Car Talk / Re: Hybrid Cars In Nigeria - Assessment, Performance & Maintainance by Ricmayak1: 9:39pm On May 28, 2015 |
Lexusgs430: "(probably because my right foot, is lead induced)." You now see abi? As I earlier mentioned, but did not go into detail; Hope your mechanic does not service your hybrids with 20w50 oil? If so, run! Hope your e-CVT has not been overfilled with transmission fluid? some mechanics refill through a wrong hole. If so, run! watch tire change I.e differences between stock tires and new ones. It may determine inflation pressure that affects fuel economy. If you install new tires with higher max inflation pressure, kindly increase your tyre pressure. low pressure causes tyre sidewall flex, increases rolling resistance thereby increasing fuel consumption. Stock tires also have low rolling resistance in contrast to new ones. Check aged HO2S and spark plugs. In fact, kazeems will remove iridium spark plugs that can ignite lean mixtures easily snd replace with conventional copper plugs. Run! Hope kazeems have not gutted CAT. It's detrimental to hybrid engines becsuse of intake/exhaust valve overlaps. Hybrid thermostat should be padlocked and be made a no-go area to a Kazeem. Some hybrids are happier with higher octane fuel. ..........plenty plenty other reasons. Regards. |

Lexusgs430: I have a camry hybrid as I write. I used to think same as you do because I am used to driving between 140km/h to 190km/h until I painfully tested about 100km/hr between Abuja and Kaduna this month. I was amazed at my findings (almost specs MPG value). The highway MPG values released by the manufacturer is true but not under aggressive driving conditions. These values are higher for hybrids than similar conventional cars. Some people (myself inclusive) have had MPG values that surpassed the one quoted by manufacturer by very careful and skillful driving. I think they call it hypermiling...... There are some unique hybrid car driving skills. Note: Bronchure MPG values for conventional cars may not be easily realised too under normal driving conditions we are used to.... so, it is not hybrids alone. There are power train/other issues that can prevent a hybrid ( in fact, any car) from having good highway MPG values (there are special cases for hybrids). The discussion will be lenthy and not within the scope of this thread. I do not mean that in real life, hybrids MPG specs are exactly as they are quoted by manufacturers but in comparison with non-hybrid versions, they have better MPG values even on highways (with lesser margins for highway in contrast to city). Regards. |

Lexusgs430: You are right oga... but not exactly I think. Even on highways, the hybrids are more fuel efficient because of regenerative braking, use of more efficient Atkinson cycle engine, electric power steering (though not for hybrids alone) and e-CVT. The consumption will be identical to that of the conventional engines at very high speeds (with limited coasting/braking) when the batteries are not given the chance to recharge. Hybrids still show remarkable MPG difference at highway speeds close to 100 km/h. You get better MPG values when you use cruise control (not in terrain with hills) or you maintain constant speed rather than constant throttle. What kills hybrid's fuel economy in this part of the world, for distant journeys, is use of AC at low temp settings because of our hot weather which kills MPG. In the west and some other parts of the world with very cold weather, multiple cold starts kills MPG more (due to engine running rich for longer period at cold start due to cold weather). Thanks to the fact that hybrids warm up faster. The difference at highway speeds might be small (depending on average highway speed) & is unnoticed to many, the difference actually exist. Regards. |

Car Talk / Re: 10 Fuel Saving Tips Every Driver Should Know Today!!! by Ricmayak1: 1:47pm On May 26, 2015 |
Hello nairalanders, The use of AC affects fuel consumption. The extent depends on whether one is doing city or highway driving. It increases consumption more when car is driven in the city. Read about hybrid cars. Toyota hybrid economy mode works by reducing AC output, reducing throttle response. It depends on the engine design too..... I wouldn't want to go into details of this. Regards. |

Car Talk / Re: What Would Make The Fuel Consumption Of A Car Shoot Up by Ricmayak1: 10:32pm On May 20, 2015 |
abatically: In addition to this oga; vacuum leak, weak fuel pump, bad fuel pressure regulator, dirty fuel/air filter, faulty knock sensor, exhaust leak, new tires(high rolling resistance), improperly aligned/unbalanced tires, faulty coolant temperature sensor, high engine oil viscousity/overguage, high transmission fluid viscousity/overguage, low octane fuel(especially when knock sensor is faulty), unbalanced injectors, wrong spark plugs, sluggish/bad A/F / O2 sensor, faulty throttle position sensor, wrong ignition timing, valve faults, intake manifold crack, malfunctioning egr, malfunctioning pcv, misaligned pulleys, inadequate d.c battery voltage/corroded or aged electrical connections, clogged exhaust/gutted cat, transmission faults(stucking in lower gears for too long), bad ignition cables/weak ignition coils, driving style(harsh driving), faulty MAF/MAP sensor, bad roads. e still remain o..... I no remember others now. note: some of the above mentioned do not cause drastic rise in fuel consumption. Regards.... 1 Like |
Car Talk / Re: What Could Be Breaking My Front Shock Absorber Springs by Ricmayak1: 11:32am On May 15, 2015 |
If you have changed the dampers (shocks) before, I guess the new ones are too soft for your vehicle's application, causing your spring to oscillate unnecessarily and causing stresses in the spring. Note: Soft springs go with stiffer dampers and vice versa. |
Car Talk / Re: New Engine Consuming Excess Fuel by Ricmayak1: 12:30pm On May 07, 2015 |
Get someone who can analyse datastreams as the vehicle might not throw codes. Chech oxygen sensor, catalyst converter, MAF, coolant temp sensor, large vacuum leak, check timing. Please check if that engine is a sludged engine. Lastly, check accessory drive pulleys for proper installation. Regards. |

Car Talk / Urgent! I Need Toyota Camry Muscle, 4 Cylinders Vvt-i Catalyst Converters. by Ricmayak1: 12:23pm On Apr 20, 2015 |
Hello house. I need a toyota camry muscle 4 cylinders catalytic converters. The cast iron manifold and the smaller one. If I get an affordable price quote, I will need both A/F sensors and oxygen sensors. I will need O2 sensor spacers too. I will prefer a brand new converter, a good fairly used one will be okay too. The cat has been hollowed out and the car with vvt-i consumes fuel alot most likely due to "over-scavenging". It also idles high at about 1,350 rpm & lacks power. Car has been scanned and has "bank 1 sensor 2 voltage low". It's a camry hybrid. I will appreciate inputs in this regard. |

Car Talk / Re: Toyota Camry Hybrid 2009 2AZ Vtt-i Engine Needed by Ricmayak1: 1:04am On Apr 01, 2015 |
@ Sienna I do appreciate your response. The engine is knocking and overheating seriously. The oil in it was seriously diluted with petrol and there was melted metals found when the buttom oil pan was removed. Spark plugs and two ignition coils were bad. Oil, ignition coils, coolant, spark plugs have been replaced but it seems that damage had been done to the engine's internal component(s). I suspect the crankshaft, metals and bearings, as the engine load at idle is close to 60% (Shown on OBD II scanner). please advise..... should I rework or get a used engine? How can I get one and at what cost? Regards. |

Car Talk / Re: Maintenance Tips On Cars. by Ricmayak1: 11:01am On Mar 07, 2015 |
valarinz: many thing can cause the problem. I don't know where to start from. Fuel pump.... fuel Pressure regulator. .... fuel line leakage...... over retarded timing..... crankshaft position sensor..... wrong operating temp (bad coolant temperature sensor, thermostat, bad fan operation. ...).... air leaks..... MAF and/or MAP sensor...... faulty or blocked injector nozzles. ..... misfire due to faulty ignition cable/coil/spark plug.....bad EGR.....faulty valves....... engine with bad compression.... fouled engine oil...... engine running rich (bad operating temp, FPR, leaky injector, bad CTS e.t.c) and others........ If you have the minor things checked and they are okay, it's likely your throttle position sensor from your description of poor acceleration and AC dragging down engine power. BR. 2 Likes |
Car Talk / Re: Direct Connection Of Radiator Fan Is Harmful!!!! by Ricmayak1: 10:36am On Mar 07, 2015 |
captalex: Truely, the thermostat can do that when it is stuck closed. The ideal solution is replacement and not removal. Also note that bad radiator pressure cap can cause it. Always use radiator coolant solution rather than water. it has higher boiling point. BR. 1 Like |
