sammy2flow: Good morning guys I am planning to do my PhD (petroleum engineering )i n the US. Please, can you tell me step by step procedure to follow in order to apply for a school with funding. Thanks Step 1 Take GRE, you might want to consider taking TOEFL too Step 2 Look for schs that match your profile (GPA, Test scores, etc) (you might have to review over 600 sch websites) Step 3 Send emails to grad coord requesting for your chance of being considered for admission and funding. You could as well contact Prof of interest (POI) Step 4 Throw in apps based on responses you get in Step 3 (Putting your eggs in different baskets) Step 5 Watch your eggs hatch But what do I know? Let’s wait for our seniors to throw light into your question |

mamsiey: Okay so most schools will focus more on your Quant score than the verbal. Your combined aggregate is not bad either. Here are some schools that comes to mind. You’ll have to check if they offer your course though and email the grad coordinator with your profile and ask if the dept has funding (grad assistantships) for incoming students:
University of Toledo Cleveland State University of Akron Youngstown state ( I know someone who did actuarial science there) Bowling Green state Middle Tennessee state East Tennessee state Mississippi state Georgia state Austin Peay
My list is not exhaustive though. You can google the program name for list of universities that offer it. Trust me, it is a tedious but rewarding experience ; and the hardwork does pay off! All the best! Toledo requires official transcript before one’s application can be considered complete. So he should keep that in mind |

Evans211: Hello everyone, good evening/morning. I appreciate you all for a great job done here thus far. I’m new here, and I’d like to ask some questions....
I just got admission into Texas tech Uni (department of political science).. I got an offer as a TA to online graders. The assistantship comes with a stipend of $10,000 for the period of 9 months (which I can’t really make sense of)...
The admission and offer came few hours ago.. I wish to seek your individual opinion, based on experience overtime about the funding (check attached), before sending a mail to the graduate coordinator.
Thanks Congrats Evans! I can see you’re clear on the somewhat nebulous offer. |

lordeoregon: Congrats on both your admission and GA. If they waived your entire tuition, and it's just semester fees or health insurance you have to pay then that should be great. Usually GA stipends (if 20hrs weekly) factor in the monthly costs of living in your town/city, so you should be fine. I school in TX, and monthly stipends after tax is 1338 which is very decent for a student here (with a few hundreds left if boyz no too ball that month ). I even heard one gets a refund of certain percentage of taxes paid after filing tax returns, interesting....
So all you need are funds for your first month expenses, and a genuine bank statement for the visa interview. Cheers Baba. The statement in bold is very correct. |

That's why I'm asking for someone that can share with me. E dakun, e sh'anu mi While I pray you get a premium account, I’ll advise you set an average time for answering each question (Verbal is 1.5 while Quant is 1.75). This will certainly help you in your practice. For instance if you want to answer just 5 questions on Quant, multiply 1.75 by 5... Lastly, practice! Practice!! Practice!!! I wish you God luck |

Tobironke: I registered with affordable tests for my gre test November 2019 and I wrote the test on 15th December 2019. The testing agency sent my scores to the schools I applied to and all was well till Saturday, January 18th 2020 when I received a mail from ETS that I have an outstanding of $480 on my account as a result of a charge back fee of $220 plus service fee of $20 requested twice (that's a total of $480) by the owner of the credit card used to register me and a hold has been put on my scores. I mailed them and told them a mistake must have occurred as I was scared of my scores being affected. While I waited for a reply, I messaged affordable tests yesterday and told him everything with screenshots of the mail I received. He denied requesting for a chargeback and also asked me to mail them. Before I knew what was happening, affordable tests blocked my number on WhatsApp and blocked my other number too. Today, ETS replied me and here is a screenshot of their response. I registered with affordable tests and that was what I got This is really crazy. Just a random dude on the internet trying to cash in on hustlers. How bad! |

SuomyNona: Presently studying for TOEFL, it will increase the probability of securing GRA and a wider range of possible schools. It’ll sure boost one’s profile but how bout admission deadline that’s in sight. Have you registered? |
Education › Re: How To Achieve High Scores On The GRE by rkarang: 10:50am On Dec 29, 2019 |
SuomyNona: That's why it is important to understand yourself and plan your study accordingly.
I personally used only the ETS official books, ETS power prep and Barron's 1100 words for preparation. I knew I do not have the mental rigor to go through other voluminous books. So I focused on the nearest most likely questions I can encounter in the test. So how’s admission process going? TOEFL is really giving me huge concern. I don’t have the financial resource for it, I can only squeeze myself to take it. As such, I narrowed my sch search to schs that waive TOEFL for Nigerians but then the emphasis schs place on TOEFL for GTA is a huge concern. |
Education › Re: How To Achieve High Scores On The GRE by rkarang: 10:33am On Dec 29, 2019 |
Funnily enough, a friend of mine sat for GRE in second week of this month. He didn’t do any math review... he answers any Quant question one gives him in seconds without even writing anything down.
He’s such a smart dude... He knows his Verbal is weak, so he concentrated on Verbal... he learnt a few vocabularies and all... he didn’t use powerprep
In the eventual outcome of the test, his Verbal score was extremely low (tho on different test day, we had same score in Verbal) but his Quantitative score was superb (84 percentile)
So basically, the exam is bout what you’re made of. If we have to spend hours prepping for either or both aspect of the tests, it’s because we have deficiency in either or both aspect of the tests.
I’m pretty sure if anyone sees his Quantitative score, such person would be curious to know the materials he used or his depth of practice |

sholaball: Hello guys, my visa was approved today Dec 19th, 2019 at US Embassy.
School: Western Kentucky University Graduate Assistantship: $26k Balance: $3297
Before I delve into questions I was asked. I will like to say every single I was asked where questions I had written down prior and my interview went exactly the way I prayed (I prayed against being asked SOA and I wasn't asked
My interview questions in no particular order
V.O: How are doing Me: I'm doing great thank you.
V.O: passport and I20 pls Me: passed it. (At this point I wasn't having cold feet and pretty much calm. Btw he had denied two guys before me
VO: why are you goin to the US Me: To pursue a masters degree in Chemistry @ Western Kentucky University (WKU)
VO: why WKU Me: because WKU offers interdisciplinary specialty such as computational chem, materials chem, nanochemistry, Env Chem, Hybrid inorganic-organic polymer. (VO cuts me and said but all school offers dat) Then i said not all schools do; must schools.offer courses in the traditional fields of chemistry namely organic, inorganic, physical and analytic process. * Btw I failed to tell him WKU has an advanced materials institute dat specializes in the analysis and characterization of materials for research purposes* However he was pleased wit my response. I must also mention that when he cut me I didn't fidget rather I used it to drive home my point, I was assertive in a way dat showed I know what I was talking about.
VO: How many schools did u apply? ( Didn't ask me to name them) Me: 4
VO: do you knw any about Kentucky? Me: Yes I do. "WKU is in Bowling Green which is the third largest city after Louisville & Lexington. The Gov is Andrew Beshear. Motto of the state is United we stand divided we fall. ( Kentucky is bounded by Ohio River in the North and Appalachian mountains in the East - didn't remember to say dis as he was satisfied wit the aforementioned)
VO checks my i20 and said "oh you were offered GT Assitanship, so whose gonna support you Me: My dad VO: what does he do Me: He is a business man. He owns an oil. & Gas coy and dey are into sales and distribution of Diesel. He didn't ask me to show my bank statement. The only documents are asked for were my passport and I20.
VO: what are you goin to be doing after graduation Me: I'll come back to 9ja take a new position as a researcher in our lab. VO: what does your company do? Me: we into Engineering and Laboratory research.
VO: I will be issuing your visa @ dis tym Me: at dis point I couldn't believe my eyes. Beginning of 2019, I didn't know when I was gonna write GRE but I would write. Collected the white paper - I momentarily felt like a star . Got to the queue to pay the reciprocity fee excused myself to d bathroom and I jst started praising God.
My advice : prepare well. Speak confidently if possible slow in order to pick ur words right and audibly. Above all prayer every single I prayed about turned out.
This is how my interview went y'all.
Till we all make it, we are all a work in progress. Remember a pregnant woman doesn't envy a nursing mother. Thanks and bye Congrats! Did you take TOEFL? |

Pefuele: Send an e-mail to the Graduate School to confirm if TOEFL is required for Nigerians. If a school waives TOEFL for Nigerians, is it safe enough to assume that one can be considered for TA without submitting TOEFL? I’m really worried... Just lately I have a growing concern bout taking TOEFL... but sadly admission deadline is in sight. In the Graduate Assistantship form online, the sch asked: Is English your Primary Language? Yes/No If no, please provide your TOEFL score _______ The sch waives TOEFL for Nigerians... so I want to be sure if I could pick yes then I sent a msg to grad coordinator in this regard but I haven’t got a response from him (it’s been days now) I know certainly that here is US Admission and Visa Encyclopedia |

Muleriders: Your cgpa is good.. But for your GRE, it's on average side.
Follow this steps.
1. Go to WES website and use the free calculator to convert your grades to 4.0
2. Hit Google and search for masters in business analytics in US and browse through the list of schools. (most schools offer this under MBA though)
3. Go through the requirements of the school and see if your cgpa and GRE score matches (I'm sure your cgpa does).
4. Check through the scholarship opportunities of the schools to see if your profile fit in.
5. Weigh the best options at hand and you may need USnews to compare the ranking.
6. Send in your applications and get ADMITTED I retook and got: Quantitative 157 Verbal 144 AWA not yet out |
