Sevilla have moved quickly to sign a defender to replace Arsenal-bound Sebastien Squillaci, agreeing a deal to land Alexis Ruano from Valencia.

Sevilla announced the agreement for the 25-year-old, subject to a medical, on their website. Local media reported the fee at around 5 million euros (£4.1m).

Alexis, who is set to sign a five-year contract, joined Valencia from Getafe in 2007 but never established a regular place.

Sevilla said on Sunday they had agreed to sell France defender Squillaci to Arsenal subject to a medical.

Sevilla host Portugal's Braga in the second leg of a Champions League playoff on Tuesday, needing to overturn a 1-0 deficit.

Arsenal look set to strengthen their defence with the signing of France international Sebastien Squillaci from Sevilla, after the Spanish club confirmed an offer had been received for the centre-half.

The Gunners are short of experienced cover at the back, having seen out-of-contract veterans William Gallas, Sol Campbell and Mikael Silvestre all leave in the summer.

Squillaci, 30, asked to be left out of Sevilla's Champions League play-off against Braga on Wednesday night to avoid being cup-tied.

The former Lyon defender is rated at around £6.5 million, but it remains uncertain whether Arsenal have matched that valuation.

A statement on the Sevilla website read: "Sebastien Squillaci's future is in the air.

"As was confirmed by sporting director Ramon Rodriguez at the airport in Porto, the club have received an offer from Arsenal. "The player asked coaches not to play him in the match."

Sevilla defender Julien Escude has extended his contract by two seasons, keeping him at the Liga club until 2013.

The France international, 31, joined Sevilla in 2006 after a spell at Ajax.

The former Rennes centre-half, who can also play left-back, was involved in Sevilla’s back-to-back UEFA Cup wins in 2006 and 2007 and their 2007 and 2010 Copa del Rey triumphs.
