Belexy: 300g Like i said earlier on it depends on some factors, raising a fish to 300g has its own running's/rules. Just like u cant buy fingerlings and feed with coppens when u are out of cash u sell as melange, u will run into a great loss, just like the guy i posted is ordeal who didn't even make upto the amount he bought the fingerlings after selling his fishes as melange. www.agricnetwork.com |
Fhemmmy: My Chairman, despite all that I know there are great and trustworthy Nigerians that we will feed Nigerians together. For sure bro, there are still some trustworthy people.. |
mozek24: I told somebody that in fish farming you hardly lose as long as your fish get up to 300g; cos at that weight even if you can't smoke, you can sell as melange and still make profit.Oga mozek, its not in all cases. www.agricnetwork.com |
Fhemmmy: That made the 2 of us, i am beefing you more than you can imagine . . . .If my Oga dey beef me wahala don dey be that o.. Abeg lets have a chat on phone www.agricnetwork.com |

retin01: my Oga inthe house the kiln and d aerator is ready but I will b going to somebody farm by next week to test d aerator in d vat. D kiln uses gas and charcoal ,and electricity to power d turbine. With time I will go 4double door kiln. NB Catfish smoking business is a booming industry recently but must of them are not properly processed. Majority of the smoke catfish in the local market are processed using ovens with firewood or sawdust which exposes the fish to a lot of smoke containing carcinogenic material called Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH). These substances can cause cancer in the long run for whoever is eating food materials exposed to them. This is one major reason why most of the smoked catfish produced locally can not be allowed to pass the US and UK border when one is doing a formal exportation ( watch-out for the next post to read about formal and information exportation) Apart from the fact that one can not export any fish containing high PAH, it is also very stressful and unhealthy for the person processing the fish. Considering the fact a lot of educated people are going into farming business and many of them that are fish farmers prefers to add value to their harvest rather than sell it to the market woman that end up pricing your harvest below cost of production. One of the few ways of adding value and making more profit from catfish harvest is by smoking and smoking should be done in the proper way using ovens that exposes the fish to zero or minimum PAH. This can only be achieve by smoking your fish with charcoal, gas or electricity. My bro i must commend your effort so far on this project this is wonderful.. This customized smoking kiln is a good means of adding value like u said. we should be looking at adding value to our product by smoking, filleting to sell either locally or internationally. overall packaged product sell more but the challenges are high and so are the rewards if the challenges are met. we should see beyond just selling to the market women and look at other alternatives in selling our product with higher returns.. @Retin01 have u fixed a price yet for the kiln and aerator? Pls do get in touch with me ASAP. www.agricnetwork.com

Tucoolz: i concure, with just 500 catfish i spent over 350000 to feed and those "eleja people came with thier charm and i sold at a terible loss it was when they have gone that i realised i have lost. even the mallams too can be very dubious, i carried my fish from my farm to meet them in arisekola market, we already agreed on the price but as soon as the fishes are out of water the price changes and u'll hav no option than to sell.My Goodness!!!! i just hope the 500 catfish is a typo error.. About this so called "iya eleja" women when i spoke about the charms they use in their fiendish act, most people didn't believe..its so dis heartening!!! "Marketing" is one issue we need to tackle, it is unavoidable, getting your sales and marketing right is crucial to the success of any business. I know with time we will have dedicated fish buyers from our networks. We have had quite a few dedicated buyers who contacted me from agricnetwork but only from 600grms downward "melange size" no matter the quantity but only within lagos and part of ogun state. Call or send me a mail if you want to harvest within that range. www.agricnetwork.com |

Price difference is just 32 naira per kg I will advice you give the fishes vital or top feed till they are three months old, then switch to durante sinking feed till harvest. At what month do u want to harvest? www.agricnetwork.com |
opes: please, can the local feeds produced by durantey be used instead? It is 5,750 per 25kg.Durante sinking feed is a good feed, i once used it and didn't disappoint, u can use it sir. www.agricnetwork.com |

mozek24: Dear gurus in the house I have a question, I have not used my hatchery for three months now and the place is also used as generator house (6kva petrol gen). I intend to hatch say next week. questions :I will advice you first fumigate but i don't really know any chemical/substance to use, someone can assist on this. wash your vat thoroughly with detergent and rinse well with water. Test the P.H of your water to ascertain its level if you need to treat the water or not. www.agricnetwork.com |
AgrotConsult: "Stop feeding your fish 24-48hrs b4 they are harvested, this allows them to ease their intestines n makes them beta able to survive the stress of handling & transportation. At least in this way, it will also save u some feeds that would have been doled out un-neccessary."Spot on.. i remember years back when i was about to sell my fishes, i fed them that morning with the assumption that by feeding they will gain some weight prior to sales.. When i began harvesting it turned out to be a mess, the feeds i gave them was just drooling out of their mouths and it was a total disaster. www.agricnetwork.com |

ugohs: THE GENERAL OFFICER COMMANDING 1000 ROBONSKI ARMOURED DIVISION I SALUTE U SIR.I am so delighted hearing this good news sir, you should give them artemia for 14 days then switch to 0.3mm for a week, then O.5mm for like a week plus. switch to 0.8mm to 1mm. It all depends on how fast they grow that will also determine when to change feeds.. keep up with good water management and low dirt in the vat www.agricnetwork.com |

fzero: Simple, detailed, wonderful, good, extra ordinary, awesome splendid. Dis is wat I hv been wanting 2 hear 4 d past two years, don't tell me grammer dis is what I hv been seeking to read not all these useless manual with big big grammer. Its just as if I should start shedding tears, fish business has done me shege 4 two years now. This is really an eye opener. Nobody is willing to tell me anytin abt this business na so so manual I dey buy with big big grammer until I read this article I hv lost some cool cash in dis fish farming and eventually packed up, but reading this article I am thinking of dusting my cloths and go back.Thank you very much sir!!! I will encourage you read through the thread and ask questions when necessary and kick start your fish farm to a greater height www.agricnetwork.com |
Belexy: Infact u just confirmed wat i av always observed. Dey are usually bigger and fatter dan d others. This is also what i have observed years back, it was this same light brown fishes that also changed my failure to success in fish farming. I bough some set they were all the same light brown and within 4 months i could see my money swimming in my pond .well i dont know why they tend to grow faster its just something i observed and i sticked to it.. www.agricnetwork.com |
Tbagwell1: That is d more reason y I prefer using fish weighing less dan 2kg for male is b'cos most of them usually have ds very tinny milt nd dark nd watery. As for stripping of d 5kg fish na 3 of us dey handle am.Chai three hefty men handling one fish ![]() www.agricnetwork.com |
Tbagwell1: Boss, thanks for answering this question, the brood stock I usually use to hatch are from 5kg above the females in particular, as for the male I use from 1kg -2kg, I ve also use 800gram male to hatch, it d same result I usually get. D eggs are sometimes green in nature. Boss am nt trying to say yhu are wrong. Thanks chairman the green eggs are good but the golden/light brown are better to me i prefer using them.. If u notice that there are some light brown catfish in colour not pure black, they tend to grow faster. Boss you spawn with females weighing 5kg? How do u manage to handle such broodstock for stripping considering the size.. I will prefer the male for that size because of the milt, but later changed my mind when i saw the tiniest milt twice in males above 4kg, i later realized its not by size. www.agricnetwork.com |
Tbagwell1: Top of the morning to you all, To all the gurus in the house, How does One identify A GOOD broodstock ? Or how does One know if d brood stock been used is Good or will produce quality seed? Thanks. Choose only male and female fishes that weigh above 1kg so that the fries will also grow into big fishes. some hatchers use brood stock of less than 1kg which is not good because the fries may tend not to grow well. Make sure the male organ “crosses” and its pink at the dot end. When pressing out the female eggs for “inspecting” choose only the female fish that have eggs that separate from each other and are golden in colour make sure that the tummy of the female fish slightly protrudes out, when placed flat-faced down Make sure that the outlet where the egg of the female fish will come out is slightly dark in colour. www.agricnetwork.com |

It is a welcomed development sir, i am also in support of it as long as it is driven to network and engage the youths to see the possible future with agriculture. We have to come together to be an agent of change and an example to other associations who have allowed greed and self contentedness to thwart their reason for existence.
