jites: Thanks Oh Fhemmmy someone has to try and put all this theory into practice.. special thanks to Robinski..I dey trouble the man on whatsapp whenever I notice any casala o. I started with just 30 then decided that I will just keep growing the 30 into broodstock for future hatching exercise.. so Mickfish be on standby o cos I like one hatchery photo you put up one time but I cannot locate it again so i will need your assistance with the construction of a little compact hatchery next year. Presently I stocked 1200 for trial and so far God has been faithful and everything is going according to plan. A little challenge is the 3 days changing of water.. I think it's a kind of waste with no proper drainage system. So I decided to plant some plantains as they use water a lot and then planted some other crops. Next year I intend to by God's grace construct a little earthen pond close by which will mainly be for broodstock growing and some of the water from the concrete pond will be going there. We have formed a cooperative in our location as there was none and registered it.. more than 20 members now of different aspects from hatchery specialist to grow out guys. We would endeavour to regulate the price by kilo and take the mono poly from the market women.. We will try a d work with them so everyone is a winner Members are shareholders buying shares and in turn the pool of fund will be available as credit facility for members and later none members with collateral. Profit distributed by ratio of shares owned Make the cooperative a platform to get government agricultural grants and assistance. In the long run hatching, drying and packaging is on the agenda cos one has to try and maximise return with less effort by his Grace. Shalom all Absolutely brilliant!!! You have done well my bro, keep it up. troubling me is allowed oo , coz if u don't trouble me who will . www.agricnetwork.com |

pumppie: Whether earthen or concrete, both will do well. The key is management! Profitability however should be measured in terms of expenses, duration and outcome. While the concrete pond system might be expensive to run due to various overhead costs (constant water change, fuelling etc.), it generally produces quick results say between 3months to 4months. (Unlike earthen ponds). Some operators of earthen ponds hide under the guise that fishes are in there natural environment so they usually do little in terms of feeding, medication etc. Hence, the cause of poor harvest over a longer period. I have been practicing fish farming for over 12 years now and I can authoritatively tell you that I TOTALLY DISAGREE with the FACE statement that fishes in earthen ponds perform better. Performance can only be achieved WHEN and IF all measures are put in place!! SHIKENNA! Well Said!!! |

I think that explain y fish has to be imported from the south, the same thing applies to my location Makurdi, Benue state, I know of a woman who usually buy a truck load of fish from Ibadan every week. The farmers in abuja nd environs can't meet up with d demand 4 fish, hence dre is need 4 importation locally. True boss |

mercylicious: i will also say that fish farming is less stressfull than poultry. U feed them 3 to 4 times a day and change water twice a week, then sort biweekly.Chikena. Not like poultry dt u will be pampering like a new bride to know when it is happy or not, else, they start dieing in mass. Fish also doesnt have odour dt will disturb ur neighbours. With poultry, u try so hard to maintain an odorless farm . My friend had issue with his drainage and for 2 weeks, he did not change the water in his pond and nothing happened to the fishes , just with time, they stopped eating. U cannot try that wit poultry, else u go fear fear. . Anyway, there is no business that is entirely devoid of risks. Mercylicious u have spoken well.. |

excelsiorfarm: just to add a thing or two to what my bro wrote, poultry is more risky than fish farming, d consultant that gave the analysis above, especially in abuja, most likely isn't doing fish biz. A lot of fishes leave from lagos, ibadan , ogbomoso to abuja because of d ROI, and fish farming can be concluded as a biz with limited stress when all d parameters(knowledge, funds, water, feeding) are right. Every biz has its challenges, even sleeping has its challenges Spot on my browww.agricnetwork.com |

Ttalk: Having read up to this page i can say that i have completed my Fishery 101 and thanks must be giving to the gurus in the house who make this discussion robust, educative and informative, thanks to Robonski 15, Exellecorfarm, Abx 1, Juve farm, Phemmy, Ayosat and other gurus in the house.
This has led me into going into next stage by seeking practical consultation within my area in Abuja to know the viability of the business, this led me to a consultant with a degree in Fishery who express his reservation on fish farming in this part of the country for following reasons: According to him,
1. Fish business is more viable in the south compare to north 2. Earthen pond is better than concrete pond because of its ability to absorb wastes and less usage of water 3. The cost of foreign feeds has increased from N2500 to over N5000 in the last 10years without the correspondent increase in the cost of fish 4. The profit after the cost of feed does not measure with the input and labour 5. The same amount of input would generate more returns when ventured into poultry Although most his concerned have been discussed in the post above, yet the different in location south/north could make a big different in success or failure of catfish business. While i believe there exist different means of maximising profit among fish farmers in the south by the usage of local and formulated feed to reduce the expenses and increase the profit because of the availability of the components in different parts of the south, the same cannot be said about fish farmers in Abuja who largely depend on foreign feeds from inception to maturity.
How can a farmer in Abuja make profit despite the huge cost of foreign feed and non availability of local component to formulate local feeds that are less expensive?
Please i need answered to the questions from the farmers in Abuja and environs and other gurus i.e. Robonski, Exellecorfirm, Abx 1 and others who have been genuinely impacting, educating and sharing their knowledge free of charge on this forum
I intend rearing learning hatching to get my seed to be stocked in 2 10X10 concrete ponds beginning from January
Also when digging a borehole what should be the needed water level for catfish rearing, i heard of something like [neutral] dont really understand it
Also what is the cost effect of flow through system over concrete pond that uses aerator to supply the needed oxygen sorry for the late response..
1. we cant conclude that fish business is more viable in the south than north.. The price of feed in the north is a bit high with a corresponding increase in the price of fish..
2. Both type of pond culture are good, depending on the knowledge of operation. A farmer using a concrete pond will be doing well than another using an earthen pond if the right knowledge is not applied.. we have seen farmers loosing out in both earthen and concrete. All what we need is the right knowledge of the type of pond culture one wants to venture into.
3. The price of fish has increased in the past ten years, sometimes back a kg of fish was 250-300.. Though the price of fish has been static due to the monopoly of the market women.
4.depends on the overall management, if u don't play by the rules you loose out.
5. poultry has its own "wahala" i have met people who have vowed never to go back to poultry business again.. both fish and poultry has its do's and dont's.

Belexy: Wen is d price of fish likely to go up in Lagos to abt N500 per kilo? Its we the farmers that will have to dictate the price of fish not the market women.. Lack of cooperation has been the barrier in increasing the price of fish, we need to have a voice or the united market women keep dictating the price.. www.agricnetwork.com |

How many bonds and fishes can be comfortably reared using this available space? How much do you think it will cost me to build this level on this plot and do you think I can put up a viable fish farm on two plots of land? I will be very glad read your comments on this.
