Ganuwa is the hausa term for a city wall. Just like you have the walls of Jericho and the walls of Jerusalem and other notable historical ancient cities. Most of the ancient northern cities had city walls that surrounded them providing a form of security from external aggression. A few examples are Kano, Zaria, Bauchi just to name a few. There were normally a number of entrances to the city which are referred to as city gates ("Kofa" in hausa), today when you go to some of these cities you will hear Kofar this, Kofar that...mean so so gate, so so gate.....

For example Bauchi city had and still has 9 gates. The nine gates are Kofar lnkil, Kofar Dumi, Kofar Wase, Kofar Jahun, Kofar Nassarawo, Kofar Wunti, Kofar Ran, Kofar Tirwun and Kofar Wambai.

Zaria city or Birnin Zazzau also has its history with walls and gates.The walls are said to have been built between 13th and 14th century and circumnavigate Zaria city roughly 16kilomteres with eight ( magnificent gates leading into the city. Currently only seven (7) gates are still in use.

As beautiful as these histories are, they are not without some dark aspects of religious prejudice, bigotry and fanaticism that have always be clouded them such that I am yet to see or hear about one single ancient city in the north that has one single Church building within its ancient walls. Most of the Churches you see today that seem to be in the city centre are actually not within its walls but were initially casted out of the cities in the outskirts of town but had over the years due to rapid development and expansion come to be in the heart of such cities. A clear example is the St. John's Catholic Church just outside the Wunti Gate of Bauchi, today that place is the Epicenter of the city, so many of such abound whether in Sabon Gari areas of Zaria or Kano or others.

I am so surprised that Ganduje of all people would be the one crying foul about the fake news in Port Harcourt when I know and have seen Mosques located in the very centre of Southern Cities and towns and have never heard of any of these been molested, threatened, sacked, chased or demolished.

Our people up North need to learn to be religiously tolerant, that is the only negative that I see and know about them otherwise they are the sweetest people you love to cohabit with.
