Pandemonium broke out on Sunday in Ibillo, Akoko Edo Local Government Area of Edo State, when a man, popularly known as Alhaji, used a machete to kill three persons during an argument over the ownership of a bitter leaf plant.
The three persons killed in the incident that occurred at Ogo quarters of the town were one Mr Aliu Ademo, a girl called Favour and a boy called Isaac, who died on Monday morning at the hospital.
It was gathered that trouble started following an argument between Alhaji and the daughter of another co-tenant over the bitter leaf plant in the compound. Alhaji, currently on the run, was said to have picked the vegetable leaves without the consent of the owner, something that angered Favour, the daughter of another tenant.
"Alhaji came out with a cutlass and macheted the girl. Mr Aliu saw what happened and started shouting, Alhaji ran after the boy called Isaac to kill him but Aliu pursued him in order to save the boy. He (Alhaji) macheted both the small boy and Aliu.
“He decided to kill the man because he came to save the boy. The small boy was rushed to the hospital because he became unconscious, but we later heard that he died this morning (Monday)," an eyewitness stated.
Reacting to the incident, Edo State Police Public Relations Officer, Stephen Onwechei, said the suspect was currently on the run but that the police were on his trail.
"He abandoned his cutlass and took to his heels. When people came around to stop him, he macheted them, including the child. That was barbaric.
"I understand he previously had quarrel with the mother of the child over the ownership of a bitter leaf tree in the compound. That is madness but we must arrest him no matter how far he tries to run. He must face justice for his wicked act," Onwechei stated.

The ancient city of Ile-Ife, Osun State, will lie low
on Wednesday between 9.00 am and 4.00pm
when the official announcement of the demise of
the Ooni, Oba Okunade Sijuwade Olubuse II will
be made.

The Awara of Iwara-Ife, Oba Layi Adereti, who
disclosed this while speaking on the preparations
ahead of the burial of the highly revered
monarch who died at Saint Mary Hospital in
London about two weeks ago, said that all the
residents of the ancient town, whether male or
female, were expected to remain indoors
because Oro rite would be performed during the
period to mark the announcement and transition
programmes.

Oba Adereti who is also the head of Oro Cult in
the entire Ile-Ife also declared that after the Oro
rite and proclamation, more rites would follow.
He, therefore, appealed to all the residents to
heed the restriction order from the palace and
remain indoors during the period when the Oro
deity will be out for the rite.

The monarch added that though only females
are normally barred from coming out when Oro
festival is being carried out, but this time round,
it has no respect for any gender, insisting that
both male and female residents must remain
indoors.

“This is an official statement from the palace of
Awara of Iwara-Ife who is the head of Oro deity
that on Wednesday, 12th August 2015, there will
be an official proclamation of the demise of the
Ooni of Ife. The announcement will be made
public during the Oro rite, being the final rites
on the demise of Ooni of Ife,” he said.

“The residents of the ancient town are therefore
urged to keep away from the streets between the
hours of 9 am and 4 pm during which the Oro
deity will be out,” he added.

“With this announcement, people are advised to
stay indoors for the period when the Oro deity
will be out.”

According to the traditional ruler who spoke for
the first time on the reported demise of the
foremost monarch, the Oro rite is the final rite
of passage for the Ooni.

Since the news of the demise of Ooni was
reported in the media, traditional chiefs in Ile-Ife
have continued to deny the report, saying that
the monarch is alive and hale.

But developments at the palace have continued
to confirm the demise of the monarch.

The Nigerian Army has confirmed the arrested of
several members of Boko Haram insurgents in
Lagos and Ogun States respectively.

The outgoing General Officer Commanding
(GOC) 81Division Nigerian Army Major General
Tamunomiebi Dibi who this disclosure yesterday
said suspected members of Boko Haram were
arrested during several raids conducted in both
states.

General Dibi made this disclosure soon after he
handed over the reign of command of the
Division to Major General Isidore Henry Edet as
the new GOC of the Division.

Earlier in his address to officers and soldiers
under the division, General Dibi who casted an
iron shield security around Lagos and Ogun
State warned soldiers against avoidable deaths of
their members and also ensure the stay on the
alert against extremists loyal to the insurgents.

The former General Officer Commanding said
the war against Boko Haram is not only in the
north eastern but also allover the country.
He said: “You are all aware of what we are going
through, the problems of Boko Haram, the fact
that you are not in the North East does not
mean you are not fighting the war, you are
fighting the war because wars of such nature
does not have a front or a rear. Boko Haram can
operate here and can operate in any part of the
country.”

He said that the division had been able to curtail
the excesses of Boko Haram especially by
preventing them from striking in Lagos, urging
the personnel of the Division to do more in
ensuring that the insurgents never strike in
Lagos.

He said soldiers and officers must ensure that
the security measures put in place to ensure that
the incursion of Boko Haram into Lagos are
prevented, must be sustained, adding that
personal security of the soldiers and officers
must also be taken serious.

He urged soldiers in the Division to remain
vigilant and also ensure that the insurgents do
not infiltrate Nigeria’s economic hub and its
environs.

The retired GOC noted that dozens of members
of the Boko Haram sects were arrested during his
18months service at the 81 Division.

General Dibi said: “You are all aware of the
challenges we are going through; the problem of
Boko Haram. The fact that you are not in the
northeast does not mean you are not fighting
the war. We are all involved in the war because
wars of this nature do not have a front or a rear.

So far, we are winning the war and I want you
to do more. Be more vigilant and ensure security
of your environment, your Barracks.

“I do not want to be in my village to hear about
any careless death. I want to hear that this
division I am leaving is the most efficient division
in the Nigeria army. I give God the glory for
making it possible to serve Nigeria for 35 years
and retiring today. I also thank all of you for
supporting me. Some of you have done so well
by cooperating, some of you lagged behind. For
those lagging behind, please change your
attitude towards work, be more dedicated
because you do not have any other job than this
job, neither do you have any other army. The
army is a voluntary organization which you
decided to join, nobody forced you to join,
therefore, do not allow any to force you do your
job.

“If you do your job, you are not doing anyone
any favour. It is your job and you should do it
well.

“Military job is a challenging task and Lagos State
itself is a peculiar state. We have had our
challenging times but we were able to overcome
them. Under my watch, we were able to prevent
the incursion of Boko Haram insurgents into
Lagos. A good number of them were arrested
here in Lagos. Having served for 35years and
retiring now, the legacy I expect my successor,
the new General Officer Commanding 81
Division to uphold is to ensure a highly
disciplined professional, efficient 81Division.”
