I didn't see you and I didn't examine, but with the level of pain you described, the pulp of the tooth is most likely infected and if the tooth is filled, it is like sealing in the infection and it may worsen things.

Now, let me ask;

1. Is there pain on its own or only when you chew?

2. On a scale of 1-10 how bad will you rate the pain?

3. How long have you had the pain?

4. Any headache? Does it make that side of your face or jaw hurt?

5. Did you have a peri apical xray of the tooth taken at all?


Also, an extraction doesn't affect your chances of getting into the military.

A root canal therapy is the better option but you have seen that it's quite pricey and it's always better to crown the tooth after, which increases the overall cost.

Remember to stick to all post operative instructions given especially warm water and salt.

Also, protect your teeth,brush twice daily (morning and night) with a medium bristled toothbrush and a fluoridated toothpaste, change your toothbrush regularly, most brushes these days don't last up to 3 months before the edges fray, don't scrub too hard.

Also, see your Dentist regularly for check ups and early detection of any cavity, so your next thread won't be about how you removed a tooth and all your teeth are going bad

Your comments would have been pretty good and appreciated but you find ways to ruin it... My tooth ache wasn't caused by bad hygiene per se, but a crack I sustained on the tooth and ignored (probably got infected)

Early presentation would have saved you from a tooth extraction and the more you delay, the worse it will probably get. The gum may swell and pus or blood discharge will start and expensive anti biotics will be needed.

Boss, I went to a dental clinic and Root canal was ₦120,000 just like you said, sadly I can't spend such an amount on a tooth right now.
The tooth is cracked and they suggested that filling it might stop the pain but it's 50/50, meaning it's either the pain stops or the pain multiplies and extracting the tooth becomes a must.
I plan on filling it first, them pray the pain goes away... But if not then it's good bye to the tooth.

I've booked the appointment for next week, Any advice at all?

Go get ibuprofen (if you have it that side) and make sure its 400mg (that's the strongest concentration). If the pain is A1 that alone won't work. What I have found works for me no matter how serious the pain, is to go to maybe 3 pharmacies and ask for their strongest tablets then take each dosage together as one. That usually kills all pain no matter how severe. (do this at your own risk tho,, if you get yourself killed don't blame me)

Now, even when the pain stops for that hour or day, keep taking the medication at prescribed times. The kind of tablets that work on toothaches are called "anti-inflammatory", they reduce inflammation (swelling). If you know the structure of a tooth you know the outer part is rock hard (the enamel) while the inner part is a soft pulp. When you injure yourself, let's say your ankle, it will swell, that swelling distributes pain over a large surface diluting it. Now when you have a toothache it's usually the soft pulp at the center of the tooth that gets infected and then naturally swells to contain the pain, only problem is that it's encased inside the rock-hard enamel and becomes trapped trying to expand, creating enormous pressure which is the source that excruciating pain. So toothache painkillers are very specific by design and work not by combating pain directly, but by combating the swelling of the pulp. When the pulp contracts the pain alleviates. So when you take medication and it works keep taking it cause it needs to keep the pulp unable to expand and that can take time. If you wait for the pain to start you're too late the inflammation has begun. To combat it may take time. So take your pills regularly to prevent it in the first place.

I'm not a dentist or medical student, I may be wrong but this is what I understand.

And no matter what, NEVER TAKE A TOOTH OUT. Even back teeth. See if it can be saved and filled or something. Cause once you take it out, to replace it is costly and a removed tooth reshapes your cheeks, affecting your looks.

Guys normalize routine dentist visits even without toothaches to check of any developing problems. Brushing teeth ain't enough.

And yes, teeth are one of the most important things women check out in a man.

When I was young,I had a lot of teeth issues,I was about to have them removed by my parents till someone suggested a liquid drug called Clove oil...that was what I used and it was very effective in reducing the swell and the pain....
