It's a real-life chapel that looks like the set of the Pirates of the Caribbean. The spine-tingling Sedlec Ossuary in the Czech Republic is estimated to hold the remains of between 40,000 and 70,000 people, many of whom died in the plague in 1318 and during the Hussite Wars in the 15th century. Known as the 'Skull Church,' the macabre building contains bodies that have been dismembered, de-fleshed and reassembled into decorative features including a bone chandelier and chalices and even a family crest constructed from human remains. Situated under the Cemetery Church of All Saints it features skull bunting artfully draped between beams, two large chalices, four baroque candelabras, six pyramids and candleholders - all made with bone. The centrepiece chandelier comprises of almost every bone in a human body, including seven arms formed from vertebrae, with candle-mounted skulls. The unusual design is said to represent a seven-headed beast, reminiscent of prophecies from the Book of Revelation in the Bible. Unsurprisingly, the 'Skull Church' has a history as chilling as its unconventional decoration. https://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2015/07/08/15/2A4709D900000578-3153546-Picture_shows_a_Baroque_period_bone_chandelier_in_the_Sedlec_Oss-a-136_1436364315026.jpg Baroque period bone-chandelier in the Sedlec Ossuary, a small Chapel beneath the Cemetery Church of All Saints in Sedlec The skeletons are said to have originally been buried at the church cemetery, which was shut at the end of the 15th century. Following this, the dug-up bones were moved to the chapel and positioned in pyramids. In 1870, local wood carver František Rint of Česká Skalice was tasked with the job of artfully arranging the bones and skulls into creative decorations. https://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2015/07/08/14/2A47023000000578-0-image-a-107_1436362907386.jpg In order to create a uniform look for his chilling building blocks, each skull was carefully bleached until it reached the desired colour https://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2015/07/08/14/2A4706C900000578-0-image-a-103_1436362896347.jpg The ossuary contains the remains of about 40 000 people and the current arrangement of bones dates from 1870 https://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2015/07/08/14/2A47049600000578-0-image-a-77_1436360580060.jpg Not for the faint-hearted, the ossuary features two large chalices, four baroque candelabras, six pyramids and candleholders - all made with bone

It easily surpassed its estimate of $85m as frantic bidding between seven potential buyers pushed up the price for the six-foot triptych, which was painted in 1969, and shows Bacon's friend Lucian Freud, the British painter. 9.$152.0m Portrait of Dr Gachet by Vincent van Gogh https://i.telegraph.co.uk/multimedia/archive/03299/Portrait_of_Dr_Gac_3299152c.jpg Van Gogh’s portrait of the medic who cared for him in the final months of his life broke records when it was sold in 1990. The portrait was bought by a Tokyo art dealer on behalf of Japanese industrialist Ryoei Saito. However, when Saito died in debt, the painting disappeared into the international art market and its whereabouts remain unknown. 8.158.4m Portrait of Adele Block-Bauer I by Gustav Klimt https://i.telegraph.co.uk/multimedia/archive/02471/klimt_2471578b.jpg Ronald Lauder, the cosmetics magnate, bought the gold-flecked portrait in 2006 for the Neue Galerie. At the time, it was a record paid for a painting. Its extraordinary story – seized by the Nazis during the Second World War and reclaimed by the rightful owner's niece only when she was in her eighties - is told in a recent film, Woman in Gold, starring Helen Mirren. 7.$158.5m Le Réve by Pablo Picasso https://i.telegraph.co.uk/multimedia/archive/03299/Le_Reve_by_Pablo_P_3299151c.jpg Another picture snapped up in 2013 by Steven Cohen, founder of SAC Capital and one of Wall Street's biggest art collectors. The deal had originally been agreed in 2006, but its owner Steve Wynn, the casino magnate, accidentally put his elbow through the canvas because of his failing eyesight. The deal went through after it had been repaired. 6. $162.4m Woman III by Willem de Kooning https://i.telegraph.co.uk/multimedia/archive/02471/dekooning_2471584b.jpg Another painting sold by David Geffen in 2006, it was bought by Steven Cohen, a hedge fund billionaire. It was the third in a series of six paintings by de Kooning, an abstract expressionist, done between 1951 and 1953. It was part of the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art collection, which meant it disappeared from view after strict rules on images of women introduced after the 1979 revolution 5.$165.4m No 5, 1948 by Jackson Pollock https://i.telegraph.co.uk/multimedia/archive/03299/No_5_by_Jackson_Po_3299149c.jpg A sale shrouded in secrecy and brokered by Sotheby's in 2006. David Martinez reportedly bough the 8-foot by 4-foot piece of fibreboard, covered in drips of brown and yellow paint from David Geffen, the Dreamworks co-founder and entertainment magnate. Mr Martinez's law firm later issued a statement saying he did not own it. 4.$179.3m Les Femmes d’Alger (Version O) by Pablo Picasso https://i.telegraph.co.uk/multimedia/archive/03298/_Les-femmes-d_Alge_3298862b.jpg Picasso created a series of 15 variations of Les femmes d’Alger inspired by the French master Eugene Delacroix who in 1834 had painted The Women of Algiers in their Apartment. Version O marks the culmination of the series and has long been considered the most important Picasso in private hands. 3.$186m No. 6 (Violet, Green and Red) by Mark Rothko https://i.telegraph.co.uk/multimedia/archive/03299/rothko_3299148a.jpg Dmitry Rybolovlev, a Russian billionaire, paid $186 million, setting a record for a work by the American painter.
