guy let me not lie to you oh. driving should be a relax mode. not to much stress.

i was warned by the driving school that almost all to people don't came for Manuel end up not liking it many of them re enroll for automatic. many people sold their Manuel cars after using it for a while..

is just like using old button phones like blackberry and iPhone together.
My first car was an automatic accord, I'm going for a 307 manual now. My mind is made up. The only new thing for me is shifting gears n clutching. Been driving auto for 4yrs.

MrSuama:
its the clutching that causes the jerking. When you change gear, you are supposed to release your clutch halfway to engage the gear smoothly. So, if you change gear and release clutch instantly, it would jerk. in other words, when the car is jerking, all you need do is press down your clutch, it would stop jerking. You can then engage the appropriate gear.

Note: On a level ground, with your gear stick at neutral, the car would remain static. To move the car, you have to press down your clutch located at the left end, you then draw your gear stick left sideways, then forward/up to engage gear 1. Hold your steering firmly and begin to raise your legs from the clutch slowly, you will notice that before you finish raising your legs from the clutch, the car would begin to move. The accelerator/throttle is used to increase the speed.
I sincerely appreciate this very comprehensive explanation you gave. Thanks a bunch.

sharpwriter:
To overcome jerk and stop (also known as stalling)... You must understand that your clutch and accelerator pedals work just like a weighing scale. When one is up, the other is down. It means this operation works simultaneously. Pressing the clutch down means the accelerator is up/slightly up and vice versa.

Your release level of the clutch must be equivalent to the pressing level of the accelerator simultaneously at once.

To understand better : as you are sitting down, play with your two feet, let the left go up and the right feet go down at the same time and vice versa.

When I got this logic one day when I was in deep thoughts about it because the thing gave me stress, and I tried it out , that was the day I started overcoming stalling when about to move the car.

Note: you move most times with gear one, gear 2 can move the car forward also but not as efficient as gear one. If you've been running on high gears, during a slow down or abrupt stop, you return the gear to gear one to be able to pick up again and move smoothly.

Also, learning with one's car or a free and available car is the best way to know driving quickly. Driving schools are a waste of time and money because of high cost and lesser driving times which won't let you grasp and master manual quickly. Unless you have a car at home to drive while using driving school cars to learn, I don't advise going to driving schools. They are only useful for getting driver's license.
Thanks a lot for this. You're a very good teacher. I read everything you type over again and it gives me this confidence that learning manual isn't a herculean task afterall. Thanks again.

If you lose your break with a manual car, you can drop the speed by moving from whatever gear you are driving at to gear one instantly, and gradually decelerate the car to a stop effectively.
Thanks for the enlightenment.

MrKodak:
What i have discovered is, power drivers and car enthusiasts enjoy manual the most. Casual drivers prefer automatic. Automatic cars are programmed to change gears for u when they deem fit in the given scenario u find urself ie. U re coming with speed and u slow down, it will take u to gear one and start building momentum gradually. The main advantage is, u don't need much effort to drive it as long as u can break and steer the car. For manual cars, u control the car in all ramifications. U tell the car the gear to select at any point in time as long as u understand what u re doing. ie. lets say u slowed down on a sloppy corner and u start accelerating again, u can actually disregard certain gears to move u faster or slower depending on what situation u re in or what u want the car to do. This means u can some times move directly from 1 to 3 or 2 to 4 or 3 to 5 to get an edge over fellow drivers on the road. This makes it faster and gives u absolute control of what u want when an automatic will be taking a lot of effort to build up to the same gear levels, u will be gone(otilor 😂), thats why no f1 driver will use an automatic to compete, them go troway u far far.
Other advantages include transmission maintenance, u will hardly see a used manual car that has transmission issues as long as the user made sure the gear oil wasn't shorting. But with an automatic car, u may have to change gearboxes with little abuse.
I learnt to drive with my old mans 504, i decided to buy an automatic as my first car. Needless to say, i have since gone back to manual and i am not going back.
All in all sha, everyone should drive what they are most comfortable with sha.
I perfectly understand this and I thank you muchos. As soon as money complete, I'm getting my 307 manual by GOD'S grace.

This is the first comment to correctly diagnose the problem and profer the correct solution. Well done.

Others are just projecting their own experiences onto the OP.

It is an aberration to enter the main road on the very first experience with a manual car.

If you have never had any experience with a manual car then you start driving in a wide open field so you can get used to the jerk and stop that comes with learning how to manipulate clutch and brake.

Once you have overcome that wahala then you are ready to enter the main road- never before.

The people are taking him straight to main road so that he will feelinadequate, that to make him book more lessons and they will make more money.

Deceivers
Pls what causes and how does one quickly overcome the jerk n stop thing?

They feel the stress also bt can manage it or adapt cos driving is their job or work bt I'm sure they know an automatic would be more comfortable especially in traffic.

2nd if ur clutch is strong then its more stressful to deal with cos u alway use ur clutch of and on. more in traffic.
Thanks, I get it now.

hmmm, everybody na prof for Nigeria.
As far as i am concerned, if you don't know how to drive a manual transmission, you are not a complete driver.
Driving could be fun with the right people.
Just like someone advised, get a friend who owns a manual car, fuel the car during weekends, locate a field and practice your driving with his guide. Don't be in a hurry to be on the road, just take your time to cast out the spirit of fear.
After mastering your skills, drive within an estate and less busy roads with a guide beside you.
When you are done, go back to the driving school and get your driving certificate to process your driving licence.
You are also finding it hard because the driving school is after profit, the longer you stay the more money they earn. All the best.
Well said.
My own case is that I've been driving auto cars for years n I'm getting a manual car this time, so I'll have to learn the manual now.

you have to give yourself time. It will start and stop and the car will stall you a couple of times but you will eventually master it.
Don't give up. Currently enjoying driving a small cute manual car. I even parallel park like a pro.

But 5 days is too small to learn now. Na wa for you o.
I learnt for 2 weeks, and put learner sign for 6 months, not because I couldn't drive but because drivers will be more understanding for learners and when the car stalls, I won't be under pressure.

It's the worst when the car stalls during traffic or on the sloping part of a bridge then starts to reverse back. That feeling of fear is something I won't forget. Thank God for handbrake
Interesting read. For me, I've been driving auto for years. Wanna buy a manual car now and restart learning driving the manual style.

Manual is harder to learn than automatic obviously. Bt if u can master Manual u can handle auto after a getting ur feet placement cos auto has no clutch like Manual.

if ure in a hurry to buy a car and drive I advise u learn auto 1st. Bt if ure taking ur time then u can learn Manual.

Manual is more interesting to drive bt can be stressful in traffic.
Pls can you break down the stress in traffics? I don't these bus drivers breaking a sweat here in hold ups.

Manual cars has its own niche and it's own future. They have been saying manual have no future since the year 2000, but today major brands still make manual models.

Manual is better for commercial and transportation business, or for heavy use. Manual gives better control, acceleration and it's more durable. It is also very cheap to replace or repair.
Economical.

Learning manual can be very stressful but it's the best. Don't give up. If you learn manual you can easily drive automatic.
I have been driving all kinds of automatic car's since 2006: I didn't not go to any driving school before I started driving automatic. I just hoop inside my Mercedes 230 then, hold the steering and move slowly until I became perfect.. Do you know the funny part of it: all this while I have been driving automatic, I cannot drive a manual car until last two years that I said no, this is abnormal. Then I went to a driving school to learn manual.
Wow! My case now is that after driving auto for about 4yrs I'm switching to a manual car. I'll catch up by GOD'S grace.
