Johnnyessence: they are juveniles bro. bro johneey, as long as u buy juvenile and they cant pick 3mm they are not juvenile, rather fingerlings. that means u just bought fingerlings as juvenile at a high cost... Be wise brotherly. |

Belexy: This issue of age and size as per fingerlings and juveniles is really confusing and alot of hatchers seem to confuse eachother. I also need some clarification on this. For instance some hatchers will say fishes of 6weeks dat are very big will be sorted frm d pack of fingerlings and sold as post-fingerlings while its siblings are still refered to as fingerlings bcoz dey are smaller in size. Is, this right? Shd those fishes rightly be called post-fingerlings bcoz they are bigger dan d rest of d other fingerlings but yet just 6weeks old? Same thing happens with juveniles too. Just bcoz dey are bigger than the rest and look like d size of actual juveniles, dey call dem juveniles despite their young age of say 7weeks. I need some clarification on this bcoz in my opinion, its not right. #i dnt think we will call a short adult man of 30yrs a juvenile just because he is short and looks like a juvenile. majority of the hatchers lie a whole lot about age and co, this debate has been ongoing for a long period of time. How can all fishes in six weeks suddenly becomes fingerlings, its only the gullible buyers that will believe such info. At least at the 8th week and above they are ripe enough to be called fingerlings that can pick 2mm without hassles. U cannot get a standard juvenile that will pick 3mm at the 7th week, haba!!! at the 12th week from hatchery all the fishes should be ready to be sold as juvenile.. |

excelsiorfarm: who be your boss? Am not your boss. There is no magic about what they sell, indeed dutch /holland spp like durante , at times i go get mature fish from them if i want to breed, bro they have d name & those coming up , if not all, most sell bigger fish seed s sizes than them(that i had already confirmed), but our people blieve in name, hence u paid for buying a brand sometimes at the beginning of my post I sometimes use words like boss, oga , master, bro its just part of me.. Yeah they sell coz of their name not necessarily the product. |

excelsiorfarm: zartech dont sell broodstock, but d fishes is ok if u can lay your hands on it, if not satisfy , keep to raise & cross with your breeds Boss if we take a closer look from the rear view of these big farms, its still the same known fish that they sell. zartech sells dutch and holland of which they sell the fries as fingerlings for a high price. www.agricnetwork.com |

Ttalk: Pls house what is the standard size of fingerling and juvenile?
Some says fingerling is between 3-4cm and Juvenile 5-7cm while a respected contributor on this forum says standard juvenile should not be less than 5inch which is about 12-13cm.
I need a clarification on this please o yes bro. But it is better to use feed size as the measurement coz how many fingerlings can measure at a time. a standard fingerlings will pick 2mm without hassles. while a standard juvenile will pick 3MM comfortably. I visited a hatchery facility in texas on monday and they practiced the same thing.. though their operation is far far mordenize than ours. I grabbed some of their techniques which I plan on using. |

JuveFarms: Hello every member or guest of Agricnetwork forum, what am about to say must be said. Most of us fishfarmers might know it, while most of us shy away from it. This write up might help most intending farmers from buying experience with their hard earned money.
The most asked question is, if fish farming is so Lucrative why do people still loose their money. My people indeed its lucrative, but before you reap the gain you must pay your dues there are no short cut.
Most people if not all hopes that after 5-6months of stocking 2,000 fingerlings/Juveniles, they will achieve 2tonnes(2,000kg) which the equivalent in naira is #500 per kilo, #500 x 2,000kg = #1,000,000. Lets go abit further to calculate the cost of feeding, medication, logistics etc. 2,000 fishes will consume feed worth of btw #230-#250 each till harvest(Table Size), thats about #460,000-#500,000. Cost of 2,000 fingerlings/Juveniles will cost btw #15-#30 each (#30,000-#60,000). In summary total expensis be set @ #600,000 to achieve #1million naira. Thats not a bad business forecast.
Honestly, the major question is how many people achieve this amazing result. I will say only but a few, not lucky people but smart people. How can one learn to be a smart catfish farmer. Thats the million box question. I will summarize few steps below; How to become a smart fish farmer: - Be Patient - Dont be greedy - Employ a consultant - Seek God direction.
Be patient: Dont be in a hurry to cash in millions, thereby clouding your sense of Judgement. There is no easy route to success. Follow due process, prepare your pond properly, treat your pond properly, secure your pond properly.
Dont be greedy: Please as a new catfish farmer, without the aid of a trusted, experience, successful fish farmer as a consultant. Dont stock 12,000 fingerlings/Juveniles in a bid to get 12tonnes (12,000kg) which is an equivalent of #6,000,000.
Employ a consultant: Seek the services of a trusted, experience, successful fish farmer, directly or indirectly as a consultant. Please dont think you have read enough journals or attended enough seminars to avoid buying experience with your money. What you might offer a consultant wont be compared to what you might loose in the long run.
Seek God: Pray to God for directions, with God impossible is nothing.
In Conclusion, I will like to say seeds (Fingerlings,Juveniles,Jumbo) are the source of success or failure in catfish farming. Happy fish farming. Thanks for reading.

excelsiorfarm: bro if all man run from challenges of any biz, how do such build on experience, it is one thing to know & another to have experience, bro d guy no read your experience that birth this thread? Ask adenuga on his glo, he will tell all his initial challenge many dont know, though i would have written more, d best analysis can come when d bro evaluate d 150k loss, the juvenile is already 37.5k(i hope am correct), how many bags of feeds? At what cost?,let me share a man's experience, after knowing or measuring his fishes to be 500kg, someone came with his scale, measured it & it was barely 280kg, bought at that weight & left Hmmm 500kg and sold for 280kg with someone else scale .. let me also give you an example, last two years I was having some challenges in my hatchery, I spawned multiple times and nothing to show for it. I tried for over 4 months doing trial and error just to diagnose the problem. Did I lose money? Ofcourse I lost enough cash but I was determined to identify the problem. After a while I finally saw where the problem was coming from and I dealt with it. My next spawning was a success the profit I made doubled the loss I incured. We just have to face any challenge that comes our way in fish farming squarely. |

Fhemmmy: There is no doubt about that and i so much agree, however, as a business man, it is up to the seller to say NO to a deal instead of selling a lemon to the buyer . . . You as chairman robonski, i am sure you wont sleep at night knowing you have sold runts to someone all cos the person said he wanna pay 20 Naira instead of 25 Naira for a seed . . . It is at least better for the buyer to know what they are getting. It is always the way it is that a buyer will negotiate and it is up to seller to with respect say NO. Please note i am not saying seller MUSt sell at a loss, but dont sell runt to unsuspecting buyers Not everyone has the same mindset, as a business man I give my runts to the brood stock to feast on after the sales of the best I don't even negotiate price as I sell only the best. But for some others I guess they don't think of the aftermath of selling runts to farmers, which in turn backfires because when a farmer knows he bought runts from a suspected hatchery he won't go back. Even if the buyers pays a high amount Hw is he sure he is getting the good seed.. as some hatchers are damn dubious in dealing with client. TRUST is the key which is scarce in this present age. www.agricnetwork.fom |

Fhemmmy: While you make some sense, I would say too that it takes a useless and wicked master/ceaser to because of 5 Naira sell bad seeds..... nothing wrong in someone wanting a cheaper ways to do his business. A good business man or master should say NO instead of selling bad seed. In as much as I agree with you, but the truth is if you buy quality you get quality. qwantized: I was told it was primarily because I didn't sort and feed them well and then I made preparations and stocked again. This time, I made sure I sorted and all that but the outcome is not much different from the first one.
NOW MY OBSERVATIONS 1) it all begin from the breed of the juvenile stocked. Most Hatchers sort and stock the best shootouts for themselves and sell out the runts to the poor masses. BE VERY CAREFUL WHILE GETTING THE JUVENILE 2) SPACE: Fishes need space for optimum performance. DO NOT OVER STOCK THEM 3) Feed them very well but don't always leave remains of food in the pond. it will dissolve and reduce the oxygen content of the water 4) Make sure you SORT for even growth 5) Always change the water when its dirty.
I have learnt these but am not ready to experiment if for now. I need a break and I will be back later to fish farming (Maybe decades from now( It's a good thing you have learnt what you were supposed to do from the onset. Why wait any further.. Read up the journal of two youth corpers at www.agricnetwork.com who ran at losses but have resolved in their heart that they must succeed no matter the circumstances. Gather yourself together and get back to business my brother. |
