– IYC says it has no link with Niger Delta Avengers (NDA) – RNDA is a splinter group of NDA – Youth Council condemns any move to associate it with Avengers A part of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Worldwide on Tuesday, August 9 dissociated itself from the activities of the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA). The faction group from the NDA known as Reform Niger Delta Avengers (RNDA) mentioned Udengs Eradiri, the IYC president, as one of the people which it criticised of being a member of the NDA. However, the IYC president dismissed the allegation, whereby some members of IYC affirmed that he was no longer the president of the Youth Council. In addition, Eradiri said nobody should drag the name of IYC into the unholy activities of the Avengers. Bristol Emmanuel, secretary general of the IYC lampooned those associating the youth body with militancy, claiming Eradiri was no more the president of the youth body. The embattled IYC president and a good number of members of his executive council have misunderstanding among themselves over who should lead IYC; a battle that was already in court. Ijaw Yoth Council (IYC) logo On Tuesday, August 9, the secretary general of IYC spoke to journalists at Yenagoa, the Bayelsa state capital. Emmanuel stated: “We condemn any attempt to drag the name of IYC to issues relating to militancy and Avengers. The organisation has no activity that has to do with Avengers. Eradiri is not the president of IYC. I am the secretary-general of the IYC and the head of Administration. I am the custodian of the documents and everything belonging to the council. Eradiri is not the president. “He has been relieved of that office. IYC, for now, is consulting with stakeholders and discussing with relevant institutions to end the crisis in this region. Online Auto Auctions USA bid for 250,000 USA cars inventory direct delivery to Tema and Lagos. “The IYC president remains Elvis Donkemezuo and that is the true reflection of Ijaw people and the position of the council. We are not speaking in the defence of Udengs; we are only defending the integrity of IYC.” Moreso, Donkemezuo said it was height of injustice to link IYC with the havoc being wreaked by Niger Delta Avengers. Donkemezuo stated that the youth body remained committed to the progress of the Ijaw nation. The factional president said: “We don’t want anybody to rope IYC to any issue that has not been approved by IYC. We don’t want people to associate the council to unending arms struggle. “For the sake of clarity, we want to state that Udengs Eradiri is no longer the president of the IYC. A court of competent jurisdiction sitting in Sagbama, Bayelsa state, has summoned him for parading himself as IYC president. “IYC is not Udengs Eradiri’s private estate. Therefore, we urge those who have personal or business quarrels with him not to drag the name of the council into their tussle. We distance ourselves from the Niger Delta Avengers and any splinter group from it as well as their sponsors. “Moreso, for the avoidance of doubt, we want the world to know that although we do not know who the NDA members are, we are confident that they are not Ijaw people and do not speak for the Ijaw or the Niger Delta Region. “They have identified that as a nation, we have an unresolved problem and they are trying to exploit that for their personal aggrandisement. The abject state of the Ijaw man and the Niger Delta is no longer breaking news. “The whole world is aware that the Niger Delta is underdeveloped despite the huge resources that have been taken from it. So, these people masking as freedom fighters are trying to cash in on this to exploit our plight as a tool to enrich themselves. Their actions do not reflect the true spirit of the Niger Delta Struggle. “Our struggle in the IYC is in line with the principles of our illustrious forebears like Isaac Adaka Boro, Harold Dappa-Biriye, the Brave authors of Kaiama Declaration, Ken Saro-Wiwa among others. The character, actions and antics of the NDA and their co-travellers, like the so called RNDA do not reflect the yearnings and aspirations of our land and people. This is because they are actually impoverishing our region and degrading our environment with their mindless destruction of oil facilities. “Finally, we call on the security agencies to intensify efforts to fish out the real faces behind the NDA mask, just as we advise our youths to be law abiding and go about your lawful business. These are trying times, but we shall overcome with God on our side. We must not allow profiteers to exploit our collective pains for their private gains. “We thank the Nigerian populace for their cooperation. IYC has nothing to do with the activities of NDA. We demand an apology for dragging the name of the council to such activities because our struggles are guided by the overall interest of the Ijaw nation.” As the heat generated by the Niger Delta Avengers onslaught continues to affect the South-south region, MEND insisted that Goodluck Jonathan was behind the Avengers. https://www.naij.com/922685-we-dont-have-anything-to-do-with-niger-delta-avengers-iyc-cries-out.html?source=index_main |
– Chief Edwin Clark has delivered a damning verdict on the members of the National Assembly following the budget padding scandal – Expresses sadness that poor Nigerians now sell their children to feed while greedy lawmakers buy posh cars worth millions of naira – Describes as annoying and shameful the way the lawmakers fix their projects in the national budget Chief Edwin Clark has described members of the National Assembly as the “most corrupt and number one enemies of this country”. The elder statesman and first republic minister of information delivered the damning verdict on the federal lawmakers during a press briefing organised by the authorities of Edwin Clark University, Kiagbodo, Delta state on Tuesday, August 2. Speaking on the backdrop of the budget padding scandal that has rocked the House of Representatives, Clark expressed sadness that “poor Nigerians now sell their children to feed while greedy lawmakers buy posh cars worth millions of naira". He said the most annoying is the shameful and unscrupulous way they fix their projects in the national budget. Meanwhile, the Nigerian Police has begun a probe of the alleged budget padding by the speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara and some of his principal officers. The Nation reports that the acting inspector- general of police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris, has raised a five-man special team to probe the alleged budget padding scandal. – Femi Falana, Mike Ozekhome, and the publicity secretary of Afenifere, Yinka Odumakin have called for the sacking of the Chief Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai over allegations of financial embezzlement – Falana says the resignation or removal of Buratai is necessary in the interest of national morality – Ozekhome specifically demands that Buratai should be tried before he be allowed to resign Lt Gen Tukur Yusufu Buratai is alleged to have bought two houses in Dubai worth $1.5m with fund diverted from the purchase of arms. Some prominent Nigerians have begun to pressure President Muhammadu Buhari to sack the chief army staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai following the revelation that he bought two houses in Dubai, worth $1.5m. According to the Punch, some of those who called for the army chief’s resignation or sacking on Sunday, July 10, are human rights lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN); another Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Chief Mike Ozekhome; and the publicity secretary of Afenifere, Mr. Yinka Odumakin among others. Femi Falana said the resignation or removal of Buratai was necessary in the interest of national morality. He said the explanation by the Nigerian Army authorities that Buratai paid for the properties in installments through his personal savings is a “cock and bull story”. “In view of the ban on the opening and operation of foreign accounts by public officers, the Code of Conduct Bureau should be involved in the investigation. “If the Chief of Army Staff does not deem it fit to resign forthwith, President Buhari should not hesitate to remove him in the interest of national morality,” Falana said. He regretted that the name of the Nigerian Army had been “ illegally” used to defend Buratai in the unfolding scam. ‘‘How an army General managed to save $1.5m has not been disclosed to Nigerians. Since the General was in charge of procurement for the Nigerian Army at the material time, the cock and bull story of the military high command has been called names,” the SAN stated. On his part, Ozekhome specifically demanded that Buratai should be tried before he would be allowed to resign. “I will rather urge that he be first tried through our criminal justice system trial, which is accusatorial and not inquisitorial. When found guilty, he can then be dismissed or court-martialled. “Let the government for once prove us wrong that its so called anti-corruption war is not targeted at profiled opponents by putting him through trial as a serving military officer. Just for once, I want to be proved wrong,” he said. Similarly, the publicity secretary of Afenifere, Mr. Yinka Odumakin said the illogical defence of Buratai by military authorities had made the position of the COAS “untenable”. He said: “His position has become untenable with that expose and very weak, feeble and sloppy defence. It is preposterous to ask the Federal Government that cleared him, to now fire him. And resignation is not in the dictionary of Nigerian officials but he obviously is a blight on the anti-corruption war.” Meanwhile, speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara has revealed a rather disturbing information about the ongoing anti-corruption war. Dogara who spoke with journalists at the weekend in Lagos, said monies running into billions of naira have been recovered buried in farmlands in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. The speaker was however silent on the precise amount recovered from the farmlands, but he said he was informed that an estimated N1.5 billion cash had so far been dug up. https://www.naij.com/886372-1-5m-dubai-mansions-president-buhari-sack-buratai.html?source=index_main

– Two people narrowly escaped death at the Lagos airport following a gunshot which was believed to be an accidental discharge – The gun of an orderly attached to a Senator accidentally discharged when he wanted to lodge his gun, which is a standard practice on air travel – The orderly and a woman were injured and taken to nearby hospital for treatment There was panic at the General Aviation Terminal (GAT) of Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, on Friday, July 8, as the gun of an orderly attached to a Senator accidentally discharged when he tried to remove the magazine before boarding a flight. The orderly and a woman standing by were injured on the legs, Sahara Reporters reports. According to eye witness account, the orderly who was to travel on Arik Air wanted to dislodge the magazine from the gun in line with standard practice in air travel but incidentally the gun released its bullet and hit him and another woman on the leg. On hearing the gunshot within the terminal, travelers and airport workers scampered for safety. The orderly and the woman were said to have trekked out of the terminal to the vehicle that conveyed them to the hospital without any assistance as the injury was not that severe. Confirming the incident, Yakubu Dati, the general manager, Public Affairs of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), said it was an accident and stowing the gun away with its magazine was a standard procedure because guns are not taken on-board aircraft but are usually checked in the luggage compartment. Describing the incident as minor, he assured air travellers that all the airports are safe and secure, adding that security at Nigerian airports has been fortified in recognition of the security challenges in the country and around the world. https://www.naij.com/885396-panic-lagos-airport-gunshot-leaves-two-injured.html?source=index_main |

– There has been great concern in the country over Fulani herdsmen and farmers – A group of some of the herdsmen and farmers visited Senate president, Bukola Saraki at the National Assembly yesterday – Saraki said that Nigeria is not the only country where farmers and herdsmen co-exist. Senate President Bukola Saraki Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki has appealed to herdsmen and farmers across the country to maintain peace as the National Assembly is ready to proffer lasting solution to the perennial clashes over grazing by cattle. Speaking to a group of herdsmen from Kautal Hore Socio-Cultural Association, Jigawa State branch visited him, the Senate President who described the perennial clashes between the farmers and herdsmen as unfortunate, also appealed to the herdsmen to maintain peace at all times. According to Saraki, “the National Assembly and all the stakeholders have been meeting on how to ensure that there is permanent peace between the two major groups in the nation’s agricultural system”. He expressed concern over the recently frequent clashes, explaining that Nigeria is not the only country where farmers and herdsmen co-exist. “There must be peace. There must be peaceful coexistence and there cannot be peace when human Lives are being wasted. The National Assembly will stop at nothing to ensure that there is peace. “We will not stop working until there is peace between the farmers and herdsmen in this country. Please be patient”, Saraki said while promising that the Senate will soon come out with suggestions on how to end the conflict,” he said. Earlier, chairman of the group, Umar Kabir Hadejia in his speech titled, Appeal for an intervention said the Fulanis are traditionally a nomadic pastoral people who rear their cattle and sheep across the vast territory of Nigeria as the largest nomadic group in the world. He lamented that due to urbanisation, there has been an increasing trend of conflict between farmers and the pastoralists largely due to the Fulani’s seeking fertile grazing lands for their developmental purposes. This action, he said has resulted in violent attacks and reprisal counter attacks between the herdsmen who feel that their way of life is being threatened on one hand and the farmers on the other hand who felt aggrieved that their farmlands and crops were lost due to the activities of the herdsmen. Umar Hadejia lamented that leading politicians and presidential aspirants in the country during election had made promises to provide the cattle rearers with grazing land but they all failed to deliver on the promises. He therefore said Fulani’s believe that provision of grazing reserves would boost livestock population, lessen the difficulty of herding and reduce seasonal migration as well as enhance the interaction among farmers, pastoralists and other rural dwellers. Umar Hadejia maintained that herdsmen were not belligerent and terrorists as they are branded in the media. He however called on the Senate committee on Agriculture to wade into the matter with a view to coming up with an enabling law that will protect the image and integrity of all Nigerians as well as the rights of herdsmen to tend to their livestock. https://www.naij.com/849260-read-senate-asked-farmers-herdsmen.html?source=index_main
