Jesusbaby6: Thank you for this formula, when formulated, how long will it last? is there any preservative added to make it last longer for like 2weeks or is it only for one day feeding.
God bless
I registered with agricnetworks but cannot login. it is telling me to check my cookie setting my cookies are enabled. what do i do? It can last up to two weeks with no special preservatives. Enable your cookies setting for agricnetwork or use a mobile phone if need be. www.agricnetwork.com |

omonnakoda: I just discovered this thread today even though it has been going for a few years. It is full of knowledge and kudos to all who have contributed so far. I am hoping someone knowledgeable will be able to answer a few questions.
First this flow through versus recirculation debate. Without getting into which is better is it possible to set it up/construct so you can operate either as flow through or recirculation or some mixture of both systems
Please note I prefer to use plastic vats instead of concrete ,assume willing to invest in water/reservoir.
I have not got any practical experience but have done a few years reading on the subject online etc
Are there good quality and reasonably priced plastic vats in Nigeria? How can I reach the "House Consultant" As a starter it will be better you start with flowthrough system though recirculatory has its numerous advantage like water management and stocking density, it's still a expensive and as a beginner start with plastic and run your flowthrough. There are reasonable plasticsc tanks like hart. www.agricnetwork.com |

OLAplusONE: Please what are those things to take into consideration when selling fish to buyers, coz I wl be selling soon and I've heard different kinds of antics played by those buyers?? Thanks quote from Tbagwell Those market women/men are cheat, there are few Good ones, this is what I do when selling 2 them. 1st they don't come close 2 my pond, I have a space where dey will seat nd wait for me, while I bring the fish 2 them, it a serz work but it worth it, secondly, I do d weighing myself, 25k per weigh, I once sold 2 a woman, she came with a very big baff(Not sure of d spelling) she kept on putting d fish insyd d baff which wz already on dey scale, it weigh 51kg, I was nt satisfy I had to weigh it by myself it turns out 2 be 78 kg, 27kg wld ve been lost. It best one does dey weighing by ur sef. Modify message I don't allow them get to my pond for any reason, I show them samples and weigh the fishes by myself to avoid any doubt. The market men/ women are terrible to d extent that they use diobolical means in cheating. We should be always vigilant and shine our eyes and never give them any iota of space at all.. we work hard to raise our fish for months with our hard earned money nobody should come and reap where dey didn't sow.. www.agricnetwork.com |

mercylicious: hello experienced farmers, sorry am asking too many questions. its cos i dont want to make any mistake. whats d mqximum no of fishes qnd earthen pond of 12ft by 12ft can take? sumone said its 500 fishes but that concrete of same size can take 1000 fishes. is it correct? The stocking density of an earthen pond is different from stagnant, flow through.. stocking density is between 50 fish per square meter for earthen pond.

Kingsteve: Serious question please. How many bags of let's say...Vital feeds, (or any other not-so-expensive feed, which will still get the job done) will be enough for fingerlings to maturity?
From the comments so far, it seems that feeding is the financially challenging aspect of the business.
I'm still contemplating if it's a business I can engage in, considering I already have the main resources for startup.(Land and Borehole)
I intend to purchase an 18ft by 18ft collapsible pond, which I heard can Contain 2k fish max. However, the cost of feeding seems to be the impending obstacle in this business.
Is there a shortcut to feeding the fish, or must one really budget big for their feeding?
Thanks, as I look forward to hearing from the experts. Cheers! It depends on the number of fish you want to stock to ascertain the number of bags to maturity. Feeding takes 70% of the cost of production and there is no shortcut in feeding, what you give is what you get. It's one thing to have the resources for start up and the technical know- how is another. I will advice you get Two collapsible tanks for sorting purposes. www.agricnetwork.com |

mozek24: I think its cost effective compared to concrete ponds.
It cost me about N700k to build a 3 units concrete ponds of a total capacity of 5,000 to table size. This floating cage system is a better and cheaper option. For fear of cannibalism stock at melange stage and feed regularly. We need to move fish farming back to the river, its far more cost effective.
My only fear is since its floating I hope those boys will not paddle it away at midnight. And in case of oil spill you may lose all your stock! Bros mozek u spent 700k for 3 units... Was it casted from button up? |

I carry yansh for Nija jare Just like what oga mozek and excelaior pointed out that security is the bane of this cage culture, it brings to mind a friend of mine who tried on a small scale two years back in warri. As he was planning on Harvesting so also the asawana boys were planning to harvest also Lool. They woke up one morning to see no single fish left. To eradicate theft one has employ the thieves to safeguard the cage. www.agricnetwork.com |

Willas04: Hello Fish farmers in the house. I always read thru this thread with great joy and I am very appreciative of the gurus in the house who freely share their wealth of experience in this forum.
I am about opening a fish farm. I have already contracted a consultant to guide me through the process and site preparation is also ongoing. This consultant has prepared a feasibility report for me. One of the estimates in the report is that we can produce and sell up to two hundred thousand(200k) fingerlings at once in the hatchery. I found this estimate unrealistic.
Please the gurus, what is your take in this. Is this really possible? It is possible by just like what excelsior pointed out that it depends on the overall management practices and more so you will encouter challnges which of course everybody does and especially in the hatchery operations. Sometimes the hatching might not be successful due to some of the factors excelsior pointed out. |

Supposing I want to grow 10,000 fishes to melange size, 1. What's the size of concrete pond / ponds that'll contain the above number 2. The amount and cost of feed that'll be sufficient till that size (how many months too) 3. If I choose to sell them dried, how many kilo will come out of 10,000 melange size of fish and how much does a kilo of dried fish go for?
Please help out a sister, thanks 1. Five 10 by 10 with 5 feet depth 2.budget #120 per one for three months. 3. #350 - #380 Get more info on melange farming www.agricnetwork.com |

talk2yemmie: @belexy thank u so much am so greatful @Robonski thanks too. Please I still dnt knw the current price of feed and the best one for now. Thanks It will be better you go to the feed store in your area to know the current prices as prices differ from locality. To the best of my knowledge there are no best feed( s) some may say coppens is the best, but u may still use coppens and make a loss and someone else might use vital and achieve results. what we should be concerned abiut with is the overall management. There are good feed out there ranging from multi feed, aqua, ranaan, coppens Ziegler etc. Replied your post on agricnetwork www.agricnetwork.com |

I am a hatcher and I have been in this business for some period with a capacity of about 100k fingerlings. But dis problem don turn me to novice. Whenever I hatch I do have a smooth sailing till the 9th day, after den I start experiencing mortality and I have tried series of method and drugs but it not working out. I have wasted thousands of naira during dis period and I can't even boast of 1k fingerlings. I know some people out their are experiencing the same problem, so pls I need diverse advise and contributions on how I can scale through this hurdle. My water ph is ok. Bros Robonski Bros Excel Bros Bellexy Bros Aquatic Bros Ayosat Bros Abyss Bros Fhemmy Bros tokugawa And all my senior bros I understand perfectly what you are experiencing, first off check your artemia, coz their are too many fake artemia in circulation.. Reduce your water volume a bit, use aqua-pro after one week and also a SMALL quantity of salt. you can also reserve a treated pond, after one week u transfer the fries to the pond. do constant flow through. www.agricnetwork.com |

Belexy: Hatch indoors and u can slightly warm d water by pouring in hot water before u place in ur fertilized eggs. Becareful so u dnt boil ur eggs oh The warm water needs to be evenly distributed. If u are in d south west, you shdnt av much issues wt temperature for spawning but try to do it wen u anticipate a sunny day. Hmmmm oga belexy, i will not advice him poring hot water because it can be detrimental, what he needs is to cover the hatching vat all round right, he can also use multiple lamps to control the temperature www.agricnetwork.com |
