Nairaland GeneralPictures Of A Nairalander's 'daughter' Wedding by s3nn2x(op):
It happened on the 21st of September, 2013 in Lagos, South-Western Nigeria.

My elder sister('Daughter' because our father is late and being the first and only son...) got married to her heartthrob of over 13 years on the said day.

I thought of what to do for her, then I decided on Nairaland.

Nairaland is more like a Virtual world home to me, I spend over 80percent of my online time on Nairaland. I have made some friends here, some enemies also and those who don't care.

I hope this get to the front page sha.

TV/MoviesX2D Set To Begin Test Transmission For 24-hour Gospel Entertainment Channel by s3nn2x(op): 8:39am On Sep 20, 2013
One of Nigeria’s foremost gospel entertainment outfits, Xclusive 2 Divinity (X2D) is set to commence test transmissiontwittertober 5, 2013, towards the launch of its 24-hour gospel entertainment channel on cable TV.
The channel will provide “quality gospel inspired entertainment for the entire family” with full broadcast kicking off in December 2013 on INFINITY TV and MYTV (free to air) platforms to an estimated audience of over 40 million viewers across Africa with plans to extend to 3 more platforms within the next 12 months.
According to Mr. Deji Irawo, CRO of X2D, “Nigerians and by extension Africans in Diaspora can expect full blown gospel entertainment in the best of gospel music videos, interviews, showbiz, drama and lifestyle.”
He said the gospel entertainment channel evolved from “the increasing demand for more gospel entertainment content from all quarters” hence his decision to rise up to the challenge of building a 24-hour gospel channel with the aim of providing quality gospel inspired entertainment for the entire family.
“Our plan is to create, acquire and broadcast high quality gospel inspired entertainment to Africa and the diaspora. The X2D channel promises to be a highly sought-after gospel entertainment channel in view of its rich blend of highly entertaining content and excellent packaging which will include music videos, events, talk shows, children programming, reality, magazine, comedy, drama, film, human angle documentaries, inspirational content and many more,” he said.
Mr. Irawo also assured viewers of the organization’s readiness to effectively run the entertainment channel.
The X2D brand has over the years contributed to the growth of gospel entertainment in Nigeria from an initial broadcast on one channel in July 2008, and has now aired on over forty TV channels globally bringing to its viewers an exciting mix of well packaged music videos, comedy, interviews, concerts, behind the scenes of video shoots, album launch events, red carpet moments, lifestyle content, with several awards following such as the 2011 Africa Gospel  music awards UK for Best Gospel TV show in Africa and the diaspora, Kingdom Africa award for Best Gospel TV show 2011, and special recognition for contribution to the gospel industry by Nigeria gospel music awards, amongst others.

PoliticsMalaysia Never Took Oil Palm Seed From Nigeria – Dr. Okwuagwu by s3nn2x(op): 6:34am On Sep 20, 2013
There has been notion among Nigerians that Malaysia came to Nigeria some years ago to get seedlings for oil palm which has placed the country as number one oil palm producing country while Nigeria lags behind in ranking.
But this assertion was debunked recently by crop scientists when some select journalists, fellows of the Biosciences for Farming in Africa (B4FA,) were in the Nigerian Institute for Oil Palm Research (NIFOR).
JIMOH BABATUNDE captured the presentations of Dr. (Mrs.) Christy Okwuagwu, the most senior crop scientist at the institute.
Here is an excerpt.
On how Malaysia got its oil palm seeds
Malaysia has overtaken Nigeria in palm oil production.  I want you to see the well documented origin of the very original planting materials for oil palm in Malaysia.
The earliest record of palm into Far East Asia was four seedlings planted in a botanical garden in 1848 in java in the Dutch East Indies.
Two of these were from Amsterdam botanical garden, but it is not known how they originated, the other from Bogo or Mauritius in Indian Ocean. The palm that sprang from these four seedlings was all quite similar and they were supposed originally produced from Amsterdam through some African unknown origin.
These four seedlings formed the entire source of the planting materials in Malaysia and that we say the entire population of planting materials in Malaysia have a very narrow genetic base. We don’t normally entirely depend on them for breeding and development. Actually it is necessary they depend on us and subsequent materials to improve their planting materials.
The original materials never came from Africa, never came from Nigeria. They were from Dutch expedition of the early 19th century and because they discovered that the crops had economic advantage in their land they started multiplying these seedlings and raising them as plantation crops. They don’t have natural populations. This is the source of everything in south East Asia.
So, there is no way to assume that Malaysia came to Nigeria and got planting materials and now they have over taken us. They never did. People say this carelessly but they did not. I know you are journalists, this is one of the basic information I want you to debunk in every situation, because we know truly that it is true the Dutch expedition that the Malaysians had these planting materials in the 19th century.
On the birth of NIFOR
Plantation had expanded in South East Asia at that time, but, our people are still depending on the wide groves, so come the turn of the 20th century they found it very necessary to have research stations to develop plantation technology and by 1922 they started going to the wide groves to do genetic selections and by 1939 NIFOR was established, where all the genetic materials will be assembled, evaluated and developed into a plantation crop.
Plantation crop never existed in this country. It was the hope of the colonial masters that plantation crops developed and once the plantation crop develops, the oil palm develops into a plantation crop, and then they can compete with organised south East Asia that already had their own plantation crop development.
This never happened unfortunately, after 1939 we now had research into oil palm with NIFOR as headquarters, we had in Ghana, Freetown, Sierra Leone.  These were the three centres where these centres were established. Nigeria remains the oil palm station.
Come 1954 the name was changed to West African oil palm research institute, no longer a research station, but a research institute. A full fledge research institute not just to carry out research on genetic development, but other diverse technology development to support the industry.
We became WIFOR, West African Oil Research Institute, but when the component countries became independent, they took their own research stations to become their national research stations. Ours became Nigerian institute for oil palm research that is what we are today....

PoliticsNigeria Loses $10m To Foreign Registered Private Jets by s3nn2x(op): 1:06am On Sep 20, 2013
The federal government said, yesterday, that Nigerian owners of foreign registered private jets were taking out of the country annually over $10 million through payment of foreign cockpit crew, charges and taxes overseas.

According to government, this has further assisted to boost capital flight out of the country.

Coordinating General Manager, Corporate Communications of Aviation Agencies, Mr. Yakubu Dati, who disclosed this in Lagos, also revealed that owners of private jets who use them to operate illegal charter services were ripping off the country of well-deserved revenue and destroying legally registered commercial charter operators who abide by the regulations of Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA.

He said it was to stop the exploitation of the country and grow the business of registered charter operators that the regulatory agency slammed $3,000 on every operation of private jet owners who use their aircraft to carry out illegal services.

He said operators of foreign registered private jets also abstained from paying import duties, five per cent VAT charges and five per cent passenger service charge, PSC, to the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA, thus denying the country of the needed revenue.

He said the total amount of money that Nigeria loses to this category of operators was in excess of $15 billion annually, excluding charges paid by aircraft used for charter services.

Dati said of the 139 private jets operating in Nigeria, 87 were registered overseas, while 52 were registered locally.

He explained that when aircraft was registered overseas, it was assumed to be visiting Nigeria as it usually registered under a foreign operator, adding that the implication of this was non-payment import duty when coming into Nigeria.

“The aircraft pilots and engineers must be foreigners whose licences are registered in that country the aircraft is registered and this means that no Nigerian is operating any of these 87 aircraft as pilot; no Nigerian engineer can be employed to maintain the aircraft.

“Then every year the owner of the aircraft must pay charges to continue to maintain the aircraft under the foreign operator in which the aircraft was registered,” Dati explained

He lamented that though much of the money used to purchase the aircraft was earned and generated in Nigeria, owner of the jets abstain from paying taxes to the Nigerian government, having registered the jets oversea.

Dati said: “It is also worthy of note that 80 per cent of those aircraft registered overseas are also used for illegal charter operation and when used as charter, they do not pay the five per cent VAT tax and the five per cent passenger service charge, PSC, to NCAA as they did not register as charter aircraft ab initio.”

He estimated that 80 per cent of 87 foreign registered aircraft operating in the country was 69, adding that at the average cost of charter of $7,000 per hour, the jets made $1.449 million daily without paying taxes and PSCs.

“So these aircraft earn $1,449,000 million per day and the five per cent VAT tax and five per cent NCAA charges which they do not pay, if deducted from the above earning would amount to $144, 900 per day.

“In a year this would amount to $51, 584, 400 or N8. 2 billion and this is a fragment of the import duties which is estimated to be in billions of

PoliticsBen Bruce - Spending $8bn On Fuel Importation Is Crazy by s3nn2x(op): 12:58am On Sep 20, 2013
Federal government came under a heavy knock from the Chairman of Silver Bird Group, Ben Bruce , when he  lashed out on the government for spending $8 billion on fuel importation annually.
Bruce was speaking in Abuja at the launching of a book entitled “Why Run Before Learning To Walk”, written by Professor Turner Isoun and Miriam Isoun .
He attributed the ongoing Academic Staff Union of University, ASUU strike in the country to lack of fund, which he said was a direct implication of the $8 billion spent by federal government annually on fuel importation and called for total removal of oil subsidy to enable government tackle other critical needs.
“The reason why Nigeria is broke is because we spend $8 billion a year, to buy patrol that generates smoke.  We need to address that issue, a lot of our problems are self inflicting. The laziness of some people in government in government must come to an end.  The expensive life style, popping of Champaign must stop.  We must go back to the era of creativity.
“When people are poor, they struggle to become rich, when people have nothing, they dream and think and use their imagination. Rich people are not going to be next NollyWood stars. They have money and resources. The stars of this country are going to come from Ajegunle, poor homes, single parent homes, homes where they have no money, homes where they have one meal a day. These are the kind of people we should have in government with imagination,” he noted.
Bruce further lambasted the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU for complaining of poor funding, after opposing total removal of fuel subsidy, saying, the union must be realistic in their demand rather than playing to the gallery.
“When ASUU went on strike, they asked President, “why will you spend $8 billion a year on fuel importation, when he could have spend it on their welfare.” When subsidy was removed, they opposed government action for removing subsidy and is now demanding for better pay, you can’t oppose deregulation and on the other hand, demand for higher pay” he  stated.
The Silver Bird boss, who expressed disappointment with the way a politicians spend public fund, called for adoption of renewable energy and a paradigm shift from being a lazy and consuming nation to a creative and manufacturing nation.
He also lambasted some state commissioners for investing public fund in the importation of tricycle, which he said is a 150 years old technology that should not be allowed into Nigeria, instead , he advocated for adoption of latest and more efficient technologies that would deliver better services to the people.
“The problem of this country can be solved, but too much money makes us lazy and incompetent. We must have renewable energy. We have the sun, so we should use solar power. We have what most people want and therefore, we should use electric cars, and we will not spend $8 billion to import fuel every year.
“Right now, a lot of ministries, federal and states, have too much money.  President and governors should not give them any money. Too much money makes them lazy and less money makes them use their imagination and think.”

PoliticsPolice Lied About My Release – Kattey by s3nn2x(op): 12:48am On Sep 20, 2013
THE Archbishop of the Niger Delta Province, Anglican Communion, Most Rev. Ignatius Kattey, on Wednesday said the police lied over claims that they (police) were responsible for his release from the hands of kidnappers.

Kattey was abducted on September 6, 2013 and taken to an unknown destination before he regained his freedom.

But Kattey, who spoke with newsmen at his country home in Alode, Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State, insisted that contrary to reports that the police rescued him, he (Kattey) only saw the police two days ago (Monday) since his abduction.

He, however,  commended the police for their efforts after his kidnap, while  maintaining that his release from captivity was through divine intervention.

“The Police did not rescue me. They were not the ones who rescued my wife, Beatrice. I saw the police for the first time two days ago since the incident.

“I have heard the statements made by the Rivers Police Public Relations Officer. The police are telling lies. If you cannot trust the police again, then who can you trust? I told the Commissioner of Police and he has apologised.

“I know they made efforts. but they did not rescue me and my wife. A helicopter flew over the area more than 500 times, but the boys (kidnappers) were smarter. They held me in a thick forest and no one could see me there.

“On the day of my release, they moved me and we trekked a number of kilometres till we got to a road. [quote]Then they gave me N200 and ordered me to walk to the direction where I could get a motorcycle.

“We thank God for His mercies because I wouldn’t even wish my enemy to go through that experience,” the archbishop, who is also the Dean of Anglican Communion in Nigeria, added.

Explaining that he was not tortured by his captors, Kattey pointed out that he was not aware if any ransom was paid for his release.

“I was not tortured. They fed me on fast food once a day, sometimes on boli (roast plantain). They tied and chained my legs, but one of them said ‘you can’t chain this man.” http://www.punchng.com/news/police-lied-about-my-release-kattey/

my father died last year, and my mother is not even from my state, but my sister did her traditional wedding in the village. The good thing is that virtually all my parent's siblings are based in Lagos. So we are familiar with them. BTW, we don't even go home regularly, it was my father's burial that took us to the village last year.
FamilyRe: Traditional Marriage In The Village, Is It Compulsory? by s3nn2x(m): 5:53pm On Sep 19, 2013
I think it is ideal for your friend to do hers in the village because she has to know her roots na. Her father knows what he is talking about. The same thing happened to my elder sister. She wanted to do her traditional marriage in Lagos because we were born and bred here, but my mother and family members refused because that would have been the only time of her going to the village. Her introduction was done in Lagos, traditional wedding was done in the village and white wedding will be done in Lagos this Saturday.

So, if money is not an issue, I will advise your friend to do it in the village.
