– The structure of the EPL ‘big four’ has
changed significantly
– ‘Unknown’ Leicester City are on the verge of
claiming the 2015/2016 EPL title
– Liverpool and Chelsea are struggling to finish
among the top ten. The popular saying that ‘Change’ is the only constant thing has definitely applied to the dominance of the notable ‘Big Four’ in the English Premier League. It was a significant feature of the Premier League in the mid-2000s where clubs like Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United are always in the top four positions at the end of each season. It was a routine during this period especially between 2002 and 2009, the ‘Big Four’ dominated the top four spots and consequently qualifying for the UEFA Champions League. In 5 out of 6 seasons from 2003-04 to 2008-09 inclusive, these four clubs feasted on other clubs with Arsenal going as far as winning the league without losing a single game in 2003– 04, the only time it has ever happened in the Premier League. According to Kevin Keegan who was the Newcastle manager in 2008, the ‘Big Four’ dominance posed a big threat to the EPL, adding that it could make the league boring. “This league is in danger of becoming one of the most boring but great leagues in the world.” Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore said in defence: “There are a lot of different tussles that go on in the Premier League depending on whether you’re at the top, in the middle or at the bottom that make it interesting.” However, with the reinforcement of Manchester City and Tottenham just after the end of 2009, there has been gradual shift in the structure of the ‘Big Four’ teams. By the time Sheikh Mansour who bought the club in 2008 for £210million settled with the team and injected lots of cash, Manchester City won the title in the 2011-12 season, becoming the first club outside the ‘Big Four’ to win since 1994-95. And since then the structure of the Big Four has finally changed. However, the most unbelievable feat of the EPL may come up at the end of the 2015/2016 with ‘small rats’ Leicester City thrashing other teams and have lost just three games from their 32 EPL games so far and leading with 69 points. The Foxes are in a position that no one ever thought possible. With the exception of north London, everyone in the entire Britain is willing them over the line, desperate for the underdogs to beat the big boys, something no one would ever imagine. Leicester are now 7 points clear on top of the log with just six games to go and are doing just enough to win. Each of their last four games as at April 3 ended 1 – 0, but grinding out a result week after week is so hard to do. Apart from Arsenal which currently occupy the 3rd position with 58 points, other ‘Big Four’ teams are not in the clique. Liverpool and Chelsea are 9th and 10th respectively with Manchester United in 5th. Totttenham have now improved tremendously and also look good for the title being 2nd on the standings with Manchester City in fourth position. The question is, can Claudio Ranieri’s men win the 2015/2016 season in a spectacular fashion? |

– Eleven million documents of leaked documents reveal how world’s rich and powerful hide their money – James Ibori, who is currently in prison in UK, listed in Panama Papers, the biggest leak of financial data in history – A network of secret offshore deals and vast loans worth $2bn has laid a trail to Russia’s president Vladimir Putin. A huge treasure of secret documents from the notorious Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonseca was made public on April 3, Sunday, revealing an immense web of offshore shell companies used by members of the global elite to evade taxes, hoard money, and skirt economic sanctions. The so-called Panama Papers exposes the offshore holdings of 12 incumbent and former world leaders and discloses how allies of Russian President Vladimir Putin secretly deverted as much as $2 billion through banks and shadow companies. The name of prominent Nigerian politician James Ibori, a former Delta State governor from 1999 to 2007, currently serving time in a UK jail, also appeared in the leaked documents. Ibori pleaded guilty in a London court in 2012 to conspiracy to defraud and money laundering offenses. The ex-governor admitted using his position to corruptly obtain and divert up to $75 million out of Nigeria through a network of offshore companies, while authorities supposed that the total amount he embezzled may have exceeded $250 million. Ibori, who received a 13-year prison sentence, used millions of dollars to support a lavish lifestyle that included six houses in London and a fleet of Range Rovers, Bentleys and Mercedes. Papers show how the Mossack Fonseca has supposedly assisted their clients in laundering money, evade sanctions and tax. The giant leak of confidential documents discloses: – A network of confidential offshore agreements and loans worth £1.4 billion that leads to Putin; – Twelve national leaders, comprising Pakistan’s prime minister, president of Ukraine and the prime minister of Iceland, are among 143 politicians exposed to have offshore accounts, including several dictators; – Six members of the House of Lords, three former Conservative MPs and dozens of donors to British political parties are among those said to have benefited from tax havens; A member of Fifa’s ethics committee, which is alleged to be reforming the organisation, worked as a lawyer for people charged with bribery and corruption. This leakage of documents is even bigger than the amount of data stolen by Edward Snowden in 2013. Snowden will go down in history as one of America’s most consequential whistleblowers, alongside Daniel Ellsberg and Bradley Manning. He is responsible for handing over material from one of the world’s most secretive organisations – the National Security Agency. https://www.naij.com/787111-panamapapers-prominent-nigerian-putin-others-listed-biggest-leak-data.html?source=breaking. |

– Radio Biafra prays for Nnamdi Kanu’s protection – The station is now airing from London – The station was jammed by security operatives in 2015 but is now back on air Following the release that Radio Biafra is now back on the airwaves , a check has revealed that the information being aired on the radio is for confusion to continue to exist in their enemies’ camp. The radio was jammed by Nigeria security operatives in 2015 but the station in now back on air. According to The Cable, the station is live on Tune In, an internet radio airing across the world. Radio Biafra is airing from “30 Sandlings Close, Pilkington Road, London, SE11 3SY England, United Kingdom”. The dominant message on the station is “freedom to Biafra” while a lot of condemnation is put on Nigeria which it describes as a zoo. The anchor who referred to himself as the new deputy director of the radio station complained about the state of power and energy in Nigeria. He assured a caller from Nigeria who complained about the inability to access the station in some parts of the south east in Nigeria that the issue will be examined. “There is no problem with our general platform, we would look into it tomorrow.” “We are not forgetting our leader, Kanu. Lord God almighty, grant our leader protection. Continue to set confusion in the midst of our enemies, grant us total freedom.” In a statement released earlier this week By the Indigenous People Of Biafra, it said in spite of Nigeria’s attempt to stop them, they were back on air. “Right now, we are back on shortwave after Nigerian government spent millions of dollars taxpayers money trying to stop Radio Biafra. “All Biafrans and friends of Biafra can now go to 11600 kHz at 25-meter band to cherish the gospel of truth, Broadcasting time is 8pm London time, 9pm Biafra land time. We are unstoppable because Chukwuka Okike Abiama, Almighty God, is on our side.” Meanwhile, the struggle for the actualisation of a sovereign state of Biafra may have received a massive boost following the reported visit of a Phillippian envoy to Imo state. The Phillippian Senate president’s aide, Lady Cynthia Esgurrna Touraha, was a guest of Imo Bilie Initiative (IBI) a non-governmental organization that is also strongly behind the Indigenous People of Biafra, (IPOB) getting justice in an Owerri high court. https://www.naij.com/785903-radio-biafra-read-message-preached-biafra-broadcaster.html?source=index_main |

Secretary to the Government of the Federation, David Lawal and some other people in President Muhammadu Buhari’s government have been accused of being behind Senate president, Bukola Saraki’s ordeal. They have been accused of masterminding the plot to remove Saraki from office and have vowed not to allow the matter be resolved, Vanguard reports. The chairman, Senate committee on navy, Senator Isa Misau (APC Bauchi Central), who spoke to journalist on Thursday, March 31, said the solution to Saraki’s trial was political but, some people in Buhari’s government were stalling the solution. He said: “ Despite President Muhammadu Buhari’s commendable position not to interfere, there are some hardliners within this government who are still fueling this matter and are, as a matter of fact, interfering with the trial.” According to him, some elders in the Senate recently met with the SGF in order to find a lasting solution to the problem but he turned their request. “They were surprised by some of his utterances and they reported back to some senators that he vowed that this matter will not be resolved until Saraki goes down for spiting the party leadership,” he said. Speaking on insinuations that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), would take over the Senate if Saraki was removed, he said APC senators would do everything possible to defeat the opposition if it came to producing another Senate president. Misau said: “What my friend, distinguished Senator Peter Nwaoboshi, said will not happen because the APC caucus of the Senate will under no circumstances allow Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki to be removed. “But I understand the larger implication of what Nwaoboshi is saying because our majority in the Senate is very slim which means we need to be careful and that is why we need to find a political solution to this crisis and this trial of the Senate President at the Code of Conduct Tribunal.” He noted that 99 percent of the senators are solidly behind the Senate president, adding that several efforts have been made and are still being made to resolve the matter. Saraki is facing trial at the Code of Conduct Tribunal, for a 13-count charge bordering on alleged corruption and false declaration of assets while he was the governor of Kwara state. Some political leaders in the north-central zone alleged that Saraki’s trial was an abuse of the legal system in the country by the chairman of the CCT, Justice Danlami Umar, calling on Buhari to halt the alleged injustice being meted out to the Senate president. https://www.naij.com/784650-senator-reveals-buharis-govt-responsible-sarakis-trial.html?source=index_main |

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has alleged that the All Progressives Congress (APC) now controls the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The Punch reports that Uche Secondus who is the deputy national leader of the PDP made this allegation on Wednesday, March 30 in Abuja. The PDP leader said the piecemeal release of the Rivers rerun election was evident that INEC was getting instruction from the APC. Secondus expressed concern in the ability of Prof. Mahmood Yakubu who is the chairman of INEC to do his work well and independently citing the Kogi, Bayelsa dn Rivers rerun elections as examples of his perceived incompetence. “Now in Rivers, because the PDP won all the elections despite the intimidation by the military, the results are being released piecemeal because the APC has failed woefully in all the constituencies. “It is apparent that the commission has become a department in the APC. The commission is being controlled by the APC. The commission has lost its independence and we have empirical evidence on this.” “They haven’t fixed a date for rerun because of the APC. INEC is now being supervised by the leadership of the APC and the Buhari administration. “They are no longer independent and we are losing confidence in INEC. In the Federal Capital Territory, election date was announced but suddenly, because they knew the APC was going to lose, they postponed the election after we had spent money and time. “All these show that INEC is now a parastatal of the APC. The danger is that this current leadership that will conduct the general elections in 2019 has been compromised. “The forthcoming Edo and Ondo states’ governorship elections are in danger. With what happened in Rivers, Nigeria is in danger. “There may be no election in 2019 with the way INEC is conducting itself as a parastatal of the APC.” However, INEC denied the claim that it was taking instruction from APC especially in reference to the release of the result of Rivers rerun election. Mr. Nick Dazang who is the commission’s deputy director of voter education and publicity explained that as at the time the election in Rivers was suspended, it was already at different stages. “As of the time of the suspension of further action by the commission, the exercise was at different stages. “For example, the elections had been concluded in some constituencies with the declaration of results and return of winners by the respective Returning Officers; results declared and/or returns made under duress or by unauthorised persons; collation had been concluded but no declaration or return made; voting had been concluded and collation was ongoing but yet to be concluded; voting concluded but collation yet to commence; and / or no voting at all or voting commenced but was disrupted before conclusion.” Meanwhile, the PDP won three House of Representatives seat and one state house of assembly seat in the just concluded parliamentary rerun elections in Rivers. https://www.naij.com/783125-controversy-pdp-makes-serious-allegations-concerning-inec-apc-relationship.html?source=index_main |
Former minister of aviation and the director of
publicity, Peoples Democratic Party
Presidential Campaign Organisation, Femi Fani-
Kayode, have berated President Muhammadu
Buhari for keeping silent over the killings
perpetrated by Fulani herdsmen.
Mr Fani-Kayode, who was once a member of
the ruling party, All Progressive Congress
(APC) asked the president to openly condemn
the Fulani herdsmen who he described as the
President’s kinsmen. He stated this in his
weekly article article titled, ‘Of tyrants, martyrs
and heroes’.
“You should openly condemn the heinous
activities of your kinsmen, the Fulani militants
and herdsmen,” Fani-Kayode said.
He said if the All Progressives Congress-led
Federal Government continued to persecute its
perceived enemies, a national rebellion was
inevitable.
“It is with the foregoing in mind that we must
examine and critically analyse the performance
of the Buhari administration. I have nothing
personal against President Buhari and, as he
knows, I have the utmost respect for his office.
“We must rid ourselves of our fears and speak
the bitter truth. And that truth is as follows: If
you want your country to remain together you
do not demonise former President Goodluck
Jonathan and leading members of the PDP and
attempt to break them, humiliate them and
destroy their legacy.
“The more our government persecutes its
perceived enemies, the more it is sowing the
seeds of disintegration in our country. The
more they oppress and attempt to intimidate
those they seek to silence and subjugate, the
more they engender anger, rebellion, alienation,
enmity and division.”
He said the President must, in the general
interest, stop moves to silence the opposition
‘with sensational and baseless allegations and
lies’.
Fani-Kayode also took a swipe at the
president’s special adviser on media and
publicity, Mr Femi Adesina, who said that
Nigerians should hold vandals sabotaging the
nation’s pipelines responsible for the lack of
electricity in the country.
“I do not believe in violence and neither do I
call for or support the idea of an armed
struggle. I am a man of peace and like Sir
Winston Churchill, England’s greatest Prime
Minister once said, I believe ‘jaw jaw is better
than war’. I do not subscribe to the logic of
force, I believe in the force of logic.
“However, when a people are pushed up
against a wall and when a government has as
its primary objective the silencing and
cowering of the opposition and the destruction
and humiliation of leading opposition figures,
things begin to change very quickly,” he added.
Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari has
reiterated that his administration is poised to
break all economic barriers and set Nigeria
free from poverty.
Buhari said this before jetting out of the country
to the united states of America yesterday,
March 29 at the Eighth Bola Tinubu Colloquium
in Abuja.

There is brewing tension in Warri, Delta state over reports that Tompolo’s kinsman was killed by a Naval officer. The Herald reports that there is rising tension in Warri, Delta state after it emerged that officers of the Nigerian navy killed a sand scooper in the region. The incident which occurred in ex-militant leader, Tompolo’s hometown, Gbaramatu, is said to be threatening the peace of the community after the sand scooper was shot dead on Thursday, March 24. According to reports, the men of the Nigerian Navy were deployed to the area following renewed vandalization of oil installations and the victim, Bernard Pius, was allegedly killed at a jetty in Tebujor Okpelama community in Tompolo’s hometown. The people are not taking the incident with a pinch of salt as they believe that the fragile peace which had returned to the community is now under threat as Tebujor Okpelama, the community chairman lamented. He said: “The incident happened at about 10pm Thursday night. Pius was scooping sand and it is a normal commercial activity at such quiet time when fishermen also ply their trade. The victim was alerted by folks that his sand boat on a 40 horsepower engine at the Jetty was drifting. “He then rushed back and was pulling it back ashore with another boat. That was the point Izonfade patrolled in with other colleagues in a gunboat. After shooting and killing him he moved into the community bragging about the act and threatening to shoot another person if he does not get gratification. “He was offered N5000 before he joined his colleagues in the waiting gunboat and they disappeared, leaving us to mourn our dead. Incidentally, the shooter is an Ijaw man we initially see as one of us, but he and his colleagues have been terrorizing us. The officer must be brought to book or we will take to self- help.” Chief Godspower Gbenekama, the Bebenowei (Chief Mobilizer) of Gbaramatu kingdom also decried the killing, and has called on the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government to proffer a lasting solution to the unrest in the region. Earlier this week, Tompolo was arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in absentia over alleged N35 billion fraud. According to Vanguard, Tompolo was arraigned alongside former boss of Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, (NIMASA) Patrick Akpobolokemi, Global West Vessel Ltd, Odimiri Electrical Ltd, Kime Engozu, Boloboere Property and Estate Ltd, Rex Elem, Destre Consult Ltd, Gregory Mbonu, and Captain Warredi Enisuoh. https://www.naij.com/778198-trouble-looms-warri-navy-kills-tompolos-kinsman.html?source=index_main

Ibrahim Yusuf, a father whose daughter, Hawanat Adebanke Yusuf is missing has pleaded with President Muhammadu Buhari to look into the case of his missing daughter as contrary to report, she is not a wayward girl and still a virgin. Hawanat and her friend, Nasirat Oyeyemi who were undergraduate students at Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria disappeared from school in February 2016 after they went to buy some food items at Sabon-Geri market in the city. According to Vanguard, Yusuf who lived in Lagos said as soon as he heard of the disappearance of his 25 year old daughter and her friend, he went to Kaduna with his son. He said: “Both Hawanat and Nasirat live in Queen Amina girls hostel, ABU, Zaria. On Sunday February 6th, 2016, at about 4pm, the two girls told their room-mates that they were going to buy some food items at Sabon Geri market, very close to their school. To the dismay of their colleagues, both friends did not return that same day. The room mates felt that they could have gone to see their relations hoping that they would return for lectures the following day Monday but, unfortunately, they did not return. Their colleagues were therefore worried and they began looking for our contacts in Zaria. When they contacted our relations in Zaria, it was discovered that the girls did not come to them and this heightened the suspicion that the girls might be missing. ‘’My relation in Zaria called to inform me about the development. On Tuesday morning, I embarked on a journey with my son, Ismail, to Kaduna and we met Nasirat’s father at the campus security post. We narrated our story to the security men at the post who sent one of them to go with us to Samaru Police station, very close to the school. We narrated the incident to the Divisional Police Officer and also asked him if it was possible to make a report at MTN office so that they could be traced through their phones. The DPO however asked us not to do so, saying that it was likely the girls eloped with their male friends. He later advised us to take the case to Kaduna State Security office in Zaria. When we got there, the officer in charge collected some information from us and promised to get back to us. “Later, we were advised to seek the assistance of the Muslim community in the school. We met the President of Muslim Medical Students Association and other students. They were very compassionate, they asked questions about our daughters which we obliged them, while they prayed and advised us to pray for our children’s safe return. They later led us to the Vice Chancellor’s Office who confirmed that he received a report about the missing students and assured us that he would do everything possible to locate their whereabout. He later referred us to the Chief Security officer who informed that the school had already compiled all the necessary information that will assist in the search which will be sent to Kaduna State Security. Since then, we’ve been keeping in touch with them but till date, we’ve not heard any news about them.” “Hawanat is a decent girl. The statement by the DPO that the girls might have eloped with male friends is not true. I swear with my life that my daughter is still a virgin. She is religious and was not the wayward type. She is my daughter and I know her very well. My daughter is the assistant class representative in her department. She takes her studies seriously. I wonder what she could be going through now. May God guide her wherever she is. Shedding tears, he added:“We have spent all we have trying to locate our daughter. We have visited so many places and every effort proved abortive. This incident happened since February, the police and other security agencies assured us that they are alive yet, they are no where to be found. I don’t know what to do any more. When my wife heard the news, she was devastated and has been ill. I wish I know the situation my daughter is going through right now.” Oyeyemi Amisu who is the father of the Nasirat said his daughter was not a troublesome girl and would not have eloped with a man. “Nasirat is a hard-working girl. She has always been guided by the dictates of her religion. She has never been a troublesome girl and I am bothered because I trust what my daughter can do. Contrary to what my daughter will never elope with a male friend. Since her disappearance, there has been confusion in the house. I cannot concentrate on my job any longer.” We are therefore calling on President, Mohammadu Buhari, the governor of Kaduna state, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, the Inspector- General of police and all other security agencies in the country to intervene. We are appealing to them to please use their good offices to trace the whereabouts of our daughters. We believe that with their intervention, we will surely welcome our daughters back to us” https://www.naij.com/778089-swear-daughter-still-virgin-father-pleads-president-buhari.html?source=index_main

Editor’s note: Isiaka Busari aka Mighty Joe is known to be one of the most violent armed robbers, a criminal who unleashed boundless terror on many Nigerians in 1970s. Emmanuel A. Walter from Lagos in this piece examines who he was and what did he do that his name was associated with so much notoriety. Isiaka Busari aka Mighty Joe How Mighty Joe became the defacto king of the underground Shortly after the notorious kingpin of armed robbery in Nigeria, Ishola Oyenusi, was executed, his second in command, Isiaka Busari, better known as Mighty Joe, took over the scene and became the defacto king of the underground. Nigeria was still coming out of the pangs of the civil war and with the death of Oyenusi, they thought the era of violent crimes had been nipped in the bud but little did they know that another hoodlum would spring up and become deadlier. In Mighty Joe’s gang were ex-soldiers who were demobilised and with their knowhow in the handling of guns and other deadly weapons, they held the nation, particularly the South West, to ransom, robbing and killing with reckless abandon. Mighty Joe was even deadlier than Oyenusi and was known to operate at any time he felt like and taking a human’s life was nothing to him. For many years, he constituted himself a big terror to the people of Lagos, the then Federal Capital, especially around Mushin where he lived and practised his trade. He strode the hemisphere like a colossus from 1971 when his boss was killed, till 1973 when he was nabbed after robbing a hotel bar attendant, Michael Osayunana, of the sum of ₦10. Yes, ₦10, but remember that Nigeria had just changed from using the pound to naira, and that was quite a huge sum of money back then. In fact, one could buy a brand new 504 Peugeot car with that amount and still had some change left. Mighty Joe’s capture This man (Mighty Joe) was executed for just N10 The arrest of Mighty Joe, according to legend, was as dramatic as his reign of terror. The self- styled ‘Strongman of Idi Oro’ was caught when someone he had earlier robbed recognised him and fingered him to the police and he was nabbed without any fight, as against his various boasts that no man born of a woman can arrest him due to his strong belief in his spiritual powers. He was said to pay some herbalists huge amounts to prepare charms for him so that he would remain invincible. However, some people then believed Mighty Joe was arrested on trumped-up charges, claiming he was not the great and notorious robbers the police said he was. Some even believed that he was not even an armed robber but a common street thug, or an area boy like we call them today. Such people claim that Nigeria’s biggest newspaper at that time, the Daily Times, was partly owned by the Federal government and the wealthy Alakija family of Mushin and Mighty Joe was said to have had a tussle with one of these prominent families who then set him up and ensure he was executed. While he was in prison awaiting his day at the Bar Beach, Mighty Joe converted to Islam and even offered prayers that the execution be reverted. That was never to be. His final journey. His journey to the stakes, just like that of his master, Oyenusi, Mighty Joe had a VIP ride from Kirikiri Prison to the Bar Beach in a police van escorted by six lorry loads of tough-looking anti-riot policemen. Hundreds of motorists, many of them workers on their way to their various places of work, were forced to clear out of the road as police siren announced the approach of the man about to die. It was a show of power which Mighty Joe loved and which caused his doom and as he was being led to the execution stake alongside his sidekick, Bashiru Fatola, a former soldier. the crowd erupted in joy. Another Bar Beach spectacle was about to happen. As he took his final walk, Mighty Joe was garbed in a white short sleeves shirt and brown trousers while Fatola wore a yellow flowing dress. (Mighty Joe’s famous last words) His last words After he was tied to the stakes, he was asked to say his last words and he blurted: “May God bless everybody, both my friends and enemies. Tell my wife, my mother and my in-law to keep fit.” He was then silenced by a hail of bullets, shattering his earthly body. Oops what crap… Hmmm; that’s a touching one. But now my question is that this man (Mighty Joe) was executed for just ₦10 and today we are nursing a whole lot of politicians who are toiling away with billions of naira, and believe you me… nothing is been done to them. Why?

President Muhammadu Buhari will soon address the nation on the efforts of his government to recover stolen funds and divulge how much has been receovered. Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, gave the indication after Tuesday night national caucus meeting of the party in Aso Villa, which was presided over by President Buhari. Oyegun also gave the assurance that the recovered stolen funds would be expended judiciously through necessary legislative approval. He said that the president would soon address the nation on how much has been recovered. He said the expanded national caucus of the APC met to discuss issues concerning the party and the state of the nation’s economy.
