Why Did Jesus Ask Simon Peter, "Do You Love Me" Three Times?

John 21:15-17 (KJV)

I'm sure Peter would have wondered what was actually going on when Jesus who knew him very well and that he had forsaking everything to follow Him, would still be asking him, "lovest thou me?" And not just once but three good times, because if anyone should know that Peter loved Him it should be Jesus Himself.

But Jesus very well knew what He was talking about because His sheep meant everything to Him. That's why He would lay down His life for them as a good Shepherd would.

So Jesus already knew that Peter loved Him,
but the question was not if Peter loved Him, but how much Peter loved Him. If Peter loved Him to the extent that he would take His sheep as He took them, and love and care for His sheep the way He did, because He had given His all for His sheep, and was going leave them in Peter's care, so it mattered a whole lot to Him that who He was going to leave His sheep with cared for His sheep as He would.

If Jesus could yet ask Peter who had proven his love for Him beyond any reasonable doubt, if He loved Him three times, I wonder how many times He would ask most of today's church leaders that same question. Because even the love Peter had for Jesus, most of them do not have, so how much more the love Jesus had for His sheep?

Moreover Jesus saying "feed my sheep" to Peter repeatedly on this occasion doesn't mean just giving them food or any kind of food, but the right kind of food, even that which the good Shepherd would feed them with if He were there with them - the kind of food that would lead to eternal life.

May God help us with leaders who would care for the sheep as Jesus did, and do everything they could to ensure that they're not lost to the enemy but preserved til the day the good Shepherd returns for His sheep. Amen!

Twas like Jesus saying, would you take the feeding of my sheep (seeking God's kingdom & his righteousness) more seriously than your source of livelihood (they were fishermen) & personal satisfaction- (what to eat, drink and wear)?
May God help us to labor and serve him acceptably

She told all sorts of lies just to make my friend leave his fiance for her. Went diabolical on the fiancé (but thank God for God), resorted to blackmails and threats... She would give my friend like 300 calls in two hours, same for his fiancé. So believe me when I say mad women exist and mental illness is real.

I believe you and the other brother who said I've chosen my path (lol) are into the teaching ministry.
An evangelist main focus for example is bringing in the lost (the lost is out there) via preaching, salvation, miracles, signs and wonders etc which usually draws the crowds eg philip the evangelist in Samaria, Reinhard Bonnie's ministry while some other ministry offices work on establishing them, teaching etc so we must note this too...
Next is to get them established afeer they come in via teaching sound doctrine. We mustn't get these all mixed up and condemn the work of other laborers... We can however admonish not with strive, hatred or envy but with the aim not to draw disciples unto ourselves but to christ.
Different administrations but the same Lord...
We must all play our part so the kingdom profits and like Apostle Paul said build according to pattern like wise Master builders and make them ready for the bridegroom

My brother did you see me exalt Quantity above Quality in my writings? I'm just opposed to the idealogy that small and pious looking means it's of God and large means God's not there.
That's how one woman-- my neighbor told me of a church she attended that was more like a witchcraft church. The pastor kept calling other churches worldly but was living In immorality with his secretary till she got pregnant. yet they act very piously, no earrings and all. Even after leaving she kept seeing the man in her dreams threatening her until God set her free after series of prayers and fasting.
It is well. Seems we are saying same thing in different ways. We must play our part and work with the holy spirit. I've served in many settings and capacities by the grace of God. Small churches, large churches, prison outreaches, hospital outreaches, rural evangelism, outreaches, UG fellowship, FCS meetings, Corpers fellowship, juvenile prison meetings etc. Rural areas in the far north, north east etc
Still currently work in the north...
I've seen people with different background but with a heart for God...
And those with a critical judgemental spirit sitting in Moses seat..
Baby Christians, carnal Christians, spiritual believers, religious Christians etc...
We accept everyone in love with a desire to win them as we play our part in love and trust God to have them come to the knowledge of the truth... GRACE and TRUTH must walk together if not we're no different from the pharisees.
GRACE without TRUTH will produce shallow believers like you've rightly said while TRUTH without GRACE will produce religious legalistic pharisee like people.

The parable of the sower is also worthy of note as we sow the seed of the word with diligence and the help of the spirit...
In that parable, the word produced in only 1/4 of the people who recieved it cos of the kind of heart they had...
Let's says you have a population of 40 persons, that's like 10 out of 40. We must trust God for more grace in our stewardship so as to bring more profit to God's kingdom

I agree Quality and Quantity must match for it to be acceptable. We need good balance.
Jesus had the 1 beloved, the 3, the 12, the 70 the 120 and the multitude. At pentecost, we see 3000 saved in a day at the coming of the holy spirit and many more added daily to the church. These were the ones who went everywhere preaching the word when persecution began and they became scattered but like we've established , Discipleship usually thins out the crowd.
Some folks think they're right cos they're scanty, an extreme view. Others are at the other extreme think crowd mean approval... We must have a balanced approach... and make sure we are doing the will of God.
Jesus says to go into ALL the world and make disciples of All NATIONS...
Hence we should build capacity to match both Quantity and Quality.
We should also know that a kingdom divided against itself would not stand hence we should stand together in the place of prayers, love and kingdom labor

You seem to be getting offended already. The reason for my replies is not to prove anything but just to emphasize that though we are many, we are one body in christ. By the mercies of God, our heart desire is for all to be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth.
At a point Elijah thought he was the only one right with God but God told him he had 7000 righteous men. How often do we think like that.

My brother I'm not placing number over quality, which one is path I have a chosen again? Lol. Every true believer knows that the crowd thins out as we approach the cross - the place of self denial and death to self. U should understand the point I was trying to make. The post talked about the crowd in church and you replied talking about narrow is the way and my point was saying that the fact that the church had a crowd doesn't mean it's false. I'm sure you mean ministers should do better in terms of discipleship, I feel so too, we should do better. There's always a place where the crowd thins out and the wheat is seperated from the tares. Jesus said trying to do this before time would make one root out the wheat too. Jesus also talked about a man casting the net into the sea and catching all manner of fishes before sorting them out. You should know this. Pastors and believers have to take responsibility to properly teach and disciple people and set the right example but we should be careful not to make hasty conclusions....
Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts: and then shall every man have praise of God.

I gave instances of barren women that gave birth to one in a million children. The problem is that the church today seem to lack the mindset of God where quality supersedes numbers, that's why we're busy gathering thrash up and down and not quality like the church Christ built. Jesus gathered multitude but you should be able to figure out the difference between the multitude and His church.

Many are called but few are chosen. The many called are the multitude but the chosen few are His church that's why He spoke to them in parables at some point but revealed the meaning of the parable to His church. Many who were also called of His disciples left Him but the few chosen which is His church stayed. The point is that quality should come before numbers.

The gospel Jesus asked us to preach is the Word of the Spirit which He preached that made many of His disciples to turn their backs on Him, so the same result is expected if the Word He preached is preached. It would produce quality first before numbers. That's the only way we could be able to produce a church of similar quality to that which Jesus built.

Sir, you have to understand that there are different kinds of ministries, different operations but the same spirit. There Apostles, prophets, teachers, helps etc & every one is given grace according to the measure of God's gift in him to profit the kingdom of God. that's why we must endeavor to play our part... Bible says he who is gifted in teaching should teach according to the measure of Grace God has given to them...
