It wasn't age that made him retire but form. He had become very slow and wasn't making the first team regularly. As captain at the time, that wasn't good enough so it was better for him to bow out in a dignified matter

I don't think that those that replaced him were much improvements..
His "slow" displays from my perspective was a function of the position he was deployed to play and lack of activity at club level at that time..
I honestly think he should have stayed a bit longer.., but then that's just my opinion
