PoliticsNigeria’s Cycle Of Militancy And Our Habit Of Selective Outrage by romeocares2(op): 9:36pm On Dec 11, 2025
I am, by birth and experience, a son of the Niger Delta—a region whose creeks once echoed with the chants and gunshots of militants who took control of almost every waterway and settlement. In those years, nothing was truly hidden. Everyone knew who the militants were, where they operated, and how they organized themselves. Even the silence of the elders often spoke louder than a thousand declarations.

One of those elders, Chief Edwin Clark, CFR, CON, became the principal mediator between the Niger Delta militants and the federal government. He did not stand alone; there were others who played similar roles. But the point is clear: we all knew the actors, and we knew the terrain. We lived with the contradictions.

The same pattern unfolded in the South-East with the rise of IPOB. Again, the communities were not blind. They knew the boys, their hideouts, their strategy, and their influence. The devastating Monday sit-at-home order—which has impoverished many families and led to the destruction of lives and property—did not emerge from nowhere. It grew in full public view. Yet, within the region, many still refer to the group as “our people,” “freedom fighters,” or “aggrieved sons of the soil.” As an African proverb says, “The one who lives in the house knows where the roof leaks.”

Today, the North is grappling with its own hydra-headed problem: banditry. And once again, the cycle repeats. Sheikh Gumi has become, to many, the Northern version of Chief Edwin Clark—a negotiator, an interpreter, a reluctant mediator. Whether people admit it or not, many communities in the North also know who the bandits are, where they camp, and the forests they dominate. They know the routes used to hold and transport hostages. It is an open secret, the kind that Nigeria manufactures in surplus.

Yet, when Gumi speaks, or when politicians from the region attempt engagement, many Nigerians—especially from other zones—are quick to brand them as traitors, accomplices, or incarnations of evil. But this indignation is often selective. It conveniently forgets the Niger Delta’s own past, and it overlooks the South-East’s ongoing reality.

This is precisely why the outrage rings hollow.

From afar, every armed group is a terrorist organization.
But up close, many communities rebrand them as “activists,” “agitators,” “our boys,” or “defenders of the land.”
Nigeria has perfected the art of renaming criminality once it speaks our dialect.

There are Nigerians who accuse Peter Obi almost daily of refusing to denounce IPOB strongly, even though the group is proscribed and has inflicted severe economic and human costs on the South-East. But many of these critics come from regions that once shielded, justified, or weaponized their own armed actors.

We cannot continue to run a nation where everyone’s saint is another man’s sinner.

I write not to exonerate any group—far from it. I support none of them. Emotions may occasionally tug at one’s conscience, but sentiment must not replace truth. My intention is to expose our national habit: the tendency to condemn others’ militants while canonizing our own.

Nigeria cannot achieve genuine peace until we confront this selective morality. As another proverb says, “The farmer who ignores the locusts in his own farm should not mock the neighbor whose field has been eaten.”

Today, every region is nursing its own locusts. Yet every region pretends its own pests are butterflies.

If Nigeria must break the cycle of violence, we must first break the cycle of hypocrisy. Only then can we craft a permanent solution to the security challenges that plague us—one rooted in honesty, justice, and collective responsibility.

Until then, we will continue dancing in circles, like a goat tied to a tree, believing it is making progress simply because the rope is long.

I was expecting to see huge pot holes on the road with pools of water. Oya show us the road Okoroacha built with Asphalt in Imo state. We know the real enemies of Nigeria are you guys doing federal road construction and maintenance year in year out. Lagos Benin road is under construction every year with out end. You guys have been doing Lagos Ibadan expressway since Obasanjo time and still have not finished. Look at Apapa Oshodi expressway, I am sure that road will not need reworking for years. If any, it will be minor repairs just as you have it in Ebonyi State roads today.

Do we have any Nigerian Sport Wear brand. Where are even the clothing brands. Where are our brands of anything. We all glorify foreign everything. Today we are crying for exchange rate. Naira is not strong because government in Nigeria at all levels buys only foreign in everything. The day Nigerian government decides to buy Nigeria, that day, you will see all factories to manufacture everything will spring up overnight. Nigerian have the money to invest. But they will only invest if they have guaranteed patronage. The governments at all levels are the biggest buyers in the economy. The biggest buyers is the one who dictates the flow of the market. If leaders start visiting local tourist locations for holidays, everyone else will follow and more locations will spring up. But all they do is to promote foreign tours. And want the citizens to do otherwise. Na lie. It won't happen. We all here. 3million pieces sold for just 10k per one set gives you 30billion Naira. Meanwhile, NFF is getting less than 3billion or just 10%

When Buhari appointed 99% Muslims in his government, MURIC was quiet. This is Nigeria. Justice should not have religious colorations. What is right should be universal. MURIC actually said that Buhari has a constitutional rights to appoint capable people to work with him.

This man should also have attacked CORONAVIRUS that prevented everybody from praying at the Church or Mosque for the last 4 months. This time table is just as it has always been for the last 30yrs. No need for all these incitements. Nigeria surely will be united and overcome all these parochial, divisive, hateful, and inciting leaders.
