HealthRe: Furore Over Doctor Of Pharmacy Degree In Nigerian Universities. by Samgreguc(m): 11:24am On Jun 29, 2014
the general84: A clinical residency programme (as is to be found in the last year of Pharm D programme) usually involves a close contact with patients with a sense of responsibility. IMO that cannot be found in a student. Will students take night calls to care for the patients? Would students be available for patient care 24hrs a day (even in shifts)? I think not.
sane point here bt,
I will like to remind you that the last year is the 6th year(not the 5th year as in B. Pharm) and in that regard there will be time no much acada works again.
.
.
Pls, hw can I get hold of this curriculum?
Even medical students can't have adequate contact with patients during their training because they have lectures, studying/ reading to attend to. That is why the residency programme of medical Doctors is a postgraduate programme involving working (both supervised and unsupervised) and training/ learning before a medical Doctor can call himself/herself a specialist/consultant. I would like to ask the Pharmacists and even the general public what their reaction would be if medical Doctors decided to increase Medicine and Surgery undergraduate programme from 6yrs to 9/10yrs claiming that the additional 3 or 4yrs is clinical residency after which the fresh graduate would be regarded as a specialist/consultant? Won't there be indignation and fear at being treated by such "specialists"?
to be able to practice in d US, u must b like a consultant of Nigeria.
The Pharm D programme should be a postgraduate clinical residency done in hospitals under the College of Pharmacy certification. There, the Pharmacist is in close working relationship with patients alongside learning.
nt bad though, bt dat means we wil be subjected to post-graduate training if we choose to spend some years in the US bt, with which money?
HealthRe: Furore Over Doctor Of Pharmacy Degree In Nigerian Universities. by Samgreguc(m): 11:14am On Jun 29, 2014
Pharm. D? B. Pharm?
Pharm. D encompases wider curriculum than B. Pharm so, a graduate of Pharm. D can do what a grad. Of B. Pharm will do. The additions starts from 400level.
.
.
Will it be of help? YES of cos.
HOW? ,
the pharmacist is
physically present and professionally active to
contribute to the positive outcomes of drug
therapy. In addition, he is able to save drug costs
and to avoid unnecessary wastages because of his
intervention at the right time before drug
administration.
“After drug administration, he also monitors the
action of the drug and the response of the patient
as well as making necessary interventions to
minimize drug-related problems.
I hope the quoted tells you something.
.
.
.
.
What is it about that title Dr?
It wunt be fair if you possess a Doctor of Pharmacy degree and wunt bear Dr.
Bt, the fact that u bear Dr doesnt change the fact that you are a Pharmacist.
. . . . . Most of those studying Medicine dont really knw that their real name is Physician and dat the DOCTOR title in full is MEDICAL DOCTOR so also the pharm. D owner is PHARMACEUTICAL DOCTOR(DOCTOR of PHARMACY).
.
.
.
.
.
.
As for the person asking if we study Pathology as a pharm. Student. In my UNIPORT FACULTY OF PHARMACY curricullum(which is alike everywhere) Pathology is done in 300level. Common sense will even tell u that u must knw of a disease to bring a drug for it.

Samgreguc: Acting Deputy Surgeon General
U.S. Public Health Service
Rear Admiral (RADM) Scott F. Giberson is the Acting United States Deputy Surgeon General. He supports Acting Surgeon General RADM Boris Lushniak in communicating the best available scientific information to the public regarding ways to improve personal health and the health of the Nation.
RADM Scott Giberson was selected by 18thSurgeon General Regina Benjamin as the first Director, Division of Commissioned Corps Personnel and Readiness (DCCPR) in August, 2011. He had operational leadership for a new Corps infrastructure that provides the management of all personnel and readiness systems for over 6,700 Commissioned Corps officers. This included responsibility and accountability for comprehensive force management for the USPHS Commissioned Corps.

Since March 16, 2010, RADM Giberson has served as Assistant Surgeon General and Chief Professional Officer (CPO), Pharmacy, for the United States Public Health Service (USPHS). As CPO, Pharmacy, he advises the Office of the Surgeon General on career development and management of more than 1150 PHS pharmacists. In addition, he assumed the role of Deputy Surgeon General July 17, 2013.

RADM Giberson began his Corps career in 1994, and has served in roles as a Clinical Pharmacist, Chief Pharmacist, Senior Public Health Advisor, Senior Medical Program Officer, Division Director, and Principal Consultant. In 2001, RADM Giberson responded to the Anthrax attacks in New York City and was later chosen by his peers as the National Coordinator for over 40 Nurse and Pharmacist Response Teams as he worked under the newly-formed Department of Homeland Security. In 2003, RADM Giberson was then detailed to the Department of Defense (DOD) for three years. He served on many international health missions for the U.S. Pacific Command involving more than 23 countries. His bilateral work with specific countries also included Thailand, India, Vietnam, Papua New Guinea, and Australia. He traveled extensively working with foreign militaries on HIV/AIDS and other initiatives. Following his work in the Pacific, he transitioned to the Indian Health Service (IHS) as the Director of the National HIV/AIDS Program.

RADM Giberson maintains dual licensure as a pharmacist and clinician – and has worked as a member of an IHS Family Practice Medical staff for most of his career. RADM Giberson has authored nationally published articles, spoken at venues domestically and internationally, and served as adjunct faculty at multiple universities.

RADM Giberson has received numerous awards across his career including a DOD Meritorious Service Medal. He was recently selected by the American Pharmacists Association as the 2013 Distinguished Federal Pharmacist of the Year and was also a recipient of the 2013 American Society of Health System Pharmacists Award of Excellence. RADM Giberson holds a Bachelors Degree in Pharmacy from Temple University, a Masters Degree in Public Health from the University of Massachusetts, a graduate certificate in Health Emergencies in Large Populations, and received an Honorary Doctor of Science from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine for his body of work on improvement of patient and health system outcomes through inter-professional collaboration.

Outdoor activities, physical fitness and healthy eating are all key components of RADM Giberson’s daily life. Known to many officers for his early morning workouts, he also remains active through family fitness pursuits and his son’s sports teams. He has competed in a number of athletic activities and more recently, endurance races such as mud runs. He supports the National Prevention Strategyand encourages all Americans to become physically active. Both Acting Deputy Surgeon General Giberson and Acting Surgeon General Lushniak ‘walk-the-walk’ of community health, fitness and wellness.

so, isn't he a pharmacist with a Bpharm? Or is it because he has a honorary Doctor of Science?

If its because of the Doctor of Science, then what can we say about the Doctor of Pharmacist?

And don't forget its even a honarary Doctor of Science.

whats the supposed key role of the SGF as stated? To oversee the public health. Is public health for doctors alone? NO, NO and absolute NO. The US at first made it 4 physician alone and they later saw its should also be open 4 others due to d acidental demands for physiotherapy, drugs stuffs, nursing service, e.tc .

Beside, NMA always use US as a refence so, reference should also be made to them.

You can only have positions like surveyor-
general, attorney-general, comptroller-general
etc in cases where only one profession exists in
such system. We have only lawyers in the legal
profession, hence only lawyers can become an
attorney-general. We have only the surveyors
(registered land surveyors of the surveyors
council of Nigeria), hence only a surveyor can
become surveyor-general of the federation; an
engineer cannot be a surveyor-general.
Surveyor-general oversees survey practice only.
He doesn't dabble into the affairs of engineers,
architects and other non-surveyors.
In the health industry, we have more than one
profession (medicine, nursing, pharmacy,
physiotherapy, medical laboratory science and
so on).
The position of Surgeon -general (if it should
be at all) should be to regulate 'medical' (not
health) practices (amongst the doctors only).
How can the surgron-general be in charge of
public health? So as to dominate, dictate to and
control things to their own advantage?
America has such position in their army, and
not for the civilian health system, and the
position is open to doctors and non-doctors. It
is based on merit, and not that only a doctor
can be.
It's just like saying that only an army officer
can become a defence minister, CSO or chief of
defense staff of the country; that the airforce
or navy cannot.
Nigeria doctors are just arrogant, proud and
power-hungry.
Nigerians have rejected the surgron-general
position .. We don't want it....
am beginning to hate this doctors' ways. They feel they superceeds all. Av said dis b4 and I wil say it again_ Once a professional always a professional!
