I still doubt the authenticity of that doctor's medical license. A quack maybe? or maybe they went to a private lab and it was the attending that saw them.
Standard protocol dictates that the doctor reveals the woman's HIV status to her alone in confidence. It doesn't matter if the man is her soul-mate or husband or whatever. The statement of "two becoming one" is very naive. OK, now the man reacted badly to the news and stormed out of the office and the doctor didn't have any measures in place in case such a thing happens? it all sounds strange to me.

It is interesting to note in my experience that most females who are sero-discordant with their males tend to remain with the man regardless of his status. Most men run, but some men actually opt to stay as well.

Sh should simply go back to the hospital and demand the man's result as well in the same vein of 'since her husband and her are one'. But I doubt the man is positive. Men take the news very very badly. If he were positive he would be devastated or pretend to be understanding to the lady and not treat her like a leper. He could also be angry because he feels she may been unfaithful, not necessarily because of the HIV thing.

I'm surprised at some of the responses here, even those that seem learned.

Obviously this story is fake, there is no way a doctor will bring a HIV result and still insist on telling the couple after the owner of the result has insisted that it should be confidential. Even here in Nigeria we still have our ethics, thank you very much.

Now, even if the doctor/pastor was foolish enough to disclose another person's HIV status to a third party, why will the same doctor now withhold the information from the other result? how would that conversation had gone? "sorry , you are HIV positive, em, there is no need to disclose your husband's own again since you are already positive..."? or would he read the woman's own out loud to the hearing of the man and then hand the man's own result to him confidentially in the presence of the woman? Ridiculous.

This is obviously a fabricated story concocted to whip up sentiment.

i would advice you avoid epidural unless absolutely necessary.

Maybe, you are confused about location, because you lye on an examination couch for examination. Beds are for hospital wards, bedroom s, motels and hotels. .

This probably means he wanted to perform a vag1nal examination on you. This involves him telling you to lie on your back while he wears gloves and examines your vagina. And yes it can involve insertion of the fingers or other instruments and there is no way the fingers won't at least brush the clit as it enters.

It is best practice to lubricate the fingers before examining so as not to cause discomfort to the patient. The 'cream' used is called K-Y jelly. Some use xylocaine gel and in crude environments olive oil is used.


But I'm sure the doctor didn't explain all this to you. Probably said 'miss, lie down!" and that is where the problem arose.

A lot of issues with doctors have to do with poor communication skills between doctor and patient.

I remember a case of a guy who came with HIV. The young doc had been seeing patients all day and was tired and irritable. He just opened the man's result and went: "oga you have HIV, move to ward B for counselling and treatment. Oya next patient!"

The man sat there, blank. Then he stood up and walked out the office and suddenly collapsed on the floor. He died before anything could be done.

Most docs actually don't know there is a protocol for breaking bad news. But all that is changing sha. The doc in question was so remorseful he went to study how to break bad news. He teaches younger docs now on the same technique.

It is wrong. Patients are not stuppid and have a right to know whats wrong with them so they can get ready and tidy up affairs if need be

Doctors do not necessarily prevent patients from knowing, but it has been a common experience that when they are told their condition they tend to stop medication and go to prayer houses or herbal treatment only to return much worse. In many cases the patient is even told the problem but refuses to inform his relatives for fear of abandonment.

That's how one useless one wanted to touch me inappropriately, he even wanted to use something, I later found out to be cream for love making on me, I just jumped up from the bed I was lying on and took to my heels.

CCTV and a female assistant all the time in cases of female patients.

I was at the doctor's last month and the guy was taking his precious time going over every minute detail of what he ever he wanted to do.

Doctor: I'm going to place my right hand on your right breasstt now to feel for any physical abnormality.
Assistant: is that ok? Do you consent?(while taking notes)
Me: yes

Doctor:I'm going to place my right hand on your left breassst now to feel.....
Assistant: do you consent?
Me:yes

Doctor: I'm going to insert.....bla bla

And so on and so forth for every single procedure.
It was repetitive mehn but I understood he was only protecting himself jare

Such things aren't possible in the Nigerian setting. The doctor:patient ratio is crazy high and most of our govt hospitals are filled with overworked doctors trying to tend to marketloads of patients. Nobody has time to be asking "pls I want to examine your right breaaasst, do I have permission, pls i want to examine your left toe, do i have permission?" Its time wasting and clumsy and the doc won't be able to see the hundreds of patients waiting outside the hospital doors. And even if he tries to do it that way it is the same patients that will beat down the door and scream that he is going too slow.

Most doctors even start dodging to do physical examinations unless it is absolutely necessary in a bid to attend to as many patients as possible. We practice jungle medicine here. And with the epileptic underpayment, most docs cant wait to check out of the country. Unfortunately some folk carry over the Nigerian habit to the U.S and U.K, not knowing it is an entirely different culture. White folk are always asking why. Why are you giving me this drug, why did you smile like that, why is there a needle in your table. A naija doc has to be careful and undergo reorientation.

Then there is the issue of racism. Some white folk just cant stomach a black doctor's hands on them. You see them visibly cringe when you want to examine them. You explain the procedure and even call a chaperon but they are still uncomfortable. If you mistakenly think of something funny and smile while examining a 50yrs old white woman's breast, even if there are 100 chaperons in that room, you could get into a whole lot of trouble.

Its crazy.

It is common practice among nigerian doctors to delay telling the patient or their relatives about a life threathening diagnosis until the very last moment. Most doctors can usually see the end of an illness very early on but would rather tarry and 'manage' the patient until he/she gives up the ghost. The reason being that:
1. Most patients, when told the truth of thier condition either
(a) lose hope completely and simply go home to die, or
(b) lose hope in the medical system entirely and run to churches or herbal homes, where they eventually also die.

2. There have been cases where relatives are given a diagnosis and they abandon the patient in the care of the hospital only to return after the patient has passed on. then they wail and cry and carry the body away without paying the bills(and nobody will stop them so as not to be termed 'insensitive'.)

There is a relatively new teaching where it is being advocated that patients shold be told bad news from the onset. This is how it is done in western societies with the prognosis and chances for survival clearly outlined for the patient. This allows the patient to 'tidy up' his life's affairs, write a will if necessary, say goodbye to loved ones etc etc. This system has aready been put into use in some hospitals and although success stories have been recorded, the vast majority of the nigerian populace stil has a tendency to scream "IT is NOT my portion!!!" and run away from medication that would have prolonged their lives significantly or even provide a cure, only to return months later in very bad shape and usually when the doctor can no longer do anything to help.

What is you opinion? Would you like your doctor to tell you the whole truth? Or simply treat you as best as he can for as long as he can without disclosing the severity of the illness to you?

You then start seeing all sorts, from those who want to defend their friends to those who never liked the doctor in the first place suddenly remembering an 'inappropriate' thing he must have done while examining them. Some startimagining how he winked at them once or touched them somewhere once, and it quickly becomes a circus. Even when the doctor proves beyond reasonable doubt that he is innocent, his reputation is destroyed permanently.
