o9999,
Thanks for your comments and suggestions.
My fianceeée is from Nnewi South. Is N1000=00 naira really enough to enclose in envelopes considering the cost of things in Nigeria? I really don’t want to be embarrassed by my prospective inlaws.

I still have to buy 51 bottles of wine, 14 pieces of clothing. (cost yet to be determined)
I have not been given details of the bride price (dowry) as yet?

From my own conConservativetmate, i presume the traditional wedding alone will cost close to N1 million naira. By the time i add the registry and church wedding expenses, it may be appapproaching 2 (two) million naira.

This was the point i was trying to make to Romeo and Dede before they become abusive. Is this type of expenditure still warranted in the present day Nigeria. There are young boys and girls in my village in need of sponsorship for their education. I have relations who are widowed with no form of support.

I will feel uncomfortable supporting a tradition that puts our brothers undue pressure, some waiting till their late 30's and 40's before tying the knot.

It is not a case of whether i can afford it, i simply have a principled objection to these type of retrogressive traditions. Those of us who have been opportuned to be educated and travelled out are in a better position to fight these elders who use tradition to blackmail us.
Asking for advice is another thing but making wild allegations against Igbo boys is another thing entirely.

1000 naira is a big amount to put in envelope, considering what you'll get as "idu uno" on your wedding day. Besides weddings (traditional & white weddings) are done the same day lately as a money saving scheme. Same food and drinks and same venue. I don't know where you're from but i can deduce from your posts that they are very "bush" in handling communal issues. Ostracizing people for not providing goat and Co.

How much are your in-laws going to inject on your wedding day? My part of Igboland has quota for the in-laws on wedding days as regards food and refreshments.

You called our boys criminals because you found yourself cornered financially in your marital quest.

idiopathic,

I am 110% in support of your views on this issue of retrogressive, material-centric, insensitive, and backward aspects of our culture. We should not allow those so-called "elders", many of them common criminals who have participated in raping Nigeria's wealth, to tell us how to spend our hard-earned money, simply because we are getting married.

If I were you, I'll put a budget on the entire spending and stick to it. All those lists were not made by any god but by men! Fell free to trim those lists and cut out the "pork"! If you show your intention of spending within your budget and they adamantly refuse, you can scale down the whole thing, marry your babe and move on. If, unfortunately, your babe takes the side of those "greedy elders", just leave her alone and move on! Women plenty! You'll definitely get a better woman who'll be overjoyed to marry you.

I encourage you to act firmly and decisively on this matter.
You can only give such advice if you did a similar thing, until then "callate amigo".

cool

Let those idiotic traditionalist who brag about having money who have been brain washed by their village elders go ahead with the traditional wedding. While those who use their head and make right choices without having some one make choices for them opt out. After all there are two  types of people in this world. Those that make choices for themselves and those that let others make choices for them. Which one are you?

I wonder why people don't brag about how much they bought their wife from their elders. Maybe they are feeling quilty in engaging in such a rediculous act. It seems like is those hopeless greedy poor gold digging elders are the ones people are associating with to make decisions for them.

People should be able to freely marry a lady and give her family what ever he feels like not buy her at the auction held by the village elders.  So on the auction contract, is there a place were it states full refund quaranteed if the lady happens to be a bitch? I don't think so.

There are some dumb people in this forum who thinks that this is about having money. This isn't about money. Is about common sense. I know this family
here in Portland. Back home their family[Their dads side]caused them or something. So they actually didn't go home during christmas or any hollidays. They lived in the town and visited their moms place. The man have I think about three or more daughters right now that are at a marrying age. So all this bitch posters here in this forum who are brain washed to go along with what ever tradition the dumb village elders have set up. Where are this ladies suppose to have their traditional wedding if they chose an Ibo[Not Igbo] man? Certainly not at her moms place. I heared that there have been men who came to marry one of these ladies and because they believe in bullshit tradition, they went to her dads place to inquire about things. They learned that they are not welcomed at her dads place. So this dumb nigger got to backout of marriage just because they can't do traditional wedding. So does that mean all the ladies should stay single? Bullshit. What if I fall for one of these ladies. I will tell her is not good that her dads family hate them all. But as far as I am concerned Zap. your elders and they can go to hell. Who are they to cause a family from visiting their fathers land. Some times I feel sad for these ladies. This is serious, is not a joke.

You see anything that make sense, look at it any how it will still make sense. While bullshit things will always be bullshit untill is fixed or even eliminated entirely.

Also I read somewhere on this thread, some one stated that Ibo guys commit a lot of crimes. I totally agree with that. Imo state have more ritualist than any state in Nigeria unless you can prove other wise. Any one remember Otokoto era? If you don't there was this man named Chief Vincent Duru known as Otokoto [yahoo it up you will find more info.] who had a son named Obicheozo. The man had a restaurant in Orlu road. He is Ibo ofcurs, he kills his customers and sell their body parts and then burry their body at the back of the restaurant. You could be eating their paper soap and be eating somebody's body all along. That's why I don't like eating meat at public places, you really don't know what you are eating unless is chicken or something like that. One day, it was discovered. There was riot all over the city. A lot of ritualist houses were borned down. His son, there are women[stupid ones]all over him, he cruises on the road with fleet of luxury cars. Eventually this man, his son, and other ritualist that took part in the killings were killed. Most of them by hanging. If you think I am making this up read some of the story here.                                    [ http://www.thisdayonline.com/archive/2003/01/21/20030121fea01.html ] or [ http://magazine.biafranigeriaworld.com/aehirim/2003jul12.html]

For those people cursing others for say the truth. Mine is back to send. You curse it goes back into your family. I even think that if you combine all the ritualist in Nigeria all put together. Ibo ritualist still out number them. Why because their tradition wants them to be rich to be able to perform stupid things like traditional wedding. Even in Ibo land any man that doesn't build up a house is considered a failure. Who said you have to have a house to be a man? These things pushes Ibo guys to crime. They can't really get into federal positions because the Hausa and Yorubas have taken over the ownership of Nigeria but that would be a different thread.

Nigeria is a sad place and will continue to be.
Just when you thought that dumbs are no more in Nairaland another one will just pop out from nowhere sad sad

I can understand that your sisters are finding it hard to get a husband because of the "Ban" from the father's family members. pele!!

You think you don't need a House to be a man? You are a big JOKE.

Dede 1,
Are you calling a man working very hard and earning between N30 000=00 to N50 000=00 naira?
It is this culture of worshipping wealth above all other values in Igbo land that pressures young men to take risks that land them in trouble with the law.
Which ethnic group has the most numbers of 419 fraudsters, the most number of prison inmates or prisoners on death row. Igbo's are way ahead of the curve.
We need to examine our culture critically as it is beginning to result in negative social repercussions.
Dude if you don't have money to marry stay fu-cking single and stop this your bullshit of Igbo bashing on every thread that has Traditional marriage attached to it. Are you on some cheap dope?

Maybe your brother is an inmate or 419 mega star. But don't come in here spewing nonsense about Igbo people. When did you count the number of 419 perpetrators in Nigeria to determine the ethnicity on the lead? I doubt if you are Igbo, Mgbo piawapu gi isi angry

Hello Nairalanders,
In as much as i support some of our traditional practices, we need not allow it rule our lives and it should be modified in accordance with the changing times.
For example, in the course of our collective history, we have had some practices that have been stopped e.g.
1) Polygamy used to be our tradition, but now in decline.
2) Osu caste system is still practiced in several Ibo cultures. Obviously, we all know this is the worst case of apartheid.
3) Throwing away twins was once widely practiced in some areas.

The high bride price and pressure to excel in Ibo culture is one of the reasons a lot of Ibo boys take high risks in order to succeed in life. Unfortunately, this has unintended consequences such as disproportionate representations of young Ibo boys in prison all over the world.
May Amadioha strike some senses into your stupid head for making that assertion. And by the way we are Igbos and not Ibos. Anuofia!!

Prof. Iwu is just one of the threats.
the past administration used many weapons of mass destructions in form of learned and wise/intelligent men.
to obj and his supporters, specialists in different fields were used eg prof iwu for inec, ribadu for efcc, el rufai for fct, bode george for npa and kayode for communication.
they were all good but for nigeria to move forward, obj and his men shld give room to other people for the continuation of this trial and error formular.
removing prof iwu alone will not do the magic rather removing obj from anything that has to do with leadership in nigeria and bringing in fresh ideas.
fresh ideas include the removal of yar adua and organising a free and fair election that will simply represent the people's mandates.
Iwu paid Area Boys? Iwu gave salt to village women? Iwu snatched ballot boxes? Iwu brought cultism into politics? Iwu gave guns to many youths to maim and kill people on election days? Iwu bought my vote with 200 naira?

You folks are not even serious! Truth shall all man free in Nigeria.

chidichris:
mikeansy,
am sorry, i always take u beyond ur reaches but unfortunate there is nothing i can do about that. i will advise u to go back to school [/b]as we cannot sail on the same level.
well, i have decided to be a little kind with u by a way of a brief lecture.
since 1999, nigeria has been under the leadership of a political party known as PDP - peoples democratic party. as a political party, they have board of trustees and this board is like the [b]excutive
arm of the party with the responsibility of making decissions for the party. on the head of these board of trustees, is a chairman of the board. when obj failed in his third term, he quickly amended the constitution of pdp on the issue of the chairman board of trustees. the only person qualified to be the chairman of this board must be a former president who is a member of the party and with this, obj is the only nigerian with this qualifications.
most pdp members who left the party were not comfortable with the idea of one person being qualified to be the chairman of the bot in a democratic setting.
my dear mikeansy, i hope with these few points of mine, i have been able to convience and not confuss you that obj did not only impose yar adua on nigeria and nigerians, he equally made himself a criminal chairman of pdp bot and thereby maintain his inordinate ambition to die in power.
please to avoid this stress of lecturing u free of charge next time, u can try the children's department of this forum.
have a nice day.
i hope you are well informed that obj is still arround and actively involved in the criminal affairs of this country. do not be decieved, he may be behind the odeals of ribadu because tafa balogun and atiku were once his close pals but he is such a dirty minded criminal.
Bad writing skill and he's a professor shocked shocked

@Africason
With due respect, I think you re an alarmist. Was there no electoral fraud before Iwu became INEC chairman? or was Iwu electoral body's chairman in 1979, 1983, 2003 and 2007? I think criminalizing Iwu is like treating HIV/AIDS with panadol. But it is a typical Nigeria way of pining the blame on someone's else except ourselves. Unfortunately some nairalders are product of this sick system.

From available facts, there was no single election in Nigeria recorded history that is fraud free, the difference is only in degree. Right from 1959 elections have been rigged in this country irrespective of who is the chairman of the electoral body.

By the way, does that means that AC, ANPP and other parties did not rig election in their domain in 2007? I voted in Lagos state and I can testify that AC rigged election massively, electorate were given money while we were still on the queue or is it not the same thugs or area boy or alimanjiri that rigged for party A, not the one rigging for party B? The difference is which side of the divide a thug is at a particular point in time. This is a fact, every party rigs election in Nigeria, even the party's flag bearer cannot stop them, it is part and parcel of Nigeria electoral poiltics. Hence it is a matter of which party can outdo the other at any point in time.

Considering Nigeria political culture and terrain, PDP would still have won 2007 election, and I think they are very foolish to have engaged in massive rigging the way they did. Giving the circumstances of the 2007 general election no other party prepared enough to win the general election other than PDP, to have believed AC or ANPP will win would ve been living in a dream land. As at that material time Atiku was too much engaged by OBJ govt to ensure that should the court clear him, he would not have the necessary preparation for wining the general election. Or is it Buhari who can not boast acceptability in all geopolitical zones of the country that would ve won that election?

In fact, except for the anti-obasanjo sentiment Atiku and Buhari did not do enough to win the presidency. But trust Nigeria, they don't treat the sickness they only treat symptons, that's why anybody could have believed that Iwu is a threat to our democracy. Perhaps, Iwu is also responsible for Nigeria not having electricity and bad roads and dilapidated health centres in Nigeria. Nigeria will only move forward the day we examine ourselves as a nation and stop behaving like a curse people.
Thanks for educating those fools that thnk Iwu is the problem.

I don't think he has a point.

After all, that part isn't supposed to be a part of Delta State.
What is Delta? I am hungry for a concise meaning wink. Maybe it means Itsekiri? or Urhobo or even Ijaw. Peace can only come to that region the day they start loving each other. With so much hatred and boundary disputes amongst them i wonder even if they succeed in sidelining the Aniomas from holding any meaningful position in that state that there will be peace among the rest ethnicities.

otokx:
The other day a colleague of mine named obi claimed she is not igbo but from delta anioma or something. I just shook my head and went away.
