Troops from the Nigerian Army on Thursday January 3, 2019 raided a Boko Haram hideout in Gawa and Boskoro villages, Mafa local government area of Borno state.


They recovered 3 gas cylinders, 3 pieces of 36 hand grenade, 4 dane guns, and 26 rounds of anti-aircraft ammunition and a set of bow and arrows. They also rescued three women at Boskoro who were later handed over to the Internally Displaced Persons camp officials at Dikwa.


A statement by Army spokesperson, Brigadier General Sani Usman, said the operation was carried out by the troops in conjunction with members of the Civilian JTF. He said:

"Based on credible intelligence, troops of 112 Task Force Battalion, 22 Brigade, Operation Lafiya Dole, along with some members of the Civilian JTF, today, Thursday 3rd January 2019, embarked on fighting patrol to suspected Boko Haram terrorists hideouts around Gawa and Boskoro villages, Mafa local government area of Borno state.

In the course of the patrol, the troops discovered and destroyed Boko Haram terrorists hideout.

They also neutralised 6 terrorists in the area. During the search on the hideout before destruction, the troops recovered three pieces of 36 hand grenade, four dane guns, and 26 rounds of anti-aircraft ammunition.

They also recovered 3 gas cylinders and a set of bow and arrows. The gallant patrol team also rescued three women at Boskoro who were later handed over to the Internally Displaced Persons camp officials at Dikwa.

Impressed by their performance, the Theatre Commander, Operation Lafiya Dole, Major General BA Akinroluyo, commended the troops. The commendation was relayed to them by the Acting General Officer Commanding 7 Division and Commander Sector 1, Operation Lafiya Dole, Brigadier General Bulama Biu.

He further enjoined them to be more daring and clear any suspected Boko Haram terrorists hideout."

Plateau State Governor, Simon Lalong has granted pardon to four prisoners serving various jail terms in the state in the spirit of the New Year.

He made the disclosure in a statement signed by Mark Longyen, Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity on Tuesday in Jos. He said:

The decision was taken after consultation with the State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy. It is in exercise of the powers conferred on the governor under Section 212 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended).

The sentences of three of the convicts were commuted to absolute pardon, while the fourth convict had his life sentence commuted to 21 years imprisonment.

The convicts Abdullahi Musa, Rev. Samson Bisat and Chikwu Anadi were granted absolute pardon while Emmanuel Ochiba who was sentenced to life imprisonment has been commuted to 21 years jail term.

Lalong called on the people of the state and the Nation at large to commit the year 2019 to sobriety, penance and forgiveness. He urged them to pray fervently for divine intervention in the affairs of Plateau and Nigeria.

Intersex people in Germany can now register as the third category on birth certificates, passports and other official documents.

The new law passed in December now allows Intersex people in Germany to legally identify themselves as a third gender.

People who do not fit the biological definition of male or female can now choose the category “diverse” on official documents, but will need a doctor’s certificate to register.

Austria’s constitutional court made a similar ruling to Germany’s in June, while Australia, New Zealand, Malta, India and Canada have all passed measures to redress issues facing intersex citizens.

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics(ASUP) says they will not be ending its ongoing strike action.


The nation president of ASUP said the continuation of the strike is because the FG has failed to release the N15 billion revitalisation fund promised to Nigerian polytechnics in 2017.

The national president of ASUP, Usman Dutse, while speaking in an interview said in the 2009 agreement that the Federal Government had promised about N603 billion to polytechnics but it was agreed in 2017, that due to paucity of funds N15 billion should be released as commitment to the agreement. Dutse said:


"In the report of the NEEDS assessment carried out, the government initially promised to release N603bn to polytechnics for revitalisation.

Because of the long delay, the prices of items changed and there were new public polytechnics established, so the money was reviewed to over N800 billion. At the time there was no clear roadmap by the government on how to allocate the money to the institutions in tranches.

But in 2017, at the last agreement, the government said it was facing paucity of funds and other economic challenges, therefore it would commit itself to a revalisation fund of N20 billion to universities, N15 billion to polytechnics and N15 billion to colleges of education.

Former Governor of Lagos state and the All Progressives Congress national leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, released a new year message to Nigerians, urging them not to tread backward, but forward as they make voting choices in February.


He released the message on Monday in Lagos, stating that the type of nation Nigerians want is based on the choices they make. The message reads:

"We must enter the New Year and see it as a new day for Nigeria. Thus, I ask you to perform your civic duty to vote with utmost faith, responsibility and the best interest of the country at heart.


We have a choice to make. The choice we make will demonstrate the type of nation we want.

I select the path of forward progress for I have never recommended to myself or to the nation the awkward practice of walking backward.

We must exercise courage and vision. We must continue forward for the sake of this nation and our posterity, we dare not retreat or regress.

Elections will be free and fair. You must add your voice and vote. You must participate in this important exercise of our democratic rights and institutions. We seek to build a better nation. We ask you to join us. In so doing, we give effect to the best of our hopes and aspirations for 2019,

As time ushers in the New Year, we must look back on 2018 with gratitude. We thank God for Nigeria and all that He has done for us.

The nation is on the verge of an election to determine our collective fate, we can either chose to continue forward or return to the old ways that held us back for so long.

Just as 2018 must turn into 2019, we must also continue to move forward. As time cannot proceed backward. Nor should we.

We realise that we still have much to do and far to travel to become the nation we are destined to be. Yet, we must also acknowledge that we have come a long way.

We have made progress and it has at times been difficult, yet we stand with great hope and belief that we shall advance and move this nation forward.

Let us recognise that which has been done this past year. President Buhari has built a foundation for sustainable growth and development, a path for a better future. President Buhari has brought transparency and accountability in the government’s businesses.

The Buhari administration has shown the compassionate side of our traditions and our very nature by constructing a social safety net to assure the poorest among us are not neglected but are cared for as is the right of every human being. It has fed children that they may go to school.

It has trained people that they may acquire a livelihood. It has empowered those who wish to start businesses and employ others. It has helped farmers become more productive so that they may earn more money while better feeding the nation.

For instance, we have recorded significant breakthrough in agriculture with increased local rice production and the attendant reduction in rice importation. These things have been done not to win accolades but because they are the right things for a decent and caring government to do for a decent and good people.

As we move into the New Year, let us be committed to doing our best for Nigeria. I wish you all a wonderful New Year."

The Police Headquarters Asaba (Human Rights Office) arrested the CEO of Esenty security services in Asaba, Delta State who ordered her thugs to brutalize her gateman for demanding his salary.

The gateman, John, was allegedly beaten up by some thugs hired by his boss, after he requested for his salary.

According to activist Gwamnisu, the founder of Behind Bars Rights Defenders, John had been working for his Madam without pay, but on that fateful day, requested for his salary, only for the woman to unleash her thugs on him. He was allegedly locked up inside the toilet and brutalized.

The case was, subsequently, reported to the police and after many weeks, the boss has been arrested and will soon be charged to court.

According to the Twitter user, he says he can’t report the matter to the police because of the position of the lawyer. He also said his boss is known for his philanderous ways as their former secretary also resigned because of his harrassment.

The video was shot by the European Union in Nigerian as part of a campaign to end gender based violence in Nigeria.


In the video, the little girl narrated how the man named Atuga initially asked her out, raped her and how some people wanted her to lie that it was her father that had been raping her.

Some reports say there was panic after pepper spray was fired inside the club in the town of Corinaldo, near the eastern coastal city of Ancona, leaving 6 dead and dozens injured.


The Lanterna Azzurra club in Corinaldo on the Adriatic coast where rapper Sfera Ebbasta concert was held had over 1000 people in attendance.


Five of the victims were 14 to 16 years old, while the sixth was a 39-year-old woman who came to the club with her daughter.

The incident took place at about 01:00 (midnight GMT) as Italy began celebrating the Feast of the Immaculate Conception.


The concert had not yet begun when “acrid smell” forced crowds to rush towards the emergency exits. The accident occurred after railings gave way and people began falling off a walkway.


A further 120 people were injured, with about 12 seriously injured. Many of the injured suffered severe bruising while others had broken bones and limbs.

The injured have been taken to hospitals in Senigallia and Ancona. Seven are said to be in intensive care.


The fire service said in a statement on Twitter:

"The cause may have been the dispersal of a stinging substance, the young people fled and trampled over each other. Sadly, six people died and dozens are injured."


A 16-year-old boy who was taken to hospital told newsmen:

"We were dancing and waiting for the concert to start when we smelt this pungent odour.

We ran to one of the emergency exits but we found it blocked, the bouncers told us to go back."

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says President Buhari’s refusal to sign the electoral amendment might cause a political unrest and violence in 2019. They claimed that the President is avoiding a free and fair election.


The PDP’s Presidential Campaign Organization (PPCO) has urged the National Assembly to override President Muhammadu Buhari’s refusal to sign the amendment of the Electoral Act.

President Buhari who has refused to sign the bill given to him by both the Senate and the House of Representatives for the fourth time, says he cannot sign the Electoral Bill into law at this time because the country was preparing for the 2019 general elections.


He says he can only assent to it after next year’s elections, adding that if done now, it would end up causing uncertainty and crisis in the country.

In a statement released on Friday, December 7, signed by the spokesman, Kola Ologbondiyan, states that President Buhari’s action was capable of injecting crisis into the electoral process and ultimately scuttle the conduct of the 2019 general elections. The statement reads:

"President Buhari’s repeated refusal to sign amendments passed to check rigging in the election, raises issues of his sincerity of purpose and has the capacity to trigger political unrest and violence, which can, in turn, truncate our hard-earned democracy.

The PPCO invites Nigerians to note that this is the fourth time President Buhari is withholding assent on the amendment, without any cogent reason following his rejection by Nigerians.

Nigerians can recall how the Buhari presidency plotted to plunge the 2019 elections into a needless controversy by delaying the submission of the election budget to the National Assembly, presenting it at the time the legislators were commencing their annual vacation and asking for virement of funds already approved for development projects, instead of sending a fresh supplementary budget for the election.

It is unfortunate that Mr President, in his desperation to hold on to power, has resorted to taking steps that are capable of destabilizing our nation, just because the people are resolute in voting him out of office democratically.

It is also instructive to note that President Buhari is mortally afraid of the amendments because they essentially checked the All Progressives Congress (APC) rigging plans, including the use of underage and alien voters, vote-buying, alteration of results and manipulation of voter register; for which the APC and the Buhari Presidency have been boasting of winning the 2019 elections.

While urging the National Assembly to save our democracy and forestall an imminent electoral crisis, the PPCO also charges all political parties, other critical stakeholders and Nigerians in general, to rise in the interest of our nation and demand the entrenching of rules and processes that will guarantee the conduct of free, fair and credible elections, as nothing short of that would be accepted."

Genevieve Purinton, 88-year-old, gave birth to Connie Moultroup in 1949 at a hospital in Indiana. After awhile she was informed by a staff that her baby had died.


The daughter, Connie Moultroup, 69-year-old, was taken to an orphanage and later adopted by a couple from Santa Barbara, California. But her adoptive parents died when she was 5-years-old.


Her adoptive mother died of cancer, and her adoptive father remarried but the woman was very abusive to Connie. Her adoptive father was later diagnosed with a heart condition.


Bonnie Chase, Connie’s daughter gave her mother an Ancestry.com DNA testing kit for Christmas last year. she has ever received.

Connie said:

"It took me a while to use it, but when I finally got the results I went from having only three known relatives (a daughter and two grandchildren), to 1,600 relatives. I was floored."


She got in touch with a distant cousin. Who led her to her mother. Connie got her mom’s information and sent her a card with contact numbers, and on September 8, her mother called. She said:

"I told her my mother’s name was Genevieve Purinton, and my cousin said, “Oh, that’s my aunt. And she’s still alive, living on her own.

I couldn’t believe it. I was going to meet my mother.

I was at church that day, and I never want to leave early, but that day I did. Literally, 20 minutes after getting home, my mother calls."

The two agreed to meet each other, and on Monday, the two finally reunited at Purinton’s home in a retirement community in Tampa, Florida.

"I met my mother and my cousin in person, and we cried. It was just a crying fest
