No tourist for two years - Kenya domestic tourist fill the void - most hotels full booked https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tFbX8fUNDoc |
Obaboon, I was kinda hoping you'll defy our prediction and upgrade your bonobo alpha software to at least beta, so you can realize Kenya is going places . We just pulled another 9.9 after 10 percent 2nd quarter. See when you thought Kenya was tourism - we are pulling double digit growth amid COVID-19. Our strength I keep repeating is Africa most resilient economy built on top of economic diversity of Africa best human capital. You cannot beat that...it is the sustainable economic growth magic that will see Kenya move to be Africa Lion in 10-15yrs...our people..not minerals..not natural resources. Kenya's economy grew by 9.9 percent in the three months to September 30, compared to 10.1 percent in the second quarter of 2021, the government statistics agency said on Friday. NAIROBI, December 14, 2021 — Kenya’s economy has demonstrated resilience to the COVID-19 shock, with output in the first half of the year rising above pre-pandemic levels. In 2021 as a whole, gross domestic product (GDP) is expected to grow by 5%, one of the faster recoveries among Sub-Saharan African countries. obaaderemi: |
This year Mombasa has few tourist - North coast - Nyali - and South Coast - Diani https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bA9SvQRj3EU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HNGjU8-_voI |
Remove your blinkers and you'll see the beautiful kenyan flag - representing the only large non mineral economy of sub saharan africa - showing what is possible in Africa - if Africans engage their brains and their muscles. samorobo: |
As always I am jumping the year in Mombasa. This year at English Point Marina in Nyali Mombasa. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rf61squwfr0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y1gCawGYeeg |
Kenya about 2hours to join 2022...reminder of last year of fireworks. Epic firework displays expected at Britam, KICC and GTO towers and all over the city. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3eBaqcIBIU8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PeyXjRf_cVc |
It's been running non stop from 2017 - that is 5yrs: We constructed it in 2-3yrs; You quickly tried to copy us - and now 6yrs year later - you're still constructing your railway - stuck in 1st phase of 300kms - Meanwhile Kenya SGR has probably carried 10 million passengers ![]() Kazikazi: |
I get you. I am for balanced news. Slums and Posh areas of Africa should all be shown. I am not for hidding our ghettos. And I am not for making Africa look like one big ghetto. But is within out control how people want to potray us? GeneralDae: |
As for poverty porn - some Youtubers like these two have done great job promoting Kenya and Africa https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IKlq_u3yY3A&t=214s |
TZ SGR is going to take another 10yrs to be completed.. gallivant: |
I don't think we should hide our poverty but of course it's not all poverty porn - there is good part of africa. Africa is poor. The west is rich. Those are not stereotypes - but yes we need more balanced reporting. I dont think there is some conspiracy - some come for fun side of Africa - some come for poverty porn. Bottomline: Once you fix your city like Kagame has done in Kigali - it's gonna be hard to do the poverty porn. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u9L2ig1PXrg GeneralDae: |
Bitter truth served cold. AfriqueDuZuid: |
Yeah make sense for Zim and Kenya to be amongst the top in sub sahara SUFFERInSMILIIN: |
Of course, there is no single factor, but they are key factors, demographic being one of them, now South Africa has a problem of lower HCI (poor educational outcomes plus healthcare ravaged by HIV-AIDS), so you great demographics but your people are ill-educated and sick. You need to fix that to move from middle class to upper middle class like Mauritius has managed. HIV-AIds and related health care challenges are on the mend - but your education continues to be radarless (dont talk about a few universities). It appears immigrants are filling the void - in the job market - but it's not sustainable. If I was South African president - I would reform the education sector totally - adopt strategies by countries like Veitnam that has risen them rise in PISA exams. South Africa need to banish completely the Bantu Education apertheid - by ensuring black majority - are going to school to study - with best teachers - even if it mean hiring zimbwabweans - and focus on STEM. Bantu Education Act -It also prohibited mathematics and science from being included in the curriculum of the Black education system. The act was created in the belief that maths and sciences were not necessary in the preparation of the young Black South Africans for the low-wage labourthey were being groomed to perform AfriqueDuZuid: |
It rarely linear. Kenya median age was 18-19 in 1950-1970s - then we had a baby boom - and it dropped to 15yrs - for a long time - and it has been rising slowly. It takes lot of time to alter demographics. The major inflection point demographically - happened in 2016 - when we for first time had 5-10 cohort being larger than 0-5. Now that age group is 10-15 - and largest - meanwhile 5-10, 0-5 are less and less.In next 5yrs - the current under 10-15 will be 15-20 - that start of getting out dependancy - and in a decade they will be 20-25 - and Kenya median age will probably be about 25 if not more. AfriqueDuZuid: |
I am not sure what is latest for Kenya but I suspect we should be above that. Country start to become developed when median age is about 35 yrs - middle class about 25yrs. China is 38 Mauritius is also 38. You can only develop when you demographically transition from youthful population that is dependent to working age population - lots of people working - supporting very few - that means more savings/investment/productivity. Kenya has to aim to improve it's mean age to 28 to get to South Africa level. South Africa has to move to 35yrs to get to Mauritus or China level AfriqueDuZuid: |
Good start. Something Nairobi miss is one big train/bus station - central bus/train station. Something like this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=935Y-PMNlQ8 68816419: |
There are many IQ ranking all over the internet. Not sure which one is credible samorobo:
|
I am gonna say sports is not a good measure of a country intelligence - chess is a measure of individual intelligence no doubt - but they are mass exams - like IQ tests - or education assessment tests like PISA - that tells us how a country is doing. Someone has to go to Nigeria - and conduct a scientific study on Intelligence of Nigerians - and do the same in Kenya. samorobo: |
Yes British is very segmented society - with an almost Indian like caste system - that is almost hard to beat - unlike the American where all dreams are valid - and football as popular as it is - remain a poor man game - the upper class are into rugby, cricket, tennis, golf and motor sports. The same is also true in Kenya - people living west of Nairobi cbd dont give a flying rat about football - but cares about rugby and motor sports - the lower middle class will discuss arsenal/chelsea till morning - while people in the slums actually love football enough to attend local league. The rich of course play their golfs and polos. kikuyu1: |
Why is Africa poor: Gold smuggling continues unabated. Uganda stealing 2.5B dollars worth of DRC gold and Rwanda is inching to 1Billion dollars - all from DRC Congo - annually. Meanwhile Chinese and Indians are taking Ghana golds unnoticed. Nigeria is even worse...100,000 informal miners with zero official gold production. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2021-12-28/where-does-gold-come-from-in-africa-suspected-smuggling-to-dubai-rings-alarms?utm_campaign=socialflow-organic&utm_source=twitter&utm_content=africa&cmpid%3D=socialflow-twitter-africa&utm_medium=social |
When do you think that will happen Obaboon. They are going to junior secondary school next year. So far the biggest complains is coming from parents due to assignments and cost....but unlike South Africa..kenya teachers are not complaining. Parents will get used to practical lessons - and learner led education. Meanwhile you cannot even dream of changing a comma in the inherited education systems that was designed for a different era and economy obaaderemi: |
How does population factor in? What matters is the structure of the population . I keep repeating this so many times. China has 1.5B people - but unlike Nigeria - they are not babies - they are mostly working adults. Tanzania and South Africa have nearly 60M people each - but the population structure is completely different. Kenya population wise is starting to transition into that - it's called demographic dividend. Nigeria is hopeless - as the North continues to breed like rats. obaaderemi: |
You cannot teach me any thing tech in Kenya please. The Nigerian was pit player - who provided seed funding for the music business - before cellulant went fintech. The engine has always been Ken Njoroge. obaaderemi: |
In kenya it the same - football is the game for lower and lower middle class - and the middle-upper class play rugby. In the US the same - lower class and soccer mums plays football - but as people rise the economic ladder - the find football to a little booring - just kicking the ball around the field. |
You want me to sugar coat it? Let start from Britain - the inventors of football. https://www.grin.com/document/304713 Today's football is said to be invented by villagers trying to shoot some kind of ball, made of a pig’s bladder, to particular points in the opponents village.[6] Since it have been people of rural background, all belonging to the working class, who played this game it is not surprising that football remained a working class sport Rugby Since an actual middle class stratum arose rather late out of the working class it is no wonder that the favourite middle-class sport rugby emerged, compared to the other sports, relatively recently. In the beginning it was accredited to have a highly educational factor. The public schools saw rugby as very important in training discipline, fairness and community cohesion.[9] Overall it was supposed to create gentlemen and promoted strong lifelong solidarity between school members. But from these bonds created in school, obaaderemi: |
Most Somalis have their issues but character wise they are not thugs or lowlife like most Nigerians. Most Ethiopeans have their issues but character wise they are not stealing or selling drugs like NIgerians. Most kenyans have their own issues but they are not liars, thugs, criminals and petty thieves. As a country you need to work on your character - you need to severely punish the fraudsters, the drug dealers (some countries do death sentence), thugs (in kenya robbery with any violence is death sentences) - etc. Being poor is not excuse to be a fraudster or a thug or a drug dealer. Try being a thief in kenya - Kenyans will either lynch you or the police will just shoot you dead. If you're lucky to go to court - you are looking at death sentences (now commuted to life imprisonment). Kids knows crimes doesnt pay. When in 1970s - kenya started descending into South Africa like crime - we swiftly enacted death sentence for any robbery - crimes like drug dealing also attract life imprisoment - trafficking maybe 30yrs. Kenya penal code of robbery with ANY (even a kitchen knife) violence. ‘(1) Any person who commits the felony of robbery is liable to imprisonment for fourteen years. (2) If the offender is armed with any dangerous or offensive weapon or instrument, or is in company with one or more other person or persons, or if, at or immediately before or immediately after the time of the robbery, he wounds, beats, strikes or uses any other personal violence to any person, he shall be sentenced to death.’ mhkent: |
I actually knew Ken Njoroge like 20yrs ago - I once interned at 3Mice - that is web development company that he co-founded - before Cellulant - during my time at university. obaaderemi: |
Kenya has issues of course - corruption, name it - but Kenya doesn't have oil and minerals - neither does it have arable land. That is big difference. You have no excuse to be worse than Kenya. obaaderemi: |
Football is popular sport - because it's an easy sport - it's not cerebral at all. It's one of the most stupid game out there - played by stupid people with stupid coaches. In Europe it's a sports for lower class white and blacks. The middle class play rugby and stuff like formulae 1. obaaderemi: |
Obabon, you want me dead already. I believe CBC is experiencing teething problems - and is a BIG step in right education. Kenya has the ingredients to succeed because we already took education seriously. obaaderemi: |
