Senate President, Bukola Saraki, Tuesday, unveiled the 21 names on the list of nominees sent by President Muhammadu Buhari for ministerial screening, the much anticipated list came without the expected compendium of “saints or angels” penned down as reasons for the protracted delay of over 4 months. Buhari had assured Nigerians during his inauguration speech that he would only appoint competent Nigerians as Ministers, perceived as the fallout from his anti-corrupt “body language.” Alas 21 names were reeled out with a lot of deflation which left much to be desired as to if it is really a ministerial list or a mere compensation list, as it comprises mainly people who played a pivotal role in his emergence as President. Prominent amongst the names are his Campaign Director during the elections, Rotimi Amaechi; former Governor, Kayode Fayemi his Chief Strategist during the elections; Lai Mohammed, the National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, APC; and others including Babatunde Fashola, former Lagos Governor; Ogbonaya Onu, former ANPP Chairman from Abia and Audu Ogbeh, former PDP chairman from Benue. Embattled former Rivers Governor, Amaechi has been linked with fiscal recklessness and dictatorial policies which led Rivers into a backward slide responsible for the financial woes of the once vibrant State. His nomination has now been interpreted as an endorsement of corruption and impunity by the Buhari-led administration. Buhari in submitting the list of his “Noise-makers” foot dragged and reluctantly fulfilled his duty of submitting the names before the end of September, as the Senate President merely confirmed receipt of the list in the wee hours of Wednesday, September 30. Fashola has also been dragged to the Economic and Financial Crimes commission, EFCC, by the Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders, CACOL, over the non-disclosure of final records detailing how he spent $200m from World Bank education funds, spending N78m on his personal website, spending 139m on two bore holes and the construction of the 1.36km Lekki-Ikoyi link bridge built for N25bn which reportedly cost only N6bn. Audu Ogbeh was a onetime Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, the same party the APC accused of “ruining Nigeria” over a 16 year period. It must be noted that the Ministers fact that the list has been read does not mean they will start work soon. In fact, it is not certain when the Federal Executive Council, FEC, will become functiona |
The Senate President Bukola Saraki has finally unveiled the much awaited ministerial list submitted by President Muhammadu Buhari for screening. Notable amongst the names are; Abubakar Malami, (former Legal Adviser, Congress for Progressive Change), Abdulrahman Dambazzau (former Chief of Army Staff), Lai Mohammed, former Lagos Governor, Raji Fashola, Adebayo Shittu, Sunday Lalong, Chris Ngige (former Anambra Governor), Rotimi Amaechi (former Rivers Governor). Other names on the list are Audu Ogbe, Kayode Fayemi (former Ekiti Governor) Emmanuel Kachiku, Sulaiman Adamu, Ibrahim Usman, Udoma Udoma and Ibrahim Jibril, Ahmed Musa Ibeto, Aishat Alhassan. A source has disclosed the particular portfolios for the Ministers, while coming to the defence of controversial names in the reckoning including Amaechi, Fashola and Mohammed. Although our highly placed source could not tell Post Nigeria what qualifies the embattled ex-Governor for the position, he said he was a worthy addition. Amaechi has accompanied the President on all defence minded visits abroad, gauging the perception of representatives of foreign governments on how we can solve our security issues, including kidnappings. President Muhammadu Buhari has affirmed he cannot be stopped from becoming the Minister of Petroleum Resources, tagging his critics mere “briefcase-carrying crooks” seeking to stampede him with various constitutional technicalities. The President also went on and insisted he possesses the requisite expertise and qualifications to steer the nation’s oil and gas sector to glory. He spoke through his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu during an interview with Punch Newspaper and maintained that no part of the law had been contravened by his decision boasting that he alone is able to clean the rot in the sector. “The President has a lot of experience to bring to the oil industry. Besides the military, the oil industry is another area where he is knowledgeable. “Mr. President also has tremendous integrity which he is bringing to the sector which is the most rotten in the nation’s economy. “The criticisms are coming from deal makers and briefcase-carrying cooks because they know that Buhari is not a deal maker. “The deal makers are not ready to go down without shouting because they know that their days are over.” Buhari almost 73, informed journalist at the sidelines of the 70th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, UNGA, in New York of his decision to play the role of the Minister of Petroleum, one of the most powerful and controversial posts in the presidential cabinet. Reacting to the “briefcase-carrying crooks”, Buhari insisted that no part of the constitution prohibits him from holding another executive office, stating that all the powers of the executive arm of government reside in the President. “The President personifies the Executive. Following the bomb blast that rocked Nyanya (a 7 minute drive to Asokoro, President Muhammadu Buhari’s official residence), Nigerians have verbally attacked the President for allowing rag-tag insurgents surge back into the nation’s capital, Abuja. Several bomb blasts ripped through Nyanya and Kuje, including one target hit twice before by Boko Haram, after separate strikes in the N/East that killed at least 21. The blasts left scores dead and many severely injured. In reaction, Nigerians took to social media platforms accusing Buhari who during his campaign promised that “with a snap of the finger” he would rout out the insurgents without significant process in the war against Boko Haram. "In case you think Nyanya is a fringe town, it's about 7mins(without traffic) from Asokoro and in the same LG as Garki, Wuse, Maitama. #AMAC “It very funny how sentimental Nigerians are”@kelvinmemo: Even punch news called Nyanya a suburb…” At as press time, a source said described Buhari’s inability to condemn the blast as the “mockery of the dead and injured.” He added: “they said, that Jonathan then did not care after Nyanya blast, now it has happened again, where is the ‘baba go slow’ that cares. Former President Goodluck Jonathan cancelled his scheduled trip to Ibadan, due to a deadly bomb blast that rocked Nyanya on the morning of April 14, 2014. Jonathan also condemned the attacks and ordered a beef up of the security within the Abuja Metropolis. The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has declared that the fight against insurgency in the N/East has suffered serious setbacks under the Buhari administration. The Abuja blast came barely 72 hours after PDP Spokesman, Olisa Metuh in a statement said that no significant investment hadbeen made by the APC led administration in terms of military training and the purchase of needed equipment. According to Metuh: “Whereas, we have in the past stated our support for efforts towards the fight against insurgency, we wish to register our deep concern regarding the clear show of unseriousness on the part of the present administration in tackling this problem and bringing succour to affected persons. “It is depressing to note that apart from the efforts by the Goodluck Jonathan-led PDP administration in training, military hardware and fortifying the country’s military before leaving office in May, no tangible investment has been made by the present administration in that direction due to its apparent lack of focus. “The fallout is the resurgence of terrorists who were, before the May 29th handover date, already pushed to the verge of surrender in the Sambisa forest. “But for the resilience of our military, who have effectively applied the equipment and training sourced under the watch of the PDP government, insurgents would have taken greater hold of our nation by now.” Reacting through a terse text message, the APC spokesman, Lai Mohammed described the PDP claim as nothing more than a partisan outburst. http://www.post-nigeria.com/abuja-blasts-nigerians-mourn-as-buhari-supporters-remain-unremorseful/ |
Barely days after Pope Francis made a first visit to the United States of America, USA, where he addressed Congress reminding America’s legislators of their pivotal role in preserving and protecting human life, the Senate went ahead to reject literally everything he said as they voted down the defund Planned Parenthood bill. The bill is meant to withhold funds promoting abortion and contraceptives in USA. Abortion giant Planned Parenthood has been a recipient of federal funding via Medicaid reimbursements, among other sources. The issue is now before Congress because of the emergence of undercover videos revealing how Planned Parenthood executives illegally haggle over fetal body parts, as well as use illegal partial birth abortion procedures to secure intact organs leading to increased calls for Congress to finally stop funding for the organisation. The grandson of Planned Parenthood founder Margaret Sanger, Alexander has spoken out against the pro-life comments Pope Francis made during his visit. “Despite Pope Francis’ progressive stance on climate change and economic equity, he has taken a back seat when it comes to reproductive health and women’s rights. “The Pope and the Catholic Church must acknowledge the fact that 99 percent of Catholic women use contraception and have abortions at the same rate as other women. His pursuit to stifle contraception access reduces women to basic purveyors of biological materials and denies them the right to plan their own families,” he added This decision to continue funding Planned Parenthood is now interpreted to mean a reaction to the Pope’s calls for the preservation of life by many. Others have said this decision which was initiated by Republicans aimed at refusing to heed to the Pope’s calls, reflects a rather two faced personalities since they welcomed him with open hands and then rejected everything he stood for when they voted down the bill. Reacting to how the Republicans “outsmarted the Pope,” Reverend Franklin Graham took to his Facebook page to condemn the action and tagged the Senators as "...http://www.post-nigeria.com/us-congress-delivers-snub-to-pope-francis/” |
The callousness of the Presidency came to bear on October 3, Saturday morning when the Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina posted a picture of President Muhammadu Buhari with President Barrack Obama of the United States of America, on his Facebook account hours after several bomb blasts rocked the capital city,Abuja leaving many dead. Barely 20 hours after the bombing incident, Buhari who repeatedly claimed to be fighting insurgency to a standstill had neither issued a press statement to condole the victims nor visited the various hospitals where the survivors are passing through excruciating pains. desina has already been attacked for such ineptitude by many who many say he did not care about the lives of people with his posted picture accompanied by; “President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama greet His Excellency Muhammadu Buhari, The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and Ms. Aisha Muhammadu-Buhari during the United Nations General Assembly reception at the New York Palace Hotel in New York, N.Y., Sept. 28, 2015. With growing advocacy for the rescue of the abducted Chibok girls by the #BringBackOurGirls Group, the Nigerian Military has cautioned against mounting excessive and political pressure, begging for more time in the ongoing counter insurgency operations. The army also warned against judging the military’s operation only by the rescue of the over 200 abducted girls, via the Acting Director, Defense Information, Military Headquarters, Rabe Abubakar, at a press conference in Lagos, adding that while it was of utmost concern to the military to rescue the girls, the operation required adequate patience and planning. “The issue of the low morale of the Nigerian military men has now become a thing of the past. The operation to recover the Chibok girls is alive and still ongoing. We have continued to make rescue efforts, and we will do all within our powers to bring the girls. “However, we will not rush to do this. It requires diligent intervention and a high-level operation to rescue the girls. In due time, every captive of Boko Haram will be released. A lot of achievements have been recorded recently, and this cannot be disconnected from the high morale of the army. “We want to assure our citizens that soon, insurgency will be a thing of the past. But, it is not only about the military or the North-Eastern region. It is our collective duty to ensure that there is peace in the country. “The Nigerian army has put together a multilateral cooperation. Niger, Nigeria, Chad and Cameroon are partnering to ensure we win the terrorism war.” The #BringBackOurGirls group lamented the growing silence on the rescue of the Chibok girls and called on President Muhammadu Buhari to make a strong statement concerning them, adding that without a declaration for the rescue of the girls, the aim of getting the girls back might not be achieved. The All Progressives Congress, APC, has called on Nigerians to disregard names being bandied about in the media as supposed Ministers as the Senate resumes plenary on Tuesday, October 6, after its Independence Anniversary recess. The National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Lai Mohammed, said whatever names currently published in the media, no matter how authoritative, were nothing but mere speculation and should not be accepted as the names sent by President Muhammadu Buhari to the Senate. The ministerial list was handed over to Senate President Bukola Saraki by Chief of Staff Abba Kyari and, Special Adviser to the President on National Assembly Matters (Senate), Ita Enang on Wednesday, September 30, after the senate plenary session. In reaction, Lai Mohammed said: “Unfortunately, the Senate is yet to read the list, so whatever you read anywhere is mere speculation. “Not until the Senate President reads out the list on Tuesday, it will be too premature for anybody to start making a comment on who and who is on the list. “But from what I take from what the President said during his independence broadcast, people think there has been undue delay but he explained that the delay was due to the fact that there were no proper handover notes and that the transition committee was not helped much because the transition committee did not receive the handover notes until about four days to the handover.” See more: http://www.post-nigeria.com/apc-disowns-amaechi-fashola-others-as-ministers/ |
A coalition of youths under the umbrella of the Patriotic Nigerian Youth Guild has revealed a clandestine plan by the leader of the All Progressives congress, APC, Ahmed Tinubu and the Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT, Danladi Umar to ensure that the Senate President, Bukola Saraki is removed from office. The group in an advertorial published Tuesday 29, in Daily Trust Newspaper, titled “Why is Tinubu after Saraki?” alluded to a statement attributed to Tinubu where he suggested that the Federal Government cannot overlook Saraki’s trial. The advertorial signed by Olusegun Olusoga and 5 other members accused Tinubu of masterminding the ongoing legal battle between the CCT and Saraki as well as the recent investigation instigated by the Economic and Financial Crimes commission, EFCC, against his wife, Toyin Saraki. The statement reads in part: “Asiwaju Tinubu surprised us with his present position because we think a politician of his caliber, pedigree and experience should be able to rise above partisanship, pettiness and back-biting. “He should maintain his stand for and continue to defend certain principles, no matter the circumstances. These principles include strict compliance with due process, adherence to rule of law and the need to give justice to all concerned in any matter. “Saraki has maintained that the charges against him were filed against the provision of section 3(d) of the law establishing the code of conduct Bureau and Tribunal. He has raised the issue of witch-hunting, persecution and victimization. “Asiwaju is the only APC leader who has openly made a statement justifying the plan to destroy a fellow party leader. The TVC owned by him was the only one that eagerly aired the live coverage of the trial of Saraki on the day it commenced. “Similarly, the Nation Newspaper owned by Asiwaju as well as Punch newspaper where he wields a lot of influence devote significant number of pages every day to run down Saraki” “The question is that if Tinubu could...http://www.post-nigeria.com/tinubu-and-danladis-plan-to-remove-saraki-revealed/ |
Social critic and public commentator, Bishop Mathew Hassan Kukah of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto has counseled Nigerians to hold back from believing President Muhammadu Buhari is the “anointed messiah,” warning that his previous attempt at fighting corruption during the military era eventually led to him “losing his job.” Kukah expressed this pessimism while speaking as a guest during the Independence Anniversary programme The Platform on the topic “Nigeria: Euphoria, Hysteria and Dementia, Still a long walk to freedom,” at the Covenant Christian Centre in Iganmu Lagos. “I believe Buhari is not a new kid on the block, he’s been there before. He fought corruption and lost his job, nobody protested in support of General Buhari for losing his job for fighting corruption back then. “Corruption is celebrated in Nigeria because most people who steal claim to do it for a righteous cause. “It is all right that we are celebrating Buhari, and we must celebrate him but I think Buhari must also know and I believe he knows that we cannot fold our arms and hope that a nation that is so intellectually lazy, simply wishes for a messiah. “An intellectually lazy man looks up to a Messiah they don’t know what he looks like to rescue them. We are looking for facilitators and we not looking for leaders and most of us are better than those who have been our leaders.” Kukah also dispelled insinuations that getting an honest leader could serve as a prerequisite for Nigerian development regardless of weak institutions. He added that there have never been any established relationships between human goodness and capacity to deliver on good governance. “I think the critical mistake we are making is that we think that governing Nigeria is about good men and good women or it is about hold men and holy women. “There isn’t a direct correlation between human goodness and capacity to govern, in Nigeria we should not be talking about leaders. You cannot lead except you have something to be looked at, which can be followed in a form of a text.” Read more from his speech: http://www.post-nigeria.com/buhari-can-be-impeached-for-fighting-corruption-bishop-kukah/ |
The All Progressives Congress, APC, on Wednesday, September 23, revealed that the the party’s position on the on-going trial of Senate President Bukola Saraki by the Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT, will still remain a secret that would not be divulged to the public. The National Publicity Secretary of the party, Alhaji Lai Mohammed told Business Day in a telephone chat that whatever position the party was going to take on the prosecution of the Senate President would remain deliberately concealed. Saraki is facing a 13 count charge for false declaration of assets. See: I’m ready to face the “Incompetent” tribunal – Saraki He is also answering questions on illegal operation of foreign accounts while being a public officer as a Governor and Senator. Saraki is accused of according to the charge, violating sections of the Fifth Schedule of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, as amended. On Tuesday September 22, Saraki told the Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal, Danladi Umar that he was aware he was being targeted simply because he was Senate President before adding Section 3(d) of the Code of Conduct Act had already vindicated him. While responding, Mohammed insisted “Whatever is going to be our position (on Saraki’s trial) will not be made public.” When asked what he feels the ongoing trial of Saraki portends for the image of the party, lai Mohammed said: http://www.post-nigeria.com/sarakis-trial-part-of-apc-secret-agenda-lai-mohammed/ |
Eye witness reports have put in focus the non-transparent nature of the Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, especially towards the conduct of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Bayelsa State Governorship primaries and the violence that erupted during the selection process. According to the Nation Newspaper , Oshiomhole who was also the Chairman of the seven-man electoral committee arrived at the Samson Siasa Stadium in Yenegoa almost at the same time with one of the top contenders, Timipre Sylva at 1pm as against 10am accreditation time and this prompted the youth at the venue to go on rampage. Amongst the contestants were former Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, Timi Alaibe, former Member of the House of Representatives, Warman Ogoriba; former Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Chairman, Sam Inokoba; former state Housing Commissioner, Austin Ogiowon; former Commissioner for Local Government, Godknows Powell and former Chief of Staff to the State Governor, Seriake Dickson, Dikivie Ikhiogha. Other contestants were former Chairman of Ekeremor Local Government Council, Christopher Enai and ex-Senator representing Bayelsa East senatorial district, Clever Ikhisikpo. Before the election, it was reported that some delegates had reportedly gone into hiding following alleged threats by some chieftains of the party, rooting for a particular candidate. An influential member of the party had threatened delegates not to allow a newcomer like Timi Alaibe to reach out to them for votes. Alaibe with several others recently jumped ship from the PDP to the APC. The rowdiness of the event was blamed on Oshiomhole, who arrived at 1 pm. His convoy arrived in the midst of the confusion, two minutes after one of the top contenders and Sylva arrived. Oshiomhole intervened and held a meeting with members of his committee. Before his arrival, Alaibe, with Prince Preye Aganaba and Ebitimi Amgbare, called for the cancellation of the primary according to the Nation. Thugs were also seen hurling stones at delegates who lined up to be screened for the exercise creating chaos and panic in the area. The unruly crowd attacked the delegates and sent them running for their lives. Most of the delegates especially persons said to be loyal to Alaibe could not return to the venue. Oshiomhole was whisked away from the venue of the election by his security operatives and did not return. Amidst the on-going trial of Senate President Bukola Saraki by the Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT, over an alleged 13 count-charge bordering on false asset declaration, the de facto Leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Bola Ahmed Tinubu has said the former Kwara Governor is getting what he deserves. Tinubu who spoke through the Chairman of Nation Newspaper Editorial Board, Sam Omatseye on Tuesday as an invited guest on a Channels Television Programme explained that the ram (Saraki) has come to the slaughter before adding with some mirth; “we want to know if the meat is rotten inside.’’ The CCT on Friday and Monday again issued a bench warrant against Saraki following his refusal to appear in court to face trial. Responding to the question that the Saraki charges might be “pure witch hunting” because he could not be the only public official that might have declared false assets, Tinubu said in every democracy, not every sinner would be caught. “For political pundits, this is an interesting time to be alive. We want to know what the meat is, we want to know whether the ram has meat, the meat has to come to the slaughter slab, and he is running away from the slaughter slab, so how would we know if the meat is rotten inside? Following allegation that millions of Naira have been spent on his golden stool, Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike has come out to deny the allegations, insisting that his administration will remain unperturbed and focused on delivering the dividends of democracy to the people. Wike has been accused of spending more than N3 million on every golden chair being used, especially for special occasions and government functions. Reacting to this allegation, Simeon Nwakaudu the media aide to Wike in an exclusive interview with POST NIGERIA maintained that the Governor does not spend such an amount on his chairs, adding that the allegations were only peddled to tarnish Wike’s image. “What is golden stool, there is nothing like that, what type of question is that, no no no, do you know what gold stool is? There is nothing like that.” Nwakaudu visibly angry stated that he would not entertain any more questions and abruptly ended the conversation. When POST NIGERIA contacted a member of the All Progressives Congress, APC, media team, he claimed on the condition of anonymity, that the Governor has budgeted millions of Naira for more golden stools to be imported into Nigeria as he has decided to only seat on them during public occasions. “He has even budgeted and paid for millions of golden and customized chairs to be imported into the country, that’s the information we have now. “The man has told his personal assistants to always make sure he seats on unique and customized stools and this is surprising because we are talking about cutting cost and he is going ahead to spend more than N3 million for... see more: http://www.post-nigeria.com/king-wike-denies-spending-millions-on-stools/ |
Wife of the President, Aisha Buhari has taken full control of all the apparatus in the office of the First Lady as operated by her predecessor Dame Patience Jonathan, located in the Presidential Villa, despite President Muhammadu Buhari and the All Progressives Congress, APC, promising the opposite during the presidential election. A top official working in the “Office of the First Lady” spoke exclusively to POST NIGERIA on the condition of anonymity and confessed to the fact that the APC only used the scrapping of the office to lure Nigerians into favourably voting for the party. The source also hinted that Mrs. Buhari’s roles and responsibilities had not changed since her predecessor vacated the scene as she only dropped the title “First Lady” as a smokescreen. “Officially she is the First Lady, there must be an Office of the First Lady; they were just being hypocritical by not telling Nigerians when they were campaigning. “The Office of the First Lady is useless because she should rather be working in partnership with whoever is going to be the Minister of Women Affairs. “They should cancel it and whatever she wants to do for women or youth, they should just work together with the women affairs by putting more money by expanding the women affairs ministry and forming more parastatals to handle more issues instead of this jamboree.” Ahead of the March 28th election, Buhari and the APC as part of their campaign promises told Nigerians that there would be no office of the first lady should they emerge victorious in the election. This was a selling point during the “Change campaign” that ushered in Buhari’s administration. “The office of the first lady is not in the constitution, so there’s no official role for them,” these were Buhari’s exact words prior to the general election. Senate President Bukola Saraki has resolved to appear before the Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT, at its next seating slated for Tuesday 22nd September, after the Court of Appeal dismissed the ex-parte application seeking to set aside the order made on Friday by the CCT asking for his arrest. Saraki’s lawyer had defended his absence during Mondays seating, sighting “technicalities, incompetence and lack of quorum” of the CCT. In a statement issued by Saraki’s media team, he stated that his decision to seek protection from other superior courts was a reflection of his confidence in the nations judiciary. “The Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki will appear before the Code of Conduct Tribunal tomorrow Tuesday 22nd of September 2015. While the Senate President Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, had stated and maintained that he is ready to submit himself to due process of the law on any issue concerning him, he also believes that he has an inalienable right to resort to the same judiciary for protection when he feels his fundamental rights are about to be infringed upon. “The Senate President is a law abiding citizen and his absence from tribunal was based on legal advice he received from his counsel that it is not necessary for him to appear before the tribunal at this stage since the jurisdiction of the tribunal and the process of initiating the matter are being challenged before the federal High Court Abuja. With dust from the Senate President, Bukola Saraki’s saga yet to settle, both the All Progressives Congress, APC, and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, have continued to exchange attacks over the bench warrant issued by the Code of Conduct tribunal, CCT. In what seemed to be an initial condemnation over CCT calls for Saraki’s arrest, the PDP on Saturday accused President Muhammadu Buhari of “deliberate infractions and crass abuse of power” and warned that the “nation is on a quick slide into fascism and official terrorism”. The PDP also added that the “relentless onslaught against democratic institutions” was totally condemnable and a ”disdain to the independence of the legislature and the principle of separation of powers.” In swift reaction, the APC through its Publicity Secretary, Lai Mohammed labelled his counterpart Olisa Metuh as “ethically challenged,” insisting that the PDP was only out to distract the ongoing efforts of Buhari’s Administration towards eradicating age long impunity and corruption, and therefore warned that the opposition party will fail in their efforts. ”For the ethically-challenged Spokesman of the same morally-deficient party to continue to spew trash under the guise of opposition politics is totally provocative and absolutely unacceptable. The issuance of a bench warrant of arrest by the Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT, on Friday against Senate President Bukola Saraki has polarized the All Progressives Congress, APC, as President Muhammadu Buhari has maintained silence over the debacle. The Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Timi Frank, in an open letter to the President on Saturday, September 19 titled “Urgent Need to End This Impunity against Saraki” published by Nation called on Buhari to intervene in the Saraki episode so that the crisis will not consume the APC. Timi added that a former Governor from the S/West (Ahmed Bola Tinubu) was still “enjoying his booty being part of the current government.” He called on Saraki’s detractors to sheathe their sword and allow him to deliver on the change mantra he earlier promised Nigeria. The Statement reads in part: “Mr President, it is worthy to note that Saraki in recent times has been treated as an outcast. This is very bad development which if not carefully managed will consume the All Progressives Congress and doom our democracy. What has happened unfortunately does not reflect the change we promised Nigerians. “Is Senator Saraki the only Former governor in Nigeria? Are there no other former governors especially from the South West and other zones that are not just enjoying their booty but are integral part of the government? Yes, Saraki is not the anointed candidate for the senate presidency, but his colleagues elected him. So, why don’t we allow him some peace to deliver on the promises of change? “Mr President, the executive needs the legislature; hence, the relationship must be cordial because if this situation is not properly managed, Nigerians will be disappointed in us as a party, a development that portends unfavorable results when we go to the polls in 2019. “As far as Nigerians are concerned, it is very difficult to convince them that this orchestrated onslaught against Saraki is not a case of witch hunt. Nigerians are more politically aware now than ever. See more of the statement: http://www.post-nigeria.com/apc-blasts-buhari-tinubu-over-saraki/ |
Former Senate Leader, Victor Ndoma-Egba, a three time Senator, has formally quit his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, after passing through hostile and unreceptive persecution from the party which left him deserted from its political space. This culminated in his defeat during the party’s senatorial election primaries in December 2014. Ndoma-Egba in his resignation letter, signed and addressed to the PDP Chairman in his Akparabong Ward of Ikom Local Government Area of Cross River State, cited unresolved conflicts and a fall out with the party, which no longer reflects his new found political and ideological beliefs. “I returned to politics to pursue certain ideals and values, to contribute towards strengthening democracy, to give a voice to my people, a people who have been most kind and generous to me. “Before, the PDP was strong in Cross River State because it offered members an atmosphere and opportunity for self expression within its confines. “Today, those values that underline democracy have totally become strange to the party. I, therefore, resign my membership of the PDP forthwith and urge you to take the necessary steps to reflect this on your records,” he said. The defection comes as no surprise to political observers as his supporters had already predicted an exit after neglect from the PDP in the past 3 years. This is due to unresolved differences with party members in Cross Rivers who were determined to isolate him from the decision making processes in the party and diminish his political influence. The All Progressives Congress, APC, has put its weight behind embattled Senate President, Bukola Saraki, clearing him of any corrupt practices and insisting that the alleged corrupt practices levied against him are plots by his political enemies determined to tarnish his image. A chieftain of the party in Sokoto State, Abdullahi Sarkin-Gobir Adiya made this declaration during an interview with ThisDay Newspaper, where he confirmed that Saraki is free from any corrupt practices and insisted that Nigerians are satisfied with his leadership style and qualities. “Where are the evidences against Saraki? Let his detractors tender the evidence to Nigerians. I don’t think Saraki is a corrupt leader. he de facto National leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Ahmed Bola Tinubu has said the mediocrity of former President Goodluck Jonathan made few of his outstanding cabinet members to perform below expectations and suffer unjustly. Tinubu who stated this in an editorial published in the Nation Newspaper of September 15, 2015 with the title “living in denial” maintained that Jonathan ran a cabinet of technically sound men with woeful performances. Jonathan on September 7, 2015 praised the former Minister of Agriculture, Akinwumi Adesina and Former Director–General of the Stock Exchange Arunma Oteh for their new roles on the international scene. “Given your (Adesina) exemplary record of performance, while serving as the minister of Agriculture and Rural Development in my cabinet, I have no doubt that you will deploy your energy and the bank’s resources to ensure that Africa experiences a new era of accelerated development,” Jonathan wrote. The former President, in a letter to Oteh, praised the former SEC Chief’s profound knowledge of capital markets, describing her as conversant with the challenges of the economies of emerging markets. Akinwunmi, who was Jonathan’s Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, has just assumed duty as the President of the AfDB while Oteh, who was the Director-general of the Securities and Exchange Commission, was appointed as the Treasurer and Vice President of the World Bank. As President Muhammadu Buhari puts finishing touches to his list ministerial nominees to form his cabinet, one name which has not left the public glare seems to be that of the Co-founder of the #BringBackOurGirls group, Dr. Oby Ezekwesili, prompting insinuations that her ministerial ambition may seem to have overtaken the campaign to bring back the Chibok girls. Joseph Edgar in a piece titled “Oby Ezekwezili, Her Barber, the Chibok Girls and Tales by Moonlight” published in THISDAY Newspaper he explained how the #BringBackOurGirls campaign has lost its hightened attentions and why the attention has suddenly shifted towards making its campaigner Ezekwesili a favorite in Buhari’s search for an incorruptible and selfless personality to work with. “Suddenly the music has stopped. Immediately we achieved a peaceful transition from the last administration our heroine has suddenly gone quiet or is it me, have we found the girls or am I missing something? “When the hashtag campaign hit, I was on top of myself. All sort of international figures from the U.S. President, to his wife down to international looneys like Kim Kardashian all joined the campaign and this was Oby’s finest hour. I could almost imagine her on her favorite barbers chair getting her world famous low cut in shape and smiling to herself with pride that she has led a movement that has not only gained international attention but has also kept her in the spotlight and positioned her for recognition and maybe a Nobel Peace pric But alas, with the swearing in of the Buhari administration, she has gone quiet. The fire has been extinguished and madam has gone back to the barber shop with really no plans to continue the fight. She has gone quiet and this has led me to ask various bitter questions. Was this an elaborate scam on her part to gain relevance, to use as a platform to push for recognition at the expense of the poor girls who have continued to suffer untold hardships and torture at the hands of these sons of satan. “Oby and her fellow travelers have only succeeded in dancing naked at the village square, a sight I’d rather not watch. She has showed us her true colours, that the Chibok girls were not really her interest, she has shown us that she truly needed the platform to come back to national relevance after her unceremonious removal from office and this, my people is the shame of not only her brethren and her barber but also the shame.... A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, and Senator representing Kaduna Central Senatorial constituency, Shehu Sani has lambasted his party over what he referred to as a complete lack of political ideology. Sani says he wonders if the current crop of leaders in the party understand the ideologies and principles which a political party should be built upon. Sani gave this insight during an interview with Daily Trust Newspaper where he attributed his ongoing feud with the Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir el-Rufai to an obvious ideological disparity which manifested in the formation of the APC, insisting that the party was founded on individualism and a combination of different political tendencies. “I am not against the success of the governor of my state. But like I have said severally, APC is not a party that is founded on ideology. “It is a party that is founded by people from different political tendencies, beliefs and pedigrees. And I discovered that I and governor of Kaduna state come from different political tendencies. He is from the right hand of the political divide- they are the Republicans and the conservatives. “I belong to the left hand side of the political divide, where you have the progressives and the socialists.” “He (el-Rufai) is a technocrat, an accidental civil servant and now a State Governor. I came from the background of being an activist, revolutionary and now a Senator. So, we differ, and if you look at people in the right, they believe in privatization or the auctioning of public property and in the removal of subsidy.” According to Sani, unless leaders of the APC maintain a strong political ideology, the problems which reached boiling point during the National Assembly leadership crisis would occur again. He added the APC was successful in winning the battle against the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, but its most dangerous enemy could be found within. “In fact, how crisis emanates in APC shows you that our common enemy is gone, now we are facing each other. It is like courtship, everything was smooth, fine and rosy. Now, after the marriage, you face realities of life.” See more: http://www.post-nigeria.com/apc-lacks-ideology-shehu-sani/ |
President Muhammadu Buhari has dropped former Rivers Governor, Rotimi Amaechi and his counterpart Bababtunde Fashola from running for ministerial positions as insinuations have emerged that their names are conspicuously missing from the list of nominees currently undergoing final screening by the Department of State Services, DSS. Punch Newspaper confirmed on Sunday 13 September that those nominees already said to have been screened include a Lagos lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN), a former Governor of Osun State, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, former Chief of Army, Lt.-Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazu (retd.), ex-chief executive of the Federal Inland Revenue, Ifueko Omoigui-Okaru . Other names in the mix include former finance commissioner in Lagos State, Wale Edun and a former National Legal Adviser to the defunct Congress for Progressive Change, Abubakar Malami (SAN). A top DSS operative, who also confided in the PUNCH, revealed the agency had conducted their verification process on the nominees, including their financial transactions and their records with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, and the police. He hinted that the final report is set to be submitted to the President this week. The two ex-governors were at the lead during Buhari’s “change campaign” that saw the APC Victorious in the March 28, 2015 presidential poll with Amaechi as a top financier working tirelessly as the Director General, DG, of Buhari’s campaign train, and had been pinned down as a suitable choice for the post of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF. These links with Ministerial slots were altered at the dying minutes over growing fears from the Presidency that Amaechi would constitute a stumbling block to Buhari’s anti-corruption campaign and exhibit disloyalty to the APC leadership, prompting the appointment of Babachir David Lawal as the SGF. http://www.post-nigeria.com/ministerial-list-amaechi-fashola-missing/ |
President Buhari has decided to look into the Halliburton scandal and hopefully recoup the stolen funds and prosecute those found guilty. With the pressure from Western powers, especially the United States of America, his reputation as a genuine anti-corruption crusader has been pegged on how far he can go with bringing closure to the case. This was revealed by his spokesperson, Garba Shehu who hinted that the French President, Francois Hollande had told his Nigerian counterpart, to bring along his wish list, particularly in the area of his anti-corruption fight, adding that his meeting with Hollande would also involve strengthening cooperation in other areas such as the fight against terrorism, job creation, cultural integration and investment cooperation. “We need them to assist us in recovering stolen funds. France is a key player in Europe, their support in these areas are vital” “Hollande was the first foreign President to invite Buhari for a state visit shortly after he won the presidential election last march”. Expressing satisfaction with the relationship already established in the area of security, Shehu added that part of Buhari’s itinerary would also include smoothing out security relationships with French speaking countries along the Lake Chad Basin. “There are challenges with security in Nigeria and the Lake Chad region. Most of the countries surrounding us are French speaking and are also affected by the crisis. This is why we are seeking the assistance of France. We are seeking their support in the war against terrorism in the N/East. The 1994 Haliburton bribery scandal had indicted top Military brass including former Heads of State, and a former Vice-President of Nigeria. It was reported that they collected billions of US dollars as bribes for the award of the Bonny Natural Gas Project in 1994. The former US Vice President Dick Cheney who used his company, Haliburton for the illegal deal was indicted by Nigeria in 2010. Reports indicated that up to 15 top Nigeria officials have been implicated in the scandal, and only Dan Etete has been convicted in France for money laundering, an indication of France’s determination to convict those implicated in the scandal. The Halliburton scandal did not only damage the corporate image of Nigeria as an entity, it deflated the pride of ordinary, honest, hardworking Nigerians across the world. The former chairman House Committee on Power between 2007 to 2010, Ndudi Elumelu has raised doubts over the ongoing senate probe of money spent within the last 16 years in the sector, hinting that similar efforts were made under Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, but stifled by cabals in his regime who were bent on rubbishing any indicting report. Elumelu, disclosed this during an interview with ChannelsTv, where he stated that desperate contractors who had benefited from Obasanjo’s efforts at privatizing the power sector with the sale of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria, PHCN, were determined to use the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, to doctor the report to their favor. “Out of desperation they had to allege that I stole N5.3bn. I think the probe panel sort to achieve a lot, when most contractors heard about how we were going about the probe, they approached us to bribe us” “Yes we were approached and no doubt about that, and they also ganged up in order to rubbish us and paint us as corrupt. In my report I made a recommendation on rural electrification, and I know what I said in the REA, first of all I said they were duplicating projects, secondly I said officers there should be removed or redeployed. “I found out that they were contractors, and just because they wanted to kill the report, first, they said I stole and EFCC called me and said I stepped on toes, I then called the EFCC chairman (Farida Waziri) where after about 2-3 days they took me to court claiming I stole N5.3bn” “Suddenly somebody comes out and said that I awarded contract in REA with the officers of REA, I know somebody who offered me something, I refused, and he said I would be on the other side and I would be pleading. They attacked my family house and I had to take my family abroad” The Senate ad hoc committee on power initiated a probe to investigate all monies spent from 1999 till date in the power sector, announcing that the power sector had already gulped N2.7trn in the period under review. The probe panel headed by senator Abubakar Kyari had invited the permanent secretary ministry of power, Ambassador Godknows Igali who insisted that from 1999, the ministry only got a total of N1.103 trn, while the managing director of the Niger Delta Power Holding Company, James Olotu on his part, said the 10 independent power plants in the county got N8.2trn in the period under review. Against growing doubt, the committee demanded for a full audit report from the ministry of power and all agencies under it, in order to address grey areas noticed in their presentations. Obasanjo stormed the Presidential Villa in an unannounced visit to President Muhammadu Buhari, Tuesday, and though he refused to comment on the issues discussed, it is believed that the probe of the power sector was high on his agenda during the visit, prompting political observers to conclude that the ex-president is on a mission to seek amnesty from the outcome of the probe. The Director General of the National Orientation Agency, NOA, Mr. Mike Omeri, has distanced himself from tagging the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan as corrupt. During an interview on Channels TV, Thursday, the NOA DG, affirmed that he cannot say Jonathan’s government was corrupt despite claims by the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration and the All Progressives Congress, APC. Asked if the past administration was actually corrupt, he stated that “I will not categorically say it was corrupt or not, until the outcome of the investigation proves they are corrupt. If they are not, we cannot say so. “And at the end of it, we will be able to ascertain the level, or whether corruption actually existed, who is involved and the extent to which it was carried out” he said Commenting on the intention to probe the past administration, Omeri noted that Buhari could not have refused the chance to, stressing that the probe should not be seen as a witch-hunt. “Mr. President is not doing this to witch hunt. He is doing this because he wants to check”, he added that “Nigerians want to see things done right and that is why they voted for this leadership”. The NOA boss observed that the role of the agency in the peace accord signed during the last general election was to ensure peaceful co-existence, refuting claims that it was meant to stop Buhari from probing the last administration. His words “The peace accord was to ensure that the country is at peace and it was signed for the period of the election, when the tension was high. It should be part of our culture to seek peace, build it and keep it”. See more: http://www.post-nigeria.com/i-cannot-categorically-say-jonathans-govt-was-corrupt-omeri/

European countries have been inundated with the challenge of confronting the reality of the growing number of refugees seeking asylum and resettlement away from their war torn countries, hoping to find safety and new opportunities. There seems to be no disparity on who is a refugee or an asylum seeker, as the United Nations, UN, says a refugee is someone fleeing armed conflict or persecution while an asylum seeker is someone applying for a refugee status and waiting to hear the result of their claim. The critical question is why do the different European countries treat refugees differently? Slovakia would only accept Christians, saying Muslims would not fit in as there are no mosques, the United Kingdom has refused to even participate in the EU’s resettlement scheme, Sweden is taking the most asylum seekers per capita while Germany is quadrupling the number of refugees it would accept. The Netherlands wants to cut off food and shelter for migrants who fail to qualify as refugees. However Angela Markel has called for a common EU refugee policy in order for them to share the burden, a task which would definitely be difficult to achieve. The refugee crisis is mainly attributed to the war ravaging Syria which has cost loss of lives for the past five years. The unbearable conditions and terror of armed conflicts and persecution have forced innocent civilians to flee from their land. Some other refugees from Africa are also motivated to take the deadly trip across the Mediterranean in search of new opportunities and greener pastures. Human rights groups estimate more than 12,000 children have died in the Syrian civil war and millions have been displaced. The EU has been criticized for their lopsided reactions towards tackling the growing refugee crisis. Sigmar Gabriel, German Vice Chancellor, described EU’s actions as embarrassing and super awkward.
