egift: .NG is Nigeria's domain extension. Even with the burden many of us will carry for running our websites on it - My question is why in God's name should it cost N15,000 to register it when a website owner can get easily get a .com for less than N2k

Can someone explain to me why it should cost that much?

Because it is a landrush period, because high demand can spike pricing for commodities, because the whole world wants to grab.ng and sell.ng, because every.ng name is available and because NIRA should make profits... Do you want more reasons?

I think it's fair enough, .ly still sells for $99!

At GigaLayer all our servers are hosted with DCs with effective DDOS Protection. If you want to know how, I will explain little further. There are ways to actually detect and protect servers from DDOS, which includes and not limited to Firewall and Switches. When a pool of unusually traffic starts surging, rules are set with Firewall to protect against DoS immediately. Using switch limiting, also similar with Firewall the DC is able to detect and drop traffic received which exceeds the usual threshold for a target server, in some cases it can also be controlled by traffic shaping!

Even switching IP could help, although that's last resort which I can see was the option weighed in the above case you mentioned.

Lol, it was built by a team of top notched developers not some single web designer and it cost millions.

Iytech: I will like to know the website host of nairaland, foreign or local?. I think their hosting is good and reliable.

Nairaland is on a Dedicated Server, if you can afford that anywhere you'd have near zero uptime issues.

If you can't, try VPS.

Shared hosting comes with common issues because it's what it is, shared. Just like the face me I face you in house rent. Although good web hosts try their bests to ensure tenants don't wreck the server and affect others.

Great, give them some time or ask them how soon will the rest of the sites resume.

First of all, i am not in any way affiliated with this company but i would like to highligh some key things for you.

1) Facebook page might not be their primary support desk or even a convenient way to give customer support. You should stick to their support portal.

2) If you have been hosting with them for a while now, you may want to take a look at your past records with them before you take a decission. If the server is down, be sure they have hundreds of clients to answer to on this issue aswell which could be unsual for their support staff.

3) Nairaland might not be of help to you specifically, try to sort out with them. Ask them what the problem is and how fast will they restore you.

If it takes longer than you can tolorate, then you can switch host. But it could be just a temporary issue you know.

3) Click "Manage Domain"

Your host can fix this for you. They only need to tweak their cPanel security and reduce the IP strictness to lose. This means cPanel will still restrict by IP, but this time with range not exact IP.

So if your logged in with 123.123.112.122 even if your IP changes, it will recognise you as long as you are within the range 123.123.*.*

Mostly your network changes IP within a range. Cheers... Your problem solved.

What is the current bandwidth you are using? How much more are you looking at? Probabbly you have exceeded what they can allow on a shared server, you may require a VPS or Dedicated SVR.

Let me know what your consumption is like.

The site was hacked and I guess they didn't fix it in time, Google got it index!

these are my questions.

We are not sure of when they'll resume yet, sources says their office is found locked in Ibadan and other sources say the owner of the company got arrested (non of these information is authenticated though) But for now, GigaLayer can transfer your site while this down time is still on and put you back online.

Assuming you already have your files (all of the '/public_html/') in a tar.gz file and your datatabase in an SQL file (.sql)
1) Login to your new cPanel and upload your files back to /public_html/ folder.
2) Create a new database, user and add privileges to the new user, under cPanel's databases.
3) Go to PhpMyAdmin and import your .sql file into the appropriate database.

You're now done, but now you'd see your site showing error could not connect to the database 'abcd'@'localhost'. That means you need to update your WordPress config file which is in your /public_html/wp_config.php (assuming your wordpress is hosted on your main site.)

Edit the file wp_config.php and update the values for DB_NAME, DB_USER and DB_PASSWORD accordingly with your new database and the user you created in step 2) above. Do not change anything else.

Your site should resume back normal, if your name-servers are pointed to the new host.

Its quite easy for a competitor to jump at Syskay's failures and be happy but its quite painful if you have to think about you being at the receiving end.

Well I have made it clear... this is not cannibalism, we are only offering an OPTION to businesses hindered. My post could be amateur, accepted (i'm not a forum expert). But either ways, I apologize sincerely for it and anybody who finds it bizarre inclusive of Syskay!

Syskay is still down and we can move out all the sites that are affected. But it's option to the affected site owners, to move or wait till Syskay resumes.
