Business / Re: Ex-bankers: How Is Life Outside Banking? by sabak: 9:26am On Nov 04, 2013
I worked in the banking industry for 8 years. I got a down sizing letter some day and walked home feeling free, cos I was working in the bank just because I didnt find the courage to face the uncertainties of quitting. However the moment I saw my sack letter, I had mixed feelings. One was that I was happy to have been set free from bondage and the second, was that I thought I should be the ones firing my employers and not the other way round. At the time, I was not in debt and as such had full access to my severance pay and some savings I had. so I knew I could survive for atleast a year. I decided the professional exams I wanted to write and went ahead without hesitation cos the banking career was so squeezing that it was difficult top do serious studies while on the job. I concluded my preferred certification in 10 months and and was fast running out of cash, but had already set up a consulting firm. Done my website and all marketing materials and I hit the streets. In the first four months I got brief which paid me more than my annual salary in the bank and as I speak, I have made three times my annual salary in the bank and looking to add more before close of business on 31st December. I have my time to myself and have enjoyed every bit of my life. I am happier and now pity bank workers. A lot of my friends who also left have been forced back to the industry because they couldn't make a head way. I am sorry for them but pray they will be able to find their way soon. The keep is to ensure your are always in credit balance and keep increasing your cash balance. This gives you a float to survive on when you are out. The second is to identify the area of life where you are gifted and have competitive advantage in, go for a formal training and set out. You will never go wrong. Life outside banking has been rewarding, enjoyable and fulfilling for me. I will never work for anyone again in my life.

secondly, every bank is in the business of financial intermediation, taking from the surplus sector to lend to the deficient sector, and if someone is a Deputy manager in his bank, and comes to an interview and says if you make me a Manager, i will do this and that, then its only fair and responsible for him to atleast do up to 40% of this and that as an indication that if he is confirmed there will be hope he can do 100%. And please yeeeeees, the cheaper the deposits the better for the bank and its customers.
Career / Re: Oceanic Bank Sack Over 1500 Staffs In 30days by sabak: 10:51am On Jul 30, 2009
@darqly "recruitment errors" are a constant feature in HR practice, prospective employees are hired on the basis on the educational exposue, experience, technical expertise and know how, at the point of the interview, there is no way you can know if the person can translate all of these to result, which is the key performance factor, that is why in every organisation, there is a pre confirmation period during which the organisation reviews ur performance to confirm is u are suitable for employment, it is after this that you are confirmed or shown the way out. So there was no shooting in the foot here, even the best organisations in the world allow that window, to identify recruitment errors.
Career / Re: Oceanic Bank Sack Over 1500 Staffs In 30days by sabak: 2:31pm On Jul 29, 2009
Mr poster U are a big shame. To start with, how many organisations are to feeling the bite of the Global melt down. Multinationals like Zain, Cadbury, Guiness have all down-sized in the past 2 months

Now, no one was sacked in oceanic bank for sending emails, instead offenders were debited after series of warnings in that respect. Yea in oceanic today, management has reduced tolerance for misconducts  which most employees in the industry will tell you that in the past  8yrs, Oceanic has been the most benovelent bank in terms of  giving offenders a second chance. This is exactly what led to a mass influx of other banks staff into oceanic bank within the past three years as the bank emerged as the most employee friendly bank in the industry.

with the influx of people, understandably, the level of indiscipline , also rose as most staff started taking management for granted. Oceanic  remains one of the few banks in the industry where as a marketing staff u dont need hypertensive  medication to stay on your Job, but some of these new entrants came in to exploit the situation, making frivolous pledges of the deposits they can mobilize in other to get mindblowing bargains. You normally need 6 months to get your confirmation your perfomance is judged to be satisfactory, but most of the people sacked have had extra one year of grace and yet cannot account for up to 5% of their pre-confirmation financial targets agreed with the bank before employment, and which formed the basis for the grades they got on there way in. They intended to come and reap without sowing.

Most of them were never do wells who were under pressure to perform in their previous banks, and ran for shelter in Oceanic bank to experience the proverbial peace. The rest are people who were involved in fraud or serious misconducts, theere were cases of people who were transfered to other units and branches, and they refused to resume at their new posts claiming they didn't like where they were posted.

Pls this is a recession, and the least any organisation can do is to shed off all negative baggages, like the poster who I believe must have been relieved of his duties for one  of the reasons above.

In terms of performance, in spite of the provisioning , Oceanic still decalred a profit of 9billion+ after tax, first bank declared 12billion+ after tax, and this results were impressive. Oceanic made a profit of 53 billion plus, and the fact remains that having made this provisioning, any of the loans recovered will automatically recognised as profit, and given the fact that most of the loans are for the oil and gas industries, they will be recovered. For the informed, it is clear that the financial report of Oceanic bank, marks it out as a resilient organisation and reinforces its postion as one of Nigeria's leading banks.

Mr Poster move on with your life and stop creating crisis for a Bank that employs thousands, of responsible working class people in Nigeria, make sure you are a better employee in your next job. You are a big shame.

I WANT TO LAY THE FACTS DOWN FOR U-

1) ALMOST ALL WOMEN GOOD  OR BAD ARE CAPABLE OF DOING WHAT YOUR FIANCEE DID

2)IF ITS ONE OF U CAN CONSIDER GIVING HER A SECOND CHANCE

3) IF U DECIDE TO DO THAT U MUST GIVE URSELF 12 CALENDER MONTHS OR MORE DEPENDING  ON UR RATE OF HEALING

4)u must drop all emotions and consider all circumstances in the matter

5) the only fulcrum on which a decision to move on should be made is that there is apparently real regret on her part, a and she demonstrates practically that sticking with you means the world to her

6) in all these,  u must realise that dumping her doesn't guarantee a better deal with the next eve, this take us back to (1). almost all eves can love u and still cheat on u, just like all men can. The best of men is still a man at at best.

I survived  infidelity in a long term relationship that ultimately ended in marriage. I love my wife more now, trust her more now, and I am having a lifetime of fun and happiness. You will never forget, that's true, but u can forgive completely like in my case, and that's all u need to be happy.

My circumstances and urs are not the same, cos in my case, my would be wife came to me withoutany suspicion on my side and made the confessions, it took a while but with God we were able to put it behind, u can read  my past posts to search my story out. But if there is enough character from both ends, u can still forge the kind of marriage all around will be envious of, but of course, all parties must first learn the lessons their in. In the time being u start by  reducing the status of that relationship to being just friends, no sex no intimacy , then take it from there.
Car Talk / Re: . by sabak: 6:12pm On May 15, 2009
Coolfaced is a blessing in disguise, the neo-colonial mentality that women can become happy calling men's bluff is the biggest social catstrophy of our time. A mans ego is the one thing no human can toy with without consequences, except of course the man is living on his knees. Even at that, keen observation has shown that even on his knees, a man just needs one chance at life to teach his captor a lesson, if his ego has been bruised.

If you are a woman and u find a man that is worth the while, coolfaced has the formula that works all the time, all the time I said, and has never failed. It puts u in charge without the man suspecting a thing, or feeling less of the Lord he sees him self as. Seeking his opinion when what u are actualling doing is influencing him to agree with u. You will get anything from a man who is in love with you, and feels worshipped by you at the same time. You will call the shots and he will let it go gratefully. But in spite of love, when a man feels he is loosing grip of things, he fights back so hard, that the woman cant stand her ground. I don't know if I have made any sense to the discerning.

Do women have their own manual as do men? u read coolfaced right, she's got one, and keeps updating it, so should all discerning women. A word is enough for the wise.

leave finecat, he is just a fool, to him and his likes, bankers are -- tellers and OND level marketers because those are the ones he has access to. let me tell the house, as it is now, 60% of Nigeria's most intelligent graduates are employed in the banking sector because thats is where the opportunities are, if the opportunities come else where, its this same 6o% that will swarm there and out do people like finecat. look at telecoms, at the advent of GSM coys, where did they source most of there top management staff. the head of training in my bank left a few month ago to head training at chevron, about one and half years ago, first bank poached the head of hr at shell, do u think it takes coins to hire people wey pass test wey u know fit pass. go to top universities in the UK and do an analysis of Nigerian students in their post graduate schools, 65% or more are from naija's banking industry, preparing themselves to take advantage in an emerging economy, u dey here dey do multilevel marketing abi weting u call am. better re define your path.
Career / Re: 60% Of Bankers To Lose Their Jobs? by sabak: 3:51pm On Aug 26, 2008
I  wonder when this banker haters syndrome will stop. at every turn, you see people who cant afford to eat three times a day cursing bankers or bank workers as being stupid for the careers they chose. people just don't seem capable of standing bankers or bank workers forgetting that career is about choice which in turn is determined by a cluster of factors. I work in a bank, and i recall that the day i wrote my employment test, we had over2500 people at the exam center, and at the end of the day, only 31 of us were shortlisted for interviews be4 further screening was effected to select the successful candidates. now why wont people hate banks when  about 2400 people on that occasion had the doors shut to their faces  for not cutting the marks.

About future and security, nothing can ever guarantee financial security aside from being the best in what u do.oil coys  do staff reduction as demanded by critical factors for efficiency, sustainability and profitability just as shell  nig did sometime recently. A recent study on small and medium scale industries and companies indicate that 90% of  them  fold up withing 5yrs of inception due to the harsh business environment in Nigeria. and i am sure that is where all these banker haters fall in.

Good, entrepreneurship is the best when u want to take ur destiny in ur hands, but in making the decision, to go private, u have to have a clear idea of what u want to do, develop the expertise in what u want to do, understand management processes and techniques, make the necessary contacts that you will need and of course  have funds or assets that can help you raise funds  and generally have a deep understanding of how finance works, because that is at the center of the heart of ur business. then even before all these u have to be sure of who u are and  what u can excel in.

for instance, a colleague i met at the interview that gave me my first banking job was a civil engineer who was earning 20k at the time in a construction firm, but he asked me what i would do if i was in his shoes, that he was passionate about his engineering and wanted to go abroad for further studies. but that funding was a problem. I simply told him the baking job which offered 1m per annum at the time will make more sense as he could do it for a while and raise the money he needed to fund his further studies which will put him in better stead in his engineering career. he took the advice, and in three years he had been promoted about twice with about three salary review s which too him to close to 3m per annum in those three years and by that time he had raised enough money to travel abroad for his further studies. he will probably come back to this country soon as a consultant engineer while those bank haters amongst u who couldn't even get bank jobs even if they wanted will be here  as formen in construction sites.

i have oil coy friends who complain they would have  preferred  careers that gave them access to people  and finance instead of rigs and water, it depends on what u want to make out of your life. OKEY NWOSU the MD of FIRST INLAND BANK is a first class petroleum engineering graduate, he started off with slumberger, then left for Arthur Andersen before veering into banking, i don't know how many of u banker haters have cousins or uncles that can dine with him

pls the bankers and bank workers have chosen their path, choose your and  stay focused instead of wishing people who are moving ahead with their lives  without noticing you ill luck

that guy is to young to  give an answer to that question, may be two years after graduation , depending on how fast things move for him, he may be ready to give a meaningful answer. if you want to end up with your school boy friend, its a long wait, but if you believe in him and what you share, you could wait.

my wife was my university girlfriend we were together for 8years before we got married, and when we did she was  just below 30yrs old, but she tells me everyday that the wait was worth the while, and  for me, i cant be more grateful that she did. but i must be quick to warn that all the positives must be there before you decide to wait, the guy must be very smart, very hardworking and forward looking, he has to be a go getter who wont give excuses for not breaking even this is because to marry no be moi moi, he has to wither against a very rough economy where opportunities are scarce.

then very importantly too, he has to show through out the waiting period that he appreciates every second you wait, this appreciation must be actively gauged while the wait lasts. any i don't care attitude should put you on the alert. now don't get scared, my wife and i got it right, and i am sure you both can if you believe in it. but certainly, its not a talk for a roving campus guy, he has to leave school first, then you can tell

Romance / Re: Why Do Girls Think That Bankers Are Flirts? by sabak: 4:41pm On Dec 28, 2007
bankers and bank wokers seem to have become endangered species in Nigeria. the negative passion with which people talk about the industry and its employees, professional or not is frightening. i begin to get this feeling that theres a lot of envy that is mixed in the whole stuff. i wonder what banking or working in a bank has got to do with flirting.

you need to know what the disposition of the average Nigerian lady or girl is to people who can pay there bills. i guess its just because banks are all comers zone, and so its easy to build an impression that is baseless.

people who earn money in Nigeria and appear to be comfortable , not even rich are in incredible demand by the the female folk. and aside from employees in the oil industry which actually dwarfs all others, no other industry pays as much as the banking industry, not even the telecoms industry that a few people have suggested .

so the tendency is for a security man in a bank , to be at advantage over a security man in a cement factory to ladies.
with due apologies to the few decent ladies who still exist, we must all agree that the activities of your hopeless sisters has put the rest of you in unenviable positions.

as a youth corper, i saw Nigerian university graduates having sex on the bare field with recruits of the Nigerian army for a promise to influence their postings for primary assignments. so when next a security man or a cashier in a bank tries to make a pass at you in spite of your status, understand that its because someone like you had fallen for him because of his pay package so he is emboldened to try again

if you go to portharcourt or ever lived there, you will agree with me that the average portharcourt girl is considered stupid if she is dating a bank employee. this is because there is a preponderance of oil workers whose earning capacity dwarfs that of the banker.

so please banking is not the issue the issue is purchasing power, which women in Nigeria have reduced the relationship or sex factor to. enough of the banker/bankworker-battery, lets face facts

FOLAHANN,
I STAND WHERE U STAND, IF THERE ARE ONLY TWO THINGS I AM CERTAIN OF ABOUT THIS NATIONS CUP, IT IS THAT SUPER EAGLES WILL DEFEAT COTEVOIR ON THE OPENING DAY, AND THEN SECOND IS THAT GHANA BLACK STARS WILL NOT BE ON PARADE ON THE LAST DAY. ALL THIS PRE-TOUNAMENT NOISE IS THE NORMAL MEDIA HYPE.

AT THE END OF THE DAY, A TRADITIONAL NATIONS CUP COUNTRY WILL BE TAKING THE CUP- EGYPT , CAMEROUN, NIGERIA. I AM READY TO BET ON THIS. IN FOOTBALL THERE IS WHAT WE CALL PEDIGREE, AND NON OF THE SO CALLED FAVOURITES LIKE COTEVOIR AND GHANA, HAVE ENOUGH OF IT TO UPTURN THE APPLE CART- QUOTE ME.

U NEEDED TO SEE HOW GHANA STRUGGLED TO OVERCOME BENIN AT THE FOUR NATION TOURNAMENT AND HOW MALIAN EAGLES EFFORTLESSLY DOWNED THE ELEPHANTS IN PARIS IN A RECENT FRIENDLY TO UNDERSTAND THAT SUPER EAGLES IS NOT OUT OF THE BRACKET, ANYWAY, E NO TOO FAR, WE WILL GET THERE
Sports / Re: Super Eagles Squad At Ghana 2008: What To Expect? by sabak: 1:14pm On Dec 13, 2007
people, there is so much despondency and unbelief, lets look at it this way

for the first time since 1994, a super eagles team that isn't dependent on okocha is emerging
anyone who watched with a discerning mind, will notice in the past two friendlies, as unimpressive as the standard of play was, there was immense team spirit, every player on the pitch was struggling to cover up for the other. yes we have issues in the midfield, but we have materials to make find a solution without putting any player under pressure to be jay jay.

right now what anyone cant argue about, is that we have excess options upfield, some of the strikers who are also natural ball jugglers can be pulled back to play behind to front two.assuming martins and uche alternating with the yak play as the front two, and natural ball jugglers like kanu, utaka playing in between them and mikel roving around the center with osaze and obinna nsofor running down on the flanks.

if this combination in midfield and attack can click, it will make up for any problems we may have in the defence, anyway, the defence has never been the strong point of the Nigerian game even in the tick of things in 1994, we v always had a fragile back. but that is not to say that on a good day, ayila, yobo, taiwo and apam will not hold their own.

and these are the reasons why some of us who have heard vogts saying no problem in midfield and threatening fire and brimstone over his camp deadline feel the man has a clear idea of what he intend s to do.people who look at how the German has made fitness and consistency the watch words for his selection believe the materials are there, he just needs sometime in a closed camp setting to figure out the best combination. lets not forget that even the historic dream team 1 was beaten in a friendly match in the national stadium by 3-1 by a rag tag togole se tnational team, that was exactly 21 days before they took on bulgaria. even in the height of super eagles reign in 1994, they were almost beaten to it by an ivorien team built around four european based proffessionals and a bulk of asec mimosa and african sport players in the semis.

mali and cote voir may have the present super stars of the african game, but with the discipline, ruggedness and team work which are the hall marks of the feared and respected german soccer philosophy, the truth is that anything can happen, and writting off the super eagles will certainly be an excercise in self destruction for opponents.come january 2008, the die will be cast, and we will know whose game it is.

the point i am making to u is that some people who  have posts in this thread are bankers by all ramifications, whether in nigerian context, lingual context or industry context,  so ur ignorance couldnt let u see that before making a general aspersion in a manner  only uneducated and half baked upstarts can. superior knowledge humbles people, and ur outbursts here only serve to conclude that u have got none. pick ur manners when next u are contributing in a public arena

Mr Yankee banker, see how rudely you are attempting to correct people on an issue u know next to nothing about. pls let the half baked knowledge you have humble you.

for your information, a banker is an institution or a person who is certified by the recognised body for professional banking professionals in the country in which the institution or person is operating or practicing as the case may be.

needless to say that it has nothing to do with your level in the bank. in a properly regulated environment, certain positions in a bank can only be occupied by a banker(certified banking professionals) and in some cases, a certain lenght of experience is required. that is why you think that being an officer  and above automatically qualifies one to be a banker, which is wrong. it can only be right is the so called officer is certified by the regulating body  for banking professionals in the country of practice or has been certified by any other international  banking professional body that is recognised in the country in which he is practicing.

in the case of Nigeria, the recognised body for professional bankers is the chartered institute of bankers of Nigeria, and any one who is in practice and is an associate  member of the institute is a banker , irrespective of whether he is an assistant banking officer or an executive director, so be guided
