ANOTHER ONE HERE

The issue of Religious Bigotry did not start from the North the religion bigots from Southern Nigeria started long ago but we ignore them ‍♂

Let's go back to 1962, when a Northern Muslim, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa registered Nigeria as a member of the World Council of Churches and International Bible Society in 1963, no complain from the Muslim North. Saturday was a working day in Nigeria until 1973, Gowon, a Christian minority from the North declared it a work free day, to enable the Seventh Day Adventist Church to worship, no complain from the Muslim North.
In February 1979, Olusegun Obasanjo denied Ahmed Deedat, an Islamic Preacher, entry into Nigeria, no complain from the Muslim North.
In 1982 pope John Paul II was welcomed to Nigeria by a Muslim, Alhaji Shehu Shagari. Reinhart Bonke, a Christian Crusader, had a free enterance to Nigeria at will, no complain. Abacha welcomed Pope John Paul and established Papal Square along Kubwa express way, no complain from Muslims.
But in 1986 when Babangida registered Nigeria as a member of the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) there was a riot in Lagos, Portharcout, Enugu, orchestrated and organised by CAN.
Pls who are the Religious Bigots?
Just recently, the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs distanced itself from all kinds of politics, but what about CAN? In 2013, a Private Jet belonging to the CAN President was intercepted in South Africa loaded with foreign currency, imagine it belonged to the Sultan?
So, let's ask ourselves who are the Religious Bigots?

Copied!

Don't mind them, we Muslims got no time to complain or wail unlike them. We got excessive confidence but they are extremely insecure. How many times have you seen Sultan leader of Muslims complain of marginalization but their CAN president everyday complaining, crying. Even if we give them Christian president the complain will be worst.
When Jonathan was the president that was when they complained the most. The CAN president then Oritjefor was always crying everyday. grin

Matter of Conscience:*
1. Which region has been more tolerant of religious diversity in the joint-ticket elections in Nigeria?

2. Which faith has been more tolerant of grossly lopsided joint tickets in Nigeria?

3. Is the CAN justified to be crying wolf over join ticket permutations by political parties, given the undue advantages it had enjoyed over the years?

Say NO to CAN and the Pastors/GOs preaching religious hatred over 2023 elections.

BREAKING: Supreme Court upholds use of hijab in Lagos schools

By
Sodiq Oyeleke

The Supreme Court of Nigeria has granted the use of hijab by female Muslim students in Lagos State Government-owned schools.

The apex court delivered the ruling upholding the use of hijab by Muslim students on Friday in Abuja.

The court dismissed an appeal by the Lagos State Government and upheld the earlier judgement of the Court of Appeal which held that the ban on hijab was discriminatory against Muslim students in the state.

Justices on the panel were Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, Justice John Inyang Okoro, Justice Uwani Aji, Justice Mohammed Garba, Justice Tijjani Abubakar, and Justice Emmanuel Agim.

Wild jubilation greeted the verdict with the Amir (President) of the Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria, Lagos State Area Unit, Miftahudeen Thanni, and other members of the organisation seen shouting “God is great”.

The court upheld that the ban violated the Muslim students’ rights to freedom of thought, conscience, religion, the dignity of human persons and freedom from discrimination guaranteed by the 1999 Constitution.

Backstory

The Lagos State Government had banned the use of the hijab, arguing that it was not part of the approved school uniform for pupils.

Following the ban, the students filed the suit on May 27, 2015, seeking redress and asked the court to declare the ban as a violation of their rights to freedom of thought, religion and education.

The case, CA/L/135/15, is between Lagos State Government, Miss Asiyat AbdulKareem (through her father), Miss Moriam Oyeniyi and the Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria.

Lagos high court bans hijab in 2014

Justice Modupe Onyeabor of an Ikeja High Court had on October 17, 2014, dismissed the suit instituted against the Lagos State Government by two 12-year-old girls (at that time), who are members of the MSSN, Lagos State Area Unit.

In her judgment, Onyeabor held that the prohibition of the wearing of hijabs over school uniforms within and outside the premises of public schools was not discriminatory.

According to her, the ban did not violate Sections 38 and 42 of the 1999 Constitution as claimed by the plaintiffs.

Dissatisfied, the appellants urged the appellate cģourt to set aside the judgment and protect their constitutional rights.

Appeal court upholds use of hijab in 2016

A five-man special appellate court panel, presided by Justice A.B. Gumel, had on July 21, 2016, overruled the October 17, 2014 judgment of Justice Modupe Onyeabo of the Lagos State High Court in Ikeja, which banned the use of hijab in public primary and secondary schools in Lagos State.

While striking down Justice’s Onyeabo’s verdict, the Justice Gumel panel had held that the ban on hijab was discriminatory against Muslim pupils in the state.

The panel upheld the Muslim students’ contention that the ban violated their rights to freedom of thought, conscience, religion, dignity of human persons and freedom from discrimination guaranteed by the 1999 Constitution.

Justice Gumel also held that wearing the hijab was aģn Islamic injunction and an act of worship required of Muslims.

He said the use of hijab by Muslim pupils could not cause disunity, distraction and discrimination against students of other faiths as declared by the lower court judge.
Ģ

Resolving all the five issues raised in favour of the appellants, the appellate court held that the lower court erred in law when it held that the ban on hijabs was a policy of the Lagos State Government (respondent).

Other justices in the five-man panel were Justice M. Fasanmi, Justice A. Jauro, Justice J.S. Ikyegh and Justice I. Jombo Ofor.

Lagos govt loses again

The Lagos State Government had in February 2017 approached the Supreme Court to challenge the July 21, 2016 judgment of the Court of Appeal which reinstated the use of hijab by Muslim pupils in Lagos public primary and secondary schools.

This was after the state government sought to stay the execution of the judgment at the Lagos Division of the Court of Appeal but failed.

Lagos issues circular on hijab

In November 2018, the Lagos State Government issued a circular backing the use of the Hijab for Muslim female pupils in public schools.

The circular read, “Since the case of the use of Hijab in Lagos State is still pending in the Supreme court of Nigeria, status quo be maintained, to avoid contempt of the court, that is students be allowed to wear Hijabs on school uniforms but same must be short, smart, neat and in the same colour of the uniform (skirt).

“Furthermore, schools management are advised to downplay comments and disciplinary actions on the use of smart Hijabs until the final determination of the case by Supreme Court.

“No student should be discriminated against in any form on the basis of religion.

“All principals and teachers must be sensitized to comply accordingly. You are enjoined to adhere strictly to these recommendations.”

Muslim students assure LASG of moderacy, warn teachers

Reacting to the judgement, the Amir (President) of MSSN in Lagos State, Miftahudeen Thanni, said that with the judgement, students in public primary and secondary schools in Lagos State can now wear hijab to school without harassment.

He warned teachers and government officials against harassment of female Muslim students, urging that the Supreme Court judgement should put a stop to the “undue” punishment of students willing to wear the hijab.

Thanni, however, assured the state government and residents of peaceful co-existence, noting that Muslim students won’t abuse the judgement.

According to him, the judgement has deepened the students’ and Nigerians’ confidence in the judiciary.

He said, “We are a law-abiding organisation and we will continue to uphold the law of the land. We applaud the judgement. The position of the law is very clear on the subject matter. This matter once more assures us that all hope is not lost on having a modest society.

“The government should not be waging war against youths who chose to cover their unclothedness while encouraging those who walk naked and engage in illicit acts in public.

“It gladdens to see that the injunction which the LASG is using as a basis to deny the rights of Muslim students has been decided by the apex court.

“We hereby urge all stakeholders to be law-abiding for a peaceful implementation of the judgement. There should be no violation of human rights against our students while we expect an immediate implementation of the judgement in all schools across the state. We urge the government not to delay implementation.”

While congratulating and thanking Muslims and the legal team on the recent victory, Thanni said, “We congratulate the entire Muslim Ummah (community) and urge our Muslim students to uphold decency and cleanliness which are the hallmark of Islam while exercising their rights. We also pray to Allah to forgive the shortcomings of the late Alhaji Adetola Kassim (SAN) who started this case without collecting a dime from us.”

Hijab: How I suffered victimisation, rejection in public institutions - FOMWAN Amirah, Alhaja Rofiah Sanni (Part 1)

The newly appointed Amirah (President) Federation of Muslim Women Associations in Nigeria (FOMWAN), Alhaja Rofiah Idowu Sanni has revealed how she survived victimisation and rejections as a teacher for using Hijab in public schools throughout her 35-year teaching career.

Sanni, a retired Principal, who now wears niqob (veil) revealed that she was rejected twice in public schools because of her Hijab.

She made the revelation in an exclusive with Muslim News on Tuesday, few days after she emerged the 10th Amirah of the faith-based Muslim women organisation.

Narrating her ordeal as a young teacher some years ago, Alhaja Sanni said she was rejected in the first and second public school in Oyo State, adding that, "to avoid rejection in the third school I was posted to, I came up with a plan, which helped me overcome the incessant molestation for using Hijab."

According to her, "All glory and adoration are due to Allah. The most important thing in life is for people to know you for who you are. Before I started using niqob, everyone knows that no single person can toy with my Islam. Not only that, they know that I am also an advocate of Islam.

"The day I got my letter of assumption of duty, the first school I was posted to rejected me after seeing me on Hijab. That was in May, 1985. When I got to another school, I was rejected again.

"The irony is that I was to teach Physics and they were seriously in search of a Physics teacher, but just because of my mode of dressing, I was rejected."

Sanni while speaking on how she sailed through the hurdles, narrated, "When I realised that it was because of Hijab they didn't accept me, I came up with a plan when I was going to the third school. Sadly, the ministry didn't see anything wrong in their action.

"When I got to the third school, it's IMG Grammar School, Sharp Corner, Oke Ado, Ibadan, I removed my Hijab on getting to the gate. It wasn't convenient for me but I said to myself, I must get this appointment. The principal and the staff were so much happy that a physics teacher had been posted to their school. Immediately, they gave me letter of resumption of duty. I was given the timetable and in no time, everybody became my friend.

"I did same the second day by removing my Hijab at the gate. I did that for 4 days, Monday to Thursday. During the period, I made sure I didn't go late to school . As early as 6:30/7am, I was already in the school. That made the principal to like me specifically. In fact, I started assisting her children in thier physics assignment.

"On Friday of that week, I went to the school with Hijab. Then the Principal started shouting, saying what kind of dressing is this? Then, I pretended as if I am not Yoruba, because I had been speaking in English while in school. At the assembly ground, she was telling someone "Ni bo le ti ri Omo Alata yi", meaning, where did you see this uncultured lady? *is it alata? And, does that mean uncultured?*

"So, she finally confronted me, asking, what's wrong? I also asked her, what is wrong? I repeated everything she was saying.

"Why did you wear Hijab to the school today? Didn't you know it's not allowed?" She asked me, but I pretended I didn't understand what she was saying in Yoruba.

"When she couldn't bear it again, she called me to her office to challenge me again. Well, I changed the story for her. I told her, mummy, today is Friday, I will have to go to the mosque for Jum’at and my prayer will not be accepted without putting on Hijab. Then, she said, "okay, there is no problem. Just for Jum'at, right?"

"But on Monday, I used cape Hijab and she couldn't bear it again, despite the fact that I didn't use a big Hijab. That was the beginning of our quarrel. As we had this misunderstanding over Hijab, I didn't go late to school. I was dedicated to my work. In fact, I resuscitated the MSSN in the school and everything was going on well, not knowing that she had gone to the ministry and Teaching Service Commission to report me.

"But, Alhamdulillah, Alhaji Adekilekun from Ede, who was a board member of the commission sent for me. He related everything that happened and my principal's request to transfer me because of Islam, specifically my Hijab.

"I told him I don't want to be transferred, unless the woman is transferred. That place is even far away from my home, but because she has requested for my transfer, I will not leave. I left and went back to school.

"She called for a staff meeting and started spewing hate speeches. I stood up to the challenge. I told her it's because of Islam you hate me and I will not leave this school. As Allah will have it, few days later, she was demoted from Principal to VP for another reason, though I didn't want that for her. But because of her hatred for Islam, Allah disgraced her from that school.

"A few months after that, l requested for my transfer to a nearby school to my house, because l was heavily pregnant," she added.

Journey to Niqob

Alhaja Sanni, the wife of Alhaji Kunle Sanni, the Chairman of Oyo State Muslim Community, told Muslim News that she started using niqob when she became a principal.

"As a Principal, it wasn't easy for anybody to tell me not to use either the Hijab or Niqob," the New Amirah of FOMWAN said.

Alhaja Sanni however related the insult she got from a fellow Muslim for obeying Allah's command on dressing.

"There was a time a man from the Ministry came to my school before using niqob. He said, what's this nonsense you're putting on? I replied him, what is the nonsense? Unfortunately that man happens to be a Muslim.

"I told him don't come here to disgrace your fellow Muslim if you don't understand that it is an injunction from Allah for a mature female Muslim to cover herself by wearing the Hijab, whenever she is going outside her home.

"Putting on Hijab is what Allah asks us to do and that's what I am doing. The man later begged me after I reported the incident to NACOMYO. Before I knew it, the story had gone viral with people lambasting him and then, he came to beg me.

"So, when I started using niqob, the commissioner will come, other people in the education sector will come. I don't care whatever they say because I am doing it for Allah, not them. They will later turn everything to joke by saying 'Alhaja, we'll like to see your face.'

"Alhamdulillah Rabbil aalamin, we have niqob sisters teaching in our schools who also faced rejections initially, but were later transfered to schools like Isabatudeen and Ansarudeen," she added.
