Africa united behind Caster - Continent’s athletic bigwigs demand apology for 800m champ’s ill-treatment

AFRICA is closing ranks in support of golden girl Caster Semenya.
Sowetan can exclusively disclose that the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) meeting yesterday decided to confront the International Athletics Federation (IAAF) about their treatment of Semenya.
The CAA is demanding an unequivocal apology for Semenya and Athletics South Africa (ASA) before any further discussion on her.
The row over the gender of the 18-year-old 800m gold medalist is still raging after her victory at the 12th IAAF championships in Berlin last Wednesday.
IAAF general secretary Pierre Weiss added fuel to the fire when he said they were to investigate whether Caster was male or female after questions were posed by some runners.

“ They must apologise to Caster and SA before … any further discussion on the matter” said an African official who declined to be named yesterday.

Rapport newspaper yesterday reported that the IAAF was conducting tests on Semenya although she had not been informed of this.
So enraged is the ASA president Leonard Chuene that he has recused himself from the IA AF council as he “wants to fight the case with his gloves off”.
Efforts to contact Chuene in Germany yesterday were unsuccessful.

Semenya's time is not even in the Top 10 All-Time and would not be good enough to win @ Beijing Olympics (won by Pamela Jelimo).

Jarmila Kratochvilova looks even more masculine.
My point exactly,I guess Jelimo has breast, and she's also pretty huh.
Everyone talk about her masculine body, but I don't see anything different with it compared to other athletes. The only difference is she have a very deep voice, and that's what people are using against her.
Foreign AffairsZuma State Visit To Angola by RSA(op): 11:19am On Aug 21, 2009
President Jacob Zuma was feted in Angola on Thursday as he made his "homecoming" to the country he had served in as military commander of the ANC's military wing.

The Angolan parliament gave him a standing ovation and chanted "Zuma, Zuma, Zuma" after he finished his address to them by saying in Portuguese: "My country is your country, your country is my country. We are one people, one family, I feel at home here."

Not only Angolan parliamentarians and officials were in attendance, but also 11 South African cabinet ministers, who accompanied him on his first state visit as president and the first state visit between the two countries since 1994
"Angola was our home away from home" during the liberation struggle, when the country had given the ANC military bases at great peril to itself from apartheid SA's military, Zuma said.

"We remember that Umkhonto weSizwe cadres were free to walk around the streets of Luanda armed, manning roadblocks as if they were Angolans."

Zuma had successfully re-kindled the ties that were so strong during the liberation struggle, but which had frayed, for various reasons, since SA won its freedom in 1994.

At a joint press conference after meeting Angolan President Jose Eduardo dos Santos, Zuma strongly denied that their was anything untoward about the long delay in having a state visit.

He attributed it entirely to historical circumstances, mainly the Angolan civil war.

Dos Santos noted that after the civil war ended in 2002, Angola had been preoccupied with demobilising soldiers, resettling 4 million internal refugees, rebuilding the war-ravaged country and re-establishing the political system.

Dos Santos announced that South African petroleum parastatal PetroSA and its Angolan counterpart, Sonangol, had signed an agreement for PetroSA to refine Angolan oil.

Although it is sub-Saharan Africa's largest oil producer, Angola has to import petroleum because its single refinery cannot produce for domestic consumption.

Zuma noted that Angola was one of the biggest oil producers on the continent and SA had one of the largest economies, so there was a natural synergy between them.

Dos Santos said the two countries had also discussed the supply and distribution of electricity from the Democratic Republic of Congo's Inga hydroelectric plant, and other regional infrastructure projects, to facilitate business.

And they also signed air services and diplomatic consultation agreements, as well as other memorandums on trade, industry, commerce, housing, and sport and recreation.

They agreed in principle to establish a bi-national commission to upgrade and co-ordinate all relations between the two countries - political, economic and social.

But officials said this agreement had not been signed because of legal technicalities.

They said these would be worked out soon and the foreign ministers of both countries would meet to sign the necessary agreement.

The two sides also failed to conclude an agreement to scrap visa requirements for travellers between the two countries, but officials said they believed this would also be finalised soon.

The often laborious process of obtaining visas is considered an significant impediment to travel between the two countries, and therefore also commerce and tourism.

Zuma also brought the largest delegation of South African business leaders ever to have accompanied a state visit - about 150 of them, he said.

On Thursday, they concluded a two-day forum with Angolan business leaders to seek business opportunities and identify impediments.

Trade and Industry Minister Rob Davies had earlier said total trade between the two countries had increased 17-fold between 1997 and 2007 to R17 billion, and nearly doubled again last year to R30bn.

But Zuma said the political channel now expanding would open the way for "many more billions" in trade.

Today Zuma was due to travel north of Luanda to visit former ANC military bases and to honour the MK cadres who died there

On the bottom pic she is a second from left, yes she might have some male  genes orchromosone but she has a woman body with a vigina,I thought that what makes one a  woman. It's not her fault that she is created in that way.She did not take any drug to look and sound like she does.I think here people are questioning God,and if found to have male chromosone then what?,she is not a woman anymore?,and definelty she wont be a man.Now what is it that she'll be now?.

I really don't understand why some people get joy out of this, cause it could also happen to your child, will you be happpy with this treatment from racist IAAF if she was your child?Do you think if she was a Brits or Yank she would have recieved the same treatment?.The reason we as Africans don't develop as people or nations is because we don't care about each other,we dont Sympathize with each other, when one of us fails we rejoice.Europeans stand together nomatter what.Any way she is got the support of her people and we will continue supporting her.Our golden girl.

Gender doubts quashedMokgadi Caster Semenya is a girl, and her birth certificate corroborates what her family, friends, neighbours, teachers and fellow pupils have always known.

Semenya, who is now the centre of attention after winning gold in 800m at the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) in Berlin on Wednesday night, was certified a girl at her birth on January 7, 1991.
The fracas about her gender has now angered Masetlhong villagers in Moletji outside Polokwane, where Semenya was born and bred.
Eric Modiba, Semenya’s mentor and principal of Nthema Secondary School where she matriculated last year, said it was a matter of “sheer jealousy” that people were raising doubts about her sex now that she has conquered the world.
“Caster is a girl and the school has never had doubts about her gender.
“To top it all, she is straight and has never entertained issues of lesbianism,” he said.
Modiba said Semenya, like any girl, used to associate with both males and females in and outside school.
“She used to be a good soccer player, though she was an average pupil in class,” he said, adding that Semenya was a “very talkative” person who is fond of tsotsitaal.
“That she is a tomboy does not mean that she is a man,” Modiba said.
Her long-time friend Debra Morolong also quashed doubts that Semenya was a man.
“People should not mistake her strong voice and her physique for that of a man. She has always been a girl and did everything that girls did,” said Morolong.

Semenya has been at the centre of gender doubts after Australian athletes challenged her gender following her 800m exploits in which she won both the semi-final and final in Germany.
The IAAF was also forced to conduct physical tests and genital screening to ascertain if indeed Semenya was a girl.

Who are you to tell me if I know what a movie ishuh Oh yes, I knew you'd reply sooner or later, I saw the thread you formed about how much the movie has achieved. How come it is the first, despite your claim that SA has a film industry, that is getting any accolades. If you can't see how crappy the movie is, then you're really full of crap yourself. Even huge blockbusters from Hollywood, like GI Joe and Transformers 3 got poor/critical reviews. Some people have taste and look beyond the big noise and see a movie for what it really is. And by the way, Nollywood to me has more to offer than the so-called SA movie industry. Who has ever heard of them anyway, before District 9? Keep deluding yourself.
This movie is on the world stage, where big players are at,crap or no crap it got a recognition from the best critics in the world.
So you don't know anything about SA movie before District 9? thats normal,I dont blame you.Personally I don't know anything about Nigerian movies, never seen one, except those bad shot homevideo on 114 dstv my mother in law love so much, cause its about witches grin I don't consider them movies,Imean anyone with a little camera could do those,I am talking about movies that are world standards, professional actors, directors, sound, lightings and all that it take to make a movie.

So please keep watching your own home video and leave movies to people who knows thier stories.Ciao princess.

Mr Mo,SA have a unique situation which calls for a special intervention, you know the history of the country.South Africans, poor people who everybody is quick to point out that they are lazy builded this country with their bare hands without being paid nor acknowledged.Whites put them in places where they have to spend fortune to get to work, yet they earned less.

The black goverment had to give or try to give them their dignity back, but as you know that you cannot undo 200 years in 15 years, the goverment is using housing, social grants and other ways to uplift poor people spirits. All this are just short term solution for a special situation. The most important thing is the next generation, the goverment is investing heavely on education,it's not a quick solution but a long term thing.Honestly I am happy with what the ANC is doing, they've done what lot of thought was impossible.Yes we have problems, crisis but the future looks bright.I have lived in SA during the aapartheid years and now and I know what Iam saying when I say SA is doing well and can only get better.

Mr Mo unfortunetly there is no country in Africa that we can all look up to,and SA has to find his way on his own.

I don't need to do any research; there's a difference between shooting a movie in South Africa(as a location) and a movie from South Africa. Why don't you try to understand a post before you replyhuh So essentially, what I meant to say was, who makes good movies in RSA anyway? Luckily for them they had an American producer but the screenwriting I'm sure was South African so that's why to me it looked like a crap movie - big sales or not.
As if you know what a movie is grin,SA make Oscar winning movies. We have South African Film Industry not a Sollyhood/Jozihood/Nollyhood/Ghannyhood grin

It is said that the love for your country is blinding you.Omo shine your eyes,I don't think the people who wrote the script give a damn or even knows anything about Nigeria, they just used the name.Just like Borat using Kazastan in his movie. So please have chill pill, nobody really cares about you or your country.

TV/MoviesSA film hits top US spot by RSA(op): 9:13am On Aug 19, 2009
The film currently occupies the top box office spot in the US and is enjoying rave reviews from some of the toughest movie critics worldwide.
District 9, starring the fairly unknown Sharlto Copley and directed by Neill Blomkamp – both South Africans – raked in 37million (about R296 million) when it opened in the US last week, outdoing the likes of GI Joe: The rise of Cobra, The Time Traveller’s Wife and Julie & Julia.
“The results, which far exceeded the industry expectations, instantly turns Blomkamp, the 29-year-old from Johannesburg, into the new prince of a town 10 000 kms away,” wrote The Times magazine on Sunday.
“Hollywood loves a guy who makes a smart, popular movie that in three days earns considerably more than its skimpy 30 million (R240 million) budget.”
Copley made the cover of last week’s Entertainment Weekly, an honour usually reserved for Hollywood’s A-list actors and actresses, the New York Times said this week.
The movie’s trailer, which was posted on YouTube a few days ago, already had 586 308 views by yesterday.
Its fan group page on Facebook has 103 379 members.
District 9 is a sci-fi movie produced by Peter Jackson, the Oscar-winning filmmaker behind The Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Various websites describe the movie as a story about aliens making their first contact with humans when they land in Johannesburg.
The looming tension between humans and aliens leads to a private company stepping in and putting the creatures in makeshift settlements.
It is also believed that the movie is an allegory about apartheid.
Locally, the Eyewitness News reported this week that the movie could be the biggest South African export ever.
“Industry insiders are predicting it will be bigger than Oscar- winning Tsotsi. There is talk that it will rake more than the R7million that that film took (in South Africa) when it opened in 2006.”
South African audiences will see District 9 for the first time next week when it opens at local cinemas on August 28.

SportsSouth African Woman Athlete Caster Semenya Faces Gender Probe by RSA(op): 8:54am On Aug 19, 2009
Athletics writers Scott Gullan and Glen Foreman

August 19, 2009 10:00am
IS SHE a he? That is the question being asked at the world championships about South Africa's Caster Semenya.

The 18-year-old 800m gold medal favourite has burst on to the world scene in recent months, with her appearance, including obvious facial hair, and muscular build igniting speculation about her gender.

The IAAF is aware of the issue and has conducted physical tests and genetic screening to try to determine the legitimacy of Semenya's sex.

An overnight meeting of officials in Berlin was expected to determine whether she takes her place in tomorrow morning's 800m final.

Gender verification is not new to sport - particularly track and field.

The issue first arose at the 1932 Olympic Games in Los Angeles when Stella Walsh (born Stanislawa Walasiewicz) won gold in the women's 100m sprint.

The Polish-born, US-raised Walsh equaled the world record at the time in all three of her races, including the final.

A Canadian report described Walsh as having "long man-like strides".

But after the runner was killed by a stray bullet at a shopping centre in Cleveland, the resulting autopsy revealed Walsh had male genitals and both male and female chromosomes - a condition known as mosaicism.

Gender testing was introduced at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics and has since resulted in uncovering several cases of gender fraud.

The tests were later limited to 'on request' if an athlete filed a complaint about a competitor and, in the case of the Olympics, would be followed up by the International Olympic Committee.

IOC rules generally state athletes must compete under their gender-at-birth.

But in 2003, the IOC Medical Commission compiled the Stockholm Consensus - a document outlining the regulations for athletes who have undergone gender reassignment.

The commission found: "Any individuals undergoing sex reassignment of male to female before puberty should be regarded as girls and women (female).

"This applies as well for female to male reassignment, who should be regarded as boys and men (male).

"The group recommends that individuals undergoing sex reassignment from male to female after puberty (and the converse) be eligible for participation in female or male competitions, respectively, under the following conditions:

- Surgical anatomical changes have been completed, including external Instruments changes and gonadectomy.

- Legal recognition of their assigned sex has been conferred by the appropriate official authorities.

- Hormonal therapy appropriate for the assigned sex has been administered in a verifiable manner and for a sufficient length of time to minimise gender-related advantages in sport competitions."

Semenya announced her arrival at last month's African junior titles, running 1min 56.72sec, which was more than seven seconds faster than her best the previous year.

Semenya, who hails from a remote part of the Limpopo province, clocked 1:58.66 to win her semi-finals yesterday, relegating Kenyan world champion Janeth Jepkosgei to third.

Women fight for final spots
Jelimo's hopes of adding world gold ended here on Monday as she pulled up in her semi-final at the world championships.

The 19-year-old - who carried all before her last year including a stunning victory in the Olympic final in Beijing - had complained after Sunday's first round heat of having a problem with her ankle as a cause of being spiked.

She was never going well on Monday and finally gave up the ghost down the back stretch of the second and final lap.

Her compatriot and Olympic silver medalist Janeth Jepkosgei failed to win her semi-final, and was fortunate to progress as one of the two fastest losers after easing up far too soon before the line and being edged out of second by Great Britain's Jennifer Meadows.

Jepkosgei, the defending world champion and who ended up regretting her advice to Jelimo of moving up to her distance last year, was fortunate to still be in the competition after being brought down in her first round heat.

However, the Kenyan team made a successful appeal for her to be reinstated and she ended up in the same semi-final as the South African teenager at the centre of the incident - Caster Semenya.

The 18-year-old South African starlet made no mistake this time and led from the front to become the fastest qualifier for the final with a time of 1minute 58.66 seconds.

Semenya, who has burst onto the South African scene this year taking both the junior 800m and 1500m titles with vastly improved times, said that athletics was not the be all and end all of her life.
``Running is just a game for me,'' said Semenya, who used to play football as a left back.

``Even next year, I can stop running if I want.''

Extremely good insight into the situation. It is very obvious you have spent some time in the country and have analysied it to the best of your ability.

I spent some time there too and agree with your analysis 100%,now only if the SA's can borrow some of this insights and better themselves. We wil lal lbe good for it.
If that makes everybody feel good about themself?then good.
All I know is because of our economic strength,we have one of the most growing black middleclass in Africa, more of our people are obtaining top class univesity degree at a fast pace.Yes I do agree that we still have lot of poor people, but I can assure you that none of them go to bed without food, their children goes to school for free, their health is looked after for free, the goverment is even building them houses for free.I know for a fact that this families won't remain poor for ever.Thier children with the help of the goverment will be educated and find good jobs in SA and will take their family out of povertty.

Now the question is 'is there hope in SA?'

If the answer is Yes then SA is moving forward. Then ask yourself the same question about your country.

SA is undisputed King and Giant of Africa. The only country that has heavely invested in every country in Africa.Fact.
SportsFifa Announces Venues For U17 Wc by RSA(op): 8:11am On Aug 07, 2009
Following a final venue inspection tour, Fifa has today confirmed the cities which will host the Fifa Under-17 World Cup Nigeria 2009.
The cities are as follows: Abuja, Bauchi, Calabar, Enugu, Ijebu-Ode, Kaduna, Kano and Lagos. Warri has been excluded from use during the competition.

“I was pleased to see that the venues have made significant progress since my last visit in May. They now meet the basic stadium infrastructure requirements of Fifa and thus can be confirmed for the competition,” said Jack Warner, Fifa vice-president and chairman of the Fifa organising committee for the U17 World Cup.

“What impressed me even more than the infrastructural improvements was the passion and the commitment the people of Nigeria have shown. I congratulate the federal government and the state authorities, the local organising committee as well as the communities in the cities for what they have achieved.

The legacy which was created will last far beyond the upcoming tournament. I am therefore proud to say that Nigeria is ready to host the Fifa U17 World Cup.”

A few of the venues need some additional work which Fifa has approved and has agreed to monitor over the next few days.

With regards to Warri, Warner added: “Despite special efforts by Fifa to provide additional time, advice and opportunities to raise the quality of the facilities to a level that would meet the requirements of hosting matches of the Fifa U17 World Cup, the delivery had fallen far below the necessary level.

PSL vows to set high standards
MNINAWA NTLOKO  Published: 2009/08/06 07:18:01 AM
THE world is expected to cast an unprecedented spotlight on the domestic premiership in the coming season and Premier Soccer League (PSL) CEO Kjetil Siem warned yesterday that the heightened interest would require the top-flight campaign to be run at a consummate level of professionalism.
The PSL season gets under way tomorrow night.
With the 2010 Soccer World Cup just 10 months away, Siem said the administrators, players, match officials and the nation at large could not afford to drop the ball “at such a crucial chapter of our soccer. We have to deliver the most professional product ever because the world will be watching,” the Norwegian said.
“We want to sell South African football to the world and we have to take advantage of the opportunities that will be availed by that kind of exposure. That means it is absolutely crucial that there should be very little margin for error. “We are aware that it is impossible for a soccer season to be run from start to finish without any challenges or mistakes. But we still have to endeavour to run a perfect season that has as little errors as possible.”SA came under the spotlight during the Confederations Cup in June, giving the world a glimpse of what to expect next year.

With the curiosity expected to switch to domestic games in the remaining months before the World Cup, the PSL is planning to reap the benefits of the exposure. After SA won the rights to host the World Cup in May 2004, the value of South African football skyrocketed.
World football governing body Fifa’s historic decision to award the World Cup finals to SA finally changed the fortunes of a sport that was grossly undervalued by some businesses for decades.
Asia’s ESPN Star Sports and sports satellite and cable network Eurosport are believed to be among the parties that are interested in buying live top-flight matches in the coming season.
Most of Europe came to know about South African football when Eurosport secured the rights to televise a Soweto derby (Kaizer Chiefs vs Orlando Pirates) live to more than 43 European countries in November 2007. Live images from Durban’s Kings Park stadium were televised to more than 22,3-million households in nine languages.
Siem — who officially assumed the reins in August 2007 from Englishman Trevor Phillips — said his contract would come to an end next year. “I would really like to stay on because I love this country. But I have to respect my contract.”
He said European perceptions about SA had changed and many of the sceptics had come to respect the PSL. “I know that there were some people who laughed at our goals in the beginning. Look at us now.
“We have managed to greatly professionalise this sport and in some cases it is of a higher standard than some countries in Europe. But by the same token, we do acknowledge that there is still room for improvement and we continue to work on that. The perception has certainly changed in Europe and there is genuine interest.”
Siem said the shortage of venues would be the biggest challenge in the coming season as construction is continuing at many of the stadiums that the PSL would be using under normal circumstances.
The 2009/10 domestic premiership season will get under way tomorrow when holders SuperSport United face Maritzburg United at Woodburn Stadium in the first match of the anticipated campaign.

And also most of this attacks happened in the most poorest areared. And beside I dont think there was one Nigerian attacked during those clashes. You people just like attentions.

But of of course again the Nigerians/Africans will bear the full brunt of xenophobia.

EAZY TARGETS!! don't you think.

I think you don't know what you're talking about,Nigerians where never affected and if people hate Nigerians its because of their criminal activities, nothing more nothing less.Majority of poor people knows nothing about Nigeria. But what they know is Nigerians in SA are criminals and fraudsters,I guess you people send all your bad people to us,cause I know that most Nigerians in Nigeria and across the world are honest and hard working

this from a citizen of a nation of superstitious kaffirs with a rapist president who showers to ward off hiv cheesy cheesy
Better to be a Kafir in your own country, than being a African gypsies who hop from country to country looking for a better life, even dying in small fishing boats trying to flee that corrupt infected country.
And I would rather have Zuma with HIV than that dead walking man you call a president, atleast Zuma will last his term. That thing of yours will propably die anytime soon.

You better go and clean your streets that is full dead people angry.

Tudór:
1 in 4 south african men is a rapist. . .how bout that?
And we will never know the correct stats in your country, maybe is 1 in 1 grin

Yeah most of those 800 people killed like ants, would have been alive if they where in SA.South Africa is lot more safe than Nigeria at any given time.

1,2:
Dont wanna givr the wrong ideas now. Not any more would you travel to UK with SA passports only. you have to hastle for VISA my man. Thanks to you guys, you really messed it up. UK realizes that there were too many SA ID holder who were not originally from SA. They realise that there is a corrupt activitivies going on. then they introduces a lwa that would require an SA citizen to apply for VISA. Many Europian countries will follow suit, watch the space.
I think 1,2 the problem is our home affaires officials who are corrupt,I think we should also scrap this law that allows everyone who marries a South African to automatically qualify for citizenship, because peoples Identity documents are stolen and are married without their consent. And most of the people who do this and travel to UK with SA passports are Pakistanis and Nigerians.Hope the goverment is doing something about this.
I know Zuma will do something, unlike Mbeki who was raised in exile,he felt he owed everybody something,Zuma owes nobody a dime, and will chase all this illigal people who are tarnishing our country's image.
