Politics › Man, 37, To Hang For Killing Step-daughter by ritababe(op): 9:45am On Oct 08, 2013
A Talata Mafara High Court in Zamfara, yesterday, sentenced one Abdullahi Abubakar, 37, to death by hanging for the murder of his step-daughter.

The convict, of Tungar-miya village in the Talata Mafara Local Government Area, was arraigned in August 2008 for putting a poisonous substance, suspected to be Germaline, in his step-daughter’s food, which led to her death.
Justice Bello Gummi said the court was convinced beyond reasonable doubt that the accused committed the offence as confessed by him in a statement.

Gummi said the convict intentionally and with the knowledge that death or grievous bodily injury would be the probable consequence of his action, poisoned his step-daughter, Suwaiba.
Justice Bello held: “The court, therefore, finds and holds that the prosecution has established the guilt of the accused person as charged.

“I accordingly sentence you to death and you will be hung by the neck until you die. This judgment is subject to confirmation by the state governor.”

Counsel to the convict, Mr. Benn Ezza, said the judgment came to them as a surprise.
He said: “We will study the judgment and establish the next line of action.”
Politics › Pipeline Explosion Kills Four Brothers In Plateau by ritababe(op): 9:38am On Oct 08, 2013
JOS—Four members of the same family in Tariya village of Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State were, yesterday, killed while attempting to scoop petroleum from a ruptured pipeline in the locality.

Assistant Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, Chrisantus Longbit, said two of the victims were burnt beyond recognition, while the other two, who were rushed to Our Lady of Apostle Hospital, Jos, died shortly.
Longbit said when the five people went to siphon the petroleum, a misunderstanding ensued amongst them. One of them, who is presently at large, allegedly lit a match that led to the explosion.
He said: “The person who lit the match fled the area, but we have spoken to his family and they gave his name as Idi.
“We have warned the communities and the NSCDC Commandant, Vincent Bature, has on several occasion visited the village head on this issue of pipeline vandalism, but they have refused to listen.”
…another dies stealing fuel
Meantime, the decomposed body of a 25-old-man, Zayyanu Abubakar, has been evacuated from inside a petrol tanker compartment where he suffocated and died since Friday, October 4, while stealing petrol.
According to reports the deceased fell inside the tank of the vehicle with plate number, XA 640 TBW, parked along Sokoto Western bye-pass and loaded with 33,000 litres of petrol.
The deceased was alleged to have stolen 20 litres from the fuel compartment and had returned for more when he ended up inside the tank.
It took the combined efforts of the officers of the state fire service, the police from Kwanni Division, Sokoto, and some good Samaritans, four hours to bring out the decomposed body.
Yahaya Mohammed, a relative of the deceased, said: “He told his siblings about his earlier successful exploits and they warned him against going back into the vehicle.
“He had told them that he nearly suffocated in the first attempt, but unknown to them, he went back, got trapped and died.”
A fire serviceman, Zayyanu Jelani said: “We were here since around 8a.m., when we were alerted about the ugly development.
“This is the first time we are recording this type of unfortunate incident in Sokoto apart from fire incidents on fuel tankers.”

Spokesman of the state police command, DSP Al-Mustapha Sani, confirmed the story and added that the police would thoroughly investigate the incident.

The remains of the deceased had been deposited at the morgue of Uthmanu Danfodio University Teaching Hospital, Sokoto.

Nadal has 11,160 points, just 40 ahead of Djokovic, who lost his grip on the top spot despite defeating the Mallorcan to win the China Open on Sunday.
Britain’s Andy Murray, currently recuperating from back surgery, is third in the revised rankings but Swiss great Federer sinks one place from sixth to seventh.
Spain’s David Ferrer remains at number four, just 185 points off Murray’s tally, while Argentina’s Juan Martin del Potro moves up two places to fifth after winning the Japan Open.
Since returning in February after seven months out with a left knee injury, Nadal, 27, has won 10 titles, including the French Open and US Open.
Until Sunday’s loss to Djokovic, he had been unbeaten since Wimbledon, where he was a shock first-round loser to Belgium’s Steve Darcis.
Nadal has previously had two stints at the summit of men’s tennis. He first became number one in August 2008 and stayed there for 46 weeks, regaining top spot in June 2010 and adding 56 weeks to his tally.

Politics › Our Airspace Is Still Safe - Stella Oduah by ritababe(op): 12:33pm On Oct 07, 2013
In a telephone interview he granted to Vanguard last Saturday concerning the tension that has gripped the nation’s aviation sector following last Thursday’s crash in Lagos and several other near air mishaps in Sokoto and Benin, Mr Joe Obi, the Special Adviser on Media to the Aviation Minister Princess Stella Oduah said there was nothing unusual about the situation.

Reacting to the reported incident of an air return from Benin to Abuja involving an Arik aircraft last Friday, he said it was nothing to worry about.
Said he: “I am not aware of the air return from Benin to Abuja which reportedly happened last Friday. But even if it happened, pilots who do so are usually applauded because it is a standard safety procedure to adopt when pilots are having landing difficulties. If this happens, it is not news.”
Also reacting to the emergency landing of a Kabo Airline aircraft at the Sokoto Airport which coincidentally occurred the same day, Obi stated that the Saudi Arabia bound plane only had a stop over at the Sokoto Airport to pick up additional passengers.
According to a statement he issued last Saturday evening:”On October 4, 2013, a Boeing 747-3 aircraft with Reg 5N-JRM, operated by Kabo Airlines arrived safely with all passengers and crew on board, following a landing incident at the Sokoto airport at 2100 GMT.

” The aircraft which departed from Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano was enroute Saudi Arabia when it had a stop-over at the Sokoto airport for passenger pick-up. “Preliminary reports indicate that the control tower gave the pilot clearance to land on Runway 08 but the captain, opted to use Runway 26, for reasons yet to be ascertained.
The 512 souls on board, made up of 494 passengers and 18 crew members landed safely. The aircraft however damaged parts of the Instruments Landing System (ILS) and came to a stop with deflated tyres. The FAAN emergency response apparatus acted swiftly to secure all souls on board and the aircraft.”

Sports › Funds Approved For Nigeria’s Contingent To Ethiopia by ritababe(op): 10:49pm On Oct 04, 2013
Abuja – The Minister of Sports, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, on Friday said that President Goodluck Jonathan had approved funds for a large contingent of Nigerian fans to attend the qualifying match against Ethiopia.

The minister told newsmen in Abuja that the president also expressed his readiness to support efforts to ensure a successful outing.

The Super Eagles will on Oct. 13 face Ethiopia’s Walya Antelopes in a first-leg match in the Brazil 2014 final qualification round.

“I am delighted to say that Mr President has given us his full support.
“He has approved funds for the NFA to ensure that large contingents of Nigerian fans are taken to Ethiopia for the game.
“Everyone who witnessed AFCON 2013 knows how vociferous Ethiopian fans could be; so, we are responding appropriately to ensure that large contingents of Nigerian supporters are represented.
“As Mr President has approved financial support for this, we are doing everything possible to ensure that we come back from Ethiopia with a very good result,” he said
Bolaji said that preparations for the match were ongoing and expressed the hope that it would be a great match.
“The preparation is going on very well, I speak everyday with officials of the Football Association and everything is going on well,” he added. (NAN)
Politics › 20 Injured As Rival Youths Clash In Edo by ritababe(op): 10:39pm On Oct 04, 2013
Edo – No fewer than 20 persons were on Friday wounded in a clash between rival youths at Ikpeshi community in Akoko Edo Local Government Area of Edo.
The clash cropped up following a disagreement over who should collect levies from vehicle loaders in the community on behalf of the local government council.
Several residents fled from the community because of the clash, while properties worth millions of naira were destroyed during the conflict.

An eyewitness, Mr Abbe Oboh, said that the crisis started when one faction wanted to take over the collection of levies from the other group.
“The other faction refused and this led to a shootout among the youths,’’ he said.
Oboh said that the deployment of personnel from the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) the state police command, however, aided efforts to bring the situation under control.
Mr Joseph Akerejola, the Chairman of Akoko Edo Local Government Council, said that normalcy had been restored to the area.
“The police are on top of the situation and everything is under control.
“The perpetrators of the crisis would, however, be brought to book,’’ he vowed. (NAN)
