The fastest way to get a salary increase and faster career growth in Nigeria is by job hopping. Loyalty doesn't pay
CareerHow The Nigerian Banking System Is Killing Employee Loyalty. by Rubyjade(op): 8:02pm On Jun 19, 2023
HOW THE NIGERIAN BANKING SYSTEM IS KILLING EMPLOYEE LOYALTY.

I was at the bank last week to complete a pending transaction that has lingered for two weeks because my account officer has been changed Three times in just one year. NO, they didn't "Japa" they have simply moved to another bank in search of promotion. With the hike in commodity price, removal of subsidy and now increase in Electricity tariff I do not blame the staffs for moving to get the next grade.

The Nigerian banking industry—a system that unfortunately rewards employees who jump from bank to bank in search of faster promotions, rather than recognizing the value of loyalty and commitment.

The average duration for an employee to progress to the next grade within a single bank is around four years. However, the situation drastically changes when individuals decide to move between banks. Shockingly, they can achieve promotions every six months by hopping from one institution to another.
When I was in the banking industry, I personally spent 3 years on a grade before getting promoted and I was considered to be a superstar as this was slightly faster than the industry average. Meanwhile, my friends at the Big4 got promoted three times during the same period.

We must consider the adverse consequences of this practice.
Why is Employee loyalty important?
- Employees no longer invest enough time or effort in acquiring in-depth knowledge of the products and services offered by the bank. As a result, customers are left with unanswered questions, inefficient service, and a diminished level of trust.
- Lack of loyalty can hinder the development of long-term relationships between employees and customers. Job hopping disrupts this bond, making it harder to establish strong connections and understand customer needs.
- It is cheaper to retain an employee than employ a new one.
-The culture of rewarding job hopping creates an environment where employees are constantly focused on their next career move. This mentality can undermine teamwork, collaboration, and the sharing of knowledge and experiences among colleagues.

To address this issue, it is crucial for Nigerian banks to reevaluate their reward systems and place a stronger emphasis on rewarding loyalty, commitment, and skill development.

In a nutshell, Dear banks please promote your performing staffs and review salary constantly as it makes no sense to be paying staff the same salary range for 10 years when the economy has experienced a cumulative 85% inflation over the years.

Let us come together as professionals and bring back corporate loyalty, this issue cut across other industries as well. By addressing this flaw in the system and promoting a more balanced and sustainable approach to career advancement, we can ensure better service delivery, enhanced customer satisfaction, and ultimately, the growth and prosperity of the industry as a whole.

Business10 Major Implications Of Naira Exchange Rates Unification - Taiwo Oyedele by Rubyjade(op): 8:11am On Jun 19, 2023
10 major implications of Naira exchange rates unification

With the Nigerian Naira now exchanging in the official forex market at market determined rates, a significant market distortion has been removed. Expectedly this will come with both positive and negative implications.

The major impacts will include:

1. Significant rise in government debt in naira terms by about N12 trillion to N90 trillion i.e. external debt of $42bn will increase by the difference between the old and new rates.

2. As a result of the above, debt to GDP ratio will increase by about 5%

3. There will be a corresponding increase in debt service cost with respect to foreign debt service

4. Government’s revenue will increase in naira terms resulting in a higher tax/revenue to GDP ratio. Corporate tax collection may however decline as many businesses crystallize forex losses due to the higher exchange rate.

5. Possible reduction in budget deficit if government’s forex revenue exceeds foreign currency obligations, an increase in budget deficit will arise if otherwise

6. Possible impact on the pump price of petrol which could inch closer to the current pump price of diesel

7. There should be some cost savings as government discontinues with the various fx interventions e.g. Naira4Dollar, RT200 etc which cost tens of billions of naira

8. The country will attract fx inflows especially from portfolio investors, FDI and exporters proceeds. Impact on diaspora remittances would be marginal.

9. The capital market will benefit as it is likely to appreciate further as foreign investors take position

10. There should be negligible impact on the general prices of goods and services as products already factored in parallel market rates to a large extent.

Overall, this is a positive move. However, the government needs to manage the dynamics to restore confidence. The backlog of forex demands need to be addressed and government should be ready to supply forex to stabilise the exchange rate in the short term.

Stop the demand for certain taxes and levies in foreign currency, it creates unnecessary fx demand without adding to supply.

Also relax capital control and administrative bottlenecks including unbanning the list of items prohibited for fx (and complement with higher import duties), remove the need for certificate of capital importation etc to prevent the parallel market rate from simply moving further away from the official market rate.

The aggregate demand for fx across markets should reduce as round-tripping incentive is removed, for instance people who fake foreign travels just to get fx at discounted rates. Also, Nigeria's sovereign credit rating should improve if this is complemented with the right fiscal and monetary policies thereby attracting more fx inflows and lowering the cost of borrowing.

CareerRe: Work-life Balance In A Remote Workplace: 7 Strategies For Success by Rubyjade: 2:47pm On Jun 15, 2023
How do you manage work-life balance in a remote job?

What are some tips for creating a good work-life balance while working remotely?
1) Scheduling time off is so important. Make sure to schedule breaks throughout the day to keep your mind fresh and creative for work-related tasks.

2) Organization can be challenging when remote working - but just try your best! Set up a system that works well with you - whether that's separate folders for different types of files or installing a productivity app on your phone. Also, don't forget to back up all of the files related to work! In case anything goes wrong, you should always have a backup of work files and notes. Losing data will cost you extra hours and disappointment

3) Sometimes remote work can take over your life - make sure you schedule in some me-time! Whether that means going for a walk, working out at the gym, cooking dinner, or just taking an hour out of work every now and then.

4) Make friends outside of work when possible - especially if they're in the same industry as you. It's always nice to have people who'll understand what you're going through and will help motivate you.

5) Don't be afraid to say 'no.' Sometimes remote work is so overwhelming and feels like it's consuming your life - don't worry about hurting anyone's feelings and prioritize yourself. Learn to say "No" when tasks start piling up, and you feel like drowning

6) Do sports. Find an hour to get moving every day. It gets really comfortable to live between the laptop and the fridge. Push yourself and exercise daily. This has numerous benefits, like improving focus, overall health, better sleep, relieves stress and anxiety, etc.

7) Get creative, take pictures of all of those fabulous work destinations you go to for meetings/meet-ups/etc. Be sure to share them on social media too! Or maybe start a diary/journal. Draw a sketch when in a rut? Find something small to do every day when you start feeling it gets too much.

cool Find a hobby. Explore something new, or maybe go back to what you used to love as a kid. Devote at least 2 hours weekly to this and always have it as a priority in your schedule.

9) Reward yourself for all that hard work - whether that means going out with friends or buying yourself something nice after hitting a major goal as a remote worker. Reminding yourself of all the great things you've accomplished remote work-wise is so essential!

10) Unplug. Pick a day in the week and be offline for 24 hours. Do the things you love, spend the day with loved ones, or just do nothing, whatever makes you feel best

How much does it cost to use the carpooling platform?
Driveinhud is free to use for both riders and drivers. We do not charge any commissions, drivers receive the full amount paid by riders. We believe in empowering drivers and allowing them to earn the maximum benefit from their services.

Are there any charges or fees associated with using the platform?
To cover operational costs and provide a sustainable service, there is a one-time payment of N500 to create a trip. However, the first four trips created by a user are free of charge as an introductory offer. This allows users to experience the benefits of carpooling without any initial financial commitment.
I love this app. We made it to front page.

anthonyuncle:
high rate of unemployment has resulted to:

1. management bullying their employees.
it is generally believed in Nigeria that if you quit a job, you will be replaced before you get home.
this is due to the high number of unemployed people in the society.
this gives many employers the confidence to treat their employees as slaves.
not minding the effect of the job on one's health.

2.many job seekers not looking into the welfare part of their employment contract.
after months or years of being unemployed, being called for an interview alone is a testimony.
when offered the job, the excitement blinds many from taking a deep view of the contract.
even when some persons peruse the contract and see inhuman clauses, the fear of going back to be unemployed for months will prevent them from negotiating further or not taking the job.

it is what it is.
