nwanyionitsha:Ikechukwu Anyene HOT SEAT Nigerians in S’Africa are being killed for exposing drug dealers –Anyene, President, NUSA Published August 12, 2017 In this interview with GBENRO ADEOYE, the President, Nigerian Union South Africa, Mr. Ikechukwu Anyene, speaks on drug trade and crimes among Nigerians in the Rainbow nation Did you hear about the shooting at a Catholic church in Anambra State, where 13 persons were killed and about 27 others injured? I heard about the terrible incident; we have not experienced this kind of thing before in a church. Yes, we heard about it. The perpetrators of the act were allegedly looking for one Aloysius Ikegwuonu, aka Bishop, a suspected drug lord in South Africa, who allegedly swindled some people out of a lot of money. Do you know him in South Africa? First, government officials and law enforcement agents should make fewer statements and do more investigations. I am aware that there have been series of killings suspected to be linked to an issue between some Nigerians here and it has been going on for about two years. We also heard that most of the people that have been killed are from Ozobulu in Anambra State, where the incident occurred. But we didn’t get involved in the matter because as a Nigerian union, we don’t get involved in resolving such matters, especially matters that have to do with drugs, crime and so on. But we heard that Ozobulu town unions in South Africa had tried to resolve the issue and had even taken it down to their village in Nigeria. I think their traditional leader was involved at a point, but it didn’t yield any result because the killings continued. It is just unfortunate that it led to the killing of innocent people in the village in Nigeria. This is what we know. What is the matter about? There are speculations all over the place but I think the best thing is for the government and the security agencies to do proper investigations. I think a lot of Nigerians have been killed already. There are speculations that it involves two guys in prison and there are also people involved, who are not in prison. There are a lot of speculations. As the Nigerian Union South Africa, when the killings started, we wrote to the High Commission to see what could be done to arrest the situation. I think the commission did its best but the killings continued. It is just unfortunate that it had to go this way. The killers were reportedly looking for the suspected drug baron, Bishop, who we understand built the church where the incident happened. Has he also given donations to NUSA or other organisations in South Africa? More in Home We may start selling petrol above N145 –IPMAN Slain Saudi journalist Khashoggi’s children paid by kingdom -Report Stock investors lost N158bn in March, market slumps by N48bn Buhari orders reversal of State House Medical Centre to clinic We may start selling petrol above N145 –IPMAN I am not aware of that. As for the union, he has not done anything (for us). Do you know him? I know him facially; if I see, I will recognise him but I don’t know him too well. Even before his picture was being circulated around, I would be able to identify him. But as I said, I don’t know him deeply or have his phone number. I hear more about his property in Nigeria but I don’t know anything about anything he has here. I’m not sure; he may be doing things here without my knowledge, but I don’t know of any here. You said you could recognise him which means you must have met before. Can you recall your encounter with him? What happened? I saw him at a function I attended about two years ago. I had been hearing the name – Bishop’. So at the function, someone pointed him out that he was the bishop. So, that was how I was able to recognise him. Drug peddling is a problem in South Africa. How big is the problem? Yes, it is a big problem here but it is not a problem that is peculiar to Nigerians. There are drug peddlers from all nations but it is just that Nigerians (involved) make so much noise. I don’t believe that Nigerians are the ones that commit most crimes in South Africa, but it is a problem. Many people have blamed Igbo people in South Africa for the situation, saying more Igbo are involved in drug business there. What do you think? There is no census yet of Nigerians in South Africa but it is assumed that Igbo are more in number in the country. But I think it will be a mistake as leaders of the community to narrow the issue of crime to a particular tribe because, at the end of the day, you find out that you see people of all tribes that commit these crimes. They say it is the Igbo people in South Africa that are giving Nigeria a bad image. Are you not concerned about this as you are also Igbo? In the cases we have attended to, yes, I agree with you, there have been more Igbo people accused of drug peddling. But you will find out that in such communities also, there are about 90 per cent Igbo people (out of the Nigerians) there. That is how it is here. But we have had problems of crime including drug-related offences involving people of all tribes. Yes, Igbo people are more in South Africa and the majority of the cases we address involve them. What is your union doing about the situation? I have spoken to Ohanaeze Ndigbo in South Africa here and engaged them. I have told them to do more. I have spoken to their leaders and also to the leaders of Yoruba community here, to tell them that everyone should do more to help combat crime, whether drug-related or other forms of crime that are soiling the image of our country and our people here. What we have been doing for some time now is to talk to our communities across South Africa. We call them wards of Nigerian union. What we do is to engage our leaders in those communities and then link them up with local community leaders, who are South Africans. We have been able to arrange for them to work together. We have done it in Kuruman and Klaafontein communities – the two communities, where quit notices were recently issued to Nigerians. We successfully resolved the problem and the quit notices were withdrawn. So we have tried to connect our leaders with local community leaders in these places and many other towns. What we do is to encourage our leaders in the cities and towns to work closely with the communities to fish out the bad elements so that Nigerians that are law abiding are not affected when there are problems. I think it is a successful strategy because it has been working. Among other things we are doing, we have been recommending to the (Nigerian foreign) mission here what can be done to deal with this problem. It is becoming a menace. As people that live in the community, we want to do more to make sure that Nigerians that are not law abiding, if possible, are removed from this society. We started campaigns against drugs and so on two years ago at the national level and some of our wards and provinces have keyed into it and the campaign is getting results. What we do is to work with the local people and the civil society organisations where we live, to fight crime together and it has been working. It has been yielding results. You said you have spoken to Ohanaeze Ndigbo there and other groups, do you think they have been doing well in tackling the problem going by the drug wars? It is not easy and you have to also understand that the work we do here is not paid for – it is an unpaid job. The communities spend their time and their money and nobody is paying for that so they do what they can do. We encourage them to help us make sure that the image of Nigeria is improved upon in South Africa. And in NUSA, we don’t see Nigerians in the perspective of Igbo, Yoruba, Hausa or Niger Delta. No! We provide leadership where necessary, so we try to engage the leaders of tribal organisations to help us here and there and they do render some help. You mentioned that you met Bishop two years ago so it appears that the Nigerian community there knows one another. Why is it that the Nigerian community doesn’t point out those involved in crime to the South African authorities or do you cover up for one another? Don’t you have a system by which the Nigerian community weeds out the bad eggs among them? Nobody can cover people up, but like I said, regarding some areas where we have worked, we connect our leaders in the communities to local community leaders so that they can work hand in hand to ensure that they combat crime, and not just crimes committed by Nigerians, but also crimes committed by other nationals, including South Africans. Also, the issue of reporting issues is not practicable. I don’t think it is even happening in Nigeria itself and it doesn’t mean that people in Nigeria don’t know criminals. But the issue is that there has to be protection. A lot of people have been threatened and killed for doing certain things in this country, and not just by Nigerians, but in some cases, it even involves the police here. Witnesses have been killed. I can remember two instances where witnesses were killed; they were shot dead and nothing happened. So where there is no proper protection for witnesses or whistle-blowers, you don’t expect people to just snitch on others. I don’t know, people may be doing all they can. But like I said, we are working with the police and also, we cannot go into details of what we do. Do you know the number of Nigerians that have been killed in this drug war in South Africa in the last two years or so that you said it has been on? I don’t have the exact number of deaths suspected to be linked to this feud, but it is not less than 10. I am not sure of the exact number, but it is a very serious problem. What do you think is the solution to solving the problem as we understand that Nigerians now control the drug business in South Africa? The police have to do more because the place where they sell the drugs is a public place. So, it is surprising that the police have not yet closed down the place. If they are doing what they should be doing, I don’t think that place, where drugs are being sold, will still exist because of all these killings. The place is a notorious place, so it is surprising that things are still happening there. Also, in my opinion, if the people involved in the negotiations, especially in their villages in Nigeria, did all they could have done, maybe the war would not have deteriorated to this level. But I think the matter is purely a security issue for the law enforcement agencies. The ordinary citizens can only assist, the police must lead. There are problems of informants’ identities being leaked here and there, so leaking information about people can be a very dangerous thing to do here. At the end of the day, the issue rests on the law enforcement agents. And now that the (Ozubulu) incident has happened, they should do something about the problem. I think the governor (Willie Obiano) himself said there was a feud between two brothers, so I think since there are people that have information (on the matter), they should do more. What place in South Africa did you say should be closed down because drugs are being sold there? The place is called High Rise. They used to call it Sands Hotel; the whole area should be closed down. Chipink:TheCable HomepageViewpoint The Igbo crime culture Fredrick Nwabufo in On the GoTop StoriesViewpoint In the sweltering heat of a serial lynching and killing of Igbo citizens in Asia in 2013, I wrote an article entitled, ‘The Igbo fallacy’. In it, I appealed to the Igbo to de-emphasise the culture of profligacy, decadent opulence, debauchery and vanity which fuels the pursuit of crime by their own. I am compelled to revivify the article here, but with a few adjustments. I say it again; the Igbo take the inglorious front row in certain crimes – drug peddling, armed robbery and kidnapping – at home and abroad. In August 2016, an Igbo drug dealer was guillotined in Indonesia. But his funeral in Anambra was a shin-dig of celebrations. He was even described as a “hero” by his kinsmen. Once again, an Igbo kidnapping lord, who unleashed barbarity and savagery on many Nigerians, has steadied attention on the “special” crime proclivities of the ethnic group. I will not dwell on this; I will zero in on Igbo criminality abroad, and take a slight detour home. As a matter of fact, a good number of Igbo youth in Asia are into crime. It was reported sometime in the year that the India police said all Nigerians – Igbo, of course – in their country were drug dealers. Although, this is questionable, it cannot be entirely repudiated. Arguably, the reason for Igbo sojourning – to even the remotest of places in the world – has been attributed to their much vaunted entrepreneurial spirit. The truth is that this claim is enclosed in heavy, meaty layers of fallacy like the entrails of burger. Inasmuch as the “entrepreneurial sojourning” thread cannot be utterly pooh-poohed, it is judicious to explore other reasons why the Igbo are peripatetic. First, in Igbo ethology, it is a cringing evil for a native, man or woman, to commit a “stigmatised” crime (Alu) such as armed robbery, drug-dealing, etc at home. This is not an obviation of abhorrent crimes committed at home by some unabashed Igbo criminals. The truth is, the “home” Igbo criminals are a hopeless and shameless horde whose self esteem and sense of shame are terribly at their nadir, and as a result purvey crimes at home. Inter alia, for any stigmatised crime committed at home (Igbo land) there is a stern reprimand implicit in the cleansing of the crime. The sacerdotal process of cleansing the land of a crime or an abomination is called “Ikpu Alu”. However, “Ikpu Alu” (cleansing of abominations) does not extend to crimes committed by Igbo sons and daughters in places outside the native dome. It is therefore not surprising if some Igbo persons commit heinous crimes in obverse places, and come back home to take chieftaincy titles. As a matter of fact, in some morally weak Igbo communities it is a brave thing to traffic in drugs abroad. Drug barons are gleefully celebrated as Ndi kara Obi (lion-hearted people). Such is the pantomime of the Igbo and crimes. It is therefore indubitable to posit that an unenviable number of Igbo persons with innate criminal manuals travel outside the Igbo enclave to pursue crimes. This confutes the general idea that the sojourning of the Igbo is driven solely by entrepreneurial inclinations and motives. To a large extent, the sojourning of some Igbo is driven by a morbid aim of shielding their evil trades from the peering eyes of their kinsmen. Their names are protected as long as they do not traffic in crimes at home. The important thing is to be successful in crimes abroad; successful enough to build vulgar mansions at home and throw lazy cash about. To animate my argument further, what is the entrepreneurial inclination or motive of the Igbo in India, Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, South Africa, and other countries peddling drugs? Is the entrepreneurial spirit of the Igbo only awakened abroad? Why should the Igbo entrepreneurial spirit find its host cozily and lopsidedly outside Igbo land? Is there a marriage between Igbo criminality across the world and Igbo entrepreneurial genome? These are questions that defeat the long, tired argument of Igbo entrepreneurial “peripatetism.” The fact is the “entrepreneurial” beat-up logic and reason for Igbo sojourning is a bored excuse. Analogously, Igbo sojourning atavism is also effectuated by pride, ego and vanity. A typical Igbo person will want to prove he is successful in anyway. It is wickedly mortifying to be seen as struggling in Igbo land. This underscores the reason many Igbo persons smuggle themselves out of Nigeria, and because it is thought that any person in Obodo Oyibo (white man’s country) or even anywhere outside Igbo land is “doing well”. Those Igbo persons who are “cursed” to be in Igbo land are seen as struggling and as such do not deserve the courtesy of admiration and respect. It is a proud thing for an Igbo father to say, “All my children are in the abroad”; even though “the abroad” is Gabon. Such a father courts the respect, envy and admiration of other fathers in Igbo land. This is the awful linkage between Igbo sojourning and base vanity. In all, there are Igbo persons in the scrawny good number whose sojourn in foreign countries is not tainted by any evil intent or base vanity, but it is a bleeding fact that the singular Igbo entrepreneurial logic for sojourning is one big smorgasbord of fallacy |
