I just discovered this thread today even though it has been going for a few years.It is full of knowledge and kudos to all who have contributed so far. I am hoping someone knowledgeable will be able to answer a few questions.

First this flow through versus recirculation debate. Without getting into which is better is it possible to set it up/construct so you can operate either as flow through or recirculation or some mixture of both systems


Please note I prefer to use plastic vats instead of concrete ,assume willing to invest in water/reservoir.

I have not got any practical experience but have done a few years reading on the subject online etc

Are there good quality and reasonably priced plastic vats in Nigeria?

Those market women/men are cheat, there are few Good ones, this is what I do when selling 2 them. 1st they don't come close 2 my pond, I have a space where dey will seat nd wait for me, while I bring the fish 2 them, it a serz work but it worth it, secondly, I do d weighing myself, 25k per weigh, I once sold 2 a woman, she came with a very big baff(Not sure of d spelling) she kept on putting d fish insyd d baff which wz already on dey scale, it weigh 51kg, I was nt satisfy I had to weigh it by myself it turns out 2 be 78 kg, 27kg wld ve been lost. It best one does dey weighing by ur sef.

How many bags of let's say...Vital feeds, (or any other not-so-expensive feed, which will still get the job done) will be enough for fingerlings to maturity?

From the comments so far, it seems that feeding is the financially challenging aspect of the business.

I'm still contemplating if it's a business I can engage in, considering I already have the main resources for startup.(Land and Borehole)

I intend to purchase an 18ft by 18ft collapsible pond, which I heard can Contain 2k fish max.
However, the cost of feeding seems to be the impending obstacle in this business.

Is there a shortcut to feeding the fish, or must one really budget big for their feeding?

I think its cost effective compared to concrete ponds.

It cost me about N700k to build a 3 units concrete ponds of a total capacity of 5,000 to table size. This floating cage system is a better and cheaper option. For fear of cannibalism stock at melange stage and feed regularly. We need to move fish farming back to the river, its far more cost effective.

My only fear is since its floating I hope those boys will not paddle it away at midnight. And in case of oil spill you may lose all your stock!

Hello Fish farmers in the house. I always read thru this thread with great joy and I am very appreciative of the gurus in the house who freely share their wealth of experience in this forum.

I am about opening a fish farm. I have already contracted a consultant to guide me through the process and site preparation is also ongoing. This consultant has prepared a feasibility report for me. One of the estimates in the report is that we can produce and sell up to two hundred thousand(200k) fingerlings at once in the hatchery. I found this estimate unrealistic.

Please the gurus, what is your take in this. Is this really possible?

How many melange size fishes is in a kilo?

Hello Gurus in the house, please I need your help on this as it is urgent!

Supposing I want to grow 10,000 fishes to melange size,
1. What's the size of concrete pond / ponds that'll contain the above number
2. The amount and cost of feed that'll be sufficient till that size (how many months too)
3. At maturity (in the melange size), how much is one sold for (irrespective of location, just estimate), how many pieces make up a kilo and how much it goes for.
4. If I choose to sell them dried, how many kilo will come out of 10,000 melange size of fish and how much does a kilo of dried fish go for?

Tho I have been a silent follower of this trend and I must confess that I have learnt a lot, may God bless those that have contributed in one way or the other on this trend.
I am a hatcher and I have been in this business for some period with a capacity of about 100k fingerlings. But dis problem don turn me to novice. Whenever I hatch I do have a smooth sailing till the 9th day, after den I start experiencing mortality and I have tried series of method and drugs but it not working out. I have wasted thousands of naira during dis period and I can't even boast of 1k fingerlings. I know some people out their are experiencing the same problem, so pls I need diverse advise and contributions on how I can scale through this hurdle.
My water ph is ok. Abeg I nid fast response frm my ogas.

Bros,as it is now melauge is more sought after,infact buyers now run away from Big (table size)fishes. If your fish is above 1.5kg,u'll hardly see buyer oh. The market is kinda saturated now,everybody is now into fish farming.

since i started raising melange, i have had no cause of regret table size is over saturated..

Hatch indoors and u can slightly warm d water by pouring in hot water before u place in ur fertilized eggs. Becareful so u dnt boil ur eggs oh The warm water needs to be evenly distributed.
If u are in d south west, you shdnt av much issues wt temperature for spawning but try to do it wen u anticipate a sunny day.

Hmmmm oga belexy, i will not advice him poring hot water because it can be detrimental, what he needs is to cover the hatching vat all round right, he can also use multiple lamps to control the temperature
