Financial markets are increasingly getting complex and volatile; so, choosing the right types of investments is important for long-term financial security, ADEMOLA ALAWIYE writes When you are investing in the stock market or other financial ventures, there is always the risk that you will lose money. Sometimes this is because a stock or an investment fails to live up to its potential. At other times, this is because you may simply have chosen to invest in the wrong thing at the wrong time. It is possible to avoid investment mistakes, but it is also important to learn from them. When it comes to making investment decisions, not many people are capable of calling the shots. Yet, many people do this, ignoring professional advice and studies that caution against this. The consequence can be severe – in some cases, leading to the loss of investment. In essence, the investor becomes his or her own enemy. As an investor, rather than pointing to the economic situation in the country, studies have shown and experts say that you will be better off by avoiding as many mistakes as possible. Some of them are highlighted below. Being in a hurry to make returns Many investors expect quick returns on their investments, regardless of the nature of the investment. Such people often get tempted to react when another investor informs them of how great a return they made on their investment. But not all investments can make quick returns. According to experts, it is safer for investors to take a long- term view rather than a short-term view, which many prefer. “Many Nigerians will insist that they want a stock in which they can get up to 100 per cent returns in one month,” the Chief Executive Officer, Caract Investment Company, Mr. Dayo Awe, says. According to him, when a broker tells them it is not possible, they will say the broker is not good and go to some high-risk companies where they will lose everything. Trying to time the market According to experts, timing the market is something that most investors have difficulty in doing on a regular basis. To them, it is therefore very risk for investors to try to do it on their own. Failing to boost your portfolio Financial analysts have continuously advised investors to diversify their investment portfolio. This, according to them, will help to minimise their risks, and ensure depth in investments. Yet, studies show that many investors don’t bother to do this. They would rather put their money on what they consider a sure bet. One big hit and they are okay. But things don’t always pan out that way, actually it rarely does. Getting on the bandwagon For many investors, it is okay to invest only when everybody else is doing so. They believe that to be a sign that they are doing the right thing. But Sommer, in his article entitled, ‘Joining the Bandwagon? Don’t Lose Your Balance,’ warned that this could be a huge mistake. For those who are easily moved to get on the bandwagon, he advised, “I’d say, if you can reliably predict where the market is going, then jump in feet first – just buy, buy, buy. But if you don’t know what the future will be, caution is the wiser course.” Sticking with ‘a good investment’ Another common mistake investors make is that when they make an investment that turns out great, they hold on to it. To them, it is tested and trusted; a sure bet. They no longer heed warning signs and are likely to be caught napping when the investment goes bad. The fact is that what is a good investment today is not guaranteed to remain that way tomorrow. Ignoring professionals This, according to Awe, is the biggest mistake shareholders and investors make. He explains, “Nigerians don’t like to pay for services; they like to pay for physical goods that they can see. So, when you say ‘go to your professional adviser for help as a shareholder,’ they say, ‘Oh, these people are just trying to make money for themselves; by the way, I know what they are talking about.’” Bear in mind that as an investor, you need the advice of brokers, lawyers, accountants, etc. If you are into the real estate, you need experts in that sector. Depending on your own analysis, which may be limited, is risky. Failing to admit mistakes Your broker gives you a piece of advice, you reject it. However, when you make a loss, you blame it on him or her. Even if you are reminded of the fact that you were advised appropriately, you say things like, “You are my adviser you should have insisted that I listen to you.” By doing that, you are unlikely to learn from your mistakes. According to experts, many people fail to accept blame for their mistakes with some of them even insisting that they are right. Such people, who do not like to admit that they made a wrong decision, are likely to stick to a bad investment instead of mitigating further loss. They believe things will work out eventually, even when the indicators show they would not. Making investments you don’t understand Investing in something you do not understand is like starting a business you have no knowledge about. And just as you are likely to fail in the business, so also it is with the investment. Experts say investors must do some research and ensure that their investment decision is the right one before forging ahead. Neglecting their investments Many investors do not track their investments; they have no clue what is happening to them. And they seem not to care. When financial statements and other information from the company in which they have invested in gets to them, they only go through if they are certain that it contains information about profit that they have made. Many shareholders are guilty of this, according to Awe. He says, “In my view, shareholders in that category need to be more involved in the affairs of a company; there is no need waiting for a mistake to be done before you exercise your right. You need to monitor what the management of the company is doing, especially if you are really depending on your investment.” http://www.punchng.com/business/am-business/mistakes-investors-should-avoid/ source: |
naijacutee: This is nothing to write home about. There are no trained lifeguards on the beach responding to the fact that alcohol is sold on the beach, and there is a high incidence of drowning - especially at peak seasons. I was traumatised a couple of years ago when I witnessed a young girl (pushed playfully by her friends into the water) drowning. Some kind young men jumped in, got her out, but there was not a single trained lifeguard on the beach to help her! I happened to be the only person there who know CPR, and I started trying to resuscitate the girl, while bystanders just watched. It was a terrible helpless moment, because no one seemed to know what to do. I had to start asking people to use Google to find the nearest hospital or taxi, and call them to get this girl to hospital. I think she died in the end. The beach had nothing in place to save her, and the helpfulness of those around wasn't enough.what a pity. ur narration is synonymous to the culture of our Government |
The woman will also pay N110,000 for the phone. An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State on Friday sentenced a businesswoman, Philomina Eregbulem, 28, to two months imprisonment with hard labour for damaging a house caretaker’s cell phone. Delivering judgment, the Magistrate, Abimbola Oshodi-Makanju, said: “you are hereby sentenced to two months imprisonment with hard labour for maliciously damaging a cell phone. The magistrate said the convict should also to restitute N110,000, which is the value of the phone she damaged. “From the facts before the court, prosecutor has proved beyond reasonable doubt that you committed the offence that you are charged with. This court hereby finds you guilty of the charge of malicious damage and sentences you to two months imprisonment. “This will serve as deterrent to others,” the magistrate said. Ms. Eregbulem was arraigned on November 8, 2012, on one-count charge of malicious damage. She pleaded not guilty to the charge and was granted bail for N100,000 with two sureties in like sum. The prosecutor, Samson Ekikere, had told the court that the convict committed the offence on November 5, 2012 at No. 6, Ikosi Road, Oregun, Ikeja. Mr. Ekikere said that Ms. Eregbulem willfully and maliciously damaged a Samsung Galaxy cell phone valued N110,000, property of Abdulazeez Huseni. He said, “Eregbulem, who is a tenant in the house that Huseni oversees, was served with a quit notice due to her unwillingness to pay the increased house rent. “She refused to collect the quit notice. Subsequently, Huseni was instructed to paste the notice on her door, take the picture as evidence of proof of service. “In the process of taking the picture, Eregbulem collected Huseni’s phone, flung it on the floor, claiming that he took her pictures and invading her privacy.’’ The prosecutor said the offence contravened Section 348 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011. http://premiumtimesng.com/news/153087-woman-jailed-two-months-damaging-cell-phone.html |
Games were postponed in 2013 due to ASUU strike The 24th Nigeria University Games Association, NUGA, earlier scheduled to hold in 2013 will now hold from February 12 to 22 at the Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU, Ile-Ife, Osun. A NUGA council member, Cecilia Arinye, disclosed this on Friday via telephone. Ms. Arinye said that the Games, earlier scheduled for October 12 to 22, 2013, were postponed indefinitely due to the six-month strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU. She said that the new date was to give hope to the student athletes and to reawaken the Games. “It is good news that the impasse has ended. The athletes who had undergone preliminaries since June and July, will now be able to exhibit their skills at the competition. Some of them hope to use the event as a launching pad to the forthcoming Commonwealth Games, so, staging the event in February before the Commonwealth Games will be an advantage,” she said. She noted that, in the past, many student athletes had used the competition to get to the bigger stage in various sports, and that chances were still available for the upcoming ones. Ms. Arinye, who is also the NUGA Zone F Co- ordinator, comprising the universities in Lagos, Ogun and Oyo States, said that necessary logistics had been put in place to welcome contingents to the Games. According to her, the host university was ready for the Games, having put in place structures and sporting facilities for the event. She called on athletes to be law abiding and to make the best of the opportunities provided by the platform to launch themselves into world reckoning. The last edition of the competition was held at the University of Benin in 2010. source: http://premiumtimesng.com/sports/153102-university-games-hold-oau-february.html

Fun seekers are taxed N200 off season and N500 on public holidays The Facility Manager, Suntan Beach, Badagry, Francis Sewonu, said on Friday that the beach generated N11 million as revenue in 2013. Mr. Sewonu said in Lagos that the N11 million generated in 2013 was an improvement on the N8 million generated in 2012. He said that despite the N200 gate fee collected from visitors, the beach still enjoyed good patronage. “Though the fee is not permanent, we do charge N500 during public holidays and festive periods because of increase in patronage during these periods,” Mr. Sewonu said. According to him, over 100 fun seekers patronised the beach daily from Monday to Friday, while about 200 picnickers visited during weekends and other festive periods. “This record shows that Nigerians enjoy fun and they know the importance of relaxing their nerves after much stress. The management will continue to upgrade and maintain standards at the beach, to make it more befitting for relaxation and enjoyment,” Mr. Sewonu said. He said that part of the money generated from the beach was usually remitted to the Lagos State government and the remaining would be used to maintain the beach. Mr. Sewonu was optimistic that the money realised would boost the state government’s internally generated revenue. He said that to comply with government’s requirements, security of beach users had been given priority through the use of lifeguards and the Police around the environment. Mr. Sewonu said that the surroundings were usually kept clean by cleaners, while more mobile toilets had been provided in strategic places at the beach. “The environment is always kept clean; this is to comply with government regulations and to ensure that our customers receive good services, while relaxing at the beach,” he said. Mr. Sewonu said that the idea was to boost the tourism image of the state and to make it a preferred tourism destination in the country. the funny thing about my life is that all my relationship is usually with older ladies. perhaps in the future I might get married to such |
Tyche: Next best thing since slice bread.is this parable, idiom or proverb? |
oselenkejoor: Mine was 3 years older. She never knew sha. The relationship went on fine but later hit an iceberg few months later due to my own urges.what kind of urges were u referring to? also is it appropriate to tell lie about ones actual age to his/her partner? |
dumebirose: I am a DE aspirant in FUNAAB, I wanna know if another list will be out because am tired of being expectant.there are indication to that effect. |
Ola def2: Hmmm guys gone wild, comment reserved!I disagree |
Buddah Monk: Mine was 6years gap...she wasnt rich but she was not asking me for thousands and millions just recharge card money...she even helped me complete my house rent in 2009 during my IT.U were the Attention she seek when her man was Far that was ur advantage! |
Buddah Monk: Mine was 6years gap...she wasnt rich but she was not asking me for thousands and millions just recharge card money...she even helped me complete my house rent in 2009 during my IT.U were the Attention she seek when her man wasnt around. that was ur advantage! |
if u are a lady who has being in that kind of relationship whereby u r much older than ur guy, kindly share ur experience, probably the advantages and disadvantages of such relationship when compared to a "Regular relationship". Also, does a person's age synonymous to being responsible in a relationship? |
bknight: Its an experience I'd like to havewhy would u wish for that? although the chemistry of love is no respecter of person and Age,it just happen! |
sakaguchi: Mine is a year difference and I've never had issues with it. She sometimes reminds me of it (though jocularly)bro,I am referring to a relationship where the female is Older than the Male at least 4years. mine was 8 yrs. |
Vessi: I felt just the same way I would feel if I was dating my age mate.often there are times when ur partner occasionally reminds u of the age difference & coping with ur friends view & critics ain't easy. have u ever being in DAT shoe b4? |
mine was like that of Peter of p-square,age difference is as wide as the pitch.nevertheless, it was a factor but due to less competiveness,I was an overcomer. I don't know there are the like of me out there who were successful in that kind of relationship but it was challenging because it was obvious to the public anytime we do outing. if u had wore the same shoe with me,how was ur experience like? |
solbash11: I guess dat must be Ecobank, dat yeye bank eh...nope but it is GTB Master card |
Tonjeola1: How do we know the ATM Machine you referred to?It is not the bank who issues the card to me but some banks faulty automated teller machine,if my guess is right, then I am suspecting diamond ATM machine. |
In the same year,I had applied for ATM card twice and am about applying for the third this new year. My card isn't lost but not "Smart" hence not useful even when I complained to my bank's(name withheld) customers service unit telling me to use cotton wool and spirit to sharpen the card's silver panel. Repeatedly I wonder why an ATM card will be useless barely 3months of collection. Although, I admit using my Card in several ATM points(both new & old machine). each time I applied, a whopping sum of #1,050 is deducted from my a/c. Seriously, I hope the Central Bank can do something to curtail ATM Card destroying Machines. Most of this machines are outdated, mutilates the card's silver panel easily, yet the banks still uses such Automated Teller machines. I really hope this information is helpful to people out there because is not every Nigerians that could afford the luxury of applying for ATM Cards repeatedly in the same year. |
brainiacjp: Lolz...@salvation mopol...yabatech na ma sku nah...I meant Hnd |

I'm working towards it. my prayer is that we shall all meet a helper or middleman who will be a Tool to perfect God's will of Admission in our lives. don't expect God to descend himself... its well. weeks ago in a subconscious state(dream) I saw my funaab admission status, hence it must surely come to pass. Dreams are Carriers of God's will for our lives, some na devil but differentiating one from another isn't hard because God's will is always Good & add no sorrows. ..Stay Tune. |
