRY. The book made me feel i was part of the real war but was it so? far from it. Well, you may reason that it is act and art of cowardice to cow in biafra agitation because we don't want to die for what we believe so strongly yet i wish the young bloods are asked of their age before making agitation for something that nearly wiped off the igbos. Even the brave Sir Ojukwu had to throw in towel. i wonder this time who could be stronger to continue the struggle(definitely not Kanu). As a young kid, i went for holiday with my elder brother in accient town of ife. My dad had hardly reached Lagos when Ife/Modakeke war began. there was no GSM so to reached him back would mean sending letter to his postal address. So, we were stuck in a place called 'iyekere' (where my granny had her house) less than five minutes trek to modakeke town. The war is better than be part of. my seventy year old granny saved us by using local parlance with the rioters as we were trying to escape to my aunt's husband house at 'Ojoyin'-still not far from the border. one saturday evening, the residence pastor of CAC Ojoyin was reviewing bible for sunday service when we saw him fell down where we were playing football due to the confidence that the soldiers' presence had restored. Alas, it was stray bullet. To cut the long story short, it was not a palatable experience how much more biafra war that could be bigger than that. Respect to my late Oba, Sijuwade but i would like to recall that his son was in London yet there was announcement that irrespective of your age, as long as you were brave, come to palace to recieve gun and charm: off you go to the war front. (omo olomo la n ran nise de toru toru) meaning, it is easier to send son of another man on a delicate errand than yours. youths of our great nation, irrespective of your affiliation, don't be pushed by an angry, selfish man to follow his cause. you are far wiser than that. i am subject to enlightenment but in my opinion Bia was coined from igbo word which come while i strongly believe that Fra would have something to do with Franca's name (the adorable wife of our great Ikemba though he would deny it if you wake him up. And my plea, if you did not witness last war personally, relocate to sambisa forest for few months or syria before you call for another civil war. dear youth before biafra, what is your age? |
austinsmat:please, which truth? perhaps, he would tell us apc killed Alams son in dubai. it's a stated principle...you or your unborn generation will reap what you are doing. i'm not mocking him as we'll all die (except if you're Enoch) but we should be good and less greedy. |

THOUGHTLESS MOVEMENT. Why did you move? What warrant those moves? What would likely be the outcome of that move? Did you think before you moved? Those are familiar questions from my chess coach in my university days whenever i made wrong move without considering consequences. He would shout; 'OAU and Lautech boys would finish you in the coming competition this way...BUT WHY DO YOU LOVE MOVING?' It's human nature, isn't it? Moving, whether fruitful or not. Barber's chair fits the illustration. Movement with no distance covered. Why are we restless? So many people prefer to take alternative route that could cost them extra minutes than to endure a five minutes traffic light imposed jam. It's in our blood! But if we are to make headway in life, then we need to, as a matter of necessity, unlearn this habit and some others that could hinder us from making indelible impact in our world. The world's greatest Teacher said, 'who would want to build a house and not FIRST SIT TO COUNT THE COST'. It means, a reasonable thing to do is to think before you act so that an ordinary 'pawn' would not slaughter your 'queen' and made your king vulnerable just as we have it in chess...you know what? We are talking of life issue here that is far important, so don't joke with proper planning of your finance, health, home, investment, job related issues, spirituality, etc It is too casual of you to avoid thinking on paper. There's power of attraction when you write your goals before taking decision. Don't run on emotion or guess work. Be exact in decision making or at least close to it. It takes sacrifice (which happens to be a decision on its own too) to get anything meaningful done. You can do better than wasting expensive data bundle on chatting and reading what celebrities are doing with their money without figuring how to make yours. Procrastination robs destiny but don't dash out in a mad rush that has become part of us without considering consequences. Lastly, for our nation to have good road, rail system; before we can celebrate uninterrupted power supply, before our legal, education systems and all other aspects of our national life can work, everyone must be taking quality decisions especially the leaders. Running an effective and efficient government is beyond doing your routine work. There must always be flashes of brilliance that are acted upon and without using such avenue to enrich our pockets. The me-and-my-family-first mentality will continue to make resources of all skew toward few through stealing. The federal character without theft character should be practised, then our identity will be valuable wherever we find ourselves in the world. God bless our fatherland. i appreciate God. my friend was on board. it was naija factor that started the drama. phcn took light as the plane was taxiing. and it was communicated to the pilot to use alternative route and due to poor lighting, the plane scratched another plane. the passengers were disembarked. and lodged in hotel around ikeja. as i am writing, they are still there. edosah safe trip. jig for life |
i love this thread. thanks op. i had challenges when i wrote my first book. i followed all the above rules. i will also advise that the editing should be done by at least three professionals. mine was done by my pastor who had authored 6 books and two of my friends who hate seeing error. i arranged two well organised launcheon with great people in attendance. i made 100% ROI from the two events; first at my alma mata second in lagos. money matters but the platform that the book gave me was more pleasing and a lot of thank u msg from people i have never come across. |

NIGERIA... AND HERE WE GO! He stepped forward to pick the ball and take the last penalty kick and if he scored Chelsea would be champions. As a fan of the club, Didier Drogba's short walk from centre circle where other players were standing in a tensed state seemed eternity to me, knowing fully well that Bayern munich were playing at home cum imagery of John Terry in the same situation against Manchester and seeing Manuel Neuer in goal, confidently looking at Didi added to my tension. I wished the referee would just say 'Didi' whether you kick the ball into the net or not, i would count it as goal' but that won't be...i turned to a prayer warrior. And then there we go, he kicked it and it was a GOAL!!! Then i felt relieved and jubilate wildly, putting off my cloth and rolling it in the air...how sweet a victory can be! And now, Nigeria here we go! Is this the victory we have longed for? Can president Buhari calm his nerve and hit corruption even if it would affect his guys? Can he deliver in four years, a nation that will have light 24/7? Can we have jobs for our teeming youths and enabling environment to do business? Can we have formal, informal and financial education for the populace? Can those refinerie start working? Can we... Can we... And can we? Our problem is much that the requests will continue flowing. As we see you as the help and change that God sends to us, we know it will take time before we are totally healed from the selfish mentality that have befallen our leaders in the past (and mind you sir, as some of those players that witnessed Terry slipped against United were still present in the team when Drogba was about to kick the ball, so are many of the corrupt leaders even in your party). You have our prayers for long life and self will to face the challenges. After that match, Drogba was addressed as a legend and that you can also be, not for winning the election after three failed attempt but because you deliver your own people and set standard for your successors. And here we go! Another victory for me, not at Chelsea but for the land that birthed me, my father land. Odunmorayo Olalekan Author&speech writer. olalekanchams.oo@gmail.com |
May i please ask the great nairalanders Hon. Farouk Lawan's whereabout. the young man was perceived by many who knew him as people's voice in the lower chamber but the act and art of wearing dollars enclosed cap did not do him well. perhaps, Femi Otedola's smarted. As election is about to take place and being unusual of someone like him, i ought to have been hearing from him, even be a contestant. please where is he? |
