Christianity Etc › Re: Does "Islamic" Terrorism Really Stem From Islam? Or Is It All Propaganda? by RosaConsidine: 3:12am On Jun 09, 2017 |
I've not read all the pages on the thread but I'm quite disappointed already. Not in the OP or the OP's assertion but in most people's responses. I understand that there are certain emotions we feel when certain topics are raised but it is important to know when to set emotion aside and have a reasonable, rational discussion instead of casting aspersions, throwing insults or dismissing the OP's points of view as valid or invalid without first considering the merits or lack of thereof especially considering the OP was not even confrontational in the first place.
If some of you don't know how to have civilized discussions, here are a few tips 1) Listen to the opposing party's point of view. This is important not just because the person might just convince you but if you want to stand any chance of convincing the person that he/she is wrong, you would first need to understand what their argument is.
2) Set aside sentiment and emotion and discuss the topic at hand without resorting to insults and outright dismissals of opinion.
3) Offer a reasonable and reasoned rebuttal in a format that is not confrontational
These three are basically how mature minds discuss or argue. It's children that dismiss opinions without listening or offering well thought out responses. |

I'm torn.
On one hand, I like the idea of a convicted person who has received judgement and and punishment to be able to move past that onto a normal life where all that happened before is history. On the other hand though, I'm worried that someone that has been convicted of financial impropriety being given a platform and a place of prominence might pass the wrong idea across to younger people.
Really don't know what to feel. She looks good though. |

Weeellllll, going by semantics alone, they really didn't make any promises. "I would like to", " I desire to" and "I promise to" are three different things. From the quote, Fashola said "the TCN has expressed a desire to....". So technically, it's not a promise.
Still feel Fashola is a disappointment as far as power is concerned tho. |

Nigeriadondie:
First time to be the first to comment on Nairaland. Osibanjo nothing to celebrate for the common man on d street. If u do ur part at d federal level and it is not complemented by state governors with monthly allocation, bailout funds, internally genrated funds, security votes then it is nonsense. U promised to fight corruption yet not a single prosecution, all the monies recovered where owned by ghosts. There has been no reduction in the cost of governance at all levels. The national assembly have been chopping constituency allowances with no projects to show except to buy fleet of exotic cars to flaunt like Dino. Osibaba no hope ooo. All this una talk for Democracy or Independence day na usual yarn wey we do tire to hear. What we want is together with d APC led national assembly are as follow: 1. Let the national assembly make corruption a death sentence. China is doing it and we can see where China is now. 2. Cut down d size and cost of governance. To this effect we want a unicamaral legislature with far less pay. So many rich countries have far lower paid legislature. http://www.economist.com/blogs/graphicdetail/2013/07/daily-chart-12 The US with a landmass of 9,147,590 sq km and 6 time zones has a mere 50 states each with 2 senators per state a total of 100 senators while Nigeria with just 923,768 sq km and 1 time zone has 36 states and 3 senators per state making it a total of 108 senators. 3. Abolish constituency allowance cos it is never the constitutional duty of national assembly to finance projects. It is an anomaly 4. Remove security votes for governors it is a sheer waste of resources. 5. Reduce the number of states to 6 states cos 36 states each with their state houses of assembly is aa colossal waste. 6. Revamp Ajaokuta steel complex and other steel mills like Aladja in Delta, Osun state. 7. Build new refineries from d scratch. 8. Revamp agriculture and mechanize it 9. Develop robust social security system to cater for d unemployed, aged, disabled as it is in advanced countries. It is possible afterall all the billions and trillions hidden in peoples home can finance it rather than for it to be in the hands of a few widening gaps between rich and poor. It is very possible and workable. 10. Education should be well funded and aimed at being self reliant technologically. Hence there should be close synergy between universities, polytechnics and research institutes. The Iranians under years of Western sanction did it so d Indians are success stories. 11. Revamp the power sector 12.Or we divide peacefully. USSR did it peacefully, Norway and Sweden did so peacefully, Czechoslovakia into the Czech Rep and Slovakia did same. So no point deceiving ourselves in a marriage of strange bed fellows. Best wishes to all. Plenty to agree with here |

Christianity Etc › Did/does God Intend For The Earth To Be Everlasting? by RosaConsidine(op): 4:53pm On May 28, 2017 |
This is a bit of a follow up to my earlier thread ( https://www.nairaland.com/3826091/what-point-life) but I feel this is a similar but different line of thought and should be treated as such. Now, I'm not quite certain of what the timeline of some biblical events is (whether Lucifer rebelled against God before creation, whether both happened simultaneously or Lucifer's rebellion came after creation) but what the Bible does say at least are that 1) Lucifer Rebelled 2) God created earth and man 3) The devil tempted man causing him to fall Asides these though, I can't help wondering: what was God's plan for earth as at creation? Did he create it to be everlasting, without end, going on and on and on interminably? If this was the plan, then man was never going to heaven. Man would always remain on earth and God in heaven, end of story. On the other hand, did he plan for an end to the earth so man can join in him in heaven? Then the fall of man can be construed to be God's plan all along to get kick-start the process that would ultimately result in the destruction of earth and moving deserving mankind to heaven to be with him forever. Thoughts? |
Christianity Etc › Re: Methuselah: Do You Believe His Story Of 969 Years? by RosaConsidine: 2:49pm On May 28, 2017 |
oweniwe: Times have really changed.
You cant compare the physical fitness of ppl in the bible ...even 18th century ppl to the fitness of ppl today.
People develop according to their physical environment.
If your environment is hard, your body & spirit will be hardened.
Minus the savage wars....
.You'll definitely live longer. Actually, we live comparatively longer than people in the 16th, 17th, 18th centuries and so on. Why? Lots of them didn't even survive infancy. Read about a lot of kings and emperors and you'll find that many of them had lots of siblings that all died, usually from disease. Simply put, they couldn't cure what they were afflicted with - and it killed them. Illnesses we take for granted now like malaria, typhoid, even chicken pox and measles ensured that lots of kids did not make it to their teenage years. Even amongst those that did, others still succumbed to other illnesses. We have found cures to a lot of these illnesses which is why we now take it for granted that a child that is born would at least live to middle age. Forget all those that say people are dying a lot earlier now - people are actually living much longer than they would have - which is why there are more people to put pressure on earth's limited resources. |
Christianity Etc › What Is The Point Of Life? by RosaConsidine(op): 2:42pm On May 28, 2017 |
So I was watching a series of shows about prophecies concerning the end of the world, Armageddon and all that and I couldn't help asking myself: what really is the point of all this? Why are we here if all of this will still be destroyed at the end. I mean, we are born, we grow up and spend much of our life building ourselves so we can leave legacies behind, legacies that will ultimately all be wiped away. If we are looking at it from a purely scientific point, then there is no point. We are basically a cosmic mistake that will eventually run out of time and existence. However, if we are looking at it from a religious point of view, then there has to be a reason, a point for being here at all. I mean, why can't we just cut the whole middle period between being created and the afterlife (which is being alive here on earth) and just go straight to the afterlife? We work all our lives to build houses, buy cars, land and all kinds of things but science and religion agree that one day, all of these will be wiped away. So what is the point of being here in the first place? |

Christianity Etc › Re: Gullibility Of Nigerian Christians - A Case Of Despair by RosaConsidine: 1:02am On May 25, 2017 |
MZLady39: There's just no way you can paint Christianity in Nigeria with one long stroke though brother.
You mean to tell me that out of all the hundreds of thousands of churches in Nigeria, one can't find at least 50-100 churches that try to follow God's Word (in an honest & simplistic manner)....without all of the pomp and glory
It would be like me judging Nigeria based on the lovely folks on NL. Sure there are some mean, judgemental, callous, rude and irritating folks on here. Sometimes I don't even believe they're real. But I told myself that those types of people couldn't be the "only" people on here...I just have to keep searching. Though I can only count the kind people I've met on "1" hand so far, it's still good enough for me not to base my perception of Nigeria on what "a whole lot of folks" do & say on here.
But of course, you have the right to believe how you so desire. You don't have to always throw out the baby with the bath water though.... The problem though is not with the pastors. Starve a plant of nutrients and it dies. Starve a fraudulent pastor of congregation or funds and he'll close up shop. The problem is with the congregation who personally don't even try to have some sort of personal communion with God or basic understanding of how the physical world works. They don't want to think for themselves. Sometimes, I even think those self acclaimed men of god deserve the money they get from their congregation as just payment for thinking for them. Churches keep springing up everywhere and few seem to wonder why lots of pastors aren't encouraging people to pastor themselves. Most people's Bibles are just accessories - one of those things to show the world that they're "good people". So long as God wants to interact with every human then it follows that he is accessible to every human. I won't lie, the Nigerian sion of religious piety is baffling. |

I mean, if he had championed the call for a more equitable treatment of Igbos while governor, I could be less skeptical. This however......nooooo, I don't think this is sincere. |
